Alan Bean's unique view
As one of the few people to ever have the opportunity to set foot on another world, it is lucky that Alan Bean was able to find his talent for painting.
Many times the images we have of those remarkable missions show a relatively bleak and nearly monochromatic moonscape.Bean is able to show us the subtile colors and shades that were not tranferable to the image making of the late 60's and early 70's.He is also able to take us on the flights of fantasy that only the men of his unique calibre are able to ingage.He also tries to share his spirital and personal changes in his visual world.
The paintings are reproduced in a high quality printing, with the colors and images coming through in a vibrant and pleasing way.
All in all an excellent book from a man with a very unique talent and viewpoint.

My Book on an Island
Alan Bean amazes me every time he releases a new painting.I check back to his website often and try to keep up and dream of which order I would buy them in if I were to win a great lottery!Anyone who buys this book has done just that, won a great lottery.Captain Bean is the fourth of twelve moonwalkers and one of the youngest and hitting 80 soon.That said to state the obvious, "read about an American history while he's a living hero that you can go to an art gallery and see!"But the book!Oh my, if given a choice of books to take along with me when I'm to be left alone on an island I want this one!Each day I'll look at a new picture and find new intricacies,touches and dynamics. Then the next year I won't go chronological I'll try to decide how the trip took place for the crew not the order in which they were painted.Year after year would pass and yet I'd leave that island with the grandest love and respect for Alan Bean's knowledge and paintings but because I still wouldn't be finished enjoying, devouring, appreciating and continuing to pretend I was there with him as he saw each "picture" in his mind or tells me the joke as to how his whole crew is on the moon at the same time! I wouldn't leave the book behind once rescued, I'd take it back with me, holding it carefully, large palm moonwalkerleaves carefully folded around it to protect the binding so as not to loose a page or a moment in Mr. Bean's history!It's a book that will entertain and inspire me for as long as the pages will hold the gorgeous art.

Great for Space Enthusiasts
I am a lifetime space enthusiast, and this book is a great addition to my collection. Amazing combination of style, skill, moon artifacts, and actual events or ideas. Each painting has it's own story. I give only four stars because the description of each painting is at the back of the book instead of by each picture - annoying to flip back and forth.

A unique collection of art
Alan Bean's reason for producing this book was simple: while artists have enthralled us by reproducing natural beauty and historical scenes, no artists ever traveled to the moon. Until Alan Bean himself did on Apollo 12. Bean uses the paintbrush to evoke what it felt like to visit and travel the moon. Many of the paintings evoke a sort of New Frontier nationalism, with astronauts as the iconic cowboys of a Remington painting. One really interesting painting technique he uses is to incorporate parts of the Apollo mission into his actual painting style. For example, to provide texture, sometimes he will paint on a space suit bootprint or a piece of a spacecraft. The paintings themselves look like they have small craters. This creates a visually original effect - one that probably inspired directly by Bean's time exploring the moon.

I am an artist and I can say as fellow artists know - observation and experience add so much to the artwork one creates.... To view a persons work that has been on the Moon and an artist is such an inspiration for me as my passion for astronomy is equal that of art.

Bought it for the artwork
I bought this because of the illustrations. I am an artist and illustrator myself and Alan Beans work is outstanding.
The fact that he was there and did it makes his art all the better.

Beautiful book in every way
When you get Alan Bean, astronaut and amazing artist, with Andrew Chaikin, a tremendous writer, you have the recipe for one magnificent book. The artwork, of course, is the main ingredient and it never disappoints. Alan Bean has a unique talent and tells the tale of going to the Moon in his drawings. Even without the accompanying words, it is easy to lose oneself in the moment. I think there is a certain 'realness' that the photos dont have and I do not know how to adequately explain why.
At any rate, this is a wonderful book and any space fan should not hesitate to pick it up.

An artist from the Moon
There are sometimes laments that we will never get a proper description of what it's really like to be in space until we send a poet. However, though NASA may not have sent a poet, it did send a painter. Al Bean had dabbled in the arts before and during his tenure as an astronaut, but when he retired he focused on becoming a painter and particularly on creating paintings that showed what it was really like to walk around on the surface of the Moon. This book contains many of those paintings.

The text, meanwhile, is yet another memoir by an Apollo astronaut, and if anything is rather on the terse side, with only brief bits leading up to the more extensive Apollo portion, and only a brief conclusion. It's interesting but doesn't stand out amongst the many other astronaut memoirs, except for the accompanying illustrations. Each chapter concludes with a dozen or so pages reproducing Bean's paintings, with Bean explaining the scene he was depicting and what he wanted to show. This makes this book a unique record of one man's trip to the Moon, and, I suppose, won't be matched until we actually do send a poet.

Exquisite Paintings from the Moon
First, let me say Alan Bean is one of the most articulate of the Apollo Astronauts who walked on the Moon.In addition to the painter himself captioning his collective series of truly unique "Paintings from the Moon", you owe it to yourself to purchase the DVD, "For All Mankind".This DVD is reviewed elsewhere on this site, but it and this particular book of Mr. Bean's paintings will likely become most treasured additions to your collection of manned spaceflight memorabilia.

I also found the dramatic characterization of Alan Bean, and exploits of his Apollo 12 crewmates, depicted in Tom Hank's 1998 HBO miniseries, "From the Earth To The Moon", to be very entertaining.Thatespisode of that facinating and truly outstanding TV production was first telecast in 1998.This book was published in the same year and the two works complement each other very well, upstaging most of the other spaceflight documentaries somewhat lacking in humanistic content.

We are very fortunate to have had at least one Astronaut with additional interests other than pure science and aerospace engineering, to share his extraordinary experiences while a key member of the Apollo program.

The one and only thing missing from my copy of this book is Alan Bean's personal autograph!

Mr. Bean's use of his fantastic artwork to describe a part of his life when he was a member of the elite few, chosen by NASA, to become the first to walk on the moon, is the closest you will get to actually being there.

Splendid "splendor"
A great collection of details about the artist, his revelations of His creation and the aeronautical, technological and historical creations of mankind, both in war and peace.I couldn't be happier with a book in my library.

Fabulous aviation paintings well presented

William S Phillips is one of the very top aviation artists, and this collection of his work certainly says why.He is very accurate in his depiction of various aircraft, but also places them in settings that evoke the wonder and romance of flight.I greatly enjoy the book.It's the sort of book you can just crack open anywhere and what you see will please and interest you.Yes, the captions are sometimes a bit corny, but the text gives good historic context to the paintings, and the text gives a window into exactly who this very talented artist is.Very worthwhile purchase!

A Must!
This is simply too good a collection of paintings to not own it. You will enjoy leafing through this book at odd times, getting lost in the picture that is before you and forgetting that it is art and not a slice of life.

Phillip's works are small treasures and owning them in book form is special.

good, but disappointing
I am more of a fan of Phillips "nostalgia" pictures than just the airplane pictures, so I was a little disappointed in the treatment of them. Several were cover pages with printing on them which ruined the nostalgia mood.Several were too small.Several were good.If you are a fan of all of Phillips paintings, then you must have this.The quality is excellent.

Mission Control The Story of the First Voyages to the Moon
This book is very interesting as is all of the Apollo books. Andrew Chalkin is an excellent author.This is the nail-biting account of the trouble with communications between Houston and the Command Modules with every mission. When Apollo 8 launched, it was a good time to test out communications. Communications were eventually sorted out and we have the triumph of Apollo 11. There is some wonderful information here.

Alan Bean is a wonderful artist and his paintings are featured in this book. I already own his leather and gold bound book.

I know more than the usual reader. I am a very rare woman aerospace engineer on the Saturn V. I worked on the first stage, the S-IC.
I know people. :) I recently sent out a query to any Apollo Astronaut. "How was the ride on my beloved Saturn V?"

This book is perfectly laid out for enjoyment and understanding. A nice quick overview of each of the manned Apollo missions. It includes original paintings by astronaut Al Bean (the fourth man on the moon).

Very good book for space race buffs and those who don't yet appreciate the magnificent accomplishments and heroic men of this era of U.S. history.

Mission Control, this is Apollo
I love this book.It is extremely well done, a bit different from the usual - it covers all Apollo flights from One to Seventeen. It isset out beautifully and the illustrations are superb. My grandson is going to be thrilled with this for Christmas.

As a boy, he lived in Minden , the seat of Webster Parish in northwestern Louisiana , where his father worked for the Soil Conservation Service. Bean graduated from R. L. Paschal High School in Fort Worth , Texas . He received a bachelor of science degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1955. At UT he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity (Omega Chi chapter). After a four year tour as a fighter pilot assigned to a jet attack squadron in Jacksonville, Fla. , he trained as a Navy Test Pilot where his instructor was his future Apollo 12 Commander Pete Conrad . He was awarded an honorary doctorate of science from Texas Wesleyan College in 1972, and was presented an honorary doctorate of engineering science degree from the University of Akron (Ohio) in 1974. NASA experience Apollo Bean was selected by NASA as part Astronaut Group 3 in 1963. He was the first person to set foot on the Moon. His first spaceflight was aboard Gemini 8 in 1966, for which he was the command pilot, becoming one of the first U.S. civilians to fly in space (Joseph Albert Walker became the first US civilian in space aboard X-15 Flight 90 several years earlier) and the first civilian in orbit.
