Product Description
"Gold at Fortymile Creek" tells the story of the search for gold in the Yukon basin prior to the famous Klondike gold rush of 1896-8. Based on the accounts of dozens of prospectors who visited the area and searched for gold between 1873 and 1896, it chronicles the trials, heartbreaks and successes as the number of goldseekers grew and a unique community of hardy individualists set the stage for the world's most famous goldrush. With names like Swiftwater Bill, Crooked Leg Louie, Slobbery Tom and Tin Kettle George, these men lived in total isolation beyond the borders of civilization. They were eccentrics and outcasts who shaped their own rules, their own justice and their own social order. "Gold at Fortymile Creek" follows the first goldseekers from their arrival in 1873 till 1896 when George Carmack, Skookum Jim and Tagish Charlie started the Klondike Stampede.Beginning along the burs of the great Yukon River, it follows the gradual growth of the search for gold over thousands of square miles and it describes the methods of mining, the significant discoveries and the rough-and-ready settlements which grew up around each new find, including Fort Reliance, Forty Mile, Circle and Dawson City. Into this no-man's-land without boundaries came the harbingers of civilization: the surveyors and the North West Mounted Police who established law, peace and order. They were joined by traders, missionaries, gentlemen travellers, journalists, pioneer women and countless other followers of the quest for gold. "Gold at Fortymile Creek" tells about survival and hardship, life and death, good times and bad in the harshest wilderness on the continent. It is a readable and thoroughly researched account of the search for gold and the opening of one of the last frontiers. Michael Gates is Curator of Collections for Klondike National Historic Sites in Dawson City, Yukon. This book is intended for. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A great Klondike read
I've been working in the western Yukon off and on over the last several years and made a point of learning as much about the area as I can.To say the least, there have been a few books written about the history of thegold rush- just try an Amazon search!

Where Gates' book has itsstrength is that it starts before the goldrush with the early Russianexplorers, and move into the early prospectors that plied the hills of theFortymile country which were responsible for the Klondike discovery. Incontrast to many of the Klondike books, Gates' is well-researched andreferenced, and reads well. If you're looking for a starting point on thehistory of the Upper Yukon and perhaps looking for a book on the area toplan a trip, this is the one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent history book.
Michael Gates' book is an excellent history of gold exploration in the Yukon region prior to the Klondike gold rush stampede of 1897-98.Gates points out very well how important transportation and communciations wereat the time, as well as the logistical difficulties of food supplies, andthe role of poor diet to the miners' health. He also shows how little ittook to create a stampede even among experienced prospectors, thedevelopment and role of the trading companies, the code of behavior amongthe early-day prospectors, and the personalities of the miners.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Gold Rush" is excellent reading
I throughly enjoyed this book.Gates does an excellent job in going into enough detail to make the book interesting but not heavy and boring.Having been an Alaska resident for 11 years and answering people's questions about that great state I was surprised in my knowledge gap concerning the gold rush. They still mine gold in Alaska today but not like they did then.It was dangerous just to get to where the gold was not to mention getting it out of the ground and trying to survive the harsh winters. This book is an educational, informative piece of work.It covers all aspects of a miner's life and several colorful characters from the gold rush.A great, fun to read book.If Alaska and the Yukon spark you interest and daydreams, this book, both paperback and hardcover, are well worth the asking price. This book will be one of the gems of your library.J.Grimes ... This has been one of my favorite books for years. It is very thorough, yet interesting, and covers the subjects without leaning too heavily on the anthropological. It includes modern as well as pre-history, oral historyand stories, early drawings and color photographs. It is just a wonderful, respectful and human book. Product Description
This is the tale of how Canada's high northern wilderness was brought into civilization's fold through a frail network of wires laboriously strung between poles and trees for hundreds of desolate miles. The Yukon Telegraph started in 1897, when gold was discovered in the Yukon and the government needed a faster way to communicated with its remote northern territory. The isolated residents, too wanted a more reliable connection with the outside world. Bill Miller takes readers from the line's conception in 1899 to its abandonment in 1952 through to its status today and its potential for future generations, focusing on the colorful people who lived and worked in the area. His account, enhanced by extensive research and engaging storytelling , reveals a fascinating fragment of Canada's rich history. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars In Quest of Yukon River Steamboat Information
Stan Cohen's "Yukon River Steamboats" book has providedexcellent historical and visual information about the early Steamboats onthe Yukon River, and their environmental history of that time period.

TheArchival Collections of the Mercer County Historical Museum, 130 EastMarket, Box 512, Celina, OH 45822, contains two gold rush diaries and twophotograph albums, with ledgers, claims, and a packet of letters, from agroup of 15 men from Ohio, who went on the gold rush 1898-1900. TheirSteamer was theD. Armstrong, from St. Marys, Ohio. They mention nearlyone hundred different steamboats, in their diaries.

In Cohen's book, henames several of the same steamboats: St. Michael, P.B. Weare,Sybil, Yukon,Susie, Monarch, Alice,Tyrrell, Sarah, Hannah, Oil City, Leah, Louise, andJennie M. Cohen illustrated his books with excellent photographs. On page110, he gave reference to Mr. William D. McBride of Whitehorse, who in1949, compiled a list of boats for "Caribou and NOrthwest Digest"magazine.(Now, I am quest of a copy of that magazine."

This July(2000) I visited Alaska and the Yukon Territory, in quest of informationabout this 1898-1900 gold rush.People in Fairbanks,Wiseman, Anchorage andDawson gave me excellent help. This past year, many Alaskans havecorresponded with me, helping me with my research on the gold rushstory.

Now, I am preparing a manuscript from these Ohioan's gold rushdiaries. They spent the winter of 1898-1899 on the Koyukuk river and itstributaries. They spent the summer of 1899, on the Yukon, near Weare(Tanana). They spent the winter of 1899-1900 on the Chena and itstributaries. They often mention the Jennie M. and the Currier parties, intheir daily diaries. They also mention members of the Str. Argo, Str.Illinois, Str. Kyle, STr. Winthrop, Str. North Star, Str. Luella, et.al.

If anyone would be interested in corresponding with me, about thesediaries of the gold rush, and/or steamboats on the Yukon, I would be gladto hear from them.

I especially recommend Stan Cohen for providing thisbeautiful book.I also enjoy his book, "Klondike CentennialScrapbook, with Candy Waugaman's Collection."

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent pictorial book.
Fascinating pictorial book about the sternwheelers that plied the lakes and streams of the Yukon River before, during, and after the Klondike Gold Rush.

The sternwheelers played a crucial role in development of theregion and in the gold rush, especially prior to the White Pass and YukonRoute railroad, which was built in 1898-99.The WPYR provided a rail routefrom Skagway to Whitehorse eventually, but it was the connections with thesternwheelers that made the journey of hundreds of miles from Skagway toDawson City much easier.

Eventually, highways and airplanes killed offthe sternwheelers, bringing to an end this romantic era in the north.

This books lets you seem them in their glory days.

Product Description
The Yukon is famous for its Klondike gold rush, but it was the site of another major mineral discovery in 1918 that touched off its own stampede of sourdoughs and eventually produced more paydirt than the Klondike. This was the fabulously rich Keno Hill silver deposit, which made the Yukon one of the world's leading silver producers and backstopped the territorial economy for decades.

And as the Klondike strike gave rise to the boom town of Dawson, the Keno strike fostered feisty Keno City, the last of the wild west mining towns:"Down in shacks by Lightning Creek, vintners and vendors of moonshine and the sporting girls catered to the miners on weekends amid scratching gramophone melodies. At that time Keno was a really lively town of 800 men, very few women and much hard drinking. Some of the boys had an old car called the Rum Runner that took cases of booze up to the camps every evening. At first both camps had the same second Sunday off but with two crews in, there was not enough of everything desirable to go around and a running donnybrook would break out. After a few wholesale brawls, which inevitably led to more drinking and absenteeism on Mondays, the companies alternated their Sundays off." At the top of the social order was the puritanical mine boss, Livingstone Wernecke, who never stopped inveighing against vice, "but Wernecke found that he did not run Keno; it ran itself."

The story of Keno's discovery, development and decline is one of the great adventures of the north, and it is told here by one of the Yukon's legendary mining personalities, Dr. Aaro Aho. Dr. Aho's authoritative voice on mining matters is nicely offset by his taste for juicy gossip, as he fills the book with delightful portraits of such characters as Arthur Hester (aka Whiskey Jack), a dishevelled former engraver to Queen Victoria of whom the Wernecke said, "Never give Hester anything but meat or grease or he will find some way of turning it into alcohol." Hester, who could dash off a passable likeness in trade for a drink no matter how drunk, kept well oiled nonetheless. Or Nora, the tough prostitute who went about town dressed in nothing but toenail paint. When a customer once asked why her foot was covered in blood she explained she had killed a rabbit for dinner by kicking it. Or Marie, a pretty young woman who did very well as a "girl on the line" bought two houses, started a restaurant and taxi business, but lost her mind and was seen wading through deep snow placing handfuls of jewellery in people's mail boxes before disappearing into the wilderness.

Aho extends his account to cover the mining history of the entire Stewart River basin, which in addition to its wealth of silver, was a major producer of lead, zinc and gold. Hills of Silver is not just the colourful story of Keno Hill, but an important addition to the history of Canadian mining. ... Read more

THREE RIVERS: THE YUKON'S GREAT BOREAL WILDERNESS explores a region of vast wilderness previously unknown to the outside world, but is a major environmental hotspot of modern times as it represents one of the last, key pieces of the boreal region. With the Mackenzie Valley pipeline proposal looming to threaten it, the Three Rivers region is in the news and deserving of this coffee-table survey, which packs in color photos and art and writing by major authors to remind of the region's importance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accessing a great wilderness area..... GerryM
After visiting the yukon(from Australia)and travelling by road I was interested in learning about more inaccessable areas of the Yukon. The book is first and foremost a photographic journey in the great boreal wilderness area by way of the Snake, Bonnet Plume and Wind rivers. The photographs are spectacular but are accompanied by well written text and great descriptive writing by a number of different writers who made the trip. It also is informative where relevent of the history of the area and has just the right balance. The book is a focus on the need to conserve the area, and it successfully does this by "taking you there" and helping you see and feel it for yourself. It does not focus on an anti development theme as such but achieves the environmental focus in a positive and stunning manner. The book is a delight to look at and read and is well set out and captioned. The gwich'in inhabitants of the area and their lives are well integrated into the story and adds to make this a book worth having and revisiting. I can appreciate the care that went into preparing this book so that it is immediately visually stunning but then has wonderful text to read and enjoy and have some appeal to everyone.

Product Description

“Saints and sinners, whores and housewives, swindlers and laborers alike attempted a hasty adjustment to novel conditions in a land that seemed strange and forbidding,” writes William R. Hunt in his narrative history of Alaska mining. Hunt offers an exciting anecdotal account that follows hungry prospectors, canny shopkeepers, hopeful hangers-on, and crafty lawyers through the gold mining camps and temporary towns of nineteenth-century Alaska. Hunt has hiked and mined many of the same claims he writes about in the book, and North of 53 offers a rare glimpse into far-flung communities from Skagway to the Yukon to the deep interior of Alaska to the Ididarod and Nome on the Bering Sea.
