5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for ball-obsessed toddlers!
While this book may be geared for older kids, I got it for my son when he was about 18 months. It is by far his favorite book ever!Granted, he has an obsession with balls in general, but through this book and its great illustrations and photos, I was able to teach him the names of different balls, how to play different sports, the different equipment used, and a host of other information. He is now 2 years old and the book is so dog eared, I'll have to buy him another copy.I highly recommend it for parents who have children who love balls!

5-0 out of 5 stars A list of recommended websites for further reading rounds out this fascinating trivia anthology
Balls! is more than a picturbook - it is a 72-page compendium of amazing facts about balls used to play all types of popular sports, from handball to soccer balls to tennis balls, golf balls, footballs and much more. Colorful photographs and sketches on every page illustrate this collection crammed full of history, uses, designs, quotes, statistics, and much more. Though designed for inquisitive young adult minds, Balls! is fun (and educational!) for readers of all ages. A list of recommended websites for further reading rounds out this fascinating trivia anthology recommended for school and public library collections as well as the libraries of budding sports fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
Baseballs, basketballs soccer balls, footballs, tennis balls, hand balls, golf balls, volley balls ping pong (er..table tennis) balls and odd balls are all described, dissected, and detailed. Do you know how footballs are made? Do you want to understand the dynamics of a golf ball?

This book is terrific. It is well written with an easy to read and well designed layout.

Many of the chapters have a "Ball of Fame" section. "Wilson" from the movie Cast Away is featured in the volleyball section.
Did you know there are three types of tennis balls that may be used in a tennis match?

The book invites browsing and the large clear photos invite the reader into the book.
This is a nonfiction gotta-have-it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Not-So-Secret Life of 8 Favorite Sport Balls
A great mix of facts and fun. While offering a comprehensive and well researched overview of the actual balls used in soccer, basketball, volleyball, handball, tennis, table tennis, football, and golf, Rosen manages to do two other crucial things: he choses just those facts that kids of all ages (and all interest levels) would find fascinating, AND he delivers the material in a lively, funny, quirky manner. The book includes equal parts archival photos and information diagrams (such as the composition of each ball) and witty illustrations by a great illustrator, John Margeson. (You can see 5 of his images that I've shared on this site.)
Overall, it's a book not only for kids--or parents--who are nuts about sports, but alsofor kids who just love "cool" information. I can't think of another book on sports that can include pangolins, puffball mushrooms, Ping Pong, astronaunt John Glenn, the New Year's Eve ball in Times Square...and so many other "oddball" and entertaining facts. A great reference book, but also the sort of book kids would be eager to share with friends. I'd say for ages 8 to 14, easily. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More helpful than my career advisor!!!
Finally!A book that gives the real truth about how to thrive careerwise after college.Where most books fall short, this one keeps going, offering loads of practical advice.Brutally honest about the reality of the corporate world, this book lays it out in fun to read, plain English.I don't know why my college career office doesn't give this book out!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the one, finally.
For the record, this is my very first Amazon review because I finally found a book that is worthy of a 5 star review. After reading several post-college graduate books, @ the Entry Level finally stops beating around the bush and tells you how it really is and how to succeed after college in the jungle known as 'the real world.' Anyone in my position (fresh out of college, has a job, has no idea how the real world works) should pick up this book immediately. Michael Ball relates to our position and generation very accurately and convincingly as well. Teaches you the politics of business and how to sell yourself for future promotions and growth. Much more than a post-college book, I recommend it for anyone trying to get a competitive edge and understanding for themselves in the workplace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
Anyone who's in (or just about to enter) Corporate America and hasn't read this book is at a serious disadvantage! Not only does it show you how to work more effectively with managers and seniors, but it even talks about promotions and career paths, early decision-making, work - life balance, and how to build a personal "brand."

Plus it really gets you to think about the deeper meaning of your career: where it's all leading, how money fits into the equation, and what you're going to want to look back on your life and see. The author obviously cares about his readers, and that makes it even more worthwhile. Truly an informative, provoking (and controversial) book!

3-0 out of 5 stars nothing new for people who figured out their calling
I was actually a bit disappointed in this book because I expected more advice on how to deal with the survival and achieve success rather than how to find a true calling. I do think I have found that true calling already thus this part was not interesting for me. I was fresh out of grad school when I got this book and despite having some work experience I did not think I had come even close to starting to figure out office politics etc. This book has not offered me many new insights and I still feel I am at the starting point re: survival and success. If anyone has good tips on books that might be more helpful, please let me know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr Ball's book really got me rolling
I've been in the workforce for almost twenty years, and am only now going back to college, but I felt like this book was written just for me.It talks about direction, and uses words we don't see enough of - like Passion, and Value. After working in customer service for so long, every word he said rang true.It is obvious he has studied many succesful people (from the quotes and anecdotes he sprinkles throughout the book) and is trying to pass on what he has learned from them while emphasizing that most important third dimension of work - satisfaction.(The first and second being Money and a Benefit Package *wink*)

While the theme is a serious one, the book is a great read.Michael's style makes you feel like he's right there in the room telling his jokes in person. The intimacy really worked for me.I'm glad I picked this up - I might even change my major! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My Family Enjoyed It
This book interested not only the kids but many curious adults as well. fun book.

5-0 out of 5 stars great balls of fun!
A very energetic and engaging book. Sure, it's for kids, but it's full of information, facts, humor, fascinating details that older readers would really enjoy. I have Balls! the companion volume. Together, they really create an amazing history of sports, games, and athletic inventiveness.
Plus, it's a book for kids who love sports, and for kids who really are more interested in how culture, civilization, and manufacturing all continue to change even ordinary objects such as balls. A very clever and amusing book, with lots of visual character, smart design, and different styles of prose to keep readers turning the pages.

Product Description
It s old school and new school. It s unique and ubiquitous. It s yellow and white. It s red, white, and blue. It s one of America s favorite brands: a classic for nearly 60 years and still a fad-proof fan favorite. The Wiffle Ball remains the great equalizer, befuddling batters of all ages. It curves, zips, and zooms with a mind of its own, turning anyone into a major league pitcher. It stands alone with its eight slots of perforated perfection, distinguished by its asymmetry and unpredictability. With millions of Wiffle bats and balls sold each year, its following is unparalleled with a devotion bordering on obsession. Just ask comedian Drew Carey s manager, Rick Messina, creator of Strawberry Field, one of the country s premier Wiffle venues. Turning his neighbor s adjoining house into a press box and locker room with stadium seats and lights, Mussina set the gold standard for the backyard Wiffle field. In Wiffle Ball, author Michael Hermann, president of Wicked Cow Entertainment, and The Wiffle Ball Inc. s, brand managers, gives readers an inside look at this palatial Wiffle get-up and at the best Wiffle fields around, as well as the down-and-dirty on how in 1953 a down-on-his luck shoe polish salesman and his 13-year-old son concocted the first Wiffle Ball from spare perfume packaging, turning a plastic orb into an American icon. You ll explore The Science of Wiffle, and why a Wiffle Ball, well, wiffles. You ll also learn all the how to s: how to build the best field; how to throw the best sinker ball; and how to best tape up a Wiffle Bat. Did you know Wiffle Bats were once made of wood? You ll find out why here. And best of all, major leaguers and A-list celebs will share their fondest and funniest Wiffle memories. After all, who doesnt love Wiffle Ball? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you enjoy Wiffle - buy Michael's book!
Michael Hermann has put together a most informative book about Wiffle Ball, past and present. The reader is introduced to the family who started it all, someone the author knows personally. The book is well-written and a lot of fun to refer back to, even after you've finished the last page!I think baseball fans would enjoy Wiffle's story - of how Wiffle Ball came to be and how it's played today.I would highly recommend this book - the author has a unique style to his writing, almost conversational.I thoroughly enjoyed reading Wiffle Ball - The Ultimate Guide, and would highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Own
Great Book.A perfect gift for the avid sports fan. Michael's love for the game definitely comes through in his writing.Love the interviews and tips. Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift.
Awesome book.I went through it one Saturday and have opened it back up various times since. It's a very fun read about wiffle, baseball and all those things entail for fans like me.I'm not a thoughtful gift-giver type of guy but this will be great for me for Christmas to send copies to a lot of old friends who I haven't seen in years. I do worry that the guys in Vermont with Little Fenway and Little Wrigley may get a lot of gawkers and interlopers like me now who need to play there and take pictures.I'm glad there was finally a book out about this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything You Want to Know - And Then Some - In Two Hours
Spring is finally here and I decided to wrangle up friends using a game of Wiffle Ball as the hook. I bought the book to get the story behind the story; like just about every other kid in America, summertime was synonymous with Wiffle games and the ever-elusive skills to make the ball curve on demand. Now in my 30s, it's the absolute ideal reason to gather guys & gals in the park and escape the apartment. Armed with the book, I figured I'd toss out some fun facts to the gang and get an academic perspective on how to pitch a competitive game.

To that end, the book overdelivers. It's a fun read. Period. In my estimation, it's got exactly the right amount of history, trivia, strategy and editorial from a cornucopia of celebs (only Wiffle could find a link between Dr. J and the Jonas Brothers). The book is a fast read - I think I got through it cover-to-cover in about two hours, and it's formatted to give you the story & the skills right away....seemingly in an effort to get you out swinging the iconic yellow bat as soon as possible. And to that end, we had an awesome game last Sunday that went nearly 3 hours! My pitch still needs work, but the summer lays ahead.

I don't quite understand one of the previous reviews where the writing is criticized as "too colloquial". Um, it's Wiffle Ball - did you see the cover? In my opinion, Hermann's writing style matches the fun, family, throwback-to-youth energy that embodies Wiffle energy. If you're a lifelong Wiffle expert, then yes, you will likely know most of what the book offers, but it doesn't mean you can make the slotted ball dive & curve......

3-0 out of 5 stars Wiffle Ball: A counter culture more deserving of a better book
I bought this book the day it was released. I'm an avid wiffleball player and fan. I write columns for a national wiffleball website. I've played the game my whole life and ran a league for about 7 years. Needless to say...I know a lot about wiffleball. So the idea of buying a book about something I already know a lot about doesn't sound like a good idea but I had to have a copy just for sentiment. While there are some things in there I didn't know there was a lot of overkill about the mullany family which is important, because they did invent the product afterall. My biggest problem with this book is it's unprofessional writing. I don't know if it's because I have too high of standards when reading about something that is a major hobby of mine or if I'm used to reading good writing -- either way the writing for this book was unsatisfactory. It's too conversational and colloquial. When used effectively that type of writing can be quite good, mental floss for an example. But this guy just doesn't pull it off. There are some weird mechanical issues in the book too. There are a couple of sentences in there that you can try to read over and over again and they make no more sense than the first attempt you put into reading it. It's just plain bad writing.
The thing I like most about this book is that they go into depth about some of the most successful wifflers to ever play the game. The guy who build little Fenway is in there and so is the guy who founded the Golden Stick Wiffleball League. Fat Bastard Wiffleball is also mentioned. At the index of the book there is a directory of well-known wiffleball leagues in the country, which is nice except they missed several cool leagues. Oh well. This book does effectively convey that wiffleball isn't just a kid's game anymore, it's a culture. Wiffleball has grown from a simple game to a way of life for some. The book wasn't awful but I was expecting a lot more. If there weren't those errors in the writing (which there aren't a whole lot but enough) I would have enjoyed it more. If you don't know a lot about wiffleball or the history of the sport then this book might fit your bill nicely. But if you've played the game for a while and know the ropes this book will be of little value to you other than as a collectors item. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Draw Dragon Ball Z
This is a great book if you like Dragon Ball Z. You can learn how to draw them. Easy steps to go by.

1-0 out of 5 stars Are they Kidding?!
This book does not help me draw at all. I don't actually have the book, I just rented it from the library to see how to draw guys better, (I'm a girl) but this book in my oppinion is absolute CRAP! I'm twelve years old and I draw manga just as well as in real comics. (At least the girls.) My, "how to draw manga books" show way more examples and poses! I returned it after I read through it! There is no social poses or anything in this book. What if you just wanted to draw one of those characters smiling or in a nice pose, not just about to rip someone's head of. Don't get this book, you'll be way disapionted! I would recoment the book, "Lets Draw Manga". It is great!

1-0 out of 5 stars Male Cow Excrement - B S Watson
I have this book and I know drawing techniques (not in this book), this book provides little credibility and I fail to see how Scholastic Inc can promote it let a lone distribute it.I would not recommend this book at all to anyone learning to draw... BUT I would recommend it to the children that use it to trace or colour-in; namely the children that gave this book a ridiculously high review - that or just fans of the DBz site (children that don't understand the importance of accurate reviews).

3-0 out of 5 stars It Was OKAY
It could of been alot better but..... once you practice a little you can make up different poses!! it should of had better stuff like background but none of it really looked like in the shows. It could of been alot better. But I think it was worth its money. but it is a good starting point.

1-0 out of 5 stars a poor excuse for a book
I was extremely unhappy with this book. For one, we get one, maybe 2 poses of each character, and none in their "classic" stance. Goku in a fierce battle pose is one thing, but what if I just wanted typical Goku smile? And there's hardly any Vegeta or Piccolo. I would totally keep my [money] if I were you... ... Read more

Product Description

Anetso, a centuries-old Cherokee ball game still played today, is a vigorous, sometimes violent activity that rewards speed, strength, and agility. At the same time, it is the focus of several linked ritual activities. Is it a sport? Is it a religious ritual? Could it possibly be both? Why has it lasted so long, surviving through centuries of upheaval and change?

Based on his work in the field and in the archives, Michael J. Zogry argues that members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Nation continue to perform selected aspects of their cultural identity by engaging in anetso, itself the hub of an extended ceremonial complex, or cycle. A precursor to lacrosse, anetso appears in all manner of Cherokee cultural narratives and has figured prominently in the written accounts of non-Cherokee observers for almost three hundred years. The anetso ceremonial complex incorporates a variety of activities which, taken together, complicate standard scholarly distinctions such as game versus ritual, public display versus private performance, and tradition versus innovation.

Zogry's examination provides a striking opportunity for rethinking the understanding of ritual and performance as well as their relationship to cultural identity. It also offers a sharp reappraisal of scholarly discourse on the Cherokee religious system, with particular focus on the Eastern Band of Cherokee Nation.

Product Description

This guide to playreading for students and practitioners of both theater and literature complements, rather then contradicts or repeats, traditional methods of literary analysis of scripts.

Ball developed his method during his work as Literary Director at the Guthrie Theater, building his guide on the crafts playwrights of every period and style use to make their plays stageworthy. The text is full of tools for students and practitioners to use as they investigate plot, character, theme, exposition, imagery, motivation/obstacle/conflict, theatricality, and the other crucial parts of the superstructure of a play. He includes guides for discovering what the playwright considers the play’s most important elements, thus permitting interpretation based on the foundation of the play rather than its details.

Using Hamlet as illustration, Ball assures a familiar base for illustrating script-reading techniques as well as examples of the kinds of misinterpretation readers can fall prey to by ignoring the craft of the playwright. Of immense utility to those who want to put plays on the stage (actors, directors, designers, production specialists) Backwards and Forwards is also a fine playwriting manual because the structures it describes are the primary tools of the playwright.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended by a theater director--for all who read plays
This book was an eye-opener for me. My sister-in-law, who teaches theater and directs many plays, recommended it. It's intended for directors, to show them how to analyze play scripts--backwards and forwards. I would recommend it to playwrights, readers of plays, and theater audiences. And especially to Shakespeare fans. The author does a brilliant analysis of Hamlet (as an example), showing how Shakespeare builds up suspense and keeps the play moving--action, action, action--by means of scenes that are often cut as unnecessary. ... Product Description
Baseball is in trouble. Yes, revenue has never been higher, attendance has never been better, and baseball has never had a stronger international presence. But the game has rarely faced more significant problems: Steroid scandals, management-labor rifts, self-centered superstars, a dramatic decline in the number of African American players and fans, constraints on youth baseball fields and resources, and competition from other sports and entertainment options all threaten the foundations of our national pastime.

Dave Winfield knows and loves the game and he believes baseball can be rescued and revitalized. A respected role model and ambassador of the sport, Winfield outlines his strategy for making baseball the game he knows it can be: inclusive, empowering, and entertaining. He focuses on how to make the game more fan-friendly, and especially how to reach out to the African American community. From the commissioner's office to the kids on the street, Winfield examines the game from every perspective, offering ideas and solutions for diversifying front offices; marketing the game; developing community-based programs; and working out fair, creative, and lucrative parameters for the business of baseball. Making the Play inspires readers to get out of the armchair and into the action. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Insight from a Baseball Legend
Winfield is probably one of the best if not the best player to play at all-star quality all the way into his 40s. Nolan Ryan and Cal Ripken junior are the only other two that come to mind from the past few decades. That's pretty impressive. That kind of lifelong success and years spent in the majors gives his opinions some credibility. He knows what it's like from the player and fan point of view. It's nice to seem some constructive positive points being made. Too many people are crying about the state of baseball without any ideas on how to fix it. Winfield has ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Blue-Print for Baseball's Future
Former star Dave Winfield presents an intelligent, wide-reaching plan for getting baseball back to its status as the nation's number one sport. As Winfield correctly emphasizes, baseball's current profitability and high attendance are not enough. The sport has suffered a loss in terms of popular culture, and the choice game of young viewers on TV and kids in the sandlots. Winfield offers suggestions for re-invigorating the game via an umbrella organization that he calls Baseball United. Under this more unified approach, he foresees more support for the game at the community level, in the inner city, on television, the internet, etc. Winfield recognizes the long-term harm of bickering between players and owners, recommending a baseball-united type of cooperation and eye towards the future. He also calls for increased efforts by the sport to install media-savvy promotion to match (or outdo) that of the NBA and NFL. I'd have liked him to look into complicated issues like anti-trust exemption, and the book did have a couple factual errors. Still, Winfield's love for baseball comes through loud and clear. The overall result is a thoughtful, forward-looking blueprint for a game that has captured the hearts of so many of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Hall Of Fame Solution To Baseball's Problems
This book deals with specific problems, and proposes specific solutions. This probably is for people who are interested in baseball, but this reflects a person that has experiences beyond baseball (though baseball is his life). After all, how many people know the author was drafted into three different pro sports leagues?(He obviously chose baseball.)

Winfield does a good job of identifying the problems and focusing on each of the involved parties. He also has a clear picture of how to resolve those problems.

I recommend this book to two groups of people. The first are those who care about baseball. The second are those who are in the role of problem solvers and can use an example how to positively solve problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars very strong book
off the Bat when George Steinbrenner is the doing the introduction then you know anything can be resolved. Brother Dave Winfield is a down to earth cat who pulls no punches and wants to see More Young Black Players respecting and knowing the what the Negro League,Jackie Robinson,Larry DOlby and other Black Ball Players who paved the way through Blood, sweat, tears to play this National past time. Dave Winfield has alot of strong concepts at making the game even better and also a strong future. this is a must read book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good start
This book did what I expected it to.It laid out some good ideas that Winfield feels would both improve the game of baseball and improve the image of baseball. In these times of steroids (allegedly, of course) and poorly behaved athletes, a clear, "UNITED" manifesto and direction for baseball is something the game clearly needs.Winfield delivers this.

Another reviewer points out that there are no "A-ha!" moments in this.I have to agree with him, HOWEVER, I think that is really actually the point. What Winfield proposes in this book is not earth-shattering, but one must believe that implementing these changes, the game will be better, both on and off the field. What is so shocking, to me, is that implementing a lot of these changes should really be so simple that the true "A-ha!" is that they aren't already being done!

What muddles the book, though, is that the book does get to be a bit rambly. It is hard not to feel like this is a beefed-up transcription of a monologue that Winfield gave one afternoon. It seems to me, though, that any type of book, whether about baseball or politics or knitting, in which the author is making a proposal, or making a pitch to a certain way of thinking, that there will be some extent of "ramble".

I would take Winfield to task, though, in that he at times seems to ignore the white elephant in the corner of the room. He, at times, lets people off the hook a little too easily and does not take them to task. But you should kind of expect that from him.I'm not questioning his integrity, but, as others have pointed out, he has one foot in both sectors of the game- as the former player and the current executive. His allegiances are, unfortunately, prone to being a bit murky.

Having said all this, I still give this book 4 stars, because he has very good suggestions for all aspects of the game, suggestions that will surely not hurt the game.If I were to become commissioner of MLB, he'd be one of the first people I'd bring in. ... Read more

This analysis of Britain today takes a look at the main disputes over the economy, social policy and politics. In sections on Britain's economic development, the changing nature of waged work, the distribution of housing, health and education, the impact or otherwise of the Thatcher years, and the reconstruction of inequality, it challenges the widely held notion that Thatcher has brought about a radical break with the past; instead the authors emphasize the longer term antecedents of current development. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Unintentionally funny
Well,

I have been a pro-wrestling fan since 1987 and I recently wrote a thesis about it for my University. Obviously I bought this book in order to have some "scientific" background to back up my work. Unfortunately, while Mr Ball used a scientific approach, his book is completely outdated and some of the clichés mentionned are quite laughable to say the very least. I'm not questionning the author's work ethic but it is quite obvious that he does not grasp the wrestling business nor its fans, who are totally taken for granted in this book. If you are a wrestling fan with a decent knowledge of the sport, you won't be fooled and you can order this book just to realise how easily scientific approaches can be misleading. If, on the other hand, you are totally new to the world of wrestling and if you want to read a "scientific" approach teaching you the "bases" of wrestling I would recommend you Sharon Mazer's book, which does a FAR better job of describing this unique business. DO NOT buy this book if you intend to use it as a tool to cover today's pro-wrestling (in a academic paper for instance). Because quite frankly, it only describes a long-gone reality that has nothing to do with today's "Sports Entertainment". Must be taken with a lot of hindsight and with a big grain of salt. Also contains several mistakes. Can be interesting if you want to see how much times changed. Not a bad book per se, but unfortunately the author does not have a clue on this business. That's too bad because it's clear he wanted to use a good methodology.

Hope it helped. ... Read more

What Becomes an Icon Most?

Fifty-five years ago, a sitcom called I Love Lucy transformed the television landscape and made its leading lady, Lucille Ball, a superstar. No one could have known that Ball, formerly a showgirl, B-movie queen, and radio actress, would become one of the world’s most beloved performers, and take her place in a rare pantheon reserved for the likes of Elvis, Marilyn, and Chaplin.

This book, by acclaimed Lucy author Michael Karol—Lucy A to Z: The Lucille Ball Encyclopedia, The Lucille Ball Quiz Book, Lucy in Print—examines Ball’s impact and dissects what it was, and is, that makes Lucy not only an icon of laughter, but a powerful tonic in a troubled world. ... Read more

Product Description
Responding to the sustained interest in and controversial discussion of the prospects of hydrogen, this book strives to reflect critically on the perspectives of a hydrogen economy in light of the global energy challenge, in particular the question how to meet the growing demand for transport energy in the long term and how to secure sustainable energy for transportation.

This book stands out from other publications by its emphasis on setting the scene for hydrogen and the comprehensive coverage of all aspects related to the hydrogen subject, that is technical, environmental and socio-economic, and with a global geographic scope.

The aim is to provide a reference book and compendium about hydrogen that should be of interest to anyone who wants to catch up on the status of the hydrogen discussion, look up a specific aspect related to hydrogen, or understand how hydrogen comes off compared to other mobility solutions. The book should appeal to a fairly broad readership: academia, policy makers and industry.

Product Description
If Cap Anson was baseball's first star, King Kelly was the first player whose celebrity extended beyond the diamond. The dashing mustachioed Kelly was a favorite of newspapermen, who lionized him as "King of the Diamond" and "The $10,000 Beauty"; of fans, who celebrated his daring in song ("Slide, Kelly, Slide") and his grace in poetry ("Beautiful Mike"); and certainly of the baseball establishment, which was willing to pay outrageous sums for his services. Off the field, he pursued an interest in acting, and played parts in a number of theatrical productions. And in 1888, reacting to what he described as the bookishness of his new baseball home in Boston, Kelly even tried his hand at writing.

Play Ball: Stories from the Diamond Field was the first-ever memoir by a player. One of the most popular baseball titles of all time, Play Ball is a casual, often humorous stroll through Kelly’s ball-playing past, with chapters on the teams he played for, the men he played alongside, his relationships with baseball figures such as Anson and Albert Spalding, his early involvement with John Ward’s Brotherhood, his legendary contract with the Beaneaters, and his barnstorming adventures in the South and West. ...
