Chapters: Afro Argentine, Ramón Carrillo, Raul Midón, Antonio Ruiz, Lorenzo Barcala, Fidel Nadal, Cayetano Alberto Silva, Celestino Barcala, Gabino Ezeiza, Fernando Tissone, Oscar Alemán, Enrique Maciel, Tomas Platero Iv, Rosendo Mendizabal, Jimmy Santos. Excerpt:The black population resulting from the slave trade during the centuries of Spanish domination of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata had a major role in Argentine history. Throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it comprised up to fifty per cent of the population in some provinces and had a deep impact on national culture. In the nineteenth century, it declined sharply in number as a result of the wars of Independence (most of the soldiers were black Argentine men), high infant mortality rates, low number of married blacks, the War of the Triple Alliance (most Argentine soldiers in this battle were black as well), cholera epidemics in 1861 and 1864, as well as a yellow fever epidemic in 1871. By the late 1800s, the Afro-Argentine population was consisted mainly of women, and mixed with the European immigrants that arrived. With thousands of immigrants of Europe arriving to Argentine soil, and most black women intermarrying with them, noting that their populations were already low, the Afro-Argentine population faded into oblivion. In 2006 there was a pilot census on this issue in the neighborhoods of Montserrat , in Buenos Aires , and in Santa Rosa de Lima, in Santa Fe , revealing that 5 % of the Argentine population admits having ancestors of African descent and that an additional 20 % believes it could share this ancestry but is not sure. This research supports the claim by the Center for Genetic Studies of the School of Arts and Sciences of the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) that an estimated 4.3 % of the peo... ... Read more

Excerpt: Nicolò dell' Abate, sometimes Niccolò, (1509 or 1512 1571) was an Italian painter and decorator. He was of the Emilian school, and was part of the staff of artists called the School of Fontainebleau that introduced the Italianate Renaissance to France. Niccolò dell'Abbate was born in Modena, the son of a sculptor. He trained in the studio of a local Modenese sculptor, his early influence including Ferrarese painters such as Garofalo and Dosso Dossi. He specialized in long friezes with secular and mythological subjects, including for the Palazzo dei Beccherie (1537); in various rooms of the Rocca at Scandiano owned by the counts Boiardo, notably a courtly ceiling Concert composed of a ring of young musicians seen in perspective, sotto in su (early 1540s), and the Hercules Room in the Rocca dei Meli Lupi at Soragna (c. 154043), and possibly the loggia frescoes removed from Palazzo Casotti at Reggio Emilia. His style was modified by exposure to notably Correggio and Parmigianino, when he moved to Bologna in 1547. In Bologna, most of his painting depicted elaborate landscapes and aristocratic genre scenes of hunting and courtly loves, often paralleled in mythologic narratives. It was during this time that he decorated the Palazzo Poggi, and executed a cycle of frescoes illustrating Orlando Furioso in the ducal palace at Sassuolo, near Modena. In 1552, Nicolò moved to France, where he worked at the royal Château de Fontainebleau as a member of the decorating team under the direction of Francesco Primaticcio. Six prof...http://booksllc.net/?l=fr ... Read more

Chapters: Melchiorre Cafà, Antonio Sciortino, Lorenzo Gafà. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 18. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Melchiorre Cafà (in Italy also known as Caffà, in Malta as Gafa, Gafà, Gaffar or Gafar; 1636-1667) was a sculptor from Malta. Cafà began a promising career in Baroque Rome but this was cut short by his premature death following a work accident. He was born in Vittoriosa, Malta, and given the name Marcello at his baptism on 21 January 1636. He was still referred to as Marcello in 1653 when he worked in Sicily, but soon became known as Melchiorre. After his move to Rome in 1658 or shortly after, he was most frequently referred to as Melchior (or Melchiorre) Maltese. His brother Lorenzo Gafà was one of the leading architects in Malta. Cafà was already an accomplished sculptor when he came to Rome and entered the workshop of Ercole Ferrata, who was not strictly speaking his teacher although he probably helped him refining his technique. Despite soon attracting his own commissions, he stayed in close contact with Ferrata and collaborated with him. In 1660 Cafà signed his first independent contract with Prince Camillo Pamphilj for the relief of the Martyrdom of Saint Eustace in Sant'Agnese in Agone. In 1662 he became a member of the Accademia di San Luca and was even elected its principal in 1667, but declined the honor. Reportedly, he was a close friend of the painter Giovanni Battista Gaulli. Cafà died on the 4 September 1667 after some material collapsed on him in the foundry of Saint Peter's while he was working on the altar decoration for St John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta. Extremely busy throughout his short life, he only managed to finish a few major commissions himself: A number of terracottas are in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Nationa...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3237583 ... Excerpt: Emilio Pucci, Marchese di Barsento (November 20, 1914 29 November 1992) was a Florentine Italian fashion designer and politician. He and his eponymous company are synonymous with geometric prints in a kaleidoscope of colours. Emilio Pucci was born in 1914 of one of Florences oldest noble families, and would live and work in the Pucci Palace in Florence for much of his life. He was a keen sportsman, who swam, skied, fenced, played tennis and raced cars. At the age of 17 he travelled to Lake Placid as part of the Italian team at the 1932 Winter Olympics, but did not compete. After two years at the University of Milan, he studied agriculture at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, where he became a member of the Demosthenian Literary Society. In 1935 he won a skiing scholarship to Reed College in Oregon, received an MA in social science from Reed in 1937, and was awarded his doctorate (laurea) in political science from the University of Florence the same year. In 1938 he joined the Italian Air Force, and served as a bomber pilot during WWII, rising to the rank of captain and decorated for valour by the time he left to pursue his fashion career. At Reed he was known as a staunch defender of the Fascist regime in Italy, and during the war he became a confidant of Mussolini's eldest daughter, Edda Ciano. Pucci played a key role in the plan to save her husband after his part in the downfall of Mussolini, delivering some of Count Ciano's papers to the Gestapo so that they could be bartered for Ciano's life. After Hitler vetoed the scheme, Pucci drove Edda to the Swiss border on 9 January 1944 and ensured her escape. Th...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1197287 ... Read more
