5-0 out of 5 stars Loved the book have to agree about the background images though...
I'm not even done with this book yet; I am ingesting it slowly even as I sit in front of my edit station. Some of the questions that I have had for a long time were answered in the first chapter. It is definately not a how to book; it isn't a tutorial based or program specific book. Think of The Art and Science of Digital Compositing by Ron Brinkmann (which I also own btw). Imagine being able to pick the brains of some of the most successful editors of our time. That is what this book is like. Sitting at a coffe house or at the dinner table and just listening to what they all have to say about the craft. I would recommend this book to anyone involved in the creative process at any level: animators, producers, writers, etc. All can benefit from the information in this book. I'm sure I'll come back and write an full review when I'm actually done with the book. I'm surprised that there are so little reviews about it. I've been telling everyone I know to buy it. Especially since you can get it for such a low price. Anyway, I have to agree with"garyj_temple"on this one. The content is sure to be timeless. This stuff will be relevant for years to come. However, they shot themselves in the foot by putting the text over those images. I'm still giving it 5 *'s though; the good things definately out weigh the bad...

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved It- Hated One Thing!
Loved thecontent.A great book. Not how to do it, but more of a look into the minds of some great editors.

One majorflaw is a result of a great idea - gone wrong.Text is presented over image backgrounds. This makes for tired eyes at the end of a long read.In a few cases, there is black text on very dark background. You have to want to know what it says to put the effort into reading it.I'm sure there will be many negative comments on this aspect of the book.

However, I'm sticking with my 5 STARS.I believe the content was that good.Therewas only one chapter that I found ordinary.Great insights on almost every page. ... Read more

Product Description
The 1950s and early 1960s are considered by many to be the Golden Era of Racing at the Indianapolis 500, and photographer Ben Lawrence was on hand taking photos of the Greatest Spectacle for the Indianapolis Times. During that era, Ben captured many images of the race and race events that surrounded the Indy 500. He was there when Bill Vukovich met his fate in 1955. He photographed the first Indianapolis 500 Parade, which has become an annual event. He captured A.J. Foyt winning his first race at the Brickyard. He was on hand to photograph the breaking of the 150-mph barrier. Then he saw the transition from the front-engined Offenhauser to the rear-engined Lotus-Fords, which ended the Golden Era. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, for what it is
The "Images of Sports" series is intended to be a scrapbook history of a team, or in this case of an event.

This 127 page book is comprised of photographs taken by Ben Lawrence, a photographer for the now-defunct Indianapolis Times from 1956-1965.This book is not a comprehensive history of the Indy 500, but rather a photographic scrapbook, a yearbook, if you will.

In a way, it was also a Golden Era for the Speedway with the new (also now defunct) scoring tower and the arrival of mainstays such as A.J. Foyt, Parnelli Jones and the Unsers. There are captions for all pictures and a few introductory paragraphs for each new section.

Not only does the reader get pictures from the race but also from the first 500 Festival parades, shots of the fans, candid shots of the drivers, track workers and even celebrities (the Jayne Mansfield shot is something else!). The race is more than just a race, it is an event, the biggest thing that happens in Indiana all year long and the book gives us an idea what it was like 50 years ago.

2-0 out of 5 stars nothing special about the pics
The best shot in the book is the one on the cover! The rest appear pretty amateurish and many are even out of focus. A disappointment for this 500 fan....

2-0 out of 5 stars The Indy 500: 1956-1065 (images of Sports)

Product Description
Ben Casnocha discovered he was entrepreneur at age 12 and hasn't slowed down since. In this remarkably instructive book, Ben dissects the entrepreneurship "gene," explaining that everyone has inherited it if they have an idea to make the world a better place. In Casnocha's case, he found a better way for city governments to communicate with constituents on the Web. Six years later, Comcate has dozens of municipal clients, a growing staff, and a record of excellence. This book is the story of his start-up, but also a conversation with his mentors, clients and fellow entrepreneurs about how to make a business idea work?and how to have the time of your life trying. From Pat Lencioni to Marc Benioff of salesforce.com, Ben has won over the best and brightest of the business world?now it's your turn! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Frontline entrepreneurship
A captivating read and a candid story of Ben's startup experience with Comcate. If you thought your young age and `lack of business acumen and experience' was working against you, think twice after learning how Ben handled his business pitches at the ripe business age of fourteen. The story comes to life on every page and offers countless advice - I couldn't help it, I read it in one sitting. A must read for any entrepreneur, both seasoned and new to the game.

4-0 out of 5 stars PARENTING A PRODIGY
FASCINATING BOOK, FASCINATING KID. AS A PARENT I WOULD HAVE LIKED MORE INFORMATION ON HOW HIS PARENTS NURTURED HIN AS A VERY SPECIAL CHILD

1-0 out of 5 stars Hype machine
Lots of hype in promoting this book, almost no content to speak about. Maybe useful for teenagers...

5-0 out of 5 stars Profound, sensible and compact.
Mr. Casnocha does an excellent job at pulling out the intrinsic meaning behind moments in his own life and illustrates how that meaning has played a role in his growth and development.Moreso, I found it very inspiring. It really encourages one to get up and DO something in their life, whether that be to write a book, paint a picture, go travelling, or start up a business. It is a very enjoyable read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless.
The more I read of the book, the more I realized it was useless.First, it would have been nice if Mr. Casnocha had given us a little more information as to his business success.About all he mentions is that he started two companies. The first is apparently defunct, and no evidence is given that the second is profitable.Frankly, I wonder why we're supposed to take the advice of someone who seems unqualified to give it.

Second, as you might have guessed, the advice is useless. It would be nice to think Mr. Casnocha has learned a lot in the business world, but the knowledge he passes on in this book is on the level of ANY nineteen-year-old.

There are thousands of books on entrepreneurship that are worth your time. This isn't one.In fact, I'd recommend to Mr. Casnocha that if he wants any of his businesses to succeed over the long term, he should stop writing and start reading. ... Read more

Product Description
Of all the skill sets that support the shift from a traditional management role to a more collaborative approach, none is more relevant than that of the role of the facilitator. The beliefs, behaviors, and practices of facilitation are precisely what all leaders need to acquire and put into action. In Facilitating to Lead! renowned facilitation expert Ingrid Bens applies her proven concepts of facilitation to the leadership role and demonstrates that facilitation is an effective work style, not merely a meeting technique. Throughout the book, Bens outlines the organizational and personal benefits of facilitative leadership and includes useful checklists to help leaders determine the situations when facilitative leadership is most appropriate to apply. Because empowerment is a core issue in the implementation of facilitative leadership, the book presents a four-level model that reframes empowerment from a vague concept to a concrete structuring tool. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Years of Knowledge in One Neat Package
As a Human Performance Technologist, I am constantly running into situations where I need to use facilitating skills.I have acquired such skills and knowledge over years of experience and practice. This book, Facilitating With Ease!," neatly packages the knowledge components required of a Facilitator and provides useful tools to be used in practice.I am planning to use this book with a client in training new facilitators to facilitate discussions of ethical business leadership. I wish I had this book 10 years ago!

5-0 out of 5 stars COMPREHENSIVE, CLEAR AND CONCISE.
Details core facilitation tools and techniques. Chapters cover: understanding facilitation; facilitation stages; assessing and understanding participants; creating participation; effective decision making; facilitating conflict; meeting management; process tools for facilitators (e.g., visioning, exit surveys, brainstorming) and process designs. This is a well organized 'soup to nuts' reference including worksheets on CD-ROM that can be customized. Comprehensive, clear, and concise.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
Companies that embrace work teams quickly discover a basic truth: More teams mean more meetings. Management experts laud the benefits of enlightened teamwork, but they spend much less time dwelling on the often long, sometimes pointless and nearly always inefficient meetings that teams breed. With teams fast becoming a fixture in the corporate world, meeting management, or facilitation, is becoming a critical skill for anyone with executive ambitions. Author Ingrid Bens' definition of a facilitator is quite specific - someone who guides a meeting without actually participating in discussion or decision making - but her book is filled with practical advice that any professional can apply when running a meeting. A host of charts, examples and worksheets (not to mention the accompanying CD) help illustrate her process for steering meetings without controlling or directing the outcome. We [...] recommend this hands-on how-to guide to anyone motivated to minimize the waste of meeting-creep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Facilitating With Ease!
I have had the privilege of participating in workshops taught by Ingrid Bens: this is like having her in your own training room! The information in this book is both relevant and concise.I use the book to lead my facilitation team through all of their group dynamics training. The CD-ROM allows me the freedom to customize the worksheets to meet our needs. This is a great book that I highly recommend to all individuals who work in teams, lead meetings, or need assistance in group dynamics ... Read more

Excerpt: Philip Joel Urry (born January 5, 1973) is a musician known as a solo artist in addition to being the former bassist for the Christian rock Group, the Newsboys. He uses the name Phil Joel professionally due to pronunciation issues with his surname. Phil was born in Auckland, New Zealand. He was lead singer and guitarist in the popular New Zealand band Drinkwater. Though he had little experience with the instrument, the Newsboys offered him a position as bassist in August 1994. He said at the time, "I already know how to play a guitar with six strings, four should be a cinch." He also sang background and some lead vocals for the band. In June 2000, Phil released his first solo album, Watching Over You, on Inpop Records. This release is largely autobiographical, , and of experiences with missions work in Third world countries. 5-0 out of 5 stars useful for those new to mobile tech
As a nonprofit tech professional looking to explore mobile campaigns, I found the chapter on mobile tech really clarified this burgeoning field. I was so thankful, in particular, for the "How to Get Started" section. It explained so well how to actually make it happen. By the time I was done, I had a good sense of the landscape and was able to move ahead in my nonprofit's plans for a mobile giving campaign. Couldn't ask for more!

My copy of Mobilizing Generation 2.0 is dog-eared. I think. I'm not exactly sure what it looks like, anymore -- I keep lending it out. I do know it's easy to read, inspiring, useful.
Mobilizing Generation 2.0: A Practical Guide to Using Web2.0 Technologies to Recruit, Organize and Engage Youth

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Reach out to the Networked Public - a must-read!
There are books you enjoy because they are entertaining and there are books you enjoy because they make you think. This title is a part of the latter group. Ben Rigby clearly knows Web 2.0 and he also knows nonprofits. This combination make him excellent to convey to others in the nonprofit space how to better take advantage of social media tools to raise awareness, do fundraising and become more effective change agents.

All the chapters are structured similarly, with an opening section devoted to the understanding of the different technologies (blogging, social networking, video/photo sharing, mobile phones, etc.) and how they are being used by nonprofits and the public sector. Following comes a part that walks the reader through the basics of getting setup and running. Strategic considerations and possible challenges wrap up the chapter's core. As a prologue to each chapter there are two outside authors offering their "big picture" view to complement the topic.

Granted that the book goes well beyond Web 2.0, covering mobile technology and Second Life, one should not get too hung up on this subtlety. Mobilizing Generation 2.0 is a must-read for anyone working in a nonprofit or the public sector, wanting to connect to that ironically elusive "networked public," as described by Danah Boyd in one of the "big picture" essays.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth reading
For an ignoramus about blogging, social networks, etc. I find Rigby's book to be clear and informative. The case studies are extremely useful. He takes a balanced view of what can accomplished via the Internet and other modern electronic marvels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for anyone that wants to get started with Web 2.0!
This book is great for anyone who wants to get started with web 2.0. It is especially useful for nonprofit orgs and political campaigns. It is an easy read, aimed at getting people started. This is not a book for the super advanced web strategist.

The author reassuringly holds your hand - enthusiastically walking you through blogging, social networking, video and photo sharing, mobile phone advocacy, wikis, maps, virtual worlds, and more.

With inspiring "big picture" essays interwoven between chapters, useful endnotes at the end of each chapter for further reading, and practical real-world case studies, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in exploring what web 2.0 can offer to a nonprofit organization or a political campaign.
