4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable!
I just re-read this book again, I love Madeline Baker's books. I read this book along time ago when it first came out. After reading other reviews about the book, I decided to re-read it and I did. I liked Caleb alot, I enjoyed the book in every way, except Callie, she was a little childish. Granted her mother was a whore, but that don't mean that you will be just like her. But anyway, the book was pretty good. I am still keeping the book so that in 5 years I can read it again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cheyenne Surrender
This is a story about the half-breed Caleb Stryker and Callie, who was the daughter of Caleb's father's mistress. When the story starts out Callie comes to Caleb's house and asks for the money his father, Duncan, promised her mother before he died. Caleb refuses and thinks she's no better then a street tart. She slaps him, and the story goes on from there. Caleb finds out that the ranch he loves was left to Callie and her mother, who'd died months ago. He decides to marry Callie so that the ranch will become his. Only he asks her to marry him out of love, even tells her he loves her. When she finds out the ranch is hers, she's mad, and breaks off the engagement, but not before making love with Caleb one time. Even after that one time she freaks out and runs away, even though Caleb tried to convince her they were going to be married anyway. This sets off a series of events that cause many consequences.

I didn't like Callie at all. I mean, I know this book is set in the 1800s, and that sex before marriage was considered a sin, but she was too worried about becoming like her mother. Over and over in the book she kicks, screams, slaps, etc at Caleb when he kisses her, and tells him over and over that she doesn't want to end up like her mother. It was like a litany. She had to say it every other page. It drove me nuts. I had to skim over several pages because she was being a brat. And even after she found out he still loved her, she never trusted him until the last thirty pages or so when she finally has the baby. Although part of that distrust was the result of Angela, Caleb's childhood friend, who also becomes pregnant, and tells Callie it's Caleb's!

This was a book that only deserves 4 stars because it is a book with another stupid heroine. And I'm only being so generous because I loved Caleb. He was a VERY sexy hero.

4-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENTLY WRITTEN - NEAT CHARATERS
As always M. Baker gives us an excellently written tale.
Carly Kirkwood keeps going on about being a city gal, needing the bright lights and shopping malls and resturants to keep her happy.

Zane Roan Eagle is a man who has plans for a home ranch and room for his daughter [which of course he does not tell Carly about].
His ex gives us a twitch as to what her plans are for Zane and Katy.Trouble??maybe?

Brenda, being Carly's best friend, wants to see her happy and thinks Zane is the one for her buddy.
Carly had finally broken down and taken a vacation in Texas with Brenda and her family. And then she "stumbled" onto Zane and began to take riding lessons.

The magnatism that developed between the two told Zane that Carly was trouble. She could make him forget his resolve to not marry again.
The developing romance was an easy read.

Hey if we can't have a picture of the Lakota man, at least give us a good drawing.I missed out on not learning more about the Lakota customs.
Where are these 6 foot something Native Americans? The closest I can imagin is Jay Silverheel of Tonto fame.Ah well, I can dream.

5-0 out of 5 stars A FIVE MINUS JUST BECAUSE IT WAS TOO SHORT
I always want a time frame on the characters to estimate their maturity.
Well Cindy Wagner is a rich, spoiled little daddy's girl and is now 21 and walking down the isle and getting cold feet. She doesn't really love Paul and she keeps remembering her mother telling her that Paul would not make her happy. He is too work orientated.

Native American Ethan Stormwalker, is 24 years old, and loves his way of life.It will not allow many luxeries but is sufficient for him.He is following his ancestor's teachings and beliefs. He was born and raised on the Rez.

When the two met, Cindy was 16 and Ethan was 19.I can see how Cindy had a lot of growing up to do.Now Ethan is portrayed as very much the masculine male. And his dancing just adds to his mystique.
Add his wolf dog and the buckskin stallion and we see the Alpha male who is her hero.

He works on his aunt, Dorothea's Dude Ranch, where he has acquired quite a female gathering, including a 16 year old customer, Linda and a waitress, Millie who would willingly offer Ethan most anything.

Paul's flaws became more evident when he came to the ranch to take Cindy home.Man, he just won't listen when she tells him they were no longer an item.

Then it seemed that history was repeating itself when he went off to a Pow Wow to dance and comes back to find Cindy gone.Five years ago it was the same thing [almost].

There is so much more to the story - You will love finding out how Cindy and Ethan [he has to rescue her] resolve their bitterness and fall in love all over again.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -- Definitely a keeper [just too short]

5-0 out of 5 stars Madeline Baker's first series romance is awesome!

Cindy Wagner walks down the aisle on her father's arm to wed a man she does not truly love. Then she listens to her heart and flees the church before taking her vows. During her escape in the limo she sees a billboard advertising the Elk Valley Dude Ranch and instantly starts to think about the man she had loved in the past. The driver takes her there and as she exits the limo she does not see the silent man but he sees her, and he remembers.

Ethan Stormwalker is a professional competitive pow wow dancer, and he works on his aunt's dude ranch. Five years ago he had been desparately in love with Cindy but what future could he have had with a beautiful and privileged young girl. Cindy had adored him as much but circumstances had succeeded in tearing them apart. But now, five years later, will their love survive?

I have read many Native American books but this is one of the best to date. DUDE RANCH BRIDE is creatively written with beautiful Native American tales woven into the story, bringing this wonderful culture to life for me. The hero, Ethan Stormwalker, is proud and strong, and his spirit shines through as his heart battles his pride, to win the love of the one woman that the Great One has chosen for him. DUDE RANCH BRIDE is endearingly fantastic!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent compilation, especially if you like Elvis
"Paradise" is an eminently readable compilation of novellas, with appealing characters and good writing. While none of the stories are outstanding or especially memorable, all are good enjoyable reads.

"Jessie's Girl" by Madeline Baker is a sweet story, portraying a pair of lovers who are charming but somewhat shallow.Kathy, especially, seems almost too good and naive to be real. The premise, involving Jessie as a vampiric Elvis, is a bit unusual, but also feels a bit "off."Of the four, this struck me as the weakest contribution.

I really enjoy Nina Bangs' writing, and "Hunka" is no exception. The characters are appealing and well-developed, and the story brims with good humor and charm.

I really liked the premise of Ann Lawrence's "Heaven-Sent."The characters are charming, and the romance and mystery are very sound. The "heavenly" slant also made this story a little out of the ordinary.

Nance's "Best-Laid Plans" was another nice little gem. While it's not spectacular in any way, decent writing and well-developed characters make this a solid contribution.

All in all, this is a great summer read, especially for the Elvis fan!

4-0 out of 5 stars HITTING ALL THE RIGHT KEYS
PARADISE constitutes 4 stories revolving Elvis, the king of Rock and the romances that soared with him around as the matchmaker. The first story by Madeline Baker may proved too far-fetch and mythical - with Jessie, amanifestation of Elvis in the form of a vampire, learning love can lastlonger than eternity and youth. The second by Nina Bangs hit all the rightkeys, with a calculative business lady falling in love with a theme parkoperator Dylan. The others by Kathleen Nance and Ann Lawrence were buoyant, focusing more on inner feelings between two lonely characters jumping at achance in love.

The stories are fleeting, transient like heavensteps toPARADISE - they are typical romances spiced up by wicked chemistry androusing narrative. Not memorable nor poignant, but simply a good readtaking you to heavenly dreams.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable summer read!
I wasn't taken with the first story. I like vampire romances but not with a former real person in the role.

I loved the other three tales by new authors, Bangs, Lawrence, and Nance. Wonderful stories with Elvis as a sidecharacter or spirtual influence.Lawrence and Nances were so well writtenand complex, I soon forgot they were novella's.I loved Lawrence's"Virtual Heaven", Bangs' "An Original Sin", and Nance's"More Than Magic" recent single titles as well. Leisure LoveSpell has a wonderful stable of new authors, I hope we'll be hearing morefrom them soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful demonstration of what love is...
I personally love this book. Yeah, all the individual stories were way too short, but what can you expect from a book that is written by so many authors? In a way, i like short stories because it makes you appreciate the characters that much more.

All stories were based around a book that was passed down from generation to generation. This book talked about how love was reached through struggle, risks, and determination.

The characters in each of the stories had different personalities yet they all had something in common....love.

There has to be at least one story in this book that you can relate to or that you feel can really happen outside of a book. I think the authors did a fabulous job in keeping their stories based around a book, and they each displayed love in a different way through different obstacles.

I really recommend it as it gives you an insight into a lot of different authors and how they write and what characters they use. My personal favorite was the last one by Madeline Baker.

3-0 out of 5 stars All way too short - but Balogh, Edwards and Neri managed to make it work!
From the back cover:

Imagine a book--a love story--so hauntingly romantic, so emotionally powerful that it changes the lives of all who read it. Eleven of the greatest romance writers in the world have envisioned such a tale and brought it to life, creating a heartfelt personal legacy: a volume dedicated to the cause of literacy in the United States.

Between these covers are noble knights and dashing swashbucklers, penniless waifs and beautiful belles--all those whose destinies have been touched by Love's Legacy. All profits will be donated to The Literacy Partners!

And my review:

The problem with this book is that all of the stories are just way too short. There are eleven novellas in a book that is 441 pages long. Do the math and you end up with about 30 - 40 pages per story (I counted, and they all fell within that range).

One thing that really disappointed me is that the love story that affects everyone who reads it is not here. It's something that is only alluded to in each novella, but doesn't really exist. There is no actual story of Damon and Angeline, it's only referred to. I would have really liked this book to start out with the book that all the other stories in it refer to and are affected by, instead of just leaving it up to my imagination. But maybe that's just me...

Almost all of the stories dealt with someone who could not read, but wanted to learn, in keeping with the cause of literacy that this book was published to help promote.

Some of the stories just made me snort in disbelief. Seriously. Out loud. (Glad I was at home at the time!) In Virginia Henley's, she uses the most ridiculous description during the love scene. Madeline Baker makes a huge mistake in hers. In it, the power goes out, so the heroine has to light candles, yet somehow her stove works so that she can make hot chocolate. Hmm, I've never been in a selective power outage before (and no, it wasn't a wood or gas stove!)

That being said, some of this book was enjoyable, but there was pretty much no room for anything besides plot, and this was not a sampling of anyone's best work. However, Mary Balogh's Regency, Cassie Edward's Native American, and Penelopi Neri's Dickens' style romances were all very good. I kept the book for those three stories. And I did like the idea of a story so touching that it changed the life of anyone who read it.

Titles in this book (in the order they appear):
Fairy Tale by Heather Graham
Letter of Love by Virginia Henley
The Betrothal Ball by Mary Balogh
Golden Treasures by Catherine Hart
Loving Charity by Elaine Barbieri
Savage Fantasy by Cassie Edwards
Hidden Treasures by Penelope Neri
Winds of Change by Janelle Taylor
Annabelle's Legacy by Diana Palmer
Kindred Hearts by Lori Copeland
To Love Again by Madeline Baker

4-0 out of 5 stars A Timeless Story

Customer Reviews (3)

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I love Christmas romances, and try to read as many as I can during the season. This book was a major disappointment to me. The first story didn't even mention Christmas until literally the last few pages. A majority of the story took place in the summer/early fall! The second story was much better, but by that point I was kind tired of waiting for the anthology to get good. So I moved on to something else. I don't think I will give it another try. There was just nothing in the story or plot to "grab" me or make me interested in what would happen next.

3-0 out of 5 stars One story worth a re-read, the rest are just okay
From the back cover:

1) Loving Sarah by Madeline Baker: A white woman learns the true meaning of Christmas from the Apache brave who has opened her heart to love.

2) A Christmas Angel by Robin Lee Hatcher: A motherless little girl's wish for a Christmas angel comes true with the arrival of a beautiful stranger at her father's Idaho farm.

3) The Homecoming by Norah Hess: An innocent bride finds special joy in the Christmas homecoming of a husband who married her on the rebound, then marched away from their Kentucky homestead to fight for his country's independence.

4) The Greatest Gift of All by Connie Mason: A lonely young Colorado widow rediscovers the magic of love when her two children befriend a traveler who bears an uncanny resemblance to St. Nicholas.

And my review:

Madeline Baker's story was just okay. I've read a few of her works, and I've always felt the same thing. Fairly entertaining while you read them, but the characters just don't stay with you after you turn that final page. Three stars.

Robin Lee Hatcher's story was my favorite in the book, and one I've re-read a couple of times. Very sweet and innocent, with lovable characters, I found this story quite touching. There wasn't an element of this story that a didn't like. And Phoebe, the little girl, was a great character, not just a flat plot device, which I really liked. This story was the reason I kept this book. Five stars.

Norah Hess's story was certainly not what I expected it would be. From reading the back cover blurb, I thought it would be a story of reunited love, but it was not so, which made it an interesting read. The thing was, I found the heroine to be more than a little stupid, which really detracted from my enjoyment of the story. I think the reader is supposed to sympathize with her, but I had no sympathy for someone who made their own mess. Not only that, but she knew it was a stupid mistake while she was doing it, yet she barrelled ahead and did it anyway. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I wanted her to have more self-respect, and though she did have some in the end, it just didn't save the book for me. Also, I hated the hero's "I slept with her, but didn't court her, so it shouldn't bother you because it didn't mean anything" attitude. I am SO sick of the virgin woman with the slut man. One star.

Connie Mason's story was one that I had to force myself to finish. I could not like the heroine. She was just so bitter and mean to her children. She professed over and over to love her kids, but then she was always getting angry and yelling at them for just being children. Loving your kids means more than just taking care of their physical needs. Just because you're bitter doesn't mean your children can't enjoy a little magic. One star.

All together, a three star book. I would recommend trying to find this at a thrift or used-book store, as it's not worth buying it brand new, but Robin Lee Hatcher's story does make it worth owning.

THE BLACK HILLS, 1876

It was a land where a man could ride for days without seeing anything but fragrant pines, an occasional deer, or a lone eagle soaring in the limitless blue sky -- a land where the Indian still roamed wild and free -- a land that drew together two lovers to embrace a passionate destiny neither could have foreseen.

THE CHEYENNE

Accustomed to the ways of the white man, he returned to his tribe in search of a vision quest, to share with his people the glory and heartache of the last golden days before the Battle of the Little Big Horn, and to find the beautiful woman who haunted his dreams.

ELAYNA

Sheltered and innocent, she shared every civilized woman's fear of the Indian, until she was kidnapped by the darkly handsome Cheyenne. Slowly, her disdain changed to desire beneath his hard, bronzed body, until she would make any sacrifice to keep him by her side forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Apache's Flame
Alisha Faraday was a young girl when she fell in love with Mitch Garrett. Mitch was Apache, poor and had a rough home life. Alisha was the preacher's daughter and had everything she could ever want, except she had to hide her friendship with Mitch. Once he was a teen, Mitch left town to make something of himself, but he swore he'd come back for Alisha. Alisha waited for Mitch for a while, but as time went by and he never contacted her, she reluctantly moved on. When Mitch's father dies sending him back to town, he and Alisha feel that same pull. But Alisha is engaged and Mitch is bitter. Through heartbreak and loss and revealed secrets and lies, will Mitch and Alisha finally have a shot at future together?

Apache Flame is a tender love story filled with angst and laced with excitement. Mitch and Alisha's story is very sweet. They practically grew up together and their lives revolved around each other, even when they were apart. The tales Mitch tells about the Apache people are interesting and endearing, as is his real Apache family. Mitch and Alisha face one obstacle after another in Apache Flame, but in the end they prove that true love conquers all!

Book Title: Apache Flame

Author: Madeline Baker
Genre: Historical

Main Characters:

Alisha Faraday and Mitchy Garrett

Overall Quality
First, let me explain that I purposely seek out little known historical romance authors because I prefer unique story plots. I abhor the standard published romance drivel forced on us by certain publishers who think we women are a bunch of low iq idiots!! I hate the standard boy girl - love hate plots these publishers throw at us. These reviews reflect my tastes and my tastes in romance reading only. I do not claim to be the expert for everyone like our romance publishers think they are.

Story Plot:
Growing up together the boy from the wrong side of parentage is befriended and falls in love with the preacher's daughter. Secretly their friendship grows to love. Both sets of parents lie to the children. These lies complicate their innocent lives until fate unites them as adults. The truth is revealed and together they fight the deceit to bring their love and family together.

I especially liked:
The Native American peoples in this story were not treated as hollywood plastic stereotypes. This author treated them as they truly were, loving and devoted to family.

I didn't like
the Comanche part, but it was necessary for action in the story.

When I finished the book I wanted to:
Find more of her books.

This book made me feel:
Interested and the way she wrote created a movie in my mind.

I recommend this book because:
The plot is unique.Baker has a good hook and an interesting story.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just Great
This book was really worth the 2 hours I spent reading it. It was really clever of Baker to give us the flashbacks into Alisha and Mitch's past. It really helped you to understand how they fell in love. The real plot of this story in my opinion was to undercover all the lies that tore them appart. The most hurtful lies were the ones from their fathers. First telling Mitch that his mother was dead. Then Alisha's father telling her that the baby she was having by Mitch was stillborn. Man what fathers would do to keep their children under lock and key. Besides the gloomy parts this book will give you a good laugh. I had to keep covering my mouth to keep me from laughing out loud. All in all this is a great book hope you enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
This book was completely satisfactory.i enjoyed its content.I loved Baker's creativity. This was my first book by Baker, and it will certainly not be the last. Mitchy sounds like Prince Charming to my imagination, andi certainly love to dream.Keep 'em coming Baker!

3-0 out of 5 stars not particularly authentic!
The storyline was okay but the 20th century dialog didn't fit with the mid-1800's story. ... Read more
