Elizabeth Freeman "Mumbet" (1742-1829) was truly a pioneer. She was one of the first slaves who was granted her emancipation through the court system in Massachusetts.

Mumbet was born into slavery and, as a young girl was sold to the Ashley family in Claverack, New York. She was a slave in the Ashley household until 1780, by which time her daughter Betsy was born. She was struck with a heated shovel during an altercation with Hannah Ashley. The shovel left a scar, which she left exposed as a badge of the atrocities of slavery.

Although illiterate, Mumbet was well versed in legal matters.John Ashley was a lawyer with a degree from Yale and Mumbet was exposed to legal and politicolegal discussions in the Ashleyhousehold.

Through resourcefulness and determination, Mumbet, who had by then changed her name to Elizabeth Freeman secured the legal services of an abolitionist attorney named Theodore Sedgwick. He legally secured her freedom and Elizabeth Freeman then went to work in the Sedgwick home. She and her daughter later moved into a house they bought in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

This is an excellent book and ideal for classrooms. The story of this intelligent, resourceful woman and the way she was able to use the legal system to obtain her freedom is a story that all should know. Mumbet was a freewoman who literally made the sound of freedom ring.Steal Away - Songs of the Underground Railroad and Get on Board! Underground Railroad & Civil Rights Freedom Songs, Vol. 2 are the soundtracks of Mumbet's inspirational story.

5-0 out of 5 stars an important and inspiring piece of history
this is a tremendous story of how one african american slave used the constitution (which was at the time reserved for white, landowning, upper-class men) to emancipate herself from the legal institution of slavery. slavery is a horrific chapter in our history with far too many stories of unbelievable brutality. yet these authors are able to brilliantly capture an uplifting and important historical moment that provides a glimpse of justice triumphing momentarily in what were otherwise very unjust and immoral times. the story of mumbet is one that must be remembered, and the authors have ensured this will happen by making the book accessible and engaging to children and adults of all ages. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Weep no More, My Lady
Mary Higgins Clark Is a Phenomenal writer. A real page turner novel. Can't put her books down till your finished them

3-0 out of 5 stars Satisfying
There is nothing like the blatant atmosphere of rich and powerful celebrities being killed off to make for a good popcon mystery. Fluffy and fun, Ms. Clark takes the sister of a famous actress (a famous actress who just so happens to be a recent murder victim) and makes her an unlikely heroine in murders among the rich.

2-0 out of 5 stars 'Tis Okay, Typical Mary Higgins Clark Script
Weep No More My Lady follows the Clark formula for her stories. The suspense and guessing part is to find out who amongst the people surrounding the principal players is the killer. Clark was okay, but is now beginning to be a "read one, read all" type.

5-0 out of 5 stars KEPT ME IN SUSPENCE
