Extractions: Horne was born in New York City. At the age of 16, she became a chorus dancer at the Cotton Club in Harlem. In 1942, Horne became the first black performer to sign a long-term contract with a major Hollywood film studio. She gained attention with her rendition of the song "Stormy Weather" from the 1943 movie of the same name. After the end of World War II in 1945, Horne became a major nightclub attraction in the United States and Europe. She made a number of movie musicals in the 1940's and 1950's and starred in the Broadway musical Jamaica (1957). She also wrote an autobiography, Lena (1963). In 1983, Horne received the Spingarn Medal in recognition of her achievements.

Horne's father left home when she was only three, and her mother departed to pursue an acting career, leaving the child in the care of her paternal grandmother, a civil rights activist and suffragist in Brooklyn. Horne's mother did return to take her daughter on tour with her. Eventually, her mother remarried and the family returned to New York where Horne attended high school. But financial difficulties forced her to quit school and obtain a position as a chorus dancer at the Cotton Club in Harlem, New York . She was hired for her beauty, but she worked diligently to improve her singing by taking lessons and she became known for her sultry voice. Horne then accepted a role on Broadway in Dance with Your Gods (1934) and afterwards left the Club to sing with Noble Sissle's Society Orchestra in Philadelphia In Philadelphia she was reunited with her father who subsequently played a important role in her life and career until his death in 1970. It was through her father that Horne met Louis Jones, whom she married in 1937. The couple had two children, Gail and Teddy, but divorced in 1941. Horne performed on Broadway in

Most collections focus on her later work, which is a shame, as her earliest recordings are quite good. Her voice is far more subtle and has far more vibrato on the older material, lulling you into a sweet spell. Later in her career, Lena developed a louder more out-front vocal style that dominates the music, as was common in the post-big band era. Although her voice is still wonderful, unlike other singers that also made the transition from the swing years into the slick, sophisticated orchestrations of the fifties (such as Peggy Lee ), Lena just sounds better in her younger days. Featured on this CD are two songs each from her stints with Charlie Barnet and Artie Shaw , as well as work under her own name during the war years, including the famous ''Stormy Weather,'' a song forever linked to her and the highlight of the album. Hart and Rodgers' ''Where or When'' and the bluesy ''Good-for-Nothin' Joe'' are also standouts on the CD, as is the playful ''Love Me a Little Little.'' In fact, the first sixteen songs are all excellent, truly excellent. The last six songs on the CD are more modern, coming from 1955 and 1958 sessions. Although crisp and clear and very good, they just don't blend in well to her earlier material and throw the mood of the album off a little. But don't let that dissuade you from listening to it, it's well worth hearing.
