Product Description

Emma Woodhouse is one of Austen's most captivating and vivid characters. Beautiful, spoiled, vain, and irrepressibly witty, Emma organizes the lives of the inhabitants of her sleepy little village, but her attempts at matchmaking lead to misunderstandings and potential heartbreak. Only her friend and neighbor Mr. Knightley dares to point out the mistakes she is making and encourages her to change her ways. Considered by many to be the best English novel, Emma is at once a charming love story, a detective story, and a comic and lively portrait of English life two hundred years ago. Emma is now a major BBC television series starring Romola Garai, Jonny Lee Miller, and Michael Gambon. Jenny Agutter reads Jane Austen’s classic novel, complete and unabridged.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful for Many Purposes
I think this CD Box Set will be very useful for many purposes, because

(1) you can simply enjoy the English literature without reading it;
(2) people who have a visibility problem can also enjoy the classic novel from cover to cover, as this is unabridged version;
(3) people who are learning English as a foreign language cannot only enjoy the novel but can also learn the way the native British people speak, e.g. the pronunciation, the tone, the speed etc., with Jenny Agutter's beautiful English (slightly fast though);
(4) you can listen to it whenever you have time while you're doing something else, such as driving, cooking or even travelling by air;
(5) good for education and fun for young people who don't have much time to read nowadays or who don't have a mother who can read bedside stories for them like old days..

I think it would be a good present too! It's a very good quality audio book by the BBC, so I can highly recommend this product to anyone!

Hope this helps!

2-0 out of 5 stars Jane Austen Audio collection part 1 "complete"
I have listened to Jane Austen biography and Northanger Abbey.

While I was listening I realized that the books had been abridged.I could not find that on the listing for the item on Amazon.It is written on very fine print on side of large box that contains all the discs.I was very disappointed.

I only give this 2 stars because they have married music with the text in a very unique way. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great characters
This book was what I needed. It has travel components in beautiful settings in England. Very developed characters! You even get connected to characters with small parts (ie the watress in the cafe) The main character is very likable as well as the characters within the town she stops in. The book really does tell us the importance of taking time for ourselves and our children. I would recommend this book to anyone for a easy going summer read. ... Read more

Product Description
Ellen has been living on her own in a picturesque if damp cottage in Cheshire since her husband abandoned her for the pleausres of life in Provence.Struggling to make ends meet and having married once for love, she is now determined that the second time around it will be for money.And why shouldn’t she?Especially when so close to hand is Duncan, her rather pompous but not unattractive divorce lawyer, who is conveniently single as well as being enticingly well off.Encouraged by her elderly friend Hermione, Ellen sets out to secure her future by tempting Duncan to give up his bachelor life and marry her.Then two people enter her life: Jo-Jo, a young homeless girl several months pregnant; and Matthew, an artist who paints murals in country houses and who openly criticises her for being mercenary and devious.But, as hostility gives way to friendship, Ellen realises that she has wavered off course from her original plan and she has to remind herself very strongly indeed that Duncan is the man for her. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Engaging
When Ellen's husband leaves her for a younger woman after twenty years of marriage, she is at first quite shattered, even though her marriage was far from perfect with a husband who needed kinky sex. Soon however, she becomes reconciled to leaving her large, comfortable home and settles into a tiny cottage where she sets up a dried flower business which is a bit slow to get going. The attendant money worries make her dtermined to remarry for money and security, so when the local solicitor, wealthy and eligible Duncan, who took care of her divorce, shows an interest in her, she dismisses some niggling doubts and agrees to marry him. Hermione, her friend and neighbour, has grave doubts about such a marriage, hoping that her godson Matthew and Ellen might be right for each other. The two women befriend JoJo, a pregnant, teenaged runaway who proves to be a catalyst in both their lives and, along with various other characters, both amusing and dark, unfolds a pleasant and readable tale of village life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Airs & Graces
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! It reminded me of a RosamundePilcher book. Thumbs up!

4-0 out of 5 stars Airs & Graces
Enjoyable read. Hermione, Ellen's qirky neighbor was thehighlight of the novel and was the most developed character. However,James could have done so much more with the teenage mother and Mattthew character. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this novel tremendously!

4-0 out of 5 stars Elegantly written novel
I enjoyed James' style of writing although it could be plain sometimes. The plot is very interesting, something that could happen to anyone (divorce, teenage mother, snobbish neighbors). It is one of those books yousmile after you're done w/ the book.Definetely a good read!

4-0 out of 5 stars An Audio Adaption that Goes Beyond The Film.
An excellent adaption of the classic John Landis film, well converted to audio.
In stereo the Radio play is creepy as the film ever was.
With much of the original cast reprising there on screen roles we get a level of experience from a production team with a rep for hamming up performances. Many of the actors reprising roles come from a Shakespeare background and many are the gems of British television.
The exception being the use of radio actors as the 2 lead roles.
They are a perfect example of hammy.
Taking the story past the movie and even incorporating a pre movie scene with an escaped lunatic on the moors will give fans of the film a treat, while the original story is as riveting as ever right up to it's tragic and moving ending.
Director Dirk Maggs can be proud of this. ... Read more

Torn between struggling to live up to the expectations of being a Modern Woman and ridding herself of the effect of a repressed upbringing, Izzy Jordan would be the first to admit that it’s time to take stock of her life and shake things up a bit.She’s thirty-one with a teaching career on the skids – not surprising really, given that she harbours a strong desire to lock her pupils in the art room cupboard and throw away the key.She also has a manipulative mother and an ex-boyfriend whose helpful parting shot – ‘I’m only telling you this for your own good, Izzy’ – was to inform her that she was boring in bed!So when she’s invited to spend the summer on the island of Corfu and is offered the chance of a no strings attached holiday romance with the irresistible Theo Vlamakis, a self-confessed serial romantic, what should she do? Be brave and go with the flow, or listen to the voice of Modern Woman and tell him to sling his hook.Then, just as she thinks she’s made up her mind, along comes Theo’s oldest and closest friend, Mark St James, a crime writer whose turbulent past sets in motion a series of events that will ensure nobody goes home feeling quite the way they did on arrival. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
What I missed and really did look for was if the book on cd was abridged or not. I thought it wasn't but to my disappointment it was. So a waste. Hate abridged books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful and Deep
Reading The Holiday by Erica James was quite simply wonderful.It is an funny but realistic tail of a developing group of friends away on holiday in Greece.This book had the heart of romance with the characterization of classic literature.It will remain a keeper on my book shelf.In fact I rarely buy the same book for multiple people but I have ordered it for my mother, aunt, best friend, and younger sister.

The story mainly follows five central characters. Getting away from England, Max and Laura are happily married and have talked there single friend Izzy into joining them on vacation on the island of Corfu.When they arrive they introduce her to their handsome and flirtatious neighbor Theo.Later they are joined by Theo's lifelong friend Mark a writer.

The book is full of rich and well-rounded supporting characters (Laura and Max's daughter and her friend, the obnoxious British couple who stalk the famous writer, an elderly gentleman, and so much more.) James description of the island of Corfu made me want to return to Greece and laze in the sun.She expertly executes a superb-paced story with everything from the thrill of first love to the soul wrenching fear of death.

As the story unfolds we discover serious issues and emotional torments.Without giving to much away, what I found incredible about Ms. James' writing was her ability to write a serious compelling story while still keeping it fun and light.Rarely lately have I come across an author who delivers great character development without letting the story suffer.

Bravo Ms. James.

2-0 out of 5 stars So disappointed . . .
Hilary hears her husband talking in his sleep saying, "Catherine . . . Hilary must never find out . . . she'd never forgive me. . . the children."Signs point to David having an affair.Talking in his sleep about/to another woman, restaurant bill when he said he was going somewhere else, coming home late, etc.

Is David her perfectly happy husband having an affair?Should she confront him?What will she do?Hilary could lose everything . . .her home, her so called happy life, oh and even the never-happy-always-complaining-mother-in-law . . . well maybe that wouldn't be so bad!

I couldn't understand why Hilary never confronted her husband.Why she just lets her mind come up with the worst case scenarios and goes from there.I truly felt that she just goes on for the ride and tries to make the best of situations instead of tackling the issues head on.I was disappointed in the book because I was expecting more out of it.I wanted more angst, more passion ... just more! ...
