Extractions: July 2001 Report - Summer Report The 30 th June will certainly be remembered as the blackest day of the year for German musical lovers. Three much-loved musicals closed on the same evening - Phantom of the Opera in Hamburg (after exactly eleven years), in Bremen (after two years and four months) and in Oberhausen (after one year and nine months). Whose idea it was to close all shows on the same day I do not know, but it must have brought many a musical lover to the brink of tears deciding which show to see. However, for me it wasn't that difficult though I had enjoyed both Jekyll and Tabaluga , it was the Phantom I wanted to say goodbye to (well, the choice wasn't mine actually - otherwise I would have had to deal with a very furious mother whose favourite show Phantom had always been and who wanted to see it one last time). The trip to Hamburg also enabled me to re-visit the Operettenhaus where I had said goodbye to my own favourite musical

Extractions: December 2002 Report For a while it seemed that musicals were dying a slow death in Germany, but the patient is now on the mend. The last two months saw a few interesting new shows opening with many more on the way. It seems that the new big player in the scene Joop van den Ende's StageHolding - has really managed to win the audience's confidence and lure them back to the musical theatres. The felines are doing excellent business - Lion King in Hamburg is still permanently sold out a year since its opening and Cats in Berlin is already looking into ways to extend beyond the planned run of one year. A new production of Phantom of the Opera in Stuttgart has just opened, starring once more Ian Jon Bourg who was also the last Phantom in Hamburg and newcomer Janine Kitzen as Christine. The opening night of Abba's Mamma Mia in Hamburg was a spectacular success and the northern-German TV-station NDR dedicated an entire evening to the Abba phenomenon. I will see the show in December and will tell you more about it in my next newsletter, but tickets are selling like mad and it's obvious already that StageHolding have a new hit on their hands. Extractions: Preview review ;-) PHANTOM 23. Oktober 2002, Stuttgart Wie schon bei meinen ersten Besuchen im SI-Centrum in Stuttgart kam mir auch am 23. Okt. wieder als erstes der Gedanke an Disneyland in den Kopf als Bernie und ich den Gebäudekomplex betraten, in dem nun unser maskierter Freund ein neues Zuhause gefunden haben sollte. Da wir ziemlich früh im SI waren, spazierten wir noch ein wenig durch die Gegend und konnten jedes Mal, wenn wir am Eingang des Palladium Theaters vorbeikamen sehen, wie weit die fleißigen Teppichleger gekommen waren, die schnell noch das kleine Stück grünen Teppich vor dem Theater durch einen roten austauschten. Pünktlich um kurz vor acht waren sie übrigens fertig :-). Als wir so in Richtung Stage Door des Apollo Theaters (TdV) kamen, sahen wir ganz zufällig, dass auf der Probebühne noch fleißig Phantom geübt wurde und so *lurkten* wir ein bisschen , wie es sich für zwei anständige Phantom Phans gehört, und stellten uns immer mehr auf ein Wiedersehen mit dem Phantom ein. Da wir es natürlich gar nicht erwarten konnten, in das Theater zu stürmen, standen wir gleich ganz vorn als um etwa halb acht endlich Einlass war. Gewöhnungsbedürftig ist es schon, das Palladium Theater, denn obwohl viele Leute die Flora für ziemlich hässliches Theater halten, fand ich sie eigentlich recht schön. Leider schienen nicht allzu viele Phantom Phans bei dieser 2. Preview zu sein, was wir doch sehr schade fanden, da bei einer Phanvorstellungen einfach eine ganz andere Stimmung im Theater herrscht. Auf der Castliste fanden wir viele alte und ganz unbekannte Namen und waren mehr als gespannt, nach welchen Regeln man in Stuttgart Phantom spielt. In der ersten Reihe Platz genommen (man gönnt sich ja sonst nichts ;-)) wuchs unsere Nervosität wahrscheinlich weit über die der Darsteller selbst heraus und wir konnten es kaum noch aushalten, bis endlich das Licht gedämmt wurde und der Prolog begann......

I got the tickects from the extra money from the homecoming dance that I couldn't go to since my date turned me down. So I bought the tickects from the school's band who were going to see Phantom. ^_^v This was going to be fun! I couldn't wait until the whole band would be converted into phans...which the majority turned into, but there was a slight problem...Davis had laryngitis so his understudy had to fill in. The show began and I saw so excited and pre-hyped about it. I even shedded a tear during the chandelier scene. Patricia Hurd was still Carlotta...some understudies here and there. There was a Christine understudy, Susan Facer...yet she seemed nervous a little because her voice cracked at some points. Ian Jon Bourg as the Phantom...kill me please. x.x His phantom is what Hollywood wants. His potrayal was so one dimensional and for a moment I thought he was going to rape Christine...x.x I swore he was an octive lower than Davis Gaines...ick he was so horrible during Music of the Night that I wanted to run out of the theater an puke! *dies*

Extractions: It is a quest story, complete with a noble task (the rescue of Pamina), talismans, trials and transformation. But it is an interior quest; Tamino must abandon illusion (his allegiance to the dazzling Queen of the Night), integrate the elements of his personality (represented by himself, Papageno and Pamina and Papagena), and take his place as a free, mature agent in an enlightened society. The private, essentially Romantic idealism of the late Enlightenment shines like a white beacon unyellowed by corny, opera buffa local color. This is not to say that this "Flute" is austere or humorless. The insubstantiality of time and place heightens the flesh-and-blood presence of the four central characters - Ian Jon Bourg's Tamino, Shuler Hensley's Pagageno, Heather Dials' Papagena and Karen Bogan's Pamina. Papageno's predicaments are all the funnier when stripped of affectation. Bogan's lush physicality and emotionally hot singing maker her the necessary complement of Bourg's lofty Tamino. Gary Jankowski's warm, even and blessedly unsentorian bass purged Sarastro of the all-too usual pomp and filled him with civility and wisdom. home back to stage credits
