Extractions: ECA Staff Writer Merriweather Post Pavillion, Columbia, MD - The Second Lilith Fair returned to Maryland this past weekend with a large cast of women artists that included founder Sarah McLachlan, Missy Elliott, Natalie Merchant and of course, on the sometimes forgotten second stage, Holly McNarland. Mc Narland, who began the tour as one of the youngest acts to play at the fair, showed that she definitely deserves a lot of recognition for what she has done so far. The Universal Records star has shown a lot of emotion in her music and the intensity of her music is shown on stage. After listening to some of McNarland's tracks from the Sour Pie album, it is clear that McNarland includes many of her feelings in her music. Mc Narland says that her music comes from her strong encouragement from her mother and the less than agreeable opinion from her father. This is cast in two of Sour Pie's tracks, " Stormy and Dad and I." If she continues this type of music I think that her parents will have much to talk about. Her North American tour should allow her talent to grow and her recognition to grow as well. She has a lot of talent that should be conveyed with all of opportunities that she will have to play.

Extractions: day . Attention is rapidly growing for Holly McNarland and it seems the more awareness Holly devotes to her inner self, the more attention she receives for her music. Hailing originally from Winnipeg, she moved to Vancouver three years ago to experience and surround herself with music. The choice to move has so far been a good one. It's a good thing I didn't have to find Holly in a crowd, because I hadn't met her before, and all I had seen of her were pictures from her CD and press kit. She was sporting a buzz cut on this day which was far different from the pigtails and longer hair she had before. "We were in Vernon playing with the Matthew Good Band and we didn't want to go home, but of course we had to, so both bands decided to shave their heads; it's kind of a fresh start." I can't argue with that what the hell else are you going to do in Vernon? A fresh start may accurately define the recent past for Holly. She has now secured management from Los Angeles "we just did the paperwork" put out an independent CD, Sour Pie , which has been atop the Sam's Indie Chart for a number of weeks, and has just inked a deal with MCA Canada. But, most importantly, she has put together a band that she feels is the cohesive unit she has been looking for and hopes that they will stay together for a long time to come. Bassist Mark Pullyblank, guitarist Sid Johnson and drummer Adam Drake complete the lineup. After having seen Holly McNarland open up for the Skydiggers at the Starfish Room I can see why she wants to see this band stay together for a long time. This is a good band and their heavier rock style complements Holly's intensely powerful voice. As a musical unit, they are a cohesive complement to Holly's "personal" stories and lyrics.

Her music is an edgy brand of pop-rock, recalling times of bad love and other misfortunes of life to fuel her fire. Her lyrics are personal, drenched in regret, anger, and optimism, but they are also written from a stand point where others can sit back and go, "yeah, I know how that is!" Intimate and revealing, she never lets her own feelings overshadow those the listener forms from her music. This CD is emotional, powerful, and very provocative. It provides everything any listener could ever desire. I strongly recommend this CD. Holly McNarland is a talented songwriter, and her voice carries out her words to a tee! You'll be hearing a lot about her in the future. I'll give this CD an A+.

Sour Pie combined with McNarland's magnifying, and nearly indescribable, live presence cemented a record deal and thus her first major label, full length album, Stuff. To say that Stuff is an interesting mix of acoustic guitar and rock music is a bare, inadequate description. The true power of McNarland's music is in the expressiveness of her lyrics. While they might seem oblique on first listen, upon closer examination, the music and lyrics gel together to form a cohesive, passionate moment. McNarland finds it difficult to describe her lyrics. "They're just really honest," she says in her trademark manner, which is quiet, pleasant, and succinct. Peak: Which comes first, the music or the lyrics?
Extractions: Monday, July 14 Musicians are people! No real revelation there, but singer/diva Holly McNarland is trying to kick the smoking habit, just like so many of us. "I'm not going nuts here," she revealed to SEE during a recent phone interview. "Whenever I do (interviews), I'm always smoking. So if I sound kind of weird you know why." McNarland may even be a little tougher than most, since she's not bothering with any of that nicotine patch stuff, "just cold turkey. I just bought a book on yoga, to try and get myself doing something." The McNarland buzz actually began over a year ago when she independently released Sour Pie to feed the attention she was generating in her then home town, Vancouver. But while getting signed might seem like a big deal, for an artist such as McNarland it was almost a necessity. The indie thing was nice but it wasn't paying the bills. That may sound pretty cold, but it's reality. "I don't have any money, I don't have family with money, I don't have anybody that can give me money. When you don't have that option, there's nothing else you can do. You could get a day job, but that's not going to pay for a record." Besides signing the deal and making Stuff, McNarland also relocated to Toronto. "I just needed to move, needed a change." But it wasn't just the location. "I move a lot. I think I grew up moving, so I think that may have something to do with it."
