Product Description

120 stunning photographs reveal the treasures of Canada's national park system.

"Gateways to nature, to discovery to solitude, to celebrate the beauty and infinite variety of our land" is how Parks Canada defines the country's more than 35 national parks. In this book, authors and photographers travel to selected parks across Canada. Along the way they visit remarkable ecological niches and meet people long linked to these intriguing places. From the fog-bound Pacific shore at Gwaii Haanas to Newfoundland's Gros Morne along the Atlantic, from Jasper. Banff, and Yoho in the Rocky Mountains, to remote parks in the vast interior plains, and finally to the wild seemingly endless expanse of the far north in Ivvavik -- experience a rich sampling of Canada's national parks and reserves. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars travel notes by National Geographic journalists
This book consists of essays, or rather travel notes, put together by a National Georgaphic team. They write about their impressions from travelling through Canada's national parks by boat, horse, or by foot. They write about everything they see, stories they are told by the natives, the weather, their findings in the forest, their guides, etc. The photographs in the book are as stunning as you would expect from National Geographic photographers. However, if you are planning to go to one of these parks, you would hardly find any useful information in this book. There are no maps, no info on activities, lodging, not even clear information how to get to the location where the beautiful pictures in the book were taken. This book is a good choice to read if you want are curious about Canada's national parks, but have no intention of going there.

1-0 out of 5 stars Guide to the National Parks- NOT
Nat'l Geo. puts out a great book, 'Guide to the National Parks,' of theU.S. with much helpful information for travelers. This book has no suchinformation. It claims to have detailed maps of which there is only one. Ithas no park specific info like the U.S. guide. It's best use is to weightdown a coffee table, except that it's softcover. If pictures are your bagthen this is probably a good book for you. If getting into the out of doorsis your goal then this book is of no help at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars In a word - Spellbinding
This book has the perfect balance of photography and story telling. Being an aspiring landscape photographer, this book was truly inspirational.

Not to mention that if you love the mountains (but live inthe city), this book will make you want torelocate. Unbelievably goodphotography. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Look, but don't read
Poorly laid out souvenir book.Nigel Dennis's pictures are fine, but the captions are badly positioned. The maps are few and devoid of detail. The biggest problem is the text, which is largely a geology treatise on the park...fine for the Grand Canyon, or Purnululu, but not Kruger, where the animals are the highlight.Very little on animal/animal interaction, the phenomenal bird life, fascinating riverine environments, etc.Save your money...there's more and better organized information in the pamphlet you get when you pay your entry fee to the park.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exciting summary of this complex African ecosystem.
The pictures, the dialog, and the maps leave one with a haunting awarenessof the complexity of natural systems.Animals, plants, and geology weavetogether into a balance that is always changeing. ... Read more

Product Description
Ethics on the Ark presents a passionate, multivocal discussion—among zoo professionals, activists, conservation biologists, and philosophers—about the future of zoos and aquariums, the treatment of animals in captivity, and the question of whether the individual, the species, or the ecosystem is the most important focus in conservation efforts. Contributors represent all sides of the issues. Moving from the fundamental to the practical, from biodiversity to population regulation, from animal research to captive breeding, Ethics on the Ark represents an important gathering of the many fervent and contentious viewpoints shaping the wildlife conservation debate. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A little one sided
I wanted a book that discussed the ethics behind captive animals, however this book was decidedly one sided. While I generally agree with animal rights ethics, I wanted to learn more about the reasons TO keep animals captive, and this book did not furnish that side.In fact, I felt most of the submitting authors displayed a hostile tendancy. It is a decent book on the history of zoos, as long as you're only interested in seeing this subject from one perspective. It left me feeling defensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good material on history and future of zoos
This is an excellent resource for anyone interested in the history and future of zoos and animal parks, as well as offering an assessmentof present day facilities.Pro and con essays on a variety of topics relatedto zoo management, aquisition of animals and captive breeding provide bothsides of the controversial issue of maintaining animals in captivity. Slight bias toward the view of zoos as the only viable future situation forwildlife but still offers critical analysis of

issues involved. ... Read more

Product Description
One puff adder; one antelope; one crocodile. These were the animals on the sick list with which Oliver Graham-Jones was presented on his first day as veterinary officer of London Zoo. It was 1950, and the care of wild animals in zoos was in its infancy. Previously sick animals had been placed in the care of their keepers, kept from public view, and if they didn't respond to traditional medications allowed to pass quietly away. But Oliver was to change all this. A pioneer of many of the techniques now used by vets around the world, he was instrumental in building the first animal hospital, and in moving London Zoo away from its Victorian past into the high-tech world of modern veterinary medicine. In Zoo Tails, he tells us about some of the animals he cared for: what it felt like when he was faced with an escaped bear or an injured elephant; and what he did when called upon to perform a colostomy on a python, or when he was asked to fit one of the ravens in the Tower of London with a wooden leg. If a dangerous animal escaped or required urgent medical attention, Oliver Graham-Jones was always on hand, ready for any eventuality.Frequently describing himself as quaking with fear, he comes across as humane, skilful and most of all incredibly brave. If you are a lover of animals in any shape or form, and My Family and Other Animals was an essential part of your childhood reading, then Zoo Tails is for you. Filled with wonderfully funny stories (with titles like Chased by a Gorilla or A Leopard in the Cabinet Room) which are told with appealingly self-deprecating humour, Zoo Tails deserves to become a classic in animal literature. ... Zoo Tails written by the most respected and well-known zoo vet
This book is great and it gives you a warm feeling of humanity, exploring insights into the world of a zoo vet. It is both funny, sad, and 100% real life. Oliver Graham-Jones was the first vet to work at the well-known London Zoo in the 1950's. It was a time of great change and developments in animal welfare. During his time at London zoo he helped stop TB, developed the dart gun, and many surgical procedures that are now undertaken by human Doctors today. They including hip implants, heart implants, etc. The book is made up of 26 individual stories that make a larger whole, which makes it ideal for a train, bedtime or bath time reads. It is available (at Amazon)in soft and hard back (Large and small print version)and on audio tape and it was number ten in the best sellers lists last year in the UK. It will make an ideal present for all ages and backgrounds.
The forwards were from Dr Desmond Morris and Sir Patrick Moore, who are Oliver's great friends. If you have any comments on the book please leave your message,
As you might have guessed by now the author is my 83 dear old father who I am very proud. I was involved in some of the original proof reading and have actually read the book many times. However, it is one of those rare books that can be read and re-read.
Have a great read. Best regards

Synopsis
In 1951 Oliver Graham Jones was appointed Curator of mammals at London Zoo, becoming Senior Veterinary Officer in 1960, a post he held until his retirement in 1969. This is a collection of tales from his days at the zoo during the 1950s and 1960s.

This was the list of sick animals presented to Oliver Graham-Jones on his first day as veterinary officer at London Zoo.

It was 1951, and the care of wild animals in zoos was in its infancy. Previously, sick animals had been placed in the hands of their keepers and kept from public view. If a dangerous animal escaped or required urgent medical attention, Oliver was always on hand ready for any eventuality. In Zoo Tails, he tells us about some of the extraordinary animals he looked after: how he anaesthetized, and was chased by, a gorilla; captured an angry polar bear in thick fog; performed a colostomy on a python; and fitted a raven in the Tower of London with a wooden leg.

Filled with wonderfully funny stories, told with delightfully self-deprecating humour, this is a book that will appeal to lovers of animals great and small.
