Just over 10 years ago, British television broadcast the one and only episode of Heil Honey, I'm Home , a sitcom that depicted Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun as modern-day suburbanite slobs. Notorious even before it aired, the show drew widespread condemnation. Evidently, such portrayals of the Fuehrer, even as a buffoon, were not to be tolerated. But that failed attempt to make light of the last century's most infamous man has a distant cousin in Moloch , a 1999 film by Alexander Sokurov, whose little-seen works are now screening in a retrospective at Cinematheque Ontario. In his many features, documentaries and poem-like "elegy" films, the Russian filmmaker has often explored historical themes and tried to discern the place of the past in the present day. With Moloch ; March 1, 6:30pm), Sokurov did what no other filmmaker had done: portray Hitler as a person. As usual, Sokurov's achievement is a peculiar one. As his admirer Ingmar Bergman said of him last year, Sokurov "breaks all the rules on all levels," creating work that is "unexpectedly fascinating."

Extractions: Comments/Inquiries Medium Film Keywords Caregivers Death and Dying Grief Loneliness ... Time Summary A young man (Alexander Anaishnov) has come to take care of his mother (Gudrin Geyer) who lives alone in rural Russia. She is dying. He watches her sleep, takes her for a walk (or rather carries her), reads to her, gives her medicine, and, when she falls asleep, goes for a walk alone. He breaks down and weeps, then returns to his mother, who may still be sleeping or may now be dead. Commentary This beautifully observed film shows us a young man caring for his dying mother. The green countryside, thunderstorm threatening, through which he carries her forms a powerful counterpoint to the darkness and simplicity, but evident warmth, of her cottage. We almost envy the mother, cared for and loved, whereas the son's loneliness as he watches over and grieves for her, the roles of mother and child reversed, is heartbreaking. The film seems to take place in close to real time. For instance, when he watches her sleep, we watch, too, silently, for as long as it takes. When he carries her outside for a walk, we follow what seems to be the entire progress. As a result, the film is slow and will certainly try the patience of some, but it also captures something important about caring for the dying: the slow passing of time when death has become inevitable but will not be hurried along. As we watch the young man watching his mother, we feel with him that every minute is at the same time both precious and excrutiating.

Extractions: Tilman Buttner Invisible to everyone around him, a contemporary filmmaker finds himself in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, back in the early 1700's! He meets a cynical French diplomat from the 19th Century and the men become accomplices in a time-traveling journey through Russia's turbulent past, ending in the present day. The tour which take us through both the Hermitage and the Russian history of the past 300 years, let us witness historical figures like Catherine the Great, Nicholas I, Nicholas II and Peter the Great. No Better Than a Guided Tour It is clearly an exercise in style financed by the Hermitage Museum of St. Petersburg, to mark the 300th anniversary of the city. There's nowhere to go except to show as much of the museum as possible, with its impressive collections. This makes a feature film? The answer as sought by the talented Sokurov is quite clever, as the museum must preserve above all else, its more than 100 year History: Let's reconstitute the historical steps as if such history were horizontal rather than vertical (meaning continuing through time), each step staged in a different room of the museum.

If this movie had been made traditionally several takes of every scene edited together with close-ups, two-shots, etc. its story would still be enthralling as it follows a traveler (or is he a ghost?) set adrift in time inside the breathtakingly grand Hermitage Museum of St. Petersburg, the former Winter Palace of the czars.

Extractions: Find other movie reviews. Alexander Sokurov's spellbinding "Russian Ark," a film done in one unbroken camera shot that moves through St. Petersburg's Hermitage Museum, is a staggering work of art, an unparalleled technical feat that is also cinematic poetry of the first order. As Sokurov's camera glides through 33 rooms of the Hermitage, moving in and out of cathedral-like galleries, opulent ballrooms and shadowy corridors and workrooms, three centuries of Russian history and European art are compressed into a single 96-minute shot. In the dreamlike journey, an unseen modern filmmaker (voiced by Sokurov) is joined by a somewhat scornful French diplomat, the Marquis de Custine (Sergey Dreiden). The Marquis is a weary sophisticate who keeps commenting on the artistic riches of the museum and the vagaries of Russian history bizarrely unfolding before their gaze in room after room. The filmmaker is full of awe, but the black-clad Marquis is jaded - as acridly impatient with modernity (and the contemporary museumgoers they bump into) as he is fond of 19th-century pomp and splendor.
