Product Description
A groundbreaking book about a woman’s kidnapping by Islamic extremists in Yemen.

In Kidnapped in Yemen, Xerox executive Mary Quin details her experiences as an avid traveller and women’s rights advocate — a fulfilling life that led to a tour of Yemen, one of the most conservative Islamic countries in the world. But soon after her arrival, the exotic vacation quickly turned into a nightmare of ambush and captivity, violence and imminent death. She and 15 fellow tourists had been used as human shields in a terrifying gun battle between the Aden-Abyan Islamic Army and Yemeni troops. When the shooting stopped, four hostages and three kidnappers were dead. At the moment when Quin ripped an AK-47 from the hands of a wounded kidnapper and made her escape in the Yemeni desert, she knew her life could never be the same.

Mary found herself preoccupied with trying to understand why the kidnapping occurred. Her fascinating personal journey through murky militant Islam and clandestine terrorist groups led her back to Yemen to try to piece together the puzzle.

Kidnapped in Yemen is the unforgettable first-hand account of this remarkable woman’s unusual story of curiosity, survival and healing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Kidnapped in Yemen
The first few chapters of the book are gripping as Mary Quinn recounts the rescue attempt by the Yemen army, -- using no less artillery for a "surgical" rescue of several western tourists kidnapped by Islamic extremists. It also provides good advice as how one may survive a highly volatile kidnap incident; however the remainder of the book is of limited value as Mary Quinn recounts how the exerience changed the direction of her personal life and the prosecution of her kidnappers. ... Product Description
South Yemen has come to be seen as a potential Al-Qaeda stronghold and at the heart of a separatist movement threatening to rip apart southern Arabia. How has this country of forbidding mountains and arid deserts gone from British colony to communist state and then to 'terrorist base' in just half a century? In "Yemen Divided", author and Middle East expert Noel Brehony tells for the first time the comprehensive history of the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (PDRY). He explains the power politics that came to form a communist republic a few hundred miles from the holiest site in Islam, and the process and conflicts that led to Yemeni unification in 1990. The impact of the PDRY is still felt today as Saudi and government armed forces engage with Houthis in the North and unrest continues to simmer across the South. "Yemen Divided" is an important book for anyone wanting to understand why Yemen, sensitive neighbour of Saudi Arabia and strategically vital to Middle East security, has veered towards massive instability. ... Product Description
The ancient history of Yemen is especially important because Yemen is one of the oldest centers of civilization in the Near East. Its relatively fertile land and adequate rainfall in a moister climate helped sustain a stable population, a feature recognized by the ancient Greek geographer Ptolemy, who described Yemen as Eudaimon Arabia meaning Fortunate Arabiaor Happy Arabia . Between the 8th century BCE and the 6th century CE, it was dominated by six main states which rivaled each other, or were allied with each other and controlled the lucrative spice trade:Saba, Ma'in, Qataban, Hadhramaut, Awsan, and Himyar. Islam arrived in 630 CE, and Yemen became part of the Muslim realm. ... Read more

Product Description
Scholar, mystic and visionary, Ibn 'Alwan lived through the transition from Ayyubid to Rasulid rule in thirteenth-century Yemen. He was well known in his time for his critique of the ruling elites and their governance, and left behind a substantial body of writings on Islamic mysticism, theology, law and exegesis of the Qur'an. Here Muhammad Aziz presents a comprehensive portrait of Ibn 'Alwan, delineating the religious and political background in Yemen, the development of Sufi orders, the interplay between Sufi, Shi'i and Sunni traditions, and the impact of Ibn 'Alwan on the history of Sufism and Islam. The first study of Ibn 'Alwan in English, "Religion and Mysticism in Early Islam" is essential reading for all those interested in mysticism, early Islam, Sufism, and religion and history more generally. ...
