Editorial Review Product Description Written by a member of the last generation of British Colonial Service Officers in Africa, the book seeks to place both colonial rulers and their African successors in the context of history and the circumstances of their time, viewing their achievements and failures critically but not unsympathetically and comparing colonial society with that of the independent African country that Northern Rhodesia has become. Colonialism is viewed at the day to day level of the administration of a rural district by four officers and a handful of African district messengers, who worked together without even a telephone to assist them. With a wealth of detail that can only come from experience, Grant’s work makes an important contribution to the understanding of a time, place, period and practices that are only now being considered in a balanced way. |

Contents... In this introduction to Zambia, Dr. Burdette addresses a group of puzzling questions. Why is such a rich country experiencing economic troubles? Why does it seem destined to be locked in long-term combat with international lenders? Is the state, in fact, moving toward economic independence or is it being dominated once again by its more industrialized neighbors and various Western states? Finally, how do ethnic and class factors affect the tone and content of modern Zambian politics, and how will they combine to affect the nation's future? ... Read more |

A wonderful collection of nostalgia about Zambia "Tales of Zambia" is a collection of 86 separate short vignettes about Zambian history, culture, nature and natural wonders. It is illustrated with a great number of photographs. In my copy, they're all black and white. I'm not sure if the hardcover is the same. Among the stories, there are short accounts of grass burning in the bush to catch rodents, the establishment of the Munda-Wanga Botanical Gardens outside of Lusaka, the Chirundu Fossil Forest (now mostly destroyed by neglect and ravaging tourists), and the Livingstone Memorial where Dr. David Livingston was buried. There are also accounts of the discovery of Victoria Falls and the amazing disaster and recovery during the Mufulira copper mine Collapse in the 1970's. For the most part, I think this a book that would appeal to people who have lived in Zambia, or have a distinct interest in this region of Africa. As I said, the vignettes are of a very nostalgic nature and have their greatest appeal for someone familiar with the country. I myself enjoyed the book greatly. It reminded me of home. ... Editorial Review Product Description Subjects covered include the country's history and geography, ethnic groups and their cultures. All the provinces of Zambia and their natural resources and important landmarks are also covered in the book. So are towns and cities in each of the provinces. Much of the work is focused on how the people live in their traditional societies and in the towns and cities, including the people of different ethnic groups - some from neighbouring countries especially Tanzania and Malawi - who work in the mines in the Copperbelt Province and how they interact with each other and with the indigenous people of Zambia. Some of the people who may find this work to be useful include tourists and others going to Zambia or anybody else who wants to learn some basic facts about the country. Students may also find this work to be useful. |
