Land ownership, and rights of use of land, have been central issues for many countries throughout history, and for many are also issues of the day. In Zimbabwe, for the first ten years after independence in 1980, land redistribution was limited largely to that occurring on a "willing-buyer, willing-seller" basis (as defined by the Lancaster House Agreement). During this time some three million hectares of commercial farmland was purchased by the government at market value, assisted by grants from the UK government. Some 52,000 families, focusing on the landless and poor from overpopulated and environmentally degraded communal land, but also some war veterans, were resettled. There was considerable controversy surrounding this process and its management, as to whether the intended objectives were being fulfilled, the slow pace at which reform was proceeding, and the means by which the processes in place were enhancing or undermining economic and environmental development and stability. Small towns are growing in Africa. Located at the interface between the rural and the urban they seem to offer opportunities for households and individuals to combine resources in ways that can keep poor people afloat in the current era of dramatic transformation of their conditions for livelihood. Liberalization and structural adjustment in combination with the disastrous effects of the Aids pandemic have put heavy pressures on the conditions of poorer sections of the population. Major adjustments in livelihood strategies are obviously required. Among these are new patterns of mobility and new provisioning relations which are also bound to lead to changes in the settlement patterns.

This study seeks to establish how the individual migrant uses mobility to negotiate the economic landscape. This involves mobility directed towards small towns to access advantageous provisioning possibilities and also the engagement in a multitude of family linkages from the small town to other places within the settlement system. Substantiated through a case study of Rusape, Zimbabwe, this study suggests that lower living costs, higher food security and a more accessible labor market may be attracting migrants from higher level urban centers. The role of the network of kin relations in mobility is important and migrants' networks over space cover both rural homes and urban areas. The access to networks, however, is being stratified under structural adjustment and the ability to maintain linkages with relatives is declining. worth reading, but real limitations
I'm always astounded at the prices for books in this series, they seems excessive and inexplicable.

The issues I had with this particular book were as follows:

1) There is repetitious text - identical info repeated

2) The section on gender seems to want to argue from the start that women are equal.They cite the Mugabe divorce law as evidence - clearly they haven't read the law. It has severe limitations, ie allowing traditional custom to override this statute in regards to women's rights to inherit property on divorce.And having just spent 10 days in rural Eastern Zimbabwe, it's clear that rural women don't have equal rights. The urban situation is much more equal.

3) The book doesn't provide any info on cultural or behavorial taboos or positive behaviors to recognize/emulate, ieg clapping in a certain manner (different for men and women) to show respect.One is left with no info on appropriate or inappropriate behaviors.

4) In discussing music in Zimbabwe, the book makes no mention of the HIV/AIDS awareness songs one hears so prevalently in schools and military marches.

5) Finally, the book relies heavily on literature to draw societal conclusions, rather than direct observation.

So it's worth reading, but a very incomplete and insufficiently researched text and way overpriced.

This paper explores the physical and imaginative construction of the Zimbabwean 'lowveld' landscape. A powerful legacy of the colonial encounter with Zimbabwe was the notion that the lowveld is a wilderness. This logic underpinned attempts to preserve or rehabilitate parts of the lowveld landscape as pristine and glorious pieces of national heritage and, more recently, attempts to exploit sustainably 'wilderness quality' and wildlife. The landscape has been physically modified accordingly - often to the detriment of many of its inhabitants. This has played out in oxymoronic attempts to manufacture wilderness in a national park, conservancies and game ranches. But this vision has recently come under its most severe attack to date as these new wildernesses have been re-peopled, and the politics of land and the needs of black smallholders, pushed to the top of the national agenda.
