Product Description
This richly illustrated and well-researched volume chronicles the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, held in Seattle in 1909. The 3.7 million visitors to the fair during its four-month run, on what was to become the University of Washington campus, beheld a cornucopia of exhibits housed in an astonishing collection of buildings and enjoyed the carnival-like - and sometimes controversial - entertainments of the Pay Streak midway. Starting with the Klondike Gold Rush in 1897, authors Alan J. Stein and Paula Becker recount in detail the history of the fair that brought Seattle and Washington into the national spotlight.

The A-Y-P Exposition was a major community effort for a state that was only twenty years old. It was the first world's fair to make a profit, it provided a platform for advocates of woman suffrage, and it set the general plan for the University of Washington campus that endures to this day. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, Washington's First World's Fair: A Timeline History
Wonderful description with lots of pictures of the first Seattle World's Fair in 1904. The fair was constructed on the current site of the University of Washington campus, which still includes a couple of the fair buildings. The pond in "Red Square" originally was part of a cascading series of ponds with a view of Mount Rainier in the background. Very complete, well designed and recreates the experience of attending the event that put Seattle on the map.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition, Washington's First World's Fair: A Timeline History
After watching our local (Seattle) PBS's production and documentary on this topic, I ordered this book as a Christmas gift for my husband. It seems his grandfather had journeyed from New Orleans as a young man to see this Expo, and eventually married and settled down here in the Pacific Northwest. One could say that if not for this particular event, my husband wouldn't be here!We were both intrigued and pleased with the text and pictures, and it covered the subject matter perfectly. Thanks so much for having this book available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes An Excellent Gift
It is a surprise to me that there has been so little written about the
A-Y-P, at least until this book came out.The photographs are the best part, especially when they compare what is on the U of W. campus today with the exhibition buildings of 100 years ago.

I was hoping that the text would place a little more emphasis on the broader contest of the A-Y-P rather than inumerating the many "special" days honoring everyone from Japan to Pierce County. It seemed like much of the text reflected the boosterism of the local press.Oh well. . .However, if all you did was read the photo captions, this book takes you back in time and will be especially treasured by anyone who is a U of W grad or who has an interest in local history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Expo
Authors Stein and Becker and the History Link staff ([...]) spent three years in researching and writing this classic. It is the only book you need to read if you're interested in really learning about Seattle's first World Fair, the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition.Good writing, accurate information and excellent graphics make it also a very good read.A nice holiday gift idea.

I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Product Description
In the boomtowns of the Alaska-Yukon stampedes, where gold dust was common currency, the rarest commodity was an attractive woman, and her company could be costly. Author Lael Morgan takes you into the heart of the gold rush demimonde, that ""half world"" of prostitutes, dance hall girls, and entertainers who lived on the outskirts of polite society. Meet ""Dutch Kate"" Wilson, who pioneered many areas long before the ""respectable"" women who received credit for getting there first ... ruthless heartbreakers Cad Wilson and Rose Blumkin ... ""French"" Marie Larose, who auctioned herself off as a wife to the highest bidder ... Georgia Lee, who invested her earnings wisely and became one of the richest women in the North ... and Edith Neile, called ""the Oregon Mare,"" famous for both her outlandish behavior and her softhearted generosity. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good Time Girls gives a pretty good time.....
The story of the women who ventured north to Alaska during the gold rush is a great story. However this account is a bit rambling and lacks continuity from one chapter to the next. There are several misspelled words and grammatical errors (no spell check or grammar check???).Overall...a good account of the spirited 'working women' who joined the rush to the gold.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yukon is good.
If one has visited the Yukon, any part of it, you naturally become interested in some of its history. In the summer, this place is where the gods dwell, if one does not count the mosquitoes. In 1898 though, it must of been a little more difficult for those that came in seach of gold. With the modern roads and modern vehicles, it is like driving in the country, however, if one gets about a mile of the regular roads, you go back in time real fast.It must have taken real guts to go to the Yukon in 1898.And the women that did so had to be brave and tough. This book is an interesting tale of real women that were brave and tough, but they also needed to make some money and fast. Some of them made alot of money and some of them suffered greatly.Very interesting reading if one likes true history.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good Time Girls of the Alaska-Yukon Gold Rush
I did not know anyone could make sex so boring.Part of the problem lies with the lack of rich source material on the "girls".This results is one sketchy case history after another. The profiles of the men are richer and more interesting, in part because tthe men left journals and other documentaries of their lives.I had a hard time getting through it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Time Girls with hearts of Gold
I just turned the last page of this delightful book and I was sorry to see it end!I just returned from my third trip to Alaska with 4 books in my suitcase and this was one of them.I find the early Alaska pioneers such strong, interesting people. The book mentions how Alaska had a "winnowing" affect....only the strong survived and these women were tough and independent!

The research that went into this book was impressive - the most quotes I have ever seen in a book - but it lends credibility to what the author is saying about her subjects. The gold rush history is detailed as the "girls" followed the rush from town to town, so you get great historical detail on the gold rush, the towns impacted by the rush in additional to meeting the colorful ladies of the "line".

A fast paced read with wonderfully rich old black and white photos that bring it all to life....

Product Description

In this humorous and upbeat memoir, James Wickersham describes his career as a pioneer judge and later as a congressional representative assigned to a vast, snow-covered district, extending over 300,000 square miles in the undeveloped Alaska Territory.  Wickersham’s many adventures include traveling by dogsled over hundreds of miles through snow-covered mountains; serving as judge for the trials of many famous outlaws in the midst of the gold strikes; and hunting, mining, and climbing in his local Alaska wilderness. Though he was instrumental in the early history of Alaska, and his legacy is evident throughout the state—for example, he named the city of Fairbanks—this is the first and only work to focus on Wickersham’s life during this pivotal time in Alaska’s history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Review: "Old Yukon"
In this new addition of "Old Yukon", Professor Cole has again displayed both his inexhaustible knowledge of early Alaskan history and unique editing skills. The original edition is essential reading for any student of Alaskan development during the first third of the twentieth century; but it is not an enjoyable task, being a dry and biased account of most of the important event taking place during the development of the territory, along with many not so important happenings.

Professor Cole cured those problems with this edition. Inaccurate information is noted, incorrect initials and grammar have been corrected. This handy volume has also been judiciously edited and illustrative pictures and footnotes have been added where necessary. The result transforms this volume into an exciting and, at times, suspenseful rendition of the last American frontier. This edition belongs in the library of every person interested in Alaska. ... Product Description
Yukon History has its fair share of unique characters and fascinating events. Contemporary Yukoners talk about the colourful 5 percent, quirky individuals who have come to Canada's North to find or reinvent themselves. Northern literature is full of accounts of mad trappers, jilted lovers, miners driven mad by cabin fever, sub-Arctic desperados and victims of racial tensions. In reality, the passions and angers that drove people to murder in the Yukon were more basic and common than popular culture suggests. "Strange Things Done" explores the inner dynamics of Yukon society through the exploration of these extraordinary events. Klondike lore is full of accounts of the exploits of Dangerous Dan McGrew, Sergeant Preston of the Mounted, and the Mad Trapper of Rat River. The stories vary from outright fabrications to northern fantasies and, on occasion, real-Iife accounts. "Strange Things Done" investigates a series of murders in the pre-World War II Yukon, exploring the boundaries between myths and historical events. The book seeks to understand both the specific events, carefully reconstructed from court evidence and police records, and the broader social and cultural context within which these violent deaths occurred. The murder case studies provide a unique and penetrating perspective on key aspects of Yukon history, such as Native-newcomer relations, mental illness and the folklore about cabin fever, the role of immigrants in northern society, violence in the gold fields, and the role of the police and courts in regulating social behaviour. The investigation of these capital cases also illustrates the fear and paranoia which gripped the territory in the aftermath of a murder, and the society's insistence on quick and retributive justice when offenders were caught and convicted. The Yukon experienced fewer murders than popular literature would suggest, and fewer than most would expect given the region's intense and dramatic history, but those that did occur illustrate the passions, frustrations, angers and human frailties that are present in all societies. The manner in which the murders occurred and the way in which Yukoners reacted also reveals specific and important aspects of territorial society. ... Product Description
This completely revised edition of Land of the Midnight Sun, first published in 1988, is a comprehensive overview of Yukon history. This book places the Klondike Gold Rush within the broader sweep of the past, giving particular emphasis to the role of First Nations people and Aboriginal-white relations and to the lengthy struggle of Yukoners to find their place in the Canadian confederation. This broader story incorporates the mammoth dredges that scoured the Klondike creeks, the impressive silver mines in the Elsa-Keno Hill area, the sinking of the Princess Sophia, the Yukon's remarkable contributions to the war effort in World War I, and the sweeping transformations associated with the American "occupation" during World War II.

"Sudden miracles, quick turns of fortune, and deeds of endurance and courage and of mind-numbing folly have characterized most of the less-celebrated periods of the Yukon’s past. In their carefully researched and well-written Land of the Midnight Sun, Ken Coates and William Morrison have managed to salvage most of the story."--The Globe and Mail ... Read more

Product Description

This sixth volume in the Osgoode Society's distinguished series on the history of Canadian law turns to the a central theme in the history of British Columbia and the Yukon - law and order. In the early days of British sovereignty, the frenzied activity of the fur trade and the gold rush, along with clashes between settlers and Natives, made law enforcement a difficult business. Later, although law and order were more firmly established, tensions continued between the dominant populations committed to the practice and rhetoric of British justice and those groups owing allegiance to other value systems (such as Native peoples,Asian immigrants, and Doukhobors) or those resisting authority (criminals and the criminally insane). These essays look at key social, economic, and political issues of the times and show how they influenced the developing legal system.

The essays cover a wide range of topics, and explore the human as well as the legal dimensions of their subjects, relating specific cases to broader theory. They demonstrate that English law has been flexible enough to accommodate diversity and is, therefore, pragmatic. The volume also proves that there is no single Canadian legal culture: geography, demography, politics, economics, and military considerations have had an impact on the shape of our legal culture. The introduction by John McLaren and Hamar Foster pulls together the many regional themes to provide a clear overview of the legal complexities of the period. ... Read more
