A companion book for the TV series The Twilight Zone discusses and explores in detail various cases of paranormal experiences, such as demonic possession, mirror dimensions, mind control, ghosts, and human teleportation. Original.Amazon.com Review
The television show Psi Factor is one of the moredramatized programs dealing with paranormal phenomena, but I find thematerial to be more than entertaining. Now, the book by the same nametakes stories from the first 15 episodes and presents them withequally dramatic effect. The sources of these tales are said to bereal occurrences, which give the stories that extra tingle. Though I'dalready seen the shows, I read this book in one sitting, finding thatI couldn't tear myself away. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars PSI Factor - A different kind of Chronicle
At first glance this book looked like it would be hard to follow with the way the chapters are set up.Boy, was I wrong. It flows very well. It is very refreshing to see a book set up so differently and have it be so easy to read. I love being able to read just a chapter at a time.It covers case stories one to a chapter. No chapter is more than eight pages long. It great for reading when you just have 10 minutes here and there. The stories are very well presented. I am ready for volume II =) ... Read more

Product Description

Peter Aykroyd spent his childhood watching his family’s parlor séances through the crack of a basement door. Here, for the first time, Aykroyd tells the strange and delightful story that inspired his son, Dan, to make the mega-hit, Ghostbusters. Part history, part family legend, A History of Ghosts starts in 1848 in upstate New York, where the spiritualist craze first began. Aykroyd introduces the reader to notable mediums while telling the story of the development of spiritualism, interweaving a personal history marked by a fascination with ghosts and spirits with the larger narrative about the role the paranormal has played in our culture. Such legendary figures as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Harry Houdini appear and vanish.
Everyone loves a good ghost story. Successful TV shows such as Medium and Ghost Hunters are proof that our national obsession with ghosts is here to stay. Millions of Americans believe in the paranormal—and even skeptics have heard a bump in the night and suspected it might be something supernatural.

2-0 out of 5 stars A History of Ghosts
I found Ackroyd's history of the spiritualist movement and its seances fairly interesting until I read his endnote attached to a statement about a seance in which Charlotte Bronte was heard, apparently by the author, pronouncing the name of Jane Austen. The endnote reads, "Author Jane Austen, who was Charlotte Bronte's dear friend on earth, seems to have remained a close friend in the next life."In fact, Austen died in 1817 and Bronte was born in 1816, not much time for a friendship to develop. Thereafter, I couldn't help but regard the author's "facts" with a degree of suspicion.

5-0 out of 5 stars History of Spiritualism & Mediums
A great study and reference for research and enjoyment.A lot of work went into this most interesting and enjoyable book.It also explains the history of spiritualism, what mediumship is and the different types of mediums, plus much more.

Product Description
As members of the cast and writing staff of Saturday Night Live, Aykroyd and John Belushi introduced Jake and Elwood Blues — the Blues Brothers — to an enthusiastic public. Elwood's Blues is an entertaining and informative collection of conversations with the legends and rising stars of blues and rock music, drawn from the popular syndicated radio series The House of Blues Radio Hour. Host Dan Aykroyd, in character as Elwood Blues of the legendary Blues Brothers, has interviewed over 900 blues and rock greats since 1993. This book compiles the best of those, including discussions with living legends B.B. King and Buddy Guy, past masters John Lee Hooker and Stevie Ray Vaughan, rising stars Keb' Mo' and Susan Tedeschi, and blues-rooted rock stars such as Robert Plant and Bill Wyman. Elwood's interviews are candid and relaxed. The musical guests discuss their music, life on the road, and a variety of other subjects. Elwood's Blues will appeal to every blues fan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing set of interviews, spanning generations of Blues legends
I'm an avid fan of Akroyd's House of Blues radio show, but rarely catch it.This book takes the best of his in-character interviews, and puts them in your hands.Akroyd, as long-time character Elwood Blues, has a deft touch in finding out where his guests come from, and how that shapes their approach to the blues. The interviews are short, but filled with many moments of insight and history. And the span of blues performers, from major rock acts, to legends of the blues, to up-and-comers - this is a very ecclectic and wide-spanning mix.I can't recommend this book enough.

And, oddly, neither can the guests in my home, because the book has become a very popular bathroom-reader.The interviews are just short enough to appeal to a 'quick read on the throne', and I've had many friends come out talking excitedly about the bit they'd just read.Often they've asked to borrow the book, only to have other guests object to it leaving the bathroom for their own reading...Odd, I admit, but also high praise for the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for your Blues bookshelf
This neat little book has nothing to do with the Blues Brothers movies.
It has almost nothing to do with SNL or Dan Akroyd or the late and much missed John Belushi.

Dan Akroyd and John Belushi did a lot to support and re-popularize Blues music - and for that we are all forever in their debt. There are a lot of Blues fans today who would never have listened seriously to the Blues were it not for the Movies, SNL skits, and 'Briefcase full of Blues.'This book is part of Akroyd's ongoing love of the Blues.

If you've been listening to Blues music for a while, you probably need to start doing some reading. This is a great book, but it is not a 'first book' on the Blues. This book expects you to have some prior knowledge of the Blues music.

Dan Akroyd (in character as Elwood) interviews Bluesmen and musicians who 'take from the Blues.' and he lets them do the talking. His interview questions are those of a Blues Fan, which is neat.I found myself many times thinking 'he needs to ask this . . ' only to find him asking that very question on the next page.

The format is that these are interviews transcribed from radio show interviews. This is the only defect in the book - the interviews are far too short.Akroyd is a knowledgable and skilled interviewer, and I wish he could have done longer interviews. This book really needs to be about 500 pages long. Unfortunately, given the format of the radio show, this was not possible.

If you do not already know a little bit about the Blues, this book is a little bit inaccessible. The author expects that you have some prior knowledge. If you already know a little bit about it, this is a wonderful little book that belongs on the bookshelf of every Blues fan.

I loved the interviews with BB King, Koko Taylor, and John Lee Hooker alone justify buying this book. The Popa Chubby, Susan Tedeschi and Marcia Ball interviews are also really great.

By the way, if you're looking for a 'first Blues book,' I reccommend "Blues for Dummies" and "the Little Blues Book."They are both very easy and will give you a broad (if not deep) knowledge base on Blues music. Both are available on Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Travel the blues mosaic
This is a fantastic primary history source for music afficianados who view music as a cross-generational tapestry, in addition to individual songs.

Dan Aykroyd and Ben Manilla organize this book into three groupings:Blues Legends who synthesized the gengre we now call the blues, Rock Royalty whose music has been inspired by it, and Keepers of the Flame who continue playing the blues closer to it's original style. The authors take a wide view of the blues, and present a tapestry of interviews that show precisely how deep the influence is.Connecting Muddy Waters to ZZ Top is not a huge stretch, but viewing Aerosmith as a 3rd generation recipient of the blues is more interesting.

One strength of the book is that Dan Aykroyd was able to capture many greats such as John Lee Hooker and Bo Diddley before they passed.Perhaps that adds another hint of blue to the book - it would have been great to read similar interiews of more legends now passed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Blues Book For Everyone
I have seen at least a dozen of the artists interviewed in this book live and I have heard the music of almost all of them.I thought hearing them interact with Dan Aykroyd would be fun and really lighthearted. These interviews are so much more interesting, historical and enlightening than I expected.Anyone that would like to hear about some great musicians experiences, anyone that really wants some help getting into Blues music, anyone that wants some real clear and simple Blues history, anyone that wants to motivate themselves or a young person over the age of 12 to continue or clarify their musical interests would love this book.

This book is comfortable reading for anyone. You can read the interviews one at a time or in any order and it won't effect the experience.Aykroyd's knowledge of the Blues is much more significant than I would have expected.I can't remember one question in the whole book that was just for a joke or soley comical reaction.Every musician seemed very comfortable talking to him.Every musician seemed to enjoy this opportunity to tell some real and simple truths about the Blues or their lives. Blues history books can become tedious. In this book once you hear four or five different artists that are not associated with each other describe the same Blues history or musical perspectives you know this book is really something special. Also the Blues discography was a great bonus.

After reading the first four interviews I bought a copy as a gift for a friend.By the time I finished this book I had a list of six people that I want to buy copies for, each for a different reason. This book is now my Blues mini-encyclopedia.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I have just finished reading the book, and while it does offer a lot of good information, I think it tends to be biased and incomplete. Many of the finest blues pioneers were either omitted completely, or given one mention in a sentence about somebody else. No blues history is near complete without in-depth mention of Reverend Gary Davis, Mississippi John Hurt, Pink Anderson, and others. There is not a fence around art. There is more to blues than electric guitars and feedback. And by the way, I would argue with the point that the banjo was played in blues before the guitar- though I am not dissing the banjo at all. It's just that the modern banjo is a comparatively recent instrument. I think if someone wants to learn blues history, go to the very good PBS documentaries first. And listen to everybody!

1-0 out of 5 stars never received the book !!!
I emailed the seller several times & never heard from them. they charged my credit card tho. I'm currently trying to get my money back, filed a complaint with amazon. I never got the book !

4-0 out of 5 stars All in all a very good book and CD
This book is pretty much exactly what a for dummies book should be. It's an enjoyable light read about the blues. The coverage is extensive and written in an entertaining fashion. The knowledge of the authors is indisputable. I only have a couple of complaints:
This book was written in 1998 and not updated since so the contemporary blues section is missing some obvious important new comers (Eric Bibb for example) and online resources are hopelessly out of date ([...]).

I expected the Playing the Blues section to have a little bit of theory and perhaps some tips for each instrument but its about putting together a band that could play the blues. Given the authors experience I don't doubt the value of this information but I just wasn't expecting that information and question what percentage of readers need that versus some getting started tips on playing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good INTRO book
If you already know the difference between Delta, Chicago, and Piedmont blues and know more than just Robert-Johnson-Muddy-BB-Sonny Boy-Buddy-John Lee-whoever, you don't need this book.If you really don't know just how diverse the blues really is, how long a history it has, or how influential it has been, this book is a reasonable starting point. You'll get oriented to the major sub-genres, artists, instrumentation, music forms, and milestones. The CD provides a very brief audio guide by giving you samples of various types of blues, using well-known examples.

There's much left out and much that's simplified, but the major points are made, and that's the intent of the book.It succeeds very well.

Once you've digested this, I can recommend "Nothing But the Blues" as a next book: Nothing But the Blues : The Music and the Musicians, which will give you a deeper dive across the history of the blues.

5-0 out of 5 stars For Blues Lovers And Newbies Alike
For those seeking to learn more about the blues it's hard to imagine a better primer. This book covers a wide range of artists from Mamie Smith's release of "Crazy Blues" in 1920 through the country blues and Chicago blues up until the blues of today, including substantial coverage of blues influenced rock musicians like Eric Clapton and Bonnie Raitt.

The first 2/3's of the book offers information on the artists in roughly chronological order. While the final 1/3 covers the best CDs, clubs, internet sites and other useful info. Written with passion and style by blues guitarist Lonnie Brooks, this book is an outstanding purchase for anyone who loves the blues or wants to know more about this great form of American music. ... Product Description
Ghostbusters (titled on-screen as Ghost Busters) is a 1984 science-fiction comedy film written by co-stars Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis about three eccentric New York City parapsychologists-turned-ghost exterminators. The film was released in the United States on June 8, 1984 and like several films of the era, teamed Aykroyd and/or Ramis with headliner Bill Murray. It was produced and directed by Ivan Reitman, who also directed Stripes, and stars Murray, Aykroyd, Ramis, Rick Moranis, Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts, and Ernie Hudson. With inflation adjustments, the film's original release grossed over $500 million US dollars counting sales in just the U.S., making it domestically one of the highest-grossing films of 1984 and also domestically the 31st highest-grossing film. It was followed by a sequel, Ghostbusters II (1989), and two animated television series, The Real Ghostbusters (later renamed Slimer! And the Real Ghostbusters) and Extreme Ghostbusters. Ramis, who co-wrote the first two films, has confirmed that a script for a potential third film ? a spin-off sequel with the original cast appearing only as minor characters ? is being developed by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, the writing team best known for their work on Curb Your Enthusiasm and the American version of The Office. Producer Judd Apatow (a producer of the Ramis-directed Year One) is also slated to be involved. ... Read more
