Extractions: 15. Proper storage of animal manure Present-day agriculture in Québec is characterized by livestock raising (hog, fowl, etc.) and intensive crop growing (corn, grain crops, etc.). Between 1971 and 2000, the animal density on agricultural land increased by 45%, going from 0.66 animal units per cultivated hectare to 0.96. This increase has heightened the problem of manure disposal in some regions of Québec. To minimize the problem of over-fertilization and of pollution linked to the spreading of animal manure, the Québec government has given financial support, since 1988, to projects for construction of manure storage sites. In 2000, more than 80% of animal livestock units in Québec were being managed in accordance with the standards governing manure storage. 5-year trend Evaluation 5-year trend Evaluation 16. Extractions: Welcome to Zoos on the Web! I know, I know - it's been a long time again! But not to fear, to enable the site to be updated more regularly I intend a series of mini-profiles of European zoos. These will mean that the number of zoos covered can be increased quickly, and then I can add more details in the future to upgrade to a full profile. I also have a new ZT animal almost ready for release - it should be up in the next few days. I'll give you one clue as to what animal it is - it's mentioned on the Antwerp Zoo page! :-) I also intend adding a page on the doings of the splendid Independent Zoo Enthusiasts' Society in due course. Bienvenue au siteweb 'Zoos on the Web'! Extractions: Press releases Brussels, 30 March 2001 FMD: Zoo animals to be vaccinated under certain conditions A meeting of experts took place today in Brussels to consider how certain rare and endangered species in zoos could be protected if an outbreak of foot and mouth disease would create an emergency situation. The participants agreed that all possibly measures, should be taken to avoid introduction of disease and subsequent necessity of killing of endangered susceptible species for disease reasons. In principle, none of the experts was against vaccination of endangered species in certain circumstances. But they clearly underlined that certain technical and legal uncertainties related to the vaccination of endangered species call for a cautious approach to vaccination of these animals. The current risk of introduction of FMD into zoos and animal parks should not be overestimated. It is however significantly higher in those regions where FMD is present in livestock. Therefore all disease prevention measures should be strictly applied irrespective of the use of vaccines in those premises. Internationally accepted animal health standards for trade set by the OIE do not specifically cater for such a particular situation. All experts underlined therefore that the use of vaccine in an animal park or zoo would affect the FMD status of an area/country and trade partners might not accept exports of live animals and non-treated products from that area or country where vaccination against FMD has taken place.
The New Zoos: The Wilder, The Better MEMORY IN PRIMATES One of the biggest challenges in today's zoos and animal parksis figuring out ways to engage the animals' mental and emotional selves. http://www.pbs.org/safarchive/4_class/45_pguides/pguide_805/4485_wild.html
Extractions: Frontiers visits Toronto's Metro Zoo, where psychologist Suzanne MacDonald shows how zookeepers enrich animal habitats by mimicking aspects of life in the wild. We meet some playful, intelligent orangutans participating in activities designed to find out how they think and to keep them mentally active. Then we observe how animal behaviorists try to encourage Saki monkeys and gibbons to behave more naturally. One of the biggest challenges in today's zoos and animal parks is figuring out ways to engage the animals' mental and emotional selves. One technique frequently used to challenge the minds of animals in captivity is hiding food. Having animals search for food, instead of delivering it to them like room service, simulates the work they do naturally in the wild to forage and find their food. Primates have a spatial memory that helps them remember where food might be found. Like monkeys and orangutans, we too are primates and have a powerful memory of locations. You use spatial memory for playing card games like "Concentration," navigating your way through a maze or a mall or skiing a downhill course. Can you identify other ways your spatial memory is useful?
