NOT A MUST READ
This book is a good read but not one of those "Don't Miss" stories.The story was interesting butSuzanne is not one of my favorite characters.She has issues with most everyone and she certainly should trust her boyfriend Jake more.She doesn't seem to have much faith in his job skills.

As a fan of culinary mysteries I'm always looking for new books and this one was great. I'm hoping to see more from this author in this series or anything similar.

Not original
This is the second in the series, and while the first was good enough to bring me back for more, I'm disappointed in number two. The protagonist seems to have a bit too much of an attitude, and what may have been intended to come across as a woman with spunk and moxie comes across as a woman who is rude and brash.It's just too much to believe that someone can walk around saying and doing the things she does in this book.And I agree with another reviewer that it reminds you of the Joanne Fluke mysteries where a woman running her own small business becomes involved with the local law enforcement.The donut aspect is interesting, but it was better in the first one.

This is the first of Jessica Beck's that I have read. I've read all of Joanne Fluke's Hannah Swenson books and this book seems like a duplicate of those books.The town, the boyfriend, the townspeople, the baking, etc - all the same. Very un-original! ... Read more

Harder book to put into practice
This book is much harder to use for therapy than her father's. This is more about how to be a cognitive therapist, and is of a textbook style, with only one example case followed through the book. If you want to learn how to be a cognitive therapist this is a good book for that. If you are seeking an overview of how cognitive therapy works and learning specific tools the cognitive therapy for mood disorders is a much better read.

Great book, classic
Excellent book outlining cognitive therapy and how it is applied to patients. Easy to read and offers a great example in every chapter. I used this book as a citation for many of my papers/assignments and even relied on it as a reference for my comprehensive exams. Highly recommended.

This is an excellent learning tool and reference book for learning to understand the basics inCognitive Behavioural Therapy. It is concise and practical. It easily identifies difficulties encountered while using C.B.T.and provides practical solutions.

A great intro book for Psychology
This book compiles all the basic concept of cognitive therapy, and how therapy session is structurally formulated based on individual progress. At the end of each chapter, the author provides a sample therapy session to reinforce the presented concepts, making it easier to grasp.

It covers the foundation of cognitive therapy by Dr. Beck, with the goal of treating anxiety and social phobia effectively. In recent years, cognitive therapy has been considered as an adjunct treatment to conventional medical rehabilitation, and has proven to be as effective.

Later on, it goes on explaining how structured cognitive therapy works, and even illustrates with a sample of worksheet and screening for depression and anxiety.

Excellent Read!
This book is fantastic - it describes 10 easy things you can do to get more out of your life. The activities are not difficult nor do they take much time out of your day. However, they are very helpful in creating a more fulfilling life.

This is a great book, a fun and light gift. I liked the eagle/mouse perspective - sometimes it helps to switch from the big and small picture when looking at situations that are causing grief. I also loved the laughter tickers -- too funny.

Learn why your mind hasn't cooperated with previous diets...
I once asked a very fit personal trainer if she had the ideal diet plan, and what the specifics were about what I should be sure to eat and be sure to avoid; her response was:"You probably already know what to eat and skip, but you're just not doing it."She was so right, but I couldn't figure out WHY I wasn't choosing the carrots over the chocolate, the water over the soda....This bookThe Four Day Win (the 1st "self-help" type of book I've ever read because I'm usually stand-offish to "psycho-babble" kind of writing) totally gives me insight into the WHY behind my choices and lets me stand back and WATCH myself make better, deliberate choices, with no feeling of deprivation, rather a strong feeling of control and with that, pride.. and a slimmer waistline!I really appreciate the understanding of self this book gave me, which resulted in power over my choices and with that, a calm.I love Beck's wit, to boot.I highly recommend this book to anyone who has trouble resisting dessert... or anyone who wants it to become second nature to make good choices in life.Good luck to all.

I already knew that I enjoyed Martha Beck's writing style and her humor.But after many diets and many diet books over the past 20 years - I believe that this book spoke to me the most.Perhaps it was just good timing for me, but at 32 years old I needed advice like this and inspiration toward slow, but continuous, permanent change.No 'get skinny quick' plans that don't work.This is more a book about being a happier person, but the focus is weight and no doubt you will become a happier and thinner person.Don't try to follow everything to the 'T' right away, give yourself time to digest different sections of the book and then take a break and go back to it.That is how I did it and I'm happier and thinner.My age and stage of life helped too, I don't know if this book is for everyone.The fact that I really respect Martha Beck plays a role as well.I highly recommend it and if you don't lose weight, you will definitely gain some other wonderful knowledge & insight!

The Best and Most Pragmatic Book for Couples Counseling
As a clinical social worker and marriage and family therapist, I do a lot of marriage counseling and couples work.I have found that Aaron Beck's 'Love is Never Enough' is the clearest and most effective book to use with couples.Additionally, it has the best outcome.

Couples, under a therapist's guidance, can use this book together.It is easy to read, has great hand-outs and is pragmatic.It focuses on the day-to-day issues that many couples find themselves getting stuck on.

While I think that couples could try to use this book themselves without a therapist's guidance, and are likely to benefit from it, this would apply only to couples who do not have serious issues.Couples with serious issues need to work with a therapist.A book alone is not sufficient.

Helps me improve a wonderful marriage

It would be great if all of you so-called conservatives would move to another State and all of us Liberals could move to a Liberal State. Very pretty first chapter.
Very pretty first chapter, but becomes dryer afterward.Very gentle presentation.Each chapter is apparently a separate lesson, most of which are similar to a number of psychology tracts I've read.The ideas it presents are nicely compartmentalized for periodic one-subject-at-a-time reading.It did not read very well when I tried to just plow through it from cover to cover like I usually do for most books.It has been sort of organized on specific themes in each section, but sometimes it's hard to tell why some chapters were grouped together.Good use of analogy for the most part, but the analogies in some chapters are a bit strained, impairing understand more than helping.

Don't let the title fool you; this book is very sepcial
This is the first book of Beck's that I read; it was excellent, perhaps the best I have read about Zen. Beck is one tough old lady with a no nonsense approach to Zen practice. I highly recommend this book to anyone--veteran or beginner. What I especially like about Beck's approach is how she demystifies Zen. Zen isn't about some lofty bliss state; it's about being right here right now. Her practice forces us to confront and then accept the hardest koans of all--life koans from our everyday experiences. Anger, frustration, grief, these are materials of Beck's Ordinary Mind Zen. I loved it!

Very useful book
I read this book more than a couple of years ago, but I still feel that I benefit from what I learned from it. It really increased my mindfulness and awareness of my own thoughts and behavior. I think that the benefits I got from the book have led me to a better place. I highly recommend it both for disciplined meditators and those who currently are neither disciplined nor meditators :)

Pretty darn special
When I purchased this book online about a year ago, I had no idea what a gift it would be. I was curious about Zen, but hadn't incorporated it into my life quite yet. I read pieces of the book here and there, and I soon realized there was something really incredible about it. It seemed like no matter what I was going through in life, reading only a few pages would "speak" to me incredibly. It feels like this book was written just for me, and I believe that chances are you will feel the same way when you read it for yourself. The book is so excellent that I decided to purchase it for my friend. Finally today I have finished this book, and I can't wait to read it again.

This book is very down to earth. Compassionate, but brutally honest. If you will open your mind and heart, this book will guide you in transforming your "small mind" into "big mind." I would say this book is equivalent to a Christian devotional. Definitely won't hurt to read one short chapter everyday. This book will continue giving, and perhaps you will too. :) ... Read more

I've read a bunch of books on Zen and on other lineages, and looked through a bunch more, and this is really the one that has spoken to me the most, by far.It's specific, wise, relevant, and somehow just generally brings things home in a way that others don't.

Reality, and how to get there
Great book!!

Relates Zen to "day-to-day" American cultural attitudes. Not just some esoteric text (not that there is anything wrong with that!).

One of the best introductory book on Zen practice. Very practical, applicable guides to life-centered living. Joko helps the reader integrate Zen lessons into everyday living. She illustrates how meditation and practice are not only on the cushion but in our daily lives, that the real practice is not during sitting but involved with our actions. We sit not to be better at sitting but to be better at living.

Practical Advice for Living in the present.
I have been a practicing Zen student for 30 years, and I think this book is the best.
If you think you are going to get enlightened and all your problems will be solved, you probably won't like this book, because it may shatter your dreams. Do you want that?

Not totally convinced...
I was looking forward to the Martin Beck series, having read good reviews and had strong recommendations from a friend.I am not as enthralled as I had hoped to be.The book was tedious and I struggled to stay focused and read to it's abrupt end.

Spare, thoughtful... a tough mystery
It is easy to see that Henning Mankell was influenced by Sjowall & Wahloo.Spare, succinct writing in a culturally aware police procedural; with epic overtones.I look forward to reading the whole series of ten to get a better idea of what Sjowall & Wahloo are trying to relate about the state of Sweden 1965-75 and (modern) society.


ROSEANNA is a strange book in some ways.Detective Inspector Martin Beck is an enigmatic and wispy presence.He seems to live and operate on another plane.He is always suffering from a bad stomach, a cold, etc.He is an existential figure.He is compassionate, yet laconic.After his civic duty, he has nothing for his wife and children.He is neither conventionally admirable, nor heroic.


The mystery's plot is tight and satisfying; the book is difficult to put down.It is unflinching, raw,and must have been a revelation in1965.It's hard to shock the modern reader, but the immediacy of ROSEANNA, and the un-answerable questions raised still hold up well when read today.Recommended.

Fantastic
I don't normally write Amazon reviews, but I can't keep my mouth shut about this book. It was one of the best books I've ever read. Lately, I've become a big fan of Swedish police procedurals, devouring Nesser and Mankell, but Sjowall and Wahloo are going right to the top of my "must read this or die" list.

The story is simple: During a routine dredging of a Swedish lake, workers uncover the body of mutilated, strangled young woman. Inspector Martin Beck and his detectives catch the case, and they have their work cut out for them. Who is this woman? Where did she come from? Who did her in? And, most importantly, can they keep him from killing again?

There's just something wonderful about Swedish procedurals. I can't quite put my finger on it, but they're so refreshing and interesting compared to American thrillers, which often drip with gratuitous violence and sex and are terribly written. Generally, the Swedes keep it simple and straightforward, using 10 words where Americans might take 30 to convey the same thing. Sjowall and Wahloo don't disappoint; the writing moves along at a great pace, very smooth and engaging, every word carefully selected. (And clearly translated with love; and precision. I'm normally wary of translations, but the men and women who translate Swedish procedurals are just brilliant.)

Most vivid is the characterization. Like other Swedish authors, Sjowall and Wahloo don't "over-characterize." They don't drown readers with dozens of pages of backstory and physical description. They use adjectives sparingly. Instead, readers are treated to the golden rule: show, don't tell. Actions and dialogue dominate the characterization, giving us a genuine feel for Beck, Ahlberg, Kollander and all the others. Naturally, we get to know Beck the best, spending the majority of the novel with him. He's crisp and realistic.

The writing is suspenseful and compelling. I hate the cliché "couldn't put it down," but seriously, I was glued to this book, frantically trying to finish it at work before the press started. Wahloo and Sjowall start slow with the puzzling discovery of the unknown corpse, slowly add interest to the case, then grab you by the nuts and never let go as it rockets to a fantastic, satisfying conclusion. It's not that there are overly surprising twists and turns -- it's more realistic, in that there are dead ends and misinformation and uncooperative witnesses, and the cops are in the dark, and so are you, feeling your way along the edges in shadow, trying to find the killer.

This book also contains one of the most disturbing, creepiest scenes I've ever read. Without giving too much away: Beck and his team are studying amateur video footage of the fateful cruise, which inadvertently caught shots of the murdered girl. Can't you imagine them in that quiet room, watching jerky, poorly lit, silent 1960s video footage of a girl just hours from her death? Then they start counting down her life: "Here she has 12 hours to live, now just 8, this must have been taken 3 hours before..." It disturbed me all night. Fantastic, wonderfully written, really digs its claws into you. There's a psychological aspect to the case that really affects you and creeps you out -- and dammit, I love it.

If you like crime novels, read this. If you like police procedurals, read this. If you like psychological thrillers, read this. Hell, if you're just looking for good reading, read this. I can't recommend it enough. I'll be buying the remaining Martin Beck books, as well as other novels by the authors, whether paired or individually, as soon as I can. Fantastic.

Entertaining Police Procedural
This is a simple book.A crime is committed and the police, led by Martin Beck, assiduously and systematically track down the killer.As others have noted, the book is tersely written but each sentence is power-packed.As you go through the book, you get a good feel for the characters and the settings.There is enough suspense and drama to keep you riveted, but not overwhelmed.This is a gem of a police procedural in all respects.

A true murder mystery
I have been spoiled with white knuckle murder mysteries that I almost didn't finish this book. Written in 1965, it really made me slow down and think about crimes and how they were solved back then. I think this book was a breath of fresh air, mostly because I'm not used to the old detective or manual solving of a murder.I gave this book a chance and really learned how murders were solved back in the 60s. This book took place mostly in Sweden, with many references to other parts of the world, including Lincoln, Nebraska, where the murder victim was from.If you can get past the obvious grammatical errors made during the translation from Swedish to English, then it is worth the read. However, you have to give this book a chance because the main climax comes about 50 pages to the end of the book. Please don't read just the last pages of the book because it gives an overview of most of the passengers of the boat, why Detective Martin Beck is the way he is, and the gripping details as to how they solved a virtually unsolvable crime. All they started out with was a dead body in a lake.

Glenn Beck
I'm a devoted fan of Glenn Beck's, however, I felt this particular audio book not his best work. However,it was still "good." Beck is an amazing person, his overcoming liquor and dangerous pill and tablet addictions, are inspiring. Beck has come a long way-and in his brief life- met his 'demons' face-to-face, with courage and integrity. His latest goals and accomplishments amaze me. Thank you for allowing me to own this case series.

Love This Book!
I have been a Beck Fan for years and never understood why he was on CNN instead of Fox. The man is intelligent, caring, funny and wonderfully weird... and it all comes through in this book.He covers a great variety of topics including why he is a Mormon, which was so funny I was laughing out loud. I'm not a religious person so it was interesting to me how an adult chooses a particular religion. If you love Glen the way millions of us do, you will love this book. If you are open minded or don't know much about Beck, you will love this book. If you're a typical hate filled liberal who hates Glen Beck, hates Fox News, hates Conservatives and Traditional Values, save your money because you will hate this too.But please, be honest and don't criticize the book if you haven't even read it, just because you don't like Beck.

Great book
This book like all the others Glenn has written is great.I don't think Glenn is a radical or an alarmest.But I do think he has nailed it as solid as anyone could. We can all learn from him and his books.

Interesting I must say...
This book was written by Glenn Beck, whom I must say is very sexy...although I don't agree with everything in his book. His book Common Sense was his best book. Although this book has a lot of facts inside that some people may not want to believe until they do the research themselves. This book is good for those who really want to debate.

Bringing Words to Life: Robust Vocabulary Instruction
This book was recommended to me at an RTI conference. It is quick and easy to read.It is jam packed with ideas and information for how to help your students learn vocabulary.Its a must have.

Revolutionized my concept of vocabulary instruction
I use this book for my children in a homeschool environment.When I first read this book, many of the concepts resonated true (i.e. that children guess at the meanings of words in books and often "miss the mark").The book explains how to pull out words from the books that children are reading, and to use those words as a basis for creating vocabulary worksheets.It gives alternate ways for finding vocabulary words as well.The recommendations in this book are very specific, with several examples.It does not do the work for you - you still have to come up with your own words and worksheets.However, the examples are detailed and clear, and I found the process of creating vocabulary worksheets to be simple.The first couple of times that I created worksheets, I had the book open as I created questions, to make sure that I was not missing any important points.After that, it was a breeze.My oldest is an advanced 3rd grade, and I found the recomemndations useful for her age bracket, but I fully expect to use this for many years to come, as the recommendations cross age boundaries well.

Good for any age
I tutor 9th graders and vocabulary is very important.I loved this book.It not only gave good examples of tier 2 and 3 words but how to find them in what they read and how to present them so that they will use them.I am trying these techniques out on my 9th graders.

If I had world enough and time...
I think the ideas here are sound, but as I read I imagine a team of writers working together and spending many hours devising lessons. Working teachers don't have that much time. It is generally a bad sign when the positive reviews on the back cover of the book are from PhDs. Quite often these people have never actually used the book with students.

The love for words . . .
. . . should certainly be a central goal for all reading teachers to transmit to their students. "Bring Words to Life" serves as an excellent reference for doing just that. A variety of strategies are provided to address the needs of readers across grade levels (sorry, but I disagree with those who believe that books, such as this one, should only address the needs of students at particular grade levels), that will prove useful to all teachers.

Although this is a fairly short book (about 130 pages), it provides a lot of useful material. I would recommend this to anyone involved in teaching reading to children. ... Read more

Beck: the missing link between monkey and human
I try to write a review shortly after completing a book. It's fresh in my mind, my anger or joy are still fresh. In this case, I finished it a couple of months ago at least. So, while it was painful to review my hilights--it's like putting salt on a wound--Beck has made more outrageous claims than those the author listed. So, like a spoiled child not reprimanded for unacceptable behavior, Beck continues to act MORE spoiled. Despite that, his disciples defend him, as if Glennie the Poo can do no wrong. Which leads to my commentary:

All of us, of any ideological stripe, need to beware of demagogues. Heaven knows there were some in the 1960s. (When I was about 16, I thought Gerry Rubin, of the Chicago 10, 9, 8, 7, was neat. By the time I was 17, I'd realized that Rubin was nothing more than attention grabbing twirp. He became a stock broker, and died in his early 50s of a heart attack). These creatures provide us with "answers," they twist and turn us to their needs. They can be far left, they can be far right. What's important is that we get into those categories, suggest that we either love 'em or hate 'em based on those ideologies. But the ideologies don't make any difference. That they're demagogues--cheap car salesmen--does. Beck is demagogue of the most dangerous kind.

The book starts with an interesting assertion, that more than Beck's "talent," it was what was going on in the corporate world of radio, i.e., what was happening with Clear Channel, that caused Glenn's "success."

Doubtless Beck had some talent for radio. He entered some kind of broadcasting contest when he was 16 and won. He'd always looked up to Orson Welles, but the author compares him, appropriately, with P. T. Barnum, the master of self promotion, and among the grandfathers of the insidious side of public relations. The reason I gave the book four instead of five stars was that I'd read a good deal of the book on the web before the book was released, that was, the earlier part of Beck's radio career. He was an AM disc jockey, in short, who moved up the ranks. He got into what was known as "zoo radio" back in the 1980s, when he was also a constant abuser of alcohol and cocaine. In that extremely competitive environment, radio "personalities" competed with each other. In the case of Beck, at one point, he'd made fun of a former colleague's wife's miscarriage. That even ticked off some of his fans. And he wouldn't let up on a member of a competing station's staff who was overweight. When some of his colleagues challenged the wisdom of that, he declared in effect that "all's fair."

He eventually got into "politics," which was becoming popular at the time. Zaitchik points out, as he did on the web before the book's release, that despite his immaturity, he had "a surprisingly mature command of being both obstinate and uninformed." That hasn't changed to this day. Among the "issues" he took on was commening on Vietnam, by quoting the Rambo character (who was, incidentally, fictional!) I mean, that was the depth of which Beck was capable.

To make a long story short, he hopped on a number of bandwagons but after 9/11, he was clearly in the right place at the right time. That's when his career really took off.

Eventually, he's ended up on Faux "News" where he's made a name for himself. Then he got into writing. He wrote The Real America: Messages from the Heart and Heartland which, more than anything else, draws the distinction between "real" Americans and the rest of us whom, he presumes, don't love the country as much as he and his disciples do. Zaitchik calls it a "pop up book of far right myths and canards." That's important because it's mythology more than anything else which Beck manipulates to his economic advantage.

Indeed, what he claims in that book--and many broadcasts since--are the same platitudes I continue to hear from his fans and other far right extremists, and that's why I warn of Beck's demagoguery.

Some have criticized Zaitchik's alleged slighting of Beck's Mormon membership. First, of all denominations, the Mormons are the most transparent. Second, Beck uses the "theology," the end-times apocolyptics, and even in his next book The Christmas Sweater which, interestingly is surprisingly like a book with a nearly identical cover by another Mormon novelist. Finally, the author points out that Beck converted to that faith in order to develop a relationship with his now wife.

One chapter of the book is dedicated to Beck's advocacy of right wing extremist Cleon Skousen. Skousen had written The Five Thousand Year Leap: 30 Year Anniversary Edition with Glenn Beck Foreword, which was so far off the wall that it sold almost nothing. Skousen was so extreme that even the conservative FBI, for whom he worked, while he blew his contribution to the bureau way out of proportion with what it really was, were scrutinizing Skousen for their own safety! Skousen had been sherriff of a community in Utah where he became such a zealous enforcer that the town's conservative Mormon mayor sacked him for acting like he would if he were a Soviet enforcer! Despite that dubious record, Beck endorsed the book and it started selling like crazy.

Another element I remember from the book was Beck's "defending" the Bush failures after Katrina. He complained of the Katrina victims' idiocy for not leaving when they knew the storm was coming. That people still defend him after that burst of insanity is a sign of Beck's dangerous level of degenerecy.

I'd taken nearly 6 pages of notes from my higlights of the book today. But it's painful to go through it again. A couple of things come to mind. First, as much as Beck claims to "stand by the troops" and proclaim his undying patriotism, Beck wouldn't have the guts fo fight his way out of a bridge club. (I'm always amazed at those who purport to be tough who haven't so much as served coffee, and still have followers who defend them!)

Next, as I've pointed out, Beck continues to get more outrageous. A few months ago, while brandishing the hammer and sickle in one hand and the Nazi swastika in the other, he decried "social justice" as a diabolical plot. That even got some former supporters to reject his absurdity.

Then he had is "rally" in Washington, which a friend called "Whitestock," on the anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. As Zaitchik points out, Beck would have decried everything King stood for!

But, despite the hopeless contradictions, the absurdity, the hate rhetoric that can't be rationalized as anything else, his followers continue to defend him.

At the same time, I'm NOT of the school who says Beck is insane. On the contary, I think he's shrewd. (Note, I didn't say "intelligent.") He manipulates his followers who have mistaken that he has a medium for his having some idea of what he's talking about. So many of his followers are the ones who are of dubious integrity--as we learned over the last month when one of his disciples was headed west to do away with some of Beck's alleged enemies. And for that reason more of us need to know of Beck, and we need to teach others to avoid such demagoguery.

Interesting too that many of Beck's disciples defend him based on his relative "success." That too is a symptom of mythology of which his fans are not conscious...and I'm curious why they don't suggest that maybe Mr. Obama isn't a product of the same "success."

If I had the hide, I could have gone into more detail. Get into it yourself. Learn of Beck, his comical ignorance, yet his talent for manipulation for his own pocketbook. And yes, there are many conservatives--some of whom I know very well--who've rejected Beck for the same reasons I point out, and because he makes "conservatives" look like they could use some serious psychiatric help.

Outright wrongly picks on Mr. Beck
On page 99 he talks badly of Mr. Beck for calling Iraqi War protester Cindy Sheehan a prostitute! This author never explained that it is because Sheehan advocated making prostitutuion perfectly legal! Google article "Cindy Sheehan comes out for decriminalization of prostiutution"!

Soros-Funded Hatchet Job
You can't judge a book by the cover, as the old saying goes (although the image on the cover is revealing insofar as it hints at the censorious, authoritarian character of the average Obama supporter and his/her desire to silence or suppress all dissent). But you can certainly get an indication of the worth of any given nonfiction book by looking closely at its index, which is the first place I went to after picking up _Common Nonsense_. And the reason I give this book a one-star rating is because hardly any of the subjects or persons which Beck regularly addresses on his show are indexed. Which is to say, in short, that this is an elaborate straw-man argument which attacks an artifically constructed "Glenn Beck" of paranoid leftist fantasy rather than the actual arguments the real Beck puts forth on the program. It is also, I was able to glean, an ad hominem attack which dwells at length on Beck's past of alcoholic excess and moral turpitude. Gee, wonder why the current president's past alcohol, cocaine and marijuana usage (brazenly chronicled in _Dreams From My Father_) doesn't merit the same amount of attention?

I'll be the first to say that some of Beck's historical analogies seem, at times, strained, and that some of his mawkish histrionics are enough to make me cringe. But how can we take this book as a serious critique of his arguments when those arguments are not even addressed?

It is inexplicable that the following persons are not indexed in the book:

-Cass Sunstein
-John Holdren
-William Ayers
-Andy Stern
-Frances Fox Piven
-Jim Wallis
-Saul Alinsky

These people, who are either administration czars/cabinet members or known influences on Obama, are the regular targets on Beck's show. So how is it that Cass Sunstein, whom Beck regularly describes as "the most dangerous man in America," is not even mentioned ONCE in this book?

Neither does the book address the main thrust of the program, which Beck hammers away at week after week--the argument that modern liberalism is not really liberalism in the classical sense, but an offshoot of the quasi-fascistic, soft-totalitarian Progressivism which dates back to the era of Woodrow Wilson. The show presents a rather engaging revisionist look at the history of statism in the American political tradition: Wilson's presidency, FDR's New Deal, and LBJ's Great Society are re-examined via new critical perspectives which are refreshingly free of high-school history book bromides. Beck's narrative, culminating in our present crisis, is one of steadily growing government, accompanied by increasing dependence on the state, and, as a result, the gradual loss of cherished personal freedoms.

One wonders why a late afternoon/early evening television show which often features distinguished historians and other academics, covers everything from U.S. labor history to the Federalist Papers (as well as the larger debates over the Constitution during the early years of the Republic) to the history of twentieth-century Progressivism, and discusses critical issues in historiography is dubbed "the triumph of ignorance." That title is indicative of the Orwellian situation in which we find ourselves at this moment. For all its shortcomings, Beck's show has caused an incredible upsurge of interest in the Constitution, the Founders, and U.S. history in general. What other daytime show has working-class people rushing out to libraries and bookstores tracking down our founding documents as well as books like Richard Hofstadter's _Age of Reform_, Saul Alinsky's _Rules for Radicals_, Walter Lippman's _The Phantom Public_, Herbert Croly's _The Promise of American Life_, or F.A. Hayek's _The Road to Serfdom_?

"Don't take my word for it," Beck says repeatedly, "go to the original sources and judge for yourself." It's really hard to see how a television show which urges people to go out and read difficult books can be described as the apotheosis of the meathead mentality.

Perhaps in seeking a representative example of "the triumph of ignorance" in our debased popular culture, one would do better to consult with the hysterical know-nothing blabbermouths on _The View_. Or one of those mindless "reality" shows on MTV, invariably popular with young Obama drones.

But the more important question is this: Why does virtually none of the substance of Beck's program appear in _Common Nonsense_? You would think that a book-length critique would focus on that which serves as the organizing principle of the target's argument. But then again, facts don't really matter to party hacks who churn out Soros-funded hit jobs on critics of this administration's disastrous policies.

Perhaps, after all, the absence is indeed easily explicable. For discussing the program's revisionist examination of history or analyzing Beck's take on the significance of people like Sunstein and Alinsky would necessitate actually dealing with substantive arguments and cold, hard facts. Not a winning proposition for the author.

At one point, Zaitchik, predictably, references the classic Elia Kazan film _A Face in the Crowd_ (about a drunken buffoon named Lonesome Rhodes--played brilliantly by Andy Griffith--who rises to prominence as an entertainer, striking "friend of the common man" poses while espousing cynical, misanthropic views of his fans) as a way of establishing a historical precedent for the Beck phenomenon. Ah, how clever. But interestingly enough, I watched _A Face in the Crowd_ again recently and was struck by a particular scene toward the end of the film, in which a a sleazy political campaign manager, who wants to use Lonesome as a means of reaching the widest possible audience, tries to give him a quick tutorial in sloganeering. As to how the brilliant political elite should talk down to the great unwashed, benighted, ignorant and easily manipulated masses, the campaign manager says:

"Just give 'em a simple slogan, like 'change.'"

Hmmm . . . now THAT sounds familiar.

Another good Beck product
This book was helpful in reinforcing the basics of CBT and how to use them in dealing with challenging patients.

Challenging Problems Cured by Cognitive Therapy?
I have many books on cognitive therapy.I had to purchase this one for a certificate program I attended.I did not find this book to be very helpful in that more basic books on the subject cover techniques much clearer and more comprehensively.

Easy to read
Basic material on treating dysfunctional people. I am not a psychologist, but found it useful in developing sales techniques.

Challenging problems
I really liked this book written by one of the best known cognitive therapists in the country.. . .perhaps only her father is a better known cognitive therapist. It is very beneficial to read how Dr. J. Beck approaches challenging problems that arise during therapy.The case examples she gives can give a therapist insight into haow a master therapist works.

Although I liked virtually everything in the book, I particularly liked the chapter on dealing with problems that patients with axis II disorders present.The author also identifies some typical therapist reactions to the challenging problems that some clients exhibit.

I will kepp this book as a reference for a very long time

Can't wait for next installment
I bought this book for the sex but was suprised to have enjoyed the story.I liked the characters and can't wait for the next installment in what I hope will be a series.
The relationship is consentual dom/sub where the sub finds strength from this relationship.

LOVED this book
I loved this book.It had just the right mix of BDSM and tenderness from Keith towards Serena.The characters were well developed and the dialogue was fresh and crisp.I loved the parallel stories of Claire and Paul and David; Grant and Francine; Debbie; and Penny.Can't wait for Grant and Francine's story which I understand has already been contracted.Hopefully, this will turn out to be a multi-book series.

I have never read a book by Abby Gordon. But I am now hooked on her. I look forward to her books to come!

Fast paced steamy office romance!
So, first I should say I really liked this book. The author does a good job of creating believable characters that are easy to follow along with. She could have provided a bit more background detail on each of the main characters, but there was enough there to make the reader feel involved in the story. The romance was somewhat believable...and the scenes were explicit and steamy.

I guess what made this a 4 rather than a 5 star book were a few things. It moved from fantasy to reality a bit too fast, and the characters, at least Kevin, moved from fantasy to love a bit too fast for me to be believable. If it could have been spread out a bit more, I think it would have been better. Also, There are a lot of unanswered questions at the end of the book, and side stories that are started but remain unresolved. I tried to look up the author to see if this was the start to a series, or what...but I found nothing. So, that leaves things a bit unsettled. If there were another book to follow this, I would read it.

All in all it was good...worth the read.

It's not bad, but it wasn't great
I waffled between 2 and 3 stars for this book through the whole thing. The mystery master was a bit much.I could believe it for over the phone, but in person?A lot of the characters in the book were around each other a lot, known each other for years, and acted like they were total and completely brand new strangers to each other.The language use was too formal at times for the characters and to me felt a little stiff.The plot had a lot of holes in it and ends were either glossed over or too quickly tied up.Basically every time I thought I started to get into it something would jar me out of the flow. Very easy and educational
From the originator of the practice, this is an easy book to understand, and had some very helpful tools in it, especially if you are already proactive with therapy.

We found this book to be very helpful when working with our adopted Son with emotional and mental health issues. It helped us to see things in a better light and to understand why he does some of the things he does.

Good Stuff!
Having heard about "cognitive therapy" and how successful it can be, I recently decided to order this book from Amazon in hope of learning more about this widely recognized and demonstrated psychotherapeutic model and approach.I am really glad that I did, as I can honestly say, sans all exaggeration, that thoughtfully perusing this book from the late 1970s has probably helped me more than reading/studying any book on psychology or "self help" has helped me in many years.While contemplating some of the logical insights this book contains, I found myself, almost unintentionally, rather quickly identifying and correcting a few of my own erroneous "automatic thoughts" and thereby adroitly overcoming a major acute irrational neurotic/phobic fear that, quite frankly, had personally haunted me for decades, apparently as a result of some repeated direct exposure to major trauma when I was younger and subsequent hysteric "somatic imaging".

Otherwise, I am pleased to report that this book is quite understandable, even though it is in no way"dummied down".While the narrative contains a few technical terms and occasional "big words", I think that, overall, this book is quite accessible, informative, and even "common sensical" for an intelligent/educated layperson.The reader does not have to be a trained mental health professional to benefit significantly from reading this book or to comprehend the information that it contains.

Reading Cognitive Therapy for a book report, I found myself boggled down with heavy...almost convoluted terminology.The book could have been written lighter, andyet not miss the meaning nor the purpose of writing it. resource manual for nursing Research
I bought this manual hoping to help me in a graduate level course on Scientific Inquiry. I did not find that it was particularly helpful in preparing for my tests and quizzes. I am hoping that the different forms that are included might help me as I prepare to do my own scholarly project next semester.

Required for MSN quantitative research class. Each chapter has big crossword (we don't do ) plus lots of questions applying to the chapter or examples given. Lots of studies in the appendices that questions are based on. Many sections also have answers to application questions in the back. Haven't used CD yet. Didn't give me anything new or useful, but might be useful for some
I didn't really get anything from this that I didn't already know, though based on reviews it seems to be useful for some people.It provided lots of samples of phrases to use to "talk back" to one's habitual thoughts that tend to undermine healthy eating, so if you're not good at coming up with those internal replies you might find it helpful.But it did NOT "train your brain to think like a thin person" as advertised in the title.That takes more of an inside-out, transformative shift in perspectives that was not accomplished, or even approached here.Her approach is too formulaic to get there.For that kind of fundamental shift in thinking and perspective I would recommend instead the work of the other Beck - Martha Beck's "Four Day Win" (and other works).

The Beck Diet Solution audio book was further undermined by the reading.The actor lacked any sense of genuineness or connection to the material so her delivery felt insincere and left me feeling almost patronized by the performance.Judith Beck's own voice on the introduction was far more sincere and connected, and this audio book would have been improved had she read the entire thing.

Mind altering
The CD did what I expected it to do. It started to change my mind about what my problem was. My thinking was the problem. I was the saboteur. As I listened more and more it changed the way I thought. If I want to be thin I need to think like a thin person and Judith Becks program helps you do just that.

CD or Book?
I am "sold" on this information.
However I can't decide to get the book or CD.
Any suggestions?

I felt like the author repeated her steps a lot in this audio CD and repeated a lot of her words, but she has a well thought out plan for dieting and losing weight as there is a sysem that she has devised for people to follow and there is a lot of work involved.I decided to put off listening to it until later when I had more time to study her system and plan.

CD lacks ability to get to PDF files
I have the CD. However, no matter what I do I cannot access the PDF files!

Emotional, inspirational, and invokes self reflection
Loved this book, it was the first book I downloaded on my Kindle the day after Christmas.I read the whole thing on our trip home from my parents, crying a lot of the time.It really makes you think about how you are raising your children and what their life would be like without you to guide them - just like our lives would be without Christ to guide us.

Great story!I had borrowed the book, read it, but wanted my own copy.A timeless story that has meaning beyond the holiday season setting.Readers of all ages will find value in the message. The condition of the book was just as described, at a good price, and shipped in a reasonable time.What more could I ask?!

The Christmas Sweater
Reminded me of the Christmas Story movie. all seen through the eyes of a child.A very unique storyline with a twist.

Engaging, short, but just ok for me...
I am a fan of Glenn Beck and did preview this book on Kindle before reading.The prose and story is engaging enough but somewhere about 1/2 way through I lost interest in the main character's struggle and exactly what was going on between him and his grandparents.The dialogue just wasn't there.It all went on a little too long, was too dramatic and the symbolism was a little too much for me.The ending was a nice suprise though.The book was a quick read...maybe 2 hours?Not sure I'd want to spend $9.99 for a two hour read again.
