He was a member of the New York Giants in the National League from 1928 to 1943. Early years Hubbell was born in Carthage, Missouri . He was originally signed by the Detroit Tigers and was invited to spring training in 1926. However, pitching coach George McBride and player-manager Ty Cobb weren't impressed with him. Additionally, they were concerned about his reliance on a screwball . Hubbell was sent to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the International League before the start of the season. He went 7 7 on a championship team. In 1927 he was invited to spring training again with Detroit, but McBride and Cobb still weren't impressed and sent him two steps down the minor-league ladder, to the Decatur Commodores of the Illinois-Indiana-Iowa League . Despite going 14 7, the Tigers didn't invite him back for 1928, and he was sent to the Beaumont Exporters of the Texas League . Hubbell was so fed up by this time that he told Beaumont manager Claude Robinson that unless he was sold to another organization by the end of the season, he'd retire and go into the oil business. Years later, he said that being unloaded by the Tigers was the best thing that ever happened to him. Prior to joining the Chicago Bears, Angelo spent 14 years overseeing Tampa Bay Buccaneers' scouting department as their Director of Player Personnel. Angelo graduated from Miami University in 1971. Angelo began his career in the NFL as a scout for both the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys in the early 1980s. Four years later he moved on to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a team that had experienced brief success. An expansion team established in 1976, the Buccaneers lost the 1979 NFC Championship Game to the Los Angeles Rams. What followed were a chaotic series of player tragedies and setbacks that sent the team into a slump. A succession of coaches and numerous roster changes failed to revive the team throughout the 1980s. Angelo was associated with the appearance of front office divisions and management mistakes. By the late 1990s his 14 year tenure in Tampa Bay was perceived as successful as the Buccanneers made the playoffs 3 times from 19972000. With new ownership of the franchise, Angelo moved on to the Chicago Bears. Since taking over the Chicago Bears in 2001, Angelo had a tenuous road ahead of him. Dick Jauron was the coach of the Bears at this time. Jerry Angelo had wanted to hire his own coach who would be better suited to what his plans for the team were.
