Good introduction to Zambia
While written for a school-age reader, ZAMBIA provides an excellent introduction to this struggling nation. Instead of glossing over the huge problems in Zambia, the book explains the issues in a balanced manner, particularily the post-colonial problems. The kindness of the people, the striving for a better society, and the potential riches of the country are all emphasized. It's a nice little book with lots of color photos, lots of Chokwe masks and scenes from dances and ceremonies.It wouldn't be high on my listed of recommended books unless you specifically were interested in more detail and more examples of this particular style of mask or wanted to know more about tribal life. ... THE NAVY AND ITS WORK

To the Navy that alone has made this campaign possible, we soldiers owe our grateful thanks. But there have been times when, in our blindness, we have failed to realise how great the task was to blockade 400 miles of this coast and to keep a watchful eye on Mozambique. For before the Portuguese made common cause with us, there was a great deal of gun-running along the southern border of German East Africa, which our present Allies found impossible to watch. Two factors materially aided the Germans in making the fight they have. First, there was the lucky "coincidence" of the Dar-es-Salaam Exhibition. This exhibition, which was to bring the whole world to German East Africa in August, 1914, provided the military authorities with great supplies of machinery, stores and exhibits from all the big industrial centres; and these were swiftly adapted to the making of rifles and munitions of war. To this must be added the most important factor of all, the _Königsberg_, lying on the mud flats far up the Rufigi, destroyed by us, it is true, but not before the ship's company of 700, officers and men, and most of the guns had been transported ashore, the latter mounted on gun carriages and dragged by weary oxen or thousands of black porters to dispute our advance. What did you like best about this book?

IN-DEPTH KNOWLEDGE AND RESEARCH. Author Mwizenge S. Tembo's passion for his subject in
THE BRIDGE infuses every page and is infectious. In this story, Tembo brings Zambia to life, "like a
secret hidden at the end of a mysterious bush trail." Impressive visual descriptions and incredible attention
to detail make the reader feel as if he, too, has entered Zambia. The story concept is compelling and
includes enough suspense to keep the reader turning pages. The physical packaging of the book is
evocative and eye-catching. The cover photo is lovely and serves to capture the reader's interest. The back
cover bio gives a very good account of the author and lets the reader know that he is an expert on the
country of Zambia.

How can the author improve this book?

While THE BRIDGE gives a wonderfil glimpse into a fascinating country and its people, there are a few
areas the author might wish to consider improving. There are a few plot threads that aren't hlly developed,
such as at the book's opening when it's unclear to the reader exactly how the police were summoned or
knew to arrive. At times narrative is used in places where dialogue and action would be more effective in
revealing the story. The pacing moves a little too slowly or too quickly at times and needs more balance
and flow. The book might be improved by careful editing, with attention to spelling and word choice.
Overall, readers will enjoy THE BRIDGE and its unique journey into Zambia. ... Read more
