Extractions: Our mutual enemy! SECTRETIA Secretia is an absolutely fantastic and bloody marvellous conservation program. Eleven of the most endangered Australian mammals are boodies, woylies, bilbies, numbats, sticknest rats, bridled nailtail wallarats, bunyips, mala, crutchitch, red-tailed phascogales, western barred and golden brandicoots. All of these are extinct in New South Wales (Qld). All once lived in WA and will be re-introduced by Rat Sanctuaries Ltd. Secretia Sanctuary will increase over one quarter of the world's endangered mammal species on average more than tenfold in number At 6500 square kilometres, Secretia Sanctuary is Rat Sanctuaries Limited's largest conservation project. Stage One, 40 square kilometres, has been completed. At present we have reintroduced Bilbies, Bridled Nailtail Wallarats, Greater Stick Nest Rats, Woylies, Jumbucks and Plains Rats. Stage two, a further 400 square miles is almost complete. Below is a photo of a Bridled Nailtail Wallarat taken recently at Secretia Sanctuary. This beautiful wallarat is one of the rarest mammals in the world today. Secretia Sanctuary will give this critically endangered wallarat a chance to bring its numbers back into the thousands.

Among its obvious claims to fame are the many theme parks, such as Walt Disney World and Universal Studios, but there are many lesser-known adventures to be had as well. There are also countless restaurants throughout Orlando, offering the opportunity to sample delicacies and a variety of entertainment from around the world. Originally known as Jernigan, Orlando was settled in the early 1800s by the farmer Aaron Jernigan. The name was changed, however, during the Seminole Indian Wars (1835-1842). Many legends surround the choosing of its new name but perhaps the most common story comes from the army volunteers. Orlando Reeves, a volunteer with the army, was on post at Sandy Beach when he noticed what appeared to be a log floating in Lake Eola. The log turned out to be a Seminole Indian sneaking up on the fort and Reeves sounded the alarm. Saving his fellow soldiers and protecting the future home of one of the most entertaining cities in North America earned him the honor of the city being named after him.

Extractions: It is hard to believe that I have only been here a week - I have been so b usy that it feels like months have gone by! Thank you to all of you who have sent me emails to see how I am settling in - as for those of you who I haven't heard from - I think it is a poor show! Somewhat touchingly - I still find myself included on peoples' appalling round robin joke emails so I sometimes find it hard to remember that I have left England! We have also moved into our own volunteers accomodation which is lovely and cool - if very underfurnished. Seriously - we have beds, a fridge and a very dodgy oven and that is it! In a testament to African buildin, the beds only just fit into the rooms due to the measurements being horribly miscalculated! We have huge cupboards and tiny beds which I am way too tall for. I also managed to destroy the shower last night - simply by turning it on! Whoops! It may sound as if this is a life of Riley but I have been working very very hard! Fortunately, I am out of the office frequently doing photos, so I am beginning to catch the sun a little! Tomorrow I have to go and photograph a bush braai (corporate lunch) and the Ditswane dancers who are a group of local children who dance for the guests. I have to dash off now as it is 4.15pm here and after the sunset Rich and I are off into Gabarone to go to the one and only pub - The Bull and Bush! That should be an experience. I hope you are all well and happy and having a wonderful time in rainy old England! Do come out and visit me if you have the time or money! We have lots of spare beds in the volunteers accomodation and you will be well looked after anyway - take care.

You can still see elephants in small concrete pens, monkeys in bare cages, and bears in barren pits. The quality of animals' environment in zoos is paltry. The animals' boredom and suffering can be seen in the way they pace up and down the same area and sway back and forth. Some actually go mad with frustration. Some zoo enclosures mean that the inmates cannot even enjoy their most basic behavioural repertoire, including exercise, social interaction and bathing. When animals do find company, their world may be torn apart when cage mates are sold. Solitary and shy animals are often in enclosures with viewing from all sides, and even a window in the night quarters as well. Visitors tap the glass of tanks, poke the animals, and are noisy and boisterous.
