Horrible Editing
This book suffers from shameful editing. I should say NO EDITING. What this POD publisher did was download the text from an online source, set the text in garamond, and then they printed it sans proper footnote placement, sans the musical notations, sans any sense of attractive page design. Coffee table book on Beethoven and his music
This is a coffee table book, put out by the recording company Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft (DGG), commemorating the bicentennial of Beethoven's birth (it was publihed in 1972, but 1970 represents the 200 year anniversary). The book is heavily illustrated, including samples of Beethoven's scores for his music.

The book begins with an essay on the life of Beethoven (written by Joseph Schmidt-Gorg). This includes the text (in English) of the Heiligenstadt Testament, filled with a sort of stoic resignation, with his deafness increasing. Following are chapters on his symphonies, concertos, chamber music with wind instruments, piano trios and quartets, his one opera (Fidelio), music for the stage, miscellanous vocal works, and so on.

The book closes with a chapter on Beethoven's character and way of life (fascinating reading). At the end is a bibliography, indexes, a discography of key DGG versions of Beethoven's works (e.g., von Karajan's set of all nine symphonies is selected), and a list of the composer's works.

Beautiful Collectable Edition
If you have a classical music library and appreciate fine books (especially vintage and Beethoven), then this beautiful staturesque edition would be a great acquisition.I came across a copy at our library and was most impressed with it.It is a very large format with brilliant, full-color pictures of historic places, rare instruments, Beethoven's circle of friends and many photos of Beethoven's original scores.You will find many unique, "niche" things in this magnificant book that are not in other books.In addition to chapters on Beethoven's lifestyle and character, the bulk of the chapters are broken down into the various genres of Beethoven's output: symphony, concerto, quartets, trios, duos, sonatas, vocal, sacred, and of course his one-and-only opera.Such a format conveniently lends itself to the contextual study of one's favorite works, which I really enjoyed.What most impressed me too was the superbly written essays on each - rich in style and substance, musical history, and compelling accounts full of many fascinating ancedotes.So, this is really a beautiful and valuable book to grace one's coffee table that will never go out of style or relevance in spite of its 1970's publication date.And it has all the fine qualities that the most discriminating bibliophile will appreciate and admire. ...
