This book is one of my favorites! The day-to-day living of a family with quintuplets is captivating. The pictures are precious. You will come away feeling that you know the family. It is wonderful how the Anderson quintuplets were raised as regular children.I also have wondered how the family is doing now, but have not found any information.

Can you imagine having quintuplets when it was hardly ever heard of?Karen Anderson describes her emotions, the physical process, and incredible experience of giving birth to quintuplets. This narrative lets you into their lives on a very personal basis, with many funny moments as well as great parental advice.

This book should be published again for the next generation. The hardcover edition includes excellent photographs from the birth of the quints to age 6, as well as comments from Dr. T. Berry Brazelton.A must-read! ... Read more

From the supplier: Writer Ernest Hemingway was engaged in a dispute for several years with his mentor Sherwood Anderson. Hemingway had, at the time, only just emerged as a recognized writer with his novel 'The Sun Also Rises.' Both authors fictionalized the affair in short stories that used the sport of boxing as a metaphor for their rivalry. Hemingway's 'The Killers' portrayed a young challenger who defeated an established champion, while Anderson's 'The Fight' shows a champion who learns to recognize that all men are doomed to childish expressions of aggression.

Quarantine, What is Old is New: Halifax and the Lawlor s Island Quarantine Station, 1866 -1938

Includes 40 historic photos, many tables and maps,historical/medical appendices, plus it is extensively indexed according to ships, global seaports, medical personel, immigration, historical characters of the late 19th & early 20th Century, as well as diseases of that period - and newer ones of today.

Medical doctor/historian Cameron, reveals the ghosts of our medical past, as well as a detailed history of the times and maritime/marine shipping from the age of sail into that of steel and steam. It is a tale of tragic events, unimaginable hardships, public health successes/failures, government footdragging, remarkable bravery and unforgivable incompetence.

As new diseases such as H1N1 (bird flu), Ebola, and SARS threaten, along with an anticipated and much feared influenza pandemic, we must learn lessons from the past. This book is an important contribution to medicine, public health and maritime history, as well as an intriguing history of Halifax though a long list of regional and world wars, including the involvement of many of its more prominent citizens.

A great book for historians (amateur or professional), especially 19th Century maritime events/ships,all medical doctors, plus those interested in the sea, global seaports, immigration history and the history of dread disease, including critical lessons for our future.

This book has important parallels for immigration to the USA, and quarantine stations on the eastern seaboard, as well as for cooperation among countries to control epidemic disease. ... Read more

Product Description
Our society today is undergoing tremendous assaults on marriage and the family. Sadly, many people do not realize the extent to which their enemies are succeeding. If this attack continues unchecked, the consequences will be disastrous. The battle currently being waged focuses particularly on marriage and is culminating in the fight for homosexual "marriage." Proponents have persuaded much of the public that such unions are a matter of "justice," a matter of "rights."The authors lead the reader through the homosexual marriage debate in these key areas: Same-sex unions and society, the nature of marriage, political considerations, what the Church teaches, what the Bible says, and what medical science reveals.Their goal is to help citizens recover a known but marginalized truth: Marriage and family life ordered to the divine design builds healthy communities. The cultural battle for the preservation of marriage is not one of religion, politics, geography, or ethnicity. Marriage is, quite simply, the human future. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely valuable
This book is valuable in all respects. It is the type of information same sex attracted activists don't want you to have as factual information undermines support for same sex marriage.

You may have already worked out that the "born that way" claim is bunk for a variety of reasons. This book reveals how same sex attractions really develop and how young children display warning symptoms that something is wrong well before they develop a same sex attraction. It explains what normal experiences these children have been deprived of and what remedial action can be taken to ensure they get the normal developmental experiences that prevent a same sex attraction from developing.

Apart from a brief religious blurb at the end and some autobiographical comments the book should be of interest to a much broader audience than the title suggests. Although Mary Jo Anderson's apparent aim was to better equip Catholics to understand the issues because our religious belief is constantly attacked, the information is a valuable resource for anyone who wishes to gain a more in depth understanding of same sex attraction and how to respond to the problems they face with genuine compassion.

The book is extremely readable and sources information from those therapists at the coal face who actually deal with same sex attractions and sources relevant research. It is not the usual shallow smoke screen that you may be accustomed to.

Mary Jo Anderson set out to ascertain a compassionate response to the issue of same sex attraction and spent 10 years researching the issue prior to undertaking this project. The result is outstandingly informative for the reader.

At the very least it is a must read for any Catholic who believes that they must defend their Catholic belief to secular critics in ways which a secular audience can understand or who wish to deal with people with same sex attractions with genuine compassion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Context Please!
This Book is important because it gives the Catholic point of view of one of the Hottest Hot Button Issues imaginable. Catholicism cannot accept Homosexual Marriage, this book explains why. Two necessary works are "Homosexuality and Hope" by the Catholic Medical Association and "The Truth About homosexuality" by Fr. John Harvey. Many may think it intolerant, however if one takes the time to look into Catholic Moral Theology and JPII's Theology of the Body, this issue makes more sense. So please, be open minded.

1-0 out of 5 stars Outrageous!
Mary Jo Anderson is an extremist in every way. She masks her "research" in religious hysteria in a "Hennie Penny the sky is falling" crusade against gay marriage. She fails to understand the difference between orientation and behavior. One wants to ask Miss Anderson if a heterosexualdoesn't engage in sex are they still heterosexual? Her twistedlogic would assume no, since she bases sexual orientation only on behavior. Further she promotes reparative therapy. The author fails to realize that NO evidence exists that homosexual orientation can be changed. Witness John Paulk the ex-homosexual President of Exodus found (apparently under a spell or a severe relapse in the bathroom of a (notorious den of sin) New York gay bar. Even Spencer's study that stated that SOME homosexuals can be changed has been discredited due to to the fact that his sample population only consisted of homosexuals in the religious fervor of reparitive therapy programs. The preponents of this "conversion" the likes of Nicolosi, Paul Cameron, and NARTH, have been disavowedby the APA, pediatrics, and world health organizations. Even within the last few days the American Psychological Association has issued yet ANOTHER paper speaking of the dangers of reparitive therapy. People can change some BEHAVIOR if they torture themselves via these programs. But orientation in men has been shown to be unchanging time and time again. The author should look to other enemies of the failure of heterosexual marriage (and it is failing in terms of stability) such as communication, the fact that women are no longer limited to agrarian cultures treated as farm hands, computer communication and chat rooms, mass media's sexualization of everything, and a general disregard of commitment.Unfortunately, the world cannot return to the 12th century where Miss Anderson would be comfortable. Then the infidels (by her theory homosexuals and feminists lurking under every bush ) could be simplyburned at the state. I am not a supporter of gay marriage, but as a college professor and psychotherapist (more enemies of Miss Anderson's narrow view) I feel that her rigidity and extremism ruins any real examination of this topic. The reader might look to a more rational pastoral work and see marriage that is nurtured form the inside, and once secure, is not threatened by such red herrings as "gay marriage." What my neighbors do has little effect on my marriage. Yet Miss Anderson and her crowd quiver at the thought of the "slippery slope of sin" waiting to grab all off us. To get a full dose of her absurd ideology read her article "Bishops betraying the Catholic Church" on goggle. Miss Anderson should be standing on a street corner wearing a sandwich board sign tolling a bell for the end of time rather than writing books about something she knows nothing about. the sad thing is that this branch of Catholic extremism knows no logic. A true academic might read "Sexual Conversion therapy: Ethical, Clinical, and Research Perspectives by an M.D. and two Ph.D's. A more thorough piece than this tract. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Such a great subject...
I was very intrigued by the subject of this book.I really wanted to learn about all these men, and thought that this work would supply me with a basic overview of the lives of these great men.I was wrong. Not only is the writing very poor (more on that in a minute), there is very little historical value in this book. Some of the assertions the author makes are nearly impossible to swallow. An example:Anderson describes the meeting of Samuel Johnson and Joshua Reynolds as "one of the cornerstones of English history."I'm sorry, but that's a little much for me.

Anderson seems quick to add any little rumor or hearsay as fact in the biographies. To me, saying something is "looked upon today" or "said to" or "known as" is not very convincing.I'm sure there are mountains of speculation about most of these men, but I don't need to know about them.Instead of saying a man was the "father" of this science or that industry, show me how and why. Then I'll look upon it my own way.

One of the most frustrating things about this book for me was the allusion to so many parts of history the average person is not familiar with. Most, if not all, of these biographies make mention of battles, revolutions, sculptures, people, or events, yet many of these things, important as they may be in the person's life, are not explained. This is very difficult for me--knowing the name of a particular event without knowing anything about it is essentially meaningless.

As I said before, the writing is poor, both grammatically and organizationally. It is always difficult to read a poorly-edited book, and this is no exception. The organization is annoying in that the biographies are ordered in a way that is downright confusing--Anderson frequently jumps from one period of someone's life to the next and back again in the course of a page. This makes it very hard to follow the point.

I gave the book two stars because the subject is great, and Anderson obviously dedicated herself very much to it.For this, she deserves to be commended.I really admire her zeal for the work--I just don't feel it's very informative. If you want an interesting look at the men concerned in this book, I suggest you get a list and look for individual biographies on them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great premise, great content, not so great writing & editing
I loved the concise history of these men who did so much to make the world a better place in the 1700 & 1800's.The author shares pieces of history that you never learn in school and made me want to find the books these men had written, find the paintings they had painted, and walk the lands they had walked.

I felt that the editing of this book must have been a hurried job, and occasionally that the writing style made the details a little unclear. For example, discussion of a man and his parents and grandparents confused me once or twice because the pronoun references were unclear.

Nevertheless, if you're interested in learning about the valient men who lived before the gospel of Jesus Christ was restored, and then asked to receive their own temple blessings as soon as it was possible after their death, you will want to own this book.

I look forward to the sequel on the women.
Shaun Brown

4-0 out of 5 stars Very enlightening into the lives of these wonderful men.
Inspiring, uplifting and very interesting to look into the lives of a few of the world's greatest men. This is a great book that sheds a lot of light into why these great men were granted the ability to pass through the veil to request their work be done. ... Read more
