This week, addressing criticism about Hollywood's propensity for "runaway production," Scientology kingpin, John "OTIII" Travolta, says he has no problems about making a propaganda film version of L. Ron Hubbard's "Battlefield: Earth" in Canada, and Canada has no problem with the $80 million movie being filmed there. This further proves Canada is evil. In a more civilized part of the world, Dr. Jane "Queen Kong" Goodall and several anthropologists have sent letters of protest to Ted "NWO" Turner regarding the TBS program, "The Chimp Channel." Goodall is "sad and disappointed that [TBS is] backing the use of chimps and other apes in entertainment." Goodall led a similar protest in 1996 when Oliver, a chimp with human-like qualities (Science, 1 November 1996, p. 727), was being used to mix drinks at scientific research symposium post-parties. Joining Goodall was NRA love charm, Charlston Heston, who insisted that stopping monkey entertainment and exploitation would prevent them from organizing, rising up against man, and taking over the planet. In addition, Heston called for the death of Ricardo Montalban because "he's secretly hiding a talking chimp in his circus." Not since "Buster and Me" went off the air in the 80s has there been such an uproar over chimp rights. Roddy McDowall could not be reached for comment because he's dead. Extractions: e-mail this article A Touch of Class R ight away, Phyllis (Telma Hopkins) makes it clear which sister got the raw deal in UPN's new sitcom, Half and Half . According to her, it was Mona, her daughter. Phyllis' ex, Charles, is now married to Big Dee Dee and they have a daughter, also named Dee Dee. As Phyllis puts it, while Mona was "growing up in the city, riding the bus... princess Dee Dee spent the summers in the country riding her pony." So that's the setup: two half-sisters who are raised in different economic circumstances, but now live in the same San Francisco apartment building. Charles promised the upstairs apartment to both daughters. He owns several rental properties and is caught in the middle as the young women and their mothers who have more than 20 years of beef fight about the space. A coin toss resolves the dispute and everyone races up to see the prize, which, amazingly, neither daughter had seen. Mona, the coin toss winner, learns that she's giving up her downstairs apartment for a tiny space with sloped ceilings. Getting stuck with the attic apartment is just one more slight in a lifetime of coming in second to Dee Dee. "Ever since the little princess was born, I've been treated like a raggedy, one-eyed doll you shove in the back of a dusty old drawer, or stinky old attic."

Extractions: AP TELEVISION WRITER PASADENA - WB and UPN vowed to include minority characters in their series despite a trend toward all-white broadcast television. ``We think it's good business for us,'' WB Chief Executive Officer Jamie Kellner told the Television Critics Association annual summer gathering Tuesday. WB in its early days relied heavily on black-oriented sitcoms such as ``The Jamie Foxx Show,'' but its new fall series are stocked with young white characters - as is the case with the big four networks, ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox. In introducing shows under development, WB highlighted a series from writer-producer Yvette Lee Bowser (``Living Single,'' ``For Your Love''), a comedy-drama about a young African-American woman. ``The Miseducation of Piper Fein'' has been in the works off and on for three years, Ms. Bowser said. Asked if its creation was accelerated because of the current controversy, she replied: ``Not at all.'' The exclusion of minority characters is an ongoing problem, Ms. Bowser said. ``But a change is going to come,'' she added, because minorities are increasingly aware of the impact a ``homogenized'' culture can have on society.

Extractions: "The X-Files (news - Y! TV)" alumnus Frank Spotnitz will continue his pursuit for the truth out there now that he has signed on as showrunner of Michael Mann's untitled new police drama series for CBS. Spotnitz's decision to join the show helped clinch the series order for the project on the eve of CBS' fall schedule presentation to advertising buyers in New York today. After eight years on "X-Files," Spotnitz said he had been planning to focus on features and wasn't looking to jump right into another TV show, "but opportunities like this just don't come along every day, so I went for it." The Mann drama centers on a captain (Tom Sizemore) and his team of cops in the elite robbery/homicide division of the Los Angeles Police Department that was also the subject of Mann's 1995 feature "Heat," which featured Sizemore. In addition to the chance to work with Mann and Sizemore, Spotnitz said what attracted him to the project was that "it looks like nothing else on TV. 'The X-Files' is a very hard act to follow, and this is something that in a very different way is also new to TV." Spotnitz, repped by Endeavor, is also staying in business with "X-Files" creator Chris Carter the two are working together on the second "X-Files" feature and Spotnitz also has a feature pact with Dimension Films.

Definition Of Generation X generations. We're as diverse as any ethnic group, said YvetteLee bowser, the 31year-old creator of Living Single. I think http://www.albany.net/~genxtv/define.html
Extractions: Defining Gen X TV One of the most frustrating things about writing this book was defending the use of the term Generation X. A lot of people get upset that anyone would dare use such a label. When the cast of Friends appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show in March 1995, Winfrey asked the show's six stars what they thought of the term. "I just hate the label in general," replied David Schwimmer, who plays Ross on the hit sitcom about six twentysomethings. "Because to me it connotes a kind of slacker and all my peers are aggressively pursuing either jobs, relationships, or just trying to come to grips with their identities. And no one is kind of just laying back going, 'Let it happen, we're Generation X.'" Generation X is not synonymous with "slacker," but to many people these words have come to mean the same thing. That's what happens when the media names a generation after a piece of fiction (Douglas Coupland's 1991 book Generation X ) or a punk band (Billy Idol's late-70s group), depending on who you ask. The same media that spilled gallons of ink over Generation X has already declared it dead. The New York Times ran the obituary in June 1995 on the "Styles" page under the headline "The Short Shelf Life of Generation X." Coupland himself announced the death of Gen X in the June 1995 issue of the Gen X magazine

Growing up separately, these two virtual strangers suddenly become neighbors in the same San Francisco apartment building and experience the challenges of sisterhood for the first time. Mona (Rachel True), a budding music executive, was raised by her single mother, Phyllis (Telma Hopkins), to be an independent woman who does things in her own free-spirited and sometimes sardonic style. By contrast, younger sister Dee Dee (Essence Atkins) is a privileged honor-roll college student who grew up in a two-parent home, but searches for her own identity out of the shadow of her overbearing mother, Big Dee Dee (Valarie Pettiford). Now in their twenties, these two vastly contrasting women are discovering the advantages and joys that the special bond of sisterhood offers. But their relationship is not without its problems, as they often clash on everything from morals to money to men. Meanwhile Spencer (Chico Benymon), Mona's best friend, becomes the conscience of the group and helps build a bridge between the women. PRODUCTION CBS Productions

(And, even though they gave Jim Belushi 's According to Jim a full-season order, the realization has set in that it sucks. Big time.) That's led ABC to not only ramp up the hunt for next season's new offerings but to fast-track several projects for a possible midseason 2002 premiere. Among the series in the running for a spot as early as March: A sitcom, from
