Excerpt: The North Yemen Civil War was fought in North Yemen between royalists of the Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen and factions of the Yemen Arab Republic from 1962 to 1970. The war began with a coup d'etat carried out by the republican leader, Abdullah as-Sallal, which dethroned the newly crowned Imam Al-Badr and declare Yemen a republic under his presidency. The Imam escaped to the Saudi Arabian border and rallied popular support. The royalist side received support from Saudi Arabia, while the republicans were supported by Egypt and the Soviet Union. Both foreign irregular and conventional forces were involved. The Egyptian President, Gamal Abdel Nasser, supported the republicans with as many as 70,000 troops. Despite several military moves and peace conferences, the war sank into a stalemate. Egypt's commitment to the war is considered to have been detrimental to its performance in the Six-Day War of June 1967, after which Nasser found it increasingly difficult to maintain his army's involvement and began to pull his forces out of Yemen. By 1970, King Faisal of Saudi Arabia recognized the republic and a truce was signed. Egyptian military historians refer to the war in Yemen as their Vietnam, and historian(and current Israeli Ambassador to the U.S) Michael Oren wrote that Egypt's military adventure in Yemen was so disastrous that "the imminent Vietnam War could easily have been dubbed America's Yemen." Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Yemen," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Yemen in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Yemen when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Yemen, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Sinan was one of the biggest killers in whole history. In 1569, he was appointed governor of Ottoman Egypt, and was subsequently involved until 1571 in the conquest of Yemen. In 1574 he commanded the great expedition against Tunis, which, in spite of the resistance of the Spanish garrison, was added to the Ottoman Empire. In 1580, Sinan commanded the army against the Safavids in the Ottoman?Persian (1578?1590), and was appointed grand vizier by Sultan Murad III. 3-0 out of 5 stars The unknown war in the corner of the Arabian peninsula.
Mr.Schmidt sheds some light on an unknown war pitting the newly enthroned Iman al Badr against General Sallal. The Iman had the best intentions of reforming Yemeni society and even admired President Nasser of Egypt.General Sallal, the opportunist seized power with the help of massive Egyptian manpower and resources. The royalists fought back, with the help of the Saudi King. The civil war ends after this book was published, so the reader does not know the outcome of this civil war.
The book details a little known war on the Arabian peninsula.Few people have heard of this war. What is known is that Nasser waged aggressive war against a poorer nation simply to put his stooges into a position of control.Kind of makes Nasser's actions in the Suez Crisis look like the hypocrite he was.For those of you needing a dose of Arab politics, this book show the double dealing nature of the Middle East. ... Product Description
Lieutenant Colonel Harold Fenton Jacob (1866-1936) was an officer in the British Army who spent the majority of his time in service in Yemen. First published in 1915, "Perfumes of Araby" is a collection of thirteen vignettes of tribal life in the first decades of the twentieth century, or as the author himself describes them, "silhouettes...of Arab character, their life, thoughts, feelings and wayward moods". Topics covered by the author include Arab attitudes to alcohol, coffee and qat; family life including marriage and children; warfare; religion; folklore and superstitions; local politics; and attitudes towards the British. Yet no matter what the subject, throughout each account shines the author's obvious affection for the tribesmen and women with whom he lived and worked for the best part of ten years. The result makes for a fascinating insight into what was, and still remains, a little-known Arabian society. ... Read more

Product Description
The Gaysh tells the story of the emergence of an army following early attempts to protect the trade routes in and through Aden. From the first commercial treaty with the Abdali Sultan in 1802, various efforts were made to avoid looting, leading to the annexing of Aden Port by the East India Company in 1839. It was not until the Turks threatened to invade in the First World War that a regular army unit was formed. The 1st Yemen Infantry did not see action, and there was a move, on financial grounds, to disband it in 1928. Because a need remained, the decision was taken to replace its policing role by airpower, supported by a small force of levies to defend the bases, including a camel corps.

The book takes that story on, chronologically, through the Aden Protectorate Levies' growing strength and its relationship with the British Government and its policies. It includes its part in the Silver Jubilee celebration parade in 1935, pre1939 military operations, its role in WWII, its involvement in the evacuation of the Jews following the Arab/Jewish riots in Crater in 1947, and on to the creation of the Federation and the withdrawal of the British Army in 1967. ... Product Description
Until the early 1990s the southern and eastern towns of Yemen were extremely difficult to access. The result of nearly two decades of research, this is the first book to offer an in-depth investigation into the characteristic architecture of the region. The author's first hand research provides detailed insights into building techniques and methods, though still practiced, are little known outside the area.

Refreshingly, the book moves out of the more familiar major cities into the hinterlands and explores regions that could be said to be the last strongholds of traditional Arab architecture. The author was allowed to visit locations and sites that had previously been closed to architectural historians. As a result of this privileged access, the text and images combine to convey unique insights and viewpoints: those of the master builders and house owners who actually create and inhabit the buildings. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What a Book Can Be
This book, from the distinguished Laurence King publishers, is more like a magical talisman than a book. It has the power to enchant a child, and convince them that authentic fantasy worlds still exist and thrive, far more spectacular than any disneyland. It will shock an adult unfamiliar with the architectural splendors of Yemen, or excite those who already thought they knew about this far off world. A student of architecture will have a jolt when he sees what is obviously a labor of love, with detailed plans and sections of traditional, but often contemporary buildings, drawings that could only have been produced from painstaking initiative by the author. There is a striking typological similarity between these Yemeni tower houses and the medieval Scottish tower houses, and still another similarity between these contemporary wall bearing buildings and those being done by avant-garde architects in Voralburg and Zurich, like DePlaze, Sumi/Burkhalter, and Baumschlager Eberle. This book has a blithe way of demonstrating that this extraordinary building craft is an authentic living tradition, of which their people are justly proud. Most important, this book is a revelatory window thrown open into another culture, one almost entirely cut off from the West, and certainly one of the most architecturally significant. Highly Recommended. ... Read more
