4-0 out of 5 stars Creative Explanation of the Yoga Sutras
A nice change from the typical commentary versions of ancient texts. How Yoga Works gives a good explanation of Patanjali's yoga sutras through the vehicle of
a cute story about a young woman and the several practitioners who become her students. At times, it seems to be a bit too much of the same thing, as the arc of the story, when looked at purely as a novel, suffers somewhat from the job it set out to do.However, overall, it is still a good read in addition to being
a useful way to get across inspiring material.

5-0 out of 5 stars not as the title reflects
From the title one may expect another "how to" book on yoga.....defining postures etc. Instead you are taken back in time to a wonderfully woven life experience. This book had me hooked by the first few pages. And while enjoying the plot, many different difficult Buddhist/Hindu concepts are explained effortlessly as integral life experiences of the characters. This is a winner!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read for yoga students
Lovely book that teaches you insights into the practice of yoga.Once you start reading, you won't want to put the book down.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read
This is a MUST READ for all who are interested in yoga as a practice and a lifestyle. It is an easy read with a very important message to all our lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should read
A friend recommended this book as "the best book he had ever read". It was definitely worth the read. Very thought provoking. Now I've just got to find a yoga class. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for yoga teachers and students
This book is the clearest explanation of arthritis I have ever read. For a yoga teacher, it offers wonderfully clear ways to adapt poses for students with physical limitations (arthritic or otherwise.)

The explanation of scoliosis was the most helpful I have read, and the 4 exercises I started doing every day have been transformative.

This book is probably most helpful to yoga teachers and experienced students - especially those who understand Anusara or Iyengar principles of alignment.

2-0 out of 5 stars STILL LOOKING FOR THE GUIDANCE
Very disappointing and uninpiring dvd with really nothing new to use and listen to. Of course, people with arthritis have to be careful, but then again yoga is subtle in its approach and thus books and DVDs for gentle yoga are perfectly suitable. I would recommend Rodney Yee's beginner yoga any day.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The" yoga book for arthritis
This is the best yoga book on arthritis and modifications in general. Well thought out and organized. It shows pictures of the poses at different stages of modifications with full explanations of purpose, alignment, and contraindications. I already gave my copy to a sister who needs relief from her pain and plan to replace it. Ellen saltonstall and Loren Fishman have the experience needed and articulate beautifully!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rocks your yoga world!! But poorly-named!!
I have bought countless "huge" yoga books that have yielded very little of those special little nuggets that rock my yoga world. This book is so full of amazing little variations on traditional poses and some new poses altogether.

Even if you/your students don't have any health issues, the poses and instructions given in this book bring new life to old, worn-out boring poses (variation breads awareness!).

Not only is this book chock full of useful instructions, health info and safety tips, but the info is presented in the most straightforward, succinct way that you don't have to weed through a whole lot of text that may or may not pertain. No space is wasted.

No, I swear I'm not related to the author! I'm just grateful for a well-thought out, succinct, and incredibly useful book for yoga therapists.

My only negative is the title... this book is so NOT just for arthritis!! It is for all different health issues,... and for no health issues.

I was disappointed that the book was more of her personal experiences with her family that were too many.

5-0 out of 5 stars Obsessed!
This book is amazing! I bought it at Barnes & Noble a couple weeks ago and I read it every day! Although this book was written a long time ago, the lessons that you learn in this book are timeless. The author does a great job of dividing up the chapters which are very easy to read. The chapters start with the "lesson" i guess you could say, then she goes into an example of how she learned that lesson in her life, which is very helpful and relatable. Then there are the practice suggestions and the mantras, which I like by! I HIGHLY recommend this book for someone who wants an easy read, something that will help you to understand more of the philosophy aspect of yoga without all the pictures!

5-0 out of 5 stars A simple and rich resource for daily practice
A subtle and powerful blend of commentary on sacred texts, anecdotal wisdom, asana instruction, self-study suggestions, and mantras for meditation.Judith Lasater provides twenty-one chapters of "Abiding Practice" guidance, just right for twenty-one days or weeks of individual or group experience. Very skillful and effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Living your yoga
Living your yoga is one of those rare books on yoga that has something relevant for everyday life on every page. Its is well written, practical, gives wonderful insights into patanjali and his sutras and more specifically how to use them in the 21st century. I am currently re reading a page a day and savouring each word. The practice suggestions and mantras for daily life are practical and achievable for busy people to use and have lead me to gain deeper insights into my yoga and life.

It will be on my list of xmas presents to give to my yoga students.

5-0 out of 5 stars thoughtful
The book is thought provoking and easy to read. I have tried reading books by other yogis, but they were hard to follow. This one is easier for me to read because it uses layman's terms.

After reading the book, not finish 100% yet. Yoya is new to me, but what written in this book makes sense to me so I decided to take a yoya/meditation class.

In reading the book and then applying the principles of yoga to my own everyday life, not only deepened my yoga practice, but actually deepened my everyday exepriences and the way I choose to be in the world. Hopefully, my students will have the same experience. Awesome book. Easy to follow asanas, pictures, and a solid foundation for not only 'newbies' but seasoned yogies as well! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect for creating a home practice
I have been practicing yoga for 10 years and have always loved ashtanga.I have been wanting to practice outside of classes and this book is perfect. Swenson explains the poses very well, and shows modifications.I love the short forms-helps me create a practice on the days that I am short of time.

This is definitely not a book for beginners. Ashtanga yoga is a very intense, athletic style of yoga that can intimidate most beginners.I also don't recommend that you learn these poses on your own.Rather, go to an ashtanga class and have an experienced instructor teach you.Use this book to complement classes.I go to yoga class 1-2 times a week, and use this manual on other days of the week to maintain my 6 day a week practice.I use the explanations as a reminder of the order and how to do the postures correctly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the Ashtanga Student
This book is an excellent companion to any Ashtanga practice.Clearly defines the poses, easy to follow and very informative.Has even helped when I attend class, when class has moved quickly I know what the pose is from recalling the descriptions and photos in the book.Love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The only yoga book you need
I have a few yoga books, but I never look at them any more since I got this one - this one is the best! This book has a little humor but has tons of great subtle clues on getting into the poses. It is very easy to use while you are doing yoga. I thought all the nearly naked man pictures would get a bit much but you get used to them and it's really just a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Ashtanga Yoga book ever
This is the book took me to the path of Ashtanga Yoga, after reading the first few chapters I ordered every DVD and Book from David S and Richard Freeman etc..and started my own home practice, if you buy only one yoga book, then please buy this one!.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yoga Beginner - Love it!
I've taken yoga off and on for years. But in the recent months I had been very focused on the practice. When my yogi decided to move away I freaked out. Then he told me to purchase this book and we spent 30+ hours going through it together. The combination of the book and personal instruction was amazing. Then I found out my yogi had studied with David for a year. The book had everything we have been working on for the past 4 months...now I am ready for "self-practice" at the primary level. When I master that, then I can move on to the second series with no problems with the help of this book. Breath follows movement was the essential element that has really transformed my practice. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars YOGI YOGA
I am still figuring out how to work this into our life. I really wish I would have started this earlier. My son is 14 months old and he is already so distracted it's hard to teach them how to focus.I love the tips on how to teach, and be patient with the process. Also she has a great way of discribing what to do and what to do when. The goodnight routine is key for us. Also the quick fixes are amazing and almost always work.

4-0 out of 5 stars not enough pictures
Although there were pictures, they were small and black & white, i would have preferred coloured photos and abit larger. The book is divided in sections, so i just skimmed to the part with "walker", i also felt that the part of the book that pertained to me was just a few pages, 3/4 of the book was mainly focused on newborn babies. The instruction on the poses are good and easy to follow, my 21month old daughter loves doing yoga with me and i am glad that i bought this book. By the way, i'm no yoga expert, but i wanted to bond with my kid and this book has lots of fun ways that one can do so.

5-0 out of 5 stars My baby and I love this book!
We have had hours of enjoyment doing the movements and sequenses. You don't have to be a yoga expert to have a wonderful time with your baby. My guy is 4 months now and we haven't experienced any difficulty with constipation or gas. He discovered his feet quite early and loves to play with them. It is a great book for anyone looking for fun and wellbeing for them and their baby!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy and fun (even if you've never done yoga)
I've borrowed seven baby yoga books from our library before finally purchasing this one. This was the only book that both my five- month old babies and I truly enjoyed.Other baby yoga books concentrated on technique, whereas this one focused mostly on bonding with your baby.I love the various routines and how it is broken out by developmental stages.Helen writes the routines so that they are easy to remember and flow from one pose into another. Yoga time quickly became an integral part of our daily routine. As far as helping our babies sleep longer, I haven't noticed any changes (it would have been a nice bonus though). If you are looking for a wonderfully easy and fun bonding experience with some yoga thrown in, this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars happy with my purchase
this book definitely helps you get an idea of what kind of exercise is suitable for newborns, and then how to progress as the baby grows. many other books will show the same exercises, but i like this one because of the arrangement by milestone (like newborn, head-holder, almost-sitter, sitter, etc.), and not by age ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is my Yoga Bible
I m so glad I found this book.I am new to Yoga and I just love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing and Comprehensive
Wow what a great book! I had already taken an introductory yoga class and, while I liked it, I didn't feel like shelling out cash again (for some reason, yoga is never cheap). This book is great if you're into yoga and have a do-it-yourself personality. It helps you build your own routine, gives you advice regarding duration and frequency of your yoga sessions, and has helpful dos and don'ts. I especially liked how it graded the poses based on difficulty and what they accomplish, not to mention how it specifies what each pose is geared towards (improve knees, digestion, circulation) and which should be avoided based on health problems (bad back, asthma...). If you're the kind of person who prefers practicing yoga in a class, then this book can give you helpful tips and insights to better your experience. If you prefer to practice solo, than this is the best investment you could hope for.
Go forth! Buy this book! Pretzel yourself up with confidence! (unless you have some kind of serious medical condition, in that case go see a doctor first)

5-0 out of 5 stars Tons of poses!
I got this hoping to create my own workout...but...I would have to keep flipping to the page to remember. Anyway that's beside the point that this book is amazing.

Yoga for Dummies proves that this 5,000-year-old Indiandiscipline can be all things to all people--the athletestriving for more-limber limbs, the stressed-out professional needingmental calm, peace, and clarity; the pregnant mom-to-be looking tokeep herself toned and her emotions balanced, the spiritual seekerwanting to access the higher planes of consciousness.

GeorgFeuerstein, Ph.D., and Larry Payne, Ph.D., are internationallyrecognized yoga experts. After explaining how to prepare your body andmind for yoga--including warnings about how to practice safely--theyjump straight into the postures (asanas), instructions forwhich make up the meat of book (relaxation, breathing, movement, sequencing, compensation, sitting). Feuerstein and Payne carefully andin great detail lead the reader through every step, although they doadvise first-timers to supplement the book with actual classes untilthey have the basics down. Throughout the book, clear explanationsaccompany black-and-white photos and drawings. (Unfortunately, following the written instructions is hard enough when your feet arein the air or your head's down by your ankles, and the book would havebeen improved if the pictures always appeared on the same page astheir instructions.)

Readers then learn about tailoring a yogaprogram to their needs; using props; practicing "Yoga Throughout theDay"; incorporating yoga into sex, meditation, menopause, andpregnancy; using yoga to treat back problems and PMS; and practicingyoga with kids. The book also covers yogic ethics, philosophy, andresources. It's not all asanas and pranas,though--Yoga for Dummies is sprinkled with the humorcharacteristic of the For Dummies series (a section explaining thatthe ego is the ultimate source of stress is titled "Wherever ego, Igo") and practical advice (the Forgiving Limbs maneuver allows you tobend your legs and arms a bit rather than try to fully extend them, sothat you can perform postures you're not yet quite limber enoughfor). This is both an excellent beginner's guide and a good referencefor more advanced yoginis who want a brush-upcourse. --Stefanie Durbin ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars for the athlete in all of us!
The Athlete's Guide to Yoga was the first book I bought for myself to help deepen my yoga practice. I constantly would hear of programs like yoga for climbers and yoga for surfers, not being either at the time I always felt a little left out. I hiked, I paddled and most of all I biked, but those sports and yoga were not known to be synonymous. This book is perfect for everyone else that don't get that set guide to complement yoga to your sport.

3-0 out of 5 stars not much of a companion DVD.
Note that the DVD that comes with it is only 15mins long and consists of a short warm up and warm down yoga regimen. I got the impression that it was a companion video that would cover the whole book. Not so!

5-0 out of 5 stars Yoga for even the Weekend Warrior
Very straight forward, simple to follow directions and clear illustrations by the athletes. I have been teaching yoga at a training facility for the past 5 years, and this book is so close to my yoga classes! I have recommended it to my college athletes who want to make sure to do yoga during their season, before and after, but aren't home to take class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely well-done yoga book geared towards athletes of all levels
As the title suggests, this book is intended to teach athletes how to enhance their performance with yoga.Author Sage Roundtree, a distance competitor herself as well as a registered yoga teacher, makes the point that yoga can help to make good athletes even better by encouraging flexibility, fostering strength, increasing balance, preventing injuries, and improving mental training. In Part 1, Roundtree offers a general overview appropriate for those new to yoga.In Part II of the book, Roundtree presents the postures, or asanas. This section features wonderful, full-color illustrations of Roundtree herself as well as models Michael and Amanda Lovato, husband-and-wife professional triathletes.Roundtree does an excellent job of breaking down each pose in detail, using plain, down-to-earth language. She also provides visualizations on the wrong way to perform the postures, which can be extremely helpful.Roundtree organizes the book by introducing the postures in the same order that they would be presented in a practice session.

In Part III, Roundtree provides a very nice introduction to breathwork (pranayama) and meditation. The final part of the book provides athletes with specific information on how to incorporate yoga into their training plans.Using runners and triathletes as examples, Roundtree talks about how yoga might be incorporated throughout the series of training mesocycles. Finally, she offers various routines which can be used for home practice. Each routine has a specific focus--for example, warm-up, core strength, strength-building, or emphasis on problem areas such as shoulders, chest, hips, and hamstrings. Each sequence also features names and thumbnail illustrations of all the poses included (page numbers are given as well so that readers can refer back to the full descriptions of the postures if necessary).Tucked into the back flap of this book is a "Sampler DVD," a DVD offering two yoga practices intended as warm-up and cool-down routines. This DVD is meant to be a "sneak peak" into Roundtree's companion DVD of the same name, The Athlete's Guide to Yoga, but it should be noted that the footage on the Sampler DVD is different from the footage on the actual DVD release. However, the Sampler still provides a good taste of Roundtree's live instruction.

This book is certainly likely to appeal to its intended audience of athletes, from hard-core performers to more casual sports participants.Roundtree effectively makes the case that yoga can enhance any training program, and she makes the practice of yoga accessible for virtually anyone.Because this book is so specific to athletes, it may be less suited to a general population. However, I would not hesitate to recommend The Athlete's Guide to Yoga for use as designed.

5-0 out of 5 stars yogalicious!

Hatha Yoga Pradipika (Light on Hatha Yoga) includes the original Sanskrit text compiled by Maharshi Swatmarama with a translation and thorough commentary in english by Swami Satyananda and Swami Muktibodhananda. This text elucidates the entire science of hatha yoga(asana, pranayama, shatkarma, mudra and bandha) as it was conceived and practised not only for healthand fitness but for awakening the vital energies:pranas, chakras and kundalini shakti. It points out that hatha yoga is not just a physical practice but a process of cellular transmutation from gross to subtle to divine. Thus hatha yoga was considered to be the foundation of all higher yogas.Line drawings and diagrams illustrate the text. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a clear and concise translation
Of all of the original yoga texts, this one hones closest to teh original intent in terms of language and structure. Swami Muktibodhananda does not inject any of the usual touchy-feely new-age-y nonsense that usually accompanies these works; it's a frank and honest work of enormous benefit to understanding the context and lifestyle of authentic yoga.

5-0 out of 5 stars wow
This is one of the biggest books I have ever read. If you are looking to learn TRUE and AUTHENTIC hatha yoga then GET THIS BOOK! You will NOT be dissapointed. It's big its thick it has everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Pradaipika
Amazing compendium of old and new wisdom brought forward with clarity and sympathy by Swami Muktabodhananda. Recommended for all students of Hatha, Raja, Rajadiraja yoga. Traces the history and the cultural/spiritual context in easy-to-understand language mixed with Sanskrit spice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another GREAT text
If you are familiar withthe Bihar School of Yoga text, you will know how wonderful their books and insights are. Their research stems not only from a spiritual point of view but from a scientific and medical one.

I had only the mildest of thought of what I might find in this text as I was purchasing it. I figured it would be an indepth book on the religious aspects of the system we know as Yoga. Was I mistaken... Here I found a work so compelling and utterly educating. I can not understand why I hadn't purchased this book earlier. On my quest to understand Yoga and why I do the asana's, pranayama's, mudra's and meditation, I came into contact with the Bihar School of Yoga's great work Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha/2008 Fourth Revised Edition and was blown away. Then came several more books from this school. Every one of these books have taught me something more than what I could ever hope to find on the internet. I delved further into learning true Yoga. This book is no different.

Each text in here begins with the original sanskrit writing. Then follows the engish translation of the sanskrit. Lastly, but in no way less important, follows the translation and expansion of these great writings by Swami Satyananda and Swami Muktibodhananda, giving insight on how things can be done in todays world owing to dramatic change of living and the spreading of these teaching all over the world, adapting it to everyones personal situation. Throughout they suggest that a guru is obtained to walk you through the changes and insights you will likely experience while practicing. I agree with this, but I feel they do such a great job on coaching throughout the book that you can get pretty far without one. I guess that is why these books are used in their Masters and Doctorate Yoga program in Bihar, India. Also, when read carefully, you will notice that they also mention that no matter what your spiritual/religious beliefs this book can still be used to bring you closer to it, to feel it and also to bring you closer to yourself and humanity. This book is for everyone.

Reading this book alone is a journey in of itself. Another great from the Bihar School of Yoga. To go anymore indepth than I already have would take alot more space. I highly recommend this book to any and all who are looking for a guide for a safe practice toward True Yoga (connection with the supreme). Enjoy.

Other books of theirs to consider (they have helped me understand how life and our bodies really work - inside and out, how disease manifests and how to heal) something I have yet to find in via my doctors ...

    Dynamics Of Yoga
Yogic Management of Asthma and Diabetes
The Practice of Yoga for the Digestive System

5-0 out of 5 stars into the depths of Hatha Yoga
Wow, I had no idea the depths of Hatha Yoga until I picked up this book. I think here in the West we have mostly come to know of yoga - even hatha yoga - as the yoga postures and some breathing exercises. The Pradipika really brings the Hatha yoga experience to a whole new level, one that I think many people here are not ready for! A must read for any yoga teacher. ... Read more

    Product Description
A comprehensive, user-friendly medical yoga program designed for the management and prevention of osteoporosis, with more than four hundred illustrations.Osteoporosis leads to painful fractures due to loss of bone mass; yoga strengthens bones without endangering joints: it stands to reason that yoga is the perfect therapy for osteoporosis. Forty-four million Americans suffer from low bone mass, and osteoporosis is responsible for more than 1.5 million fractures annually. Drugs and surgeries can alleviate pain, but study after study has shown that exercise is the best treatment, specifically low-impact, bone-strengthening exercises—hence, yoga.

In this comprehensive and thoroughly illustrated guide, Loren Fishman and Ellen Saltonstall, who between them have seven decades of clinical experience, help readers understand osteoporosis and give a spectrum of exercises for beginners and experts. Classical yoga poses, as well as physiologically sound adapted poses, are presented with easy-to-follow instructions and photographs. The authors welcome readers of all ages and levels of experience into the healing and strengthening practice of yoga. 321 illustrations ... Read more

Information based on studies -- some from the Mayo Clinic.
Provides yoga poses tobuild bone. Helped me develop a routine for my yoga practice that targets bone strengthening.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent information for all, not just those with osteoporosis
NOTE:I received a free review copy of this book from the web site Metapsychology Online Reviews; you can read a more detailed version of my review on that site.

Authors Loren Fishman, a doctor, and Ellen Saltonstall, an Ansura yoga instructor, certainly make a compelling case for the current crisis of osteoporosis facing Americans. They roll out statistic after statistic:55% of everyone over age 50 is known to have low bone mass; osteoporosis is responsible for more than 1.5 million hip fractures annually; women are just as likely to die after a hip fracture as they are from breast cancer; and so the list goes on.

Those of us who have reached our 30s and beyond need to be particularly concerned, as bone mass in the body reaches a natural maximum around the age of 30.After this, the rate of bone loss accelerates; although the bones can continue to be strengthened after age 40, for the most part, the rate of this deterioration can not be outpaced. But there ishope, and according to Fishman and Saltonstall, the best hope for both the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis is yoga. The authors emphasize that yoga is most effective when utilized as preventative practice, particularly when started at a young age. They state that yoga can serve to both strengthen bones and to raise peak bone mass. The authors do acknowledge that other types of exercise could serve to produce these same results. However, they distinguish yoga for several reasons, including its portability, its accessibility to all ages, its low cost (free to do in one's own home), its promotion of independence, and its timelessness.

The final four chapters of the book center around building an actual yoga practice. The first of these, "Before You Start," provides a basic overview of how the remaining chapters are organized, discusses contraindications, suggests useful props (including 3-5 blankets, 3 blocks, 2 bolsters, 2 belts, and 2 yoga mats), and reviews a few basic guidelines on form. The three chapters which follow offer postures which focus on Bone Strength, Muscle Strength, or Balance.Every single pose listed is shown at three levels:the first is the most modified Osteoporosis Variation, the second is the Osteopenia Variation, and the third is the Prevention Variation, with step-by-step numbered instructions given for each.Clear black and white photographs also accompany every pose. For those who already have prior yoga experience, this level of detail might feel somewhat cumbersome, but for those new to a yoga practice, the intelligent combination of text and illustration presented by Fishman and Saltonstall is likely to be invaluable.

I am in my early 40s, and I generally believe I am doing the "right" things to be fit and healthy:I exercise nearly every day, and I actually already practice yoga an average of about 3-4 times per week. However, my yoga sessions tend to be more on the gentle side, and after reading Fishman and Saltonstall's book, I realize that striving for greater variety in my routines might better serve me in the crucial task of osteoporosis prevention.Although I am obviously a proponent of yoga myself and wholeheartedly agree that yoga is a practice which can be of benefit to all, I also found the authors to be a bit unfair in their criticisms of some other fitness disciplines. For example, they are rather dismissive of Pilates other than to say that "many Pilates exercises are derived from yoga poses" (there is actually no evidence for this; Joseph Pilates developed his system out of his work as a gymnast).Similarly, they fail to note that weight-lifting (which they do acknowledge is effective in building bone strength), like yoga itself, can be easily modified to reduce the risk of injury.

Overall, this book is an important work.Certainly it is a must-read for anyone diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis, particularly those who are motivated to proactively treat their condition. But I would also recommend it for those who, like me, are in 30s or 40s, are active and healthy, and simply want to stay that way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific book for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis..
Have only been using this book a short time, but I am really impressed. The exercises are graded according to whether the reader has osteoporosis, osteopenia, or is aiming at prevention. So I feel safe knowing the exercises I choose are appropriate. The book also has plenty of information on how bone loss and bone gain happens, plus advice on food etc. I thoroughly recommend this book for any woman wanting to protect and improve her bones.

3-0 out of 5 stars A lot of technical talk, maybe not for the average lay person
With below average bone density, I'm searching for ways to ward off osteoporosis as I age, without taking any of the nasty side-effect inducing drugs being pushed by big pharma.I'd heard about Dr. Fishman's study and anxiously awaited the book, hoping it would offer a simple program I could follow at home.I have good reading comprehension skills, but a lot of the discussion in the first part of the book was written in a dry and technical manner and I found wading through it to be a chore. The second half of the book sets forth the recommended poses, with variations presented depending on your current bone strength and level of ability.Black and white photos accompany the pose descriptions. While I think the possibilities of yoga as a means to prevent bone loss are fascinating, I feel this book is more suited to those who have a good grasp of medical jargon and human anatomy than perhaps the average person on the street.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a thorough look at Osteopenia and Osteoporosis.Helpful for both teacher and student. The medical perspective combined with the poses offer a unique look at these issues. ... Read more

Really beautifull and peaceful book, with many illustrations and explanations. Easy to follow routines, not too complicated descriptions and I can't wait to begin. Useful also the chapter about the meditations.

I suffer from sciatica and piriformis problem. Hope it will be better every day with these exercices. The Unique thing I miss are the cautions, I don't know if all positions are suitable for serveral back problems.(especially for the herniated disc, the positions forward) Maybe you shuld hear some specialist before.

I don't have severe back pain - or even chronic back pain - but I wake up with a kink every now in then that won't go away or I sit funny at work for hours and then have a headache/neckache by the end of the day that spreads. This book has saved me a trip to the chiropractor twice.I don't use it everyday - just when I'm having achy back problems - I flip through it to find the exercises that seem to work the spots that are bothering me and I gently stretch for 15 to 20 minutes - every time I have tried this - I felt better by the next morning - if I still have some aches I work through the routine again that night - and by the second day- totally gone.

Athletes have different needs than the typical yogi. They come to the practice with more tightness from hours spent training, little time for lengthy sessions, and at the height of the season they often abandon yoga classes altogether for demanding sport-specific training. In this accessible guide, yoga teacher Sage Rountree makes it easy for athletes to reap the benefits of the practice year-round. Designed to complement a rigorous training schedule, the book includes quick, five-minute warm-ups to prepare for daily workouts; strength sessions for the off-season and base periods; flexibility sessions as training grows more demanding, including 20-minute flexibility routines to follow workouts; and focus sessions incorporating breath exercises and meditation to improve restoration and sharpen mental toughness for competition. A spiral binding makes it easy to progress through each routine, and attractive color photographs fluidly detail every pose. Tips to simplify trickier poses or vary the routine from one session to the next are included.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looks great!
I borrowed a copy from our library last night and am ordering it today. The introduction is straight forward and to the point - no preaching, just practical facts. The poses and asenas are perfect for me - I know almost every single one from beginning yoga, climbing stretch classes, belly dance conditioning, and various physical therapies. This book combines everything into a single, easy to read, well illustrated guidebook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely great!
This book is really a great addition to any yoga book shelf. Although it it does not go into as much detail on the steps of each pose as some books, if onehas a working knowledge of yoga it is excellent. Compact with heavy pages it travels well, and spiral bound it remains open to accompany one along side the workout if needed. My only true complaint is that the sanskrit term is not included on the poses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very pleasant to handle.
This book is very pleasant to handle: the pages are rigid and thick, an extension of the cover acts as a page marker, and the colors are attractive.

A landmark new translation and edition

Written almost two millennia ago, Patañjali’s work focuses on how to attain the direct experience and realization of the purusa: the innermost individual self, or soul. As the classical treatise on the Hindu understanding of mind and consciousness and on the technique of meditation, it has exerted immense influence over the religious practices of Hinduism in India and, more recently, in the West.

Edwin F. Bryant’s translation is clear, direct, and exact. Each sutra is presented as Sanskrit text, transliteration, and precise English translation, and is followed by Bryant’s authoritative commentary, which is grounded in the classical understanding of yoga and conveys the meaning and depth of the su-tras in a user-friendly manner for a Western readership without compromising scholarly rigor or traditional authenticity. In addition, Bryant presents insights drawn from the primary traditional commentaries on the sutras written over the last millennium and a half.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent interpretation of yoga sutras.
Of the four books of yoga sutras,by far this is the best. It, itself is an experience to read this well written commentary. The effort taken by this author to produce a masterpiece like this is a testimony for his understanding and dedication to the sage Patanjali and his yoga sutra. For the first time I was able to have a better understanding of the sutras.I hope I will be able to attend Prof.Edwin Bryant's workshop on yogasutras.I highly recommend this book to every yoga practioners and students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bryant's Yoga Sutras
Bryant's new translation and commentary provides the background and review of the most important classical commentaries, incl by Vyasa and Sankara. It's scholastic to be sure but so well constructed that a slow careful read yields a clear comprehension of the Sutras, as they are, beyond many modern reductionist or ideologically-directed interpretations that i've read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive, The Best; Faithful Translation
Yoga Sutras' structure and the connections between the sutras and the logic is uniquely brilliant. Yoga Sutras is meant for the enlightenment of humanity and remains vital today.

For more than a decade, I, as a seeker of truth, have been sincerely searching for an easily accessibleYoga Sutras translation which also faithfully retains the original message without any speculation/vagueness.

After extensive comparative studies of numerous translations, I found out that this book is what I had been looking for because:
    - The original spirit of Yoga Sutras is vibrant throughout as it a modern presentation of the authorized translations and commentaries of Yoga tradition.
    - The presentation is brilliant, engaging and universal in its appeal
    - This is not from an arm-chair philosopher. The author is a practitioner, which means he's put his heart and soul into this work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best edition of the Sutras in English, bar none
Edwin F. Bryant presents the sometimes enigmatic aphorisms of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras in clean, clear, sparse, perfectly comprehensible English, and provides the reader with the key thoughts of the major commentators who offer context and interpretation to this seminal Yoga text.

An important point to make is that while Bryant's impeccable scholarship satisfies the most demanding academic, these sutras, for the first time, I believe, come to life for the general reader with a sincere interest in Yoga. (The Isherwood-Prabhavananda edition, How to Know God, presents the sayings in lucid, poetic English, but there is none of the depth of commentary.) Bryant presents the individual sayings ("sutras" literally means "threads")in Sanskrit in both Devanagari script and the Latin alphabet, and translates each word precisely, then offers his own translation of the sutra in contemporary English. The individual sutras are followed by readable narratives which interpret each saying and various commentaries from ancient to modern times.

As someone who has practiced Yoga since childhood and has written a master's thesis on the sutras, I recommend this book enthusiastically. Every student and teacher of Yoga, whether as a popular fitness program or the highest pathway to enlightenment, should own this book. Furthermore, individuals with no special interest in Yoga will find that it offers an excellent complement to other philosophical and religious reading, since the Sutras' teachings mirror the pathways of many world religions. I hope it becomes available in hardback and as a Kindle book because it is a work that should become part of one's permanent library and, in fact, part of one's very life.

    Product Description

Judith Hanson Lasater has been teaching an annual yoga retreat at Feathered Pipe Ranch, in Helena, Montana, for 28 years. When she learned that one of her students was collecting Lasater’s thoughts — which she called “Judith’s aphorisms” — Lasater decided to collect them in this book. Featuring one thought for each day of the year, along with a suggested practice, these brief, powerful insights reflect the author’s knowledge of classic yoga philosophy and years of experience. Humorous, inspiring, and surprisingly down-to-earth, they guide seekers both on and off the yoga mat. These aphorisms address love, asana, fear, trust, expectations, pranayama, suffering, laughter, presence, the Yoga Sutra, and much more. They emphasize the experience of being present to one's self and to life’s ups and downs — day by day, breath by breath, moment by moment. A Year of Living Your Yoga is a gentle invitation to readers to know themselves on a deeper level.

5-0 out of 5 stars great games and variations on sun salutation
The book has great games to intertwine with the regular practice and make it more fun. When children lose interest in just the regular poses, these games can help break the regularity and also help children work together. I particularly love the sun salutation. The children love the twirling and stomping. I recommend this book to yoga teachers or mom's that have a regular practice with their children and want to break it up a little.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for educators
I'm starting my yoga for children classes and bought quite few of them.

There was good and great and so-so. And all of them contained same poses.

But for kids doing poses is not enough, they need fun and games and that's is why this book so special. It gives you all kind on games with age distinctions .

It's great book for educators and yoga teachers.

    Very recommending.

5-0 out of 5 stars YOGA GAMES FOR CHILDREN
    YOGA GAMES FOR CHILDREN

I work with children. I am a paraprofessional in a special needs school, and was very excited to read this book, to see if there might be anything I could use with our kids.
One of the things that I noticed right away is how many of the games and exercises were done in groups or pairs. This is fantastic in my opinion! It seems to me that these days kids are more isolated than in the past. I am not sure what it is, but I rarely see little girls walking and holding hands or boys roughhousing. Fighting yes, just roughhousing, no. I also have noted that most parents do not hold their children's hands any more. This is very sad in my opinion, as touch in and of its own is healing. Touch during play is a good thing!

So, I was very pleased to find that there were things that there were games where the kids held hands or leaned back against each other. I believe this helps to build co-operation and understanding.
There are also plenty of games where it is individuals alone. My favorite is Sun Salutations! It incorporates many basic yoga positions, and it will be a lot of fun for the kids. The Mountain is a close runner up. I can just see the kids enjoying those games, and having fun.
The relaxation exercises are ideal as well. Sometimes kids, as well as adults, need to just let it go and breathe. This book gives several examples of how to do this.
I will not be able to use many of these games with my special needs classroom. We have a low functioning group and the understanding is not there in some cases, and the physical abilities are not there in others. My niece is a preschool teacher in a daycare facility, as well as being Assistant Director. She is very excited about trying many of these games with her class! I had a hard time holding onto the book long enough to finish reading it before passing it on. She is thinking that if it works out she can suggest it for other sites in the corporate system she works in .

This book would also be great fun for any family with young or even not so young kids. I raised four kids of my own, and know how valuable that together time is, and there are many fun suggestions here. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has young ones in their life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for all Yoga teachers!
As a yoga teacher, this is a great book to have in your collection. The pictures are clear and the instructions are easy to follow. I find that it's very important to assist my students with hands-on adjustments and there are not many books out there that illustrate the assists the way Stephanie's book does. Of course some adjustments can be dangerous, but only if the teacher is rough and doesn't listen to the student's body. The adjustments that are given in this book are safe and effective as long as they are conducted properly. I highly reccomend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars insightful
i bought the book with the intention of taking a workshop.i have dozens of yoga books (as most teachers do) i really love this book, well written (extremely easy to understand the dynamics of the assistance in the postures) i eventually did do the workshop, and i am even more of a fan! Stephanie is so very enthusiastic about sharing her knowledge, you come away with the understanding she is extremely knowledgeable, warm, and that she wants you to be comfortable in finding ways to touch your students inadjustments that verbal ques just can't express. i feel Yoga Posture Adjustments and Assisting: An Insightful Guide for Yoga Teachers and Students, is as easy to understand as the title states.a clear no nonsense guide you will refer to often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book!
As a new Yoga teacher, I am so grateful for this book. It has helped me continue my education and deepen my understanding about adjusting and assisting students. It is full of excellent advise and alignment cuing. The photographs and descriptions make everything crystal clear. This author seems to be able to anticipate all questions and information that teachers and students alike have been wanting to ask. This book is a must have for anyone building a Yoga library. I have learned so much about adjusting and assisting from this book, more than in my teacher training.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
There are so many good books on yoga postures and alignment - but this is not one of them. The adjustments are way too dramatic and could do more harm than good.Advice for more gentle adjustments is not given nor is advice about getting into and out of the pose.Definitely not worth it!!!!!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars A dangerous book
This is not yoga and is definitely a dangerous book.Yoga is about respecting the limitations of the body and not succumbing to the egoistic concept of perfecting a pose. The difference between yoga asana and exercise is AWARENESS.This awareness is cultivated from within and not from someone pulling or pushing you into a pose.I know that many teachers are out there doing these sorts of adjustments and that students may request them, but this is not classical yoga and may account for the alarming increase in the rate of yoga practitioners being injured. ... Product Description

The seminal treatise and guide to Ashtanga yoga by the master of this increasingly popular discipline

One of the great yoga figures of our time, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois brought Ashtanga yoga to the West more than thirty years ago. Based on flowing, energetic movement coordinated with the breath, Ashtanga and the many forms of vinyasa yoga that grow directly out of it have become the most widespread and influential styles practiced today.

Yoga Mala—a “garland of yoga”—is Jois’s authoritative guide to Ashtanga. In it, he outlines the ethical principles and philosophy underlying the discipline, explains important terms and concepts, and guides the reader through Ashtanga’s Sun Salutations and the subsequent primary sequence of forty-two asanas, or poses, precisely describing how to execute each position and what benefits each provides. It is a foundational work on yoga by a true master.

To coincide with publication of Guruji: A Portrait of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois Through the Eyes of His Students by Guy Donahaye and Eddie Stern, this new edition of Yoga Mala includes a foreword by Jois’s grandson Sharath Rangaswamy, currently co-director of the famous school Jois founded in Mysore, the Ashtanga Yoga Institute.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A Must!
This is one of the books that should be read by anyone who is practicing yoga, especialy Ashtanga.
The book is written in easy-to-understand english, so it won't be a problem to read for people who are not that good in english.
It's really a must have book for every yogi and yogini.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Understading Yoga Practice and Theory
This book is really the guide for the serious yoga pratictioner! It leads you through yoga as a self-discovery. It is not filled up with all this new age fluff. The book is written from the years of experience Pattabi Jois has in Asthanga Yoga and does not scare away the novice. If you want to begin your path in the art and science of yoga buy and read and reread this book. You will then search a teacher that will complement the rich and well paced information on Asthanga Yoga and its benefits that this book contains.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful accompaniment for ashtanga yogis
I love this book! The asana descriptions are very detailed and clear and the photographs that accompany the text really help as well. The information on drishtis and bandhas is invaluable as are the notes on the benefits of the poses. I think this is a great book for someone familiar with ashtanga yoga or for anyone interested in seriously advancing their yoga practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars yoga mala
This book is a must for ashtanga practitioners, having been written by the guru of this form of yoga, Sri K Pattabhi Jois. The forward by Eddie Stern provides an interesting background of the life of Pattabhi Jois and how he came to teach western students.
The opening chapter describes what is meant by 'ashtanga' (eight limbs) of yoga, with valuable information regarding yogic philosophy, lifestyle and dietary concerns, quoting from the ancient texts.
Following is a detailed description of the vinyasa/asana practice.
Ashtanga is a challenging and methodical practice of yoga, with emphasis on correct method; from the first sun salutation to the final resting position, there is exact placement of the gaze, the timing of the breath, and sequence of movement.
Those with an interest in yoga generally, or who practicea different form, may also find this book of value, since yoga is yoga and the ultimate "goal" is the same. It is my feeling, however, that without an existing practice and enthusiasm for this method, the book may seem a little dry in the last section.

I have had a copy with me for years, it is an invaluable reference.

    Product Description
The world of yoga is astonishingly rich in its array of schools and practices. Yet, as diverse as they seem, they share a common aim: the discovery of the essence of existence that can be found at the core of our being, and the liberation that comes from that discovery. With this worthy goal in mind, Richard Freeman presents an enlightening overview of the many teachings, practices, and scriptures that serve as the basis for all the schools of yoga—hatha, bhakti, jnana, karma, tantra, and others. He shows how the myriad forms are ultimately related, and can even be perceived to make up a vast, interpenetrating matrix, symbolizing the unity, profundity, and beauty of the ancient tradition.

Richard's wide-ranging discussion includes the Upanisads and Samkhya philosophies, the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, the eight limbs of astanga yoga, the process and purpose of hatha yoga, and much more. He also explores the role of the guru, chanting, meditation, and the yogic imperative of offering service to others. All of this is applied to the actual practice, giving the reader the tools to digest and apply the wealth of information to daily life. The Mirror of Yoga will be a welcome resource to all yogis who wish to better practice the profound philosophy underlying their practice. ... Read more
