Product Description

“I have been through some of the worst of contentious divorce litigation,” Alec Baldwin declares in A Promise to Ourselves. Using a very personal approach, he offers practical guidance to help others avoid the anguish he has endured.

An Academy and Tony Award nominee and a 2007 recipient of Golden Globe, SAG, and Television Critics Association Awards for best actor in a comedy, Alec Baldwin is one of the best-known, most successful actors in the world. His relationship with Kim Basinger, the Academy Award–winning actress, lasted nearly a decade. They have a daughter named Ireland, and for a time, theirs seemed to be the model of a successful Hollywood marriage. But in 2000 they separated and in 2002 divorced. Their split---specifically the custody battle surrounding Ireland---would be the subject of media attention for years to come.

In his own life and others’, Baldwin has seen the heavy toll that divorce can take---psychologically, emotionally, and financially. He has been extensively involved in divorce litigation, and he has witnessed the way that noncustodial parents, especially fathers, are often forced to abandon hopes of equitable rights when it comes to their children. He makes a powerful case for reexamining and changing the way divorce and child custody is decided in this country and levels a scathing attack at what he calls the “family law industry.”

When it comes to his experiences with judges, court-appointed therapists, and lawyers, Baldwin pulls no punches. He casts a light on his own divorce and the way the current family law system affected him, his ex-wife, and his daughter, as well as many other families. This is an important, informative, and deeply felt book on a contentious subject that offers hope of finding a better way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anyone in a relationship thinking about having children should read this book
Mr. Baldwin's book is a must read for anyone about to have children or who has children and is thinking about getting divorced. It is a shame that in this society women use their children like chess pieces in what they feel is the game of divorce. I went through a divorce, at NO time did I use my children as pawns against their father. I did not clean out the financial clock of my ex- husband nor did I speak ill about my children's father. I never discussed my divorce with my children until they themselves asked - one was almost 12 and the other was 21 when the subject came up and only then did I discussed the facts. My ex never abused my children nor did I think at anytime about making false allegations against him that he did. I just wanted to move on with my life and make the best life I could. Divorce itself is not really a tragedy what is tragic is that the court system allows women to accuse their ex's of child abuse, spousal abuse etc after the fact. The history of a marriage is never brought in when these charges are being brought. The courts do not recognize that if a women feels scorned that is the reason she is now choosing to falsely accuse an ex of a crime. Women are not held in contempt when they keep a good loving child support paying father away from their children. I watched for the last year or more as a women falsely accused her ex , ruined a career and continues to this day to make her ex's life and the life of her children a living hell. She uses her children in every which one one could imagine to "get her ex back for the life that she feels he ruined". She forgets that at one time she loved this man , married him and then had children with him. After many court battles, more money than one would believe spent wastefully on a court system that allows her to continue her tirades the battle I feel will continue until the children are adults. Thankfully one person saw the truth he in turned helped to uncover alot of the BS and finally the courts saw they truth. However when attorney's are allowed to "judge shop" one has to then start the process over again. Women need to realize that a man nor a marriage make you and that only you and you alone can allow divorce to break you. Women worked hard for equal rights however everytime a women battles in court and uses her children as pawns in a divorce proceeding, or tries to clean out the financial clock of their ex-husband they are sending all women back to the days of no equality. If your marriage is not working, get a job make sure that your children are taken care of financially and get a reasonable amount of child support and walk the hell away with your head held high and do not use your children like pawns in what is a divorce between two grown adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Read
Item arrived on time and was in excellent condition. It was a pretty interesting read with tips on how to avoid the problems that Alec Baldwin went through. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Baldwin hits homerun
I watched Alec Baldwin on The View "stand up for himself" after his ex-wife "leaked" a voice message to TMZ that became fodder in her campaign to control her daughter's thinking by mishcaracterizing Alec's behavior and temperment. It was then that I was encouraged by his "lionheartedness" in dealing with the toxicity of Family Law practices in America.I am a victim of that system as surely as he was in the Los Angeles venue. His narrative is a poignant and brave "raging against the darkness" of the Family Law system that plagues families.I have great respect for his pain and efforts to maintain a realtionship with his daughter.A Promise to Ourselves is worth reading because "Parental Alienation Syndrome" is real and either parent that engages in this behavior is "legally" abusing their children. That behavior needs to be stopped in its tracks.Children are born to both parents and they need both of them for healthy development, even though divorce changes living arrangements.

5-0 out of 5 stars My experience mirrors Alec Baldwin's divorce and alienation
As a father of 4 daughters aged 9-18 - I divorced after 20 years of marriage - I completely identify with this book.

My ex-wife battled me much like Kim did to Alec.Unlike Alec however, the court gave me 50 percent joint legal and physical custody, so I kept my kids every other week.I could see the many attempts at parental alienation by my ex-wife during her weeks, but because she only had the kids for 7 days at a time, she could not manipulate them too badly before they came back to me and confirmed their own judgements of me.If my ex had in fact received primary custody, she would have had 90% of the time to manipulate the kids.

This is my big takeaway from the book - if you are a man and get divorced, don't concede custody unless you want to.The more time your kids spend with your ex, the more they naturally will be influenced by her, and the less time by you. This of course is not a problem if you have an amicable divorce and an ex for whom the children come first. But if you have an ex like mine - who believed that the kids were hers and hers alone, always attempting to minimize my role as a parent - then you'll have the kind of trouble and manipulation that my kids and I have endured.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sad Tale of Family Court
The book is a sad look into the socalled family court system. I really feel for the author, not as a celeb but as a human being that has been treated as a criminal, without having done anything wrong. He's clearly a loving father and despite his temper, he does so much, such as flying across country to have lunch with his kid. many times she wasn't there. He's gone through great expense and wasted so much time just to get a few crumbs with his daughter. I really am pleased he's succeeding so much these days, after the hellish years he's spent almost ruining his career in order to comply with court orders and rulings. It's all seemingly one sided with Baldwin jumping through endless hoops, all while his ex just makes up nonsense as she goes along, including the sleazy, underhanded "abuse" charges, which were dismissed but it was just another way to keep him from his daughter for a long period of time while he proved he was innocent. I realize some people will never get over the infamous voice mail episode, but the book explains it and more and he has my sympathies.
I got this book for a friend that went through a similar situation with 4 kids, except his ex is now remarried, with another kid, and he's still paying the same amounts despite her double income, and lives with his mother and owns nothing.
The system has ruined so many men, and lots of women, too. Baldwin is right, it's meant to line the pockets of lawyers and shrinks, and does nothing to preserve families. Good, insightful, and actually quite fair minded book about family court. Baldwin doesn't insult or judge the morally reprehensible ex, he just tells how he felt personally about her actions. ... Product Description
Nobody is better at capturing the ups and downs of queer life than Michael Thomas Ford, author of the popular "My Queer Life" syndicated column. This original collection takes on everything from show tunes and Martha Stewart to the perils of dating and the son of God himself, all some of the things that make life very queer indeed.Amazon.com Review
The short humorous essay is a form that few writers can master. Sure, pithy and funny are easy enough (if you are, in fact, pithy and funny), butthe failings of most humorous essays come from a lack of seriousness. Humor is most effective when the writing articulates a clear, thoughtful point of view. The essays inMichael Thomas Ford's Alec Baldwin Doesn't Love Me & Other Trials from MyQueer Life are perfect models of the form. Ford, who writes a syndicatedcolumn titled "My Queer Life," can muse on anything from Martha Stewart'smanias to his devotion to Alec Baldwin's chest, from the elusive gay gene toright-wing Fundamentalist Christianity (in which he was raised), and he manages tomake us laugh and sometimes even cry. His ironic view of a world that keepsthreatening to be wonderful but never quite succeeds dovetails perfectlywith his desire for world peace, freedom for gay people, and better sex.Witty, funny, and surprisingly moving, Michael Thomas Ford explains life to usand it actually begins to make sense. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully put together book, funny and a great read!
Michael Thomas Ford collects a series of columns published on his newspaper and later syndicated under the title of My Queer Life.Think of David Sedaris; although, personally, I find Mr. Ford funnier.

What can you expect from a kid who packs his toys for the Second Coming, insults the woman whose life inspired The Sound of Music, and fears the host of Romper Room is out to get him?

In this book, you will experience a wild ride through a life filled with one surprise after another--and each one funnier than the previous one.Ford takes on everything from the horrors of shopping, the search for a gay gene, Martha Stewart addiction, and the right to marry Alec Baldwin.

A wonderfully put together book, funny and a great read!

4-0 out of 5 stars Alec Baldwin and His Hairy Chest...are Something to Write About!
This title was one heck of a fun read! Especially enjoyed the chapter "Dyke The Halls" and "Singing A Different Tune". This book was enjoyable as it served as a reminder of some of the same situations that happened to me in my younger queer life. The two chapters I have cited were very funny and caused me to often laugh aloud. The other chapters were fun as well. Ford is an excellent writer and I don't think you can miss with any of his work. I have read several of MTF's novels "Last Summer", and "Looking For It" among them. This title was very different than the above mentioned novels but every bit as enjoyable. I highly recommend anything written by this talented author. You can't miss with him. Don't miss this one! It's a fast read (I read the entire novel on a flight from California to Florida). Thanks Mr. Ford, I look forward to your future endeavors.

5-0 out of 5 stars A little insight in an insecure world...
I have all of Michael Thomas Ford's books (just ordered the newest collection today!), and I'd have to say that him and I are pretty much alike. I'm glad that there are people out there that, like me, just don't get it. I thought I was the only one who worries about things such as the dog sleeping on the bed or my boyfriend not calling enough. It's nice to know there are some people out there who are neurotic as I am...

5-0 out of 5 stars Michael Thomas Ford is Hilarious!
I recommend all of his books (That's Mr. Faggot to you etc) - they are very funny, well written and really amusing. I am constantly disappointed by gay humorous books (like Bob smith's lame book) but Mr. Ford never disappoints.

Since the chapters are so short it is great for reading on the train or before bed.

I can't wait for his next one.

5-0 out of 5 stars How can Alec not love this book?
Michael Thomas Ford finds humor everywhere, but especially in his sexual orientation, and how different kinds of people respond to it. I laughed constantly while reading his observations on life. Alec Baldwin might not love the author, but how could he not love this book?

3-0 out of 5 stars Hamp this
//In the Hamptons Too// is the sequel to //In the Hamptons// by Dan Rattiner.Dan's family moved from New Jersey to the Hamptons, desolate oceanfront property, when he was sixteen.Rattiner's father, the new owner of the first drug store in the Hamptons, employed his son.

Richard T. Gilmartin, the town's supervisor, shared the history of the Hamptons with Dan.Gilmartin left the Hamptons due to his son's tragic death, but Rattiner never forget him. As a result, Rattiner, with permission from his dad, started the town's first newspaper and filled it with the stories that Gilmartin shared with him.He witnessed the town's transformation from a potato farm to a summer resort of oceanfront mansions owned and visited by the rich and the famous.

The Hamptons, according the media, is a place where out-of-control, rich kids experienced drunken bouts and tore up the town, which is far from the truth. Rattiner authored //In the Hamptons// and //In the Hamptons Too//to shed light on the town's natives and its history. According to Alec Baldwin who wrote the forward, Dan Rattiner tells the story like no other.
