Product Description
"I'm not asking you to believe every conspiracy theory you'll find in this book. . . . I didn't write this book to give you all the answers. The Warren Commission did that, and the answers were all wrong. I wrote this book to inspire you to do what the powers that be wish you wouldn't:  to question authority . . . and to keep an eye out for Elvis."
--RICHARD BELZER

In UFOs, JFK, and Elvis, the distinguished statesman of stand-up comedy tackles some of the biggest conspiracies and cover-ups this side of Roswell. Just what is it that they don't want you to know about the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Area 51, and what the American astronauts really found on the moon? The unexplained crash at Roswell and the mysterious "face" on Mars? The link between the Nazis and the U.S. space program? Evidence of extraterrestrial experimentation?

Finally, one lone "nut" exposes the conspiracy to keep conspiracies a dirty little secret, standing up to the shadowy forces that would have us believe that Oswald acted alone, those lights in the sky are weather balloons, and fluoridated water is good for you (yeah, right). "Some of the smartest people I know . . . find it easier--and certainly more comforting--to believe that America is the only country on earth with no conspiracies at all." Just remember: do not ask on whom The Belz has told--he's told on them.Amazon.com Review
Best known as Detective John Munch on the hit TV series Homicide, Richard Belzer is also an accomplished standup comedian with a knack for political commentary in the tradition of Mort Sahl and Dick Gregory. In UFOs, JFK, and Elvis, he applies his analytic powers to two of the most controversial topics of the late 20th century: the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963 and the alleged U.S. government cover-up of the existence of alien life. (The reference in the title is the book's only substantial Elvis sighting.)

Belzer sensibly avoids pretending to have the answers, opting instead to focus on the questions themselves. Why does the Zapruder film fail to synchronize with other footage of the Kennedy shooting? What's the real background on Lee Harvey Oswald--and who really posed for that famous backyard photo? Did NASA regularly suppress UFO sightings by Apollo and Gemini astronauts? And how about that giant face on the surface of Mars? While Belzer's sarcastic, antiauthoritarian tone may not convince you that aliens walk among us, it's rather difficult by book's end to fully dismiss his belief that "history is just a collection of accepted lies" told to keep the masses in line. --Ron Hogan ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, but...
I listened to this book while laying ceramic tile and I really enjoyed it, he makes a very convincing case concerning J.F.K. The problem is I know little, I was not a eyewitness of the assassination and I don't have access to the sources or the "facts". But if the "facts" he presents are indeed just that, facts... well, then the J.F.K conspiracy theory has merit.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS AS IMPORTANT AS '1984' & 'IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE'
Mr. Belzer uses a very effective blend of incisive analysis, entertaining prose, and his own wit to write an incredibly powerful book! All concerned American citizen (and a Federal employee who's seen the usual government lies) I would say this book should be required reading for every high school civics class.I'm sure 30 years ago my civics teacher would have required us to read Mr. Belzer's book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Effort from the Belz
If you're a fan of Richard Belzer, or of conspiracy theories, you'll get a real dose of reaffirmation from this book. It's an onslaught of information very cleverly delivered....heavy on facts and wit.

5-0 out of 5 stars UFOs, JFK, and Elvis:Conspiracies You Don't Have to Be Crazy to Believe
Read it...You will say as you read, I knew it, I knew it, I knew it...The Elvis part threw me off, but after reading that part I got it. If you are a Conspiracy Theory buff, you will enjoy reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for anybody with a brain and a desire to use it!
Richard Belzer's book gives multiple theories and proof for them and does so in a highly humuorous way that appeals to any intelligent reader.Belzer's relaxed yet intellectual style of writing sets him apart from most other conspiracy writers and the quality of the writing makes this book a great and informative read. ... Product Description
RICHARD BELZER plays the acerbic Detective John Munch on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. He has made television history by portraying Detective Munch in ten different television series, including Homicide, The Wire, and Arrested Development. A veteran stand-up comic, actor, and talk-show host, he is the author of I Am Not a Cop!, UFOs, JFK, and Elvis, and coauthor of How to Be a Stand-Up Comic. He divides his time between France and New York City.

Comedy legend Johnny Leland has called in his chips. He’s organizing a charity telethon and needs TV cop Richard Belzer to cohost. Not one to let down an old friend—much less the guy who gave him his start in stand-up comedy—The Belz gets ready to head out to Las Vegas when he receives a mysterious phone call from Paul Venchus, a newspaper colleague from way back. Twenty-six years ago, beautiful starlet Bridget Burgeon was found dead in her Hollywood apartment. Sleeping pills, the coroner ruled, but many questioned whether her relationship with handsome, up-and-coming California congressman Mark Kaye played a role. Conspiracy theorists have been working overtime ever since, and Venchus claims that he has made a breakthrough in the case. A well-known conspiracy theorist himself, The Belz can’t resist hearing him out and agrees to meet. Then Venchus turns up dead, and a wacky, self-proclaimed female psychic shows up at Belzer’s hotel in Vegas insisting that he continue their investigation. Relying on his TV cop know-how and celebrity status, they begin to piece together a series of mysterious deaths that, while rooted a quarter of a century in the past, present some very real dangers in the present. As the bodies start piling up, Belzer finds a legendary hit man hot on his trail and must utilize all of his talents not only to pull off a successful telethon but to solve one of our history’s most scandalous conspiracies before his Vegas stint becomes his closing act. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars RICK "SHAQ" GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "I AM NOT AS AMUSED WITH THE SECOND BOOK."
Richard Belzer is back with a follow up to his "I AM NOT A COP" mystery novel which plays on the "Hey it's me!... A real life actor in "LAW AND ORDER SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT!"... but "wink-wink" the crime thriller I'm involved in is fiction. The uniqueness of the first novel has worn off... so the author needs to come up with a compelling story and characters that are strong enough to be able to stand on its own merits. Unfortunately the new story is not gripping nor unique enough. "Belz" is contacted out of the blue by an old friend Paul Venchus who he hasn't heard from in a quarter-of-a-century. Paul is a lush who says he has info that can solve a famous Hollywood murder case from twenty-six years ago. As the reader is made aware of the fictitious characters involved in this long ago "conspiratorial" murder... there is not even a hint of intrigue. Belzer is on his way to Vegas to help out his "mentor and best friend" Johnny Leland run an annual charity telethon. (Sound familiar... in Vegas... for charity?) If the lack of creativity here isn't enough for you... add on the fact that Johnny Leland used to be one-half of the hottest Hollywood entertainment duo twenty-five years ago. Johnny was a comedian and his partner Sal Fabell was a hard drinking... handsome Italian singer. Johnny and Sal split up and haven't talked in... you guessed it... twenty-five-years. So while everyone Belzer talks to regarding the decrepitly old non-titillating murder case... becomes murder victims themselves... he also arranges a tear-jerking telethon reunion between Johnny and Sal. (How about a little more creativity regarding Dean Martin-Jerry Lewis-Vegas-telethon?)

Added to the mix is the title "character"... a totally boring... self-proclaimed... run of the mill (supposed) psychic... who was Paul's girlfriend and also related to one of the long ago murder cast of characters. With all the possibilities the author has at his disposal such as unlimited real-life names for cameos... and nothing but his imagination to limit his choice of a unique crime subject... this story comes up awful short.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read!
This adventure behind the scene in Vegas was great fun. I'm looking forward to the next collaboration from Black & Belzer....they get better each time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even More Exciting Than Their First Novel!
On page 113 of the most recent collaboration between comedian-actor Richard Belzer and crime novelist-cop Michael Black, it's written, "Sometimes cops can make pretty good writers." When it comes to their second novel together, this is an incredible understatement.

Belz is at it again as a suitably smart-assed self-insert in his own fiction, a character in his tale of conspiracies akin to Marilyn Monroe and the Kennedy era, in which an old acquaintance, Paul Venchus, (who used to be a fellow journalist) is killed when he gets a little too close to the truth. Paul's girlfriend, Veronica Holmes, a self-proclaimed psychic, contacts Belz by cellphone and the mystery begins. Hesitant at first, Belzer warms to the need for his investigative skills as the fog surrounding the death of Brigid Burgeon (read: Monroe) ostensibly at the hands of the Kaye (read: Kennedy) clan, when word has it Venchus was on to something big. There's plenty of grist for the conspiracy mill, as you can imagine.

The action intertwines with Belz's need to help an old friend, his comedy mentor and idol, Johnny Leland (think Jerry Lewis here, folks) do a charity telethon. There's a lot more to producing a telethon than you may realize, which brings many other memorable and fully-developed characters into the fray. Belz walks the fine line between investigating a mystery growing deeper every moment, with bodies stacking up precariously, while giving as much help to Leland as he can muster.

There's even a Sal Fabell/Johnny Leland reunion to rival that of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. You'll still enjoy this book, even if you're too young to remember all these historical similarities.

Veronica, the loose cannon who seems glued to Belz's side, undergoes a Pygmalion-like transformation through the course of the crimes, but whether or not psychic abilities come into play, I'll let you decide.

Everything transpires in a credible, action-oriented manner, which will keep you turning pages until the very end. The ending itself will have you asking aloud, "How's Belzer going to get himself out of life-threatening trouble THIS time?" (And whether or not his gorgeous wife, Harlee McBride, will have to "come out there." It's great to see her included in this novel!) It's a thriller of an ending, so don't cheat yourself by sneaking a look at it early on. (Yes, I know you're tempted, but trust me on this one.)

All of this happens by way of the Belzer & Black co-authorship, which is even more seamless and polished this time. Those familiar with Michael Black's writing style will recognize his prose, but so many of the details are pure Belz at his best. I can't say enough good things about this one, because it's even better than their first offering, "I Am Not a Cop."

If there's a conspiracy in your town, you'll undoubtedly want Belzer on your side. In the meantime, I'm crossing my fingers there will be many more collaborations between Belzer & Black - maybe next time they'll set one in Atlantic City.

Perhaps one day Belz will actually get to see one of those MMA bouts he keeps missing.

1-0 out of 5 stars I want my hour and 90 cents back Belzer!
I bought this book used on Amazon.com and paid [...]for it. I thought; "what a great deal!". It was a total scam. It's NOT informative, helpful or even funny. I found myself wondering; "Was he drunk when he wrote this?". The only good thing about the book is that it can be read in about an hour then used to start a nice cozy fire on a cold winter day when the power is out and there is nothing better to do. Great! I've just wasted another thirty seconds writing a review. I really didn't even want to give it one star, but there is no zero star rating. I feel as though Belzer should issue a public apology to his fans for insulting us.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's with the bad reviews?
I'm serious about that. This isn't a stand-up routine. When I was in eighth grade, I did a project on how to be a stand-up comedian, and of all of the books that I used for research, this was the one that I used the most. The others were a bit... well... boring.I thought stand-up comedy was supposed to be entertaining, and the other books weren't.I could have just read straight through this book in one sitting, but I was supposed to look through several books.

The truth is that this book is really a stand-up comedy routine on how to be a stand-up comedian. As another review mentioned, there is very little text in it, and mostly pictures, but the text was very useful for me.Some of the pictures were helpful. There are a lot of jokes in it, but that's a good thing.Another review commented on the profanity, but that's something that sells.A lot of comedians do it.It really is an informative book, and I can't believe that it's not as easy to find.

I might be the only person that was helped by it, but it might help you even more.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed
I was disappointed at all the four letter words, vulgarity and the mention of one night stands while he ismarried.I felt it was also degrading to women.I love Richard Belzer as an actor but as a writer I was disappointed in the book.Does he want his two daughters to read his book?

3-0 out of 5 stars You'd expect more from a man with only one testicle.
First of all, I had a terribly hard time locating this book... For good reason it turns out.Although published in 1988, 'How To Be a Stand Up Comic' appears to be a remainder from an earlier, long forgotten era. Shoddy production value, crappy packaging and all together amateur layoutsdo little to improve this book's allure - once opened it can be read in asingle bowel-movement.Not to say that this book is entirelydisappointing, it isn't.Richard Belzer is a master of his craft.Being aStand Up Comic.Writing and assembling a book which captures hiscelebrated, irreverent wit proves daunting.Entirely devoid of substancethis 208 page collection of cheap, grainy B&W photos masquerades as a`book,' containing no more than 6 pages of text. What fills up theremaining 202 pages are a serious of poor-quality black and whitephotographs of `The Belz' in a series of `comedic' skits.Whereas thesepictures could ideally have served to coincide and reinforce the text,Belzer uses them as a way to replace his written word leaving the `reader'cheated. This is basically a scrappy attempt at a half-hearted andentirely unrealized premise.Rarely do you see a talent such as RichardBelzer's so blatantly betrayed. I anxiously await the publication of hisnext work `Conspiracies You Don't Have To Be Crazy To Believe' which willhopefully ameliorate my current feeling of betrayal.

2-0 out of 5 stars You won't learn how to be a stand up comic reading this book
While reading this book is mildly amusing, you will not learn how to construct a joke or bring out your funny side by reading it. In short you won't learn much about "how to be a stand up comedian". I was disappointed because I do think Belz is a funny guy. I just didn't think the book was very instructive. ... Read more

IN THIS CAPTIVATING, OFTEN HILARIOUS DEBUT MYSTERY, ONE OF THE GREAT COMEDIANS OF OUR TIME BLENDS FACT WITH FICTION, AS LAW & ORDER: SVU'S RICHARD BELZER'S OFF-CAMERA PERSONA COMES TO LIFE ON THE PAGE, EMPLOYING INVESTIGATIVE KNOW-HOW AND COMEDIC TIMING IN EQUAL MEASURE TO SOLVE THE MYSTERY SURROUNDING THE DISAPPEARANCE OF A TRUSTED FRIEND.

When Richard Belzer meets Rudy Markovich, nyc medical examiner, for dinner in Brighton Beach, he has little reason to expect anything more than a friendly bull session. But in the next twenty-four hours Belzer finds himself in the middle of a vicious street brawl, splashed across the tabloid headlines as an out-of-control celeb, and fearing for the life of his good pal Rudy -- who police assume is sleeping at the bottom of the East River.

As Belzer finds himself increasingly required to call upon the resources he taps to portray Detective Munch on nbc, he maintains his sense of humor and carries us along on a rollicking ride through the underworld of New York City. With Rudy kidnapped, or worse, it falls to The Belz to track him down and solve the riddle to the vanishing act.

The lives of Detective Munch and Richard Belzer collide and mesh in I Am Not a Cop! as one of America's great comics and TV cops brings all of his talents to bear in book form and provides a triumph of the mystery genre. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good read, but not a great book
"I Am Not a Cop!" was a good read, a bit of a light read with many literary and movie references. However, it was not up to par with Belzer's previous book "UFOs, JFK, and Elvis: Conspiracies You Can Believe In", though it was enjoyable reading. It's clear that Belzer is not an experienced mystery writer, though he proves he is knowledgeable in many other areas. The plot was interesting but slow-moving.The plot was a hackneyed, and the ending was a bit of a stretch, delving a little too far into Belzer's conspiracy-filled mind and too far outside of the detective/mystery genre. However, that should not stop you from reading this book at least once.If you're just looking for a little light reading, this book will be both satisfying and enjoyable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Light Reading
From my blog review:[...]

Entertainment concepts seem to evolve over the course of a decade, and as the reality experiment has begun to yield the floor it appears that a hybrid sub-genre of "reality fiction" is emerging. In film, we've had My Name Is Bruce [Blu-ray] and in literature, "I Am Not a Cop!"Richard Belzer has crafted a fictitious tale in which he, as himself, is caught up in a mystery involving a missing medical examiner friend who happens to be Russian. (Or is he Ukrainian?)

Fans of The Belz know from his stand-up routine and previous work of non-fiction (UFOs, JFK, and Elvis: Conspiracies You Don't Have to Be Crazy to Believe) that this is a guy who does his homework when it comes to intricate plots, and he has spun a doozy here. Elements of the plot draw heavily from the history and politics of Russia and the former Soviet states; you don't need to do your own homework, though, because Belzer has made sure that all the information you need to know is presented in an accessible manner throughout this novel.

I have long been an avid, yet admittedly slow, reader and so it is rare that I read anything cover-to-cover in one setting; "I Am Not a Cop!" has earned a spot on that short list. Despite Belzer's years of portraying television's most ubiquitous character, Detective John Munch, "I Am Not a Cop!" is much more a literary descendant of crime noir novels. Not only does Belzer admit as much in his epilogue, but there are frequent references to (and quotes from) them sprinkled throughout the narrative. From start to finish, though, the sarcastic wit of Belzer permeates "I Am Not a Cop!" and I found myself easily envisioning him in character during many passages.

At 272 pages, this is a novel that harkens back to the days of page-turning paperback thrillers meant to be read during a train commute; the kind that Ian Fleming insisted his James Bond stories were. Despite--or perhaps, because of--this, there is one chief complaint I would register with the author. All too often, a turn of phrase is recycled to the point that it becomes distracting. The most glaring culprit is a variation of, "[famous person] would be proud." Saying that these moments took me "out of the book" would be taking it too far--especially given the nature of its premise. Still, they're the kind of thing that one expects an editor to catch and ask the author, "Can we phrase this differently? You used the same expression thirteen pages ago."

Fans of the series in which "Detective Munch" has appeared should not expect any name-dropping or behind-the-scenes glimpses into their production. Despite the fact that Belzer's investigation occurs during an eight day shoot, the actual series and its elements are ambiguous. The only direct allusions are to Mariska Hargitay, in both of which the promise of an autographed photo of her is bartered for cooperation.

While "I Am Not a Cop!" may not be the definitive mystery story of our times, it is fun throughout and sustained by its plot, steeped as it is in real life situations. I cannot guage how a reader unfamiliar with Belzer would enjoy this novel; many of his personality traits and views can be alienating at times (for instance, in 2008, was it really necessary to have five different lines to remind us that he dislikes George W. Bush?). An audiobook reading would be welcomed, though one has not been issued to date.

4-0 out of 5 stars Unique and Entertaining Mystery
The novel, I Am Not a Cop by Richard Belzer was a pleasure to read. In real life, Belzer plays Detective John Munch on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. This story is unique because he also plays the lead as Richard Belzer in a storyline that finds him searching for his missing friend while dealing with criminals including the Russkies and their involvement in the blood diamond trade.

Belzer writes the book from his point of view as he deals with long hours on the set playing Munch, an assistant assigned to keep an eye on him, numerous friends and contacts, and the occasional bad guy who interrupts his day.

Belzer writes with great humor and his side comments and similes are often LOL funny. I found this book a surprisingly worthwhile read.

I Am Not a Cop!: A Novel

3-0 out of 5 stars I Am Not A Cop!
Richard Belzer portrays himself in his novel "I Am Not A Cop" which I thought was a fascinating device. He writes well (there was some witty parts) and it felt like I was there in between film shoots (he plays a cop on TV) watching him try to solve a case he shouldn't have been mingling in. Other than that, it was okay. No real mystery, just a fun read.

3-0 out of 5 stars JUST OK, NOT GREAT FICTION
Because it was Belz, I bought the book and dove into it with enthusiasm and definite purpose ofbringing the author to life. He's a very talented man and a good actor, but the mystery genre is not his gig. I enjoyed some of his witty remarks and his references to his movie and TV work. It's really difficult for me to picture him as a tough guy, or a martial arts expert that can take out villains. Words and intelligence are his forte but not being a hard-boiled, fearless dude of the streets, taking on criminals and protecting helpless females.Took me four starts and 4-5 wines before I was able to fInish it...but I did.Enough said. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars They STAY hilarious.I wore out the last set!
I was making an all night drive down I-40 and I was sleepy when I started. I stopped at a truckstop in Little Rock and found these, or who knows, maybe God led me to them cause they kept me wide awake all night long. You'll never buy this many of your own chuckles, peels of laughter, and gallons of giggles for this little money - EVER - again in your whole life. That makes this tape set the best deal on the net.

I'm buying a new set for myself and several sets for christmas gifts. But let me warn you, don't ever give out a tape from your own set because no one ever returns them!

5-0 out of 5 stars FIND THESE TAPES!
If you need to laugh, and who doesn't(?) get these tapes! They are too funny to describe here - just trust me on this. You'll feel better in the morning if you take two of these before bed!

5-0 out of 5 stars You won't be disappointed!
This stuff is hilarious!I don't know how they do it.John Pinette at the buffet and his hottest day of the year in the amusement and water park are some of the funniest things I've ever heard, and each tape is somehow better than the previous one, Brian Regan, Pablo Francisco, Richard Jeni - just thinking of them makes me want to listen again.I laughed so hard I cried.I needed that.Don't miss this set.Beg, borrow, (well, don't steal), but get them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Journal Spoof.
Good fun read. Short, Probably a collectible someday, maybe. We'll keep our copy safely preserved, tucked away.

2-0 out of 5 stars Below Onion Standards
Rather a disappointment. Not especially creative. It takes too many obvious shots and does not tickle your risibilities.

2-0 out of 5 stars not quite
Not quite juvenile enough to be really funny, nor was it sophisticated enough to rise above the obvious.I expected more for Hendra.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well-deserved
My Wall Street Journal Satire is never out of fashion in a democracy- in fact the more a democracy is threatened by lopsided-ness to any one view, the more reason to embrace this defensive weapon. 'My WSJ' does this pretty well.

4-0 out of 5 stars It ends too soon
This thing is hilarious but too short. I wish it was as big as the real WSJ so I could slip it into a stack of papers at the office and watch what happens.

Product Description

Every other Thursday on Santa Monica Boulevard’s Comedy Central Stage, a motley assortment of prolific Hollywood writers, actors, and comics convene to reveal the most personal—and colorful—parts of their lives. Their soul-baring monologues reveal the sources of their creative genius, from wacky families, to psycho exes, random ramblings, and unbelievable Hollywood insights.

This hilarious collection includes some of their best confessions. It provides an inside scoop on Hollywood, including stories on mishaps at the Emmys, writing for popular shows, being put in a sleeper hold by Hulk Hogan, growing up in famous families, and what it’s like to play Jan Brady.

Funny, embarrassing, or dirty (or a combination thereof), but always brutally honest, Dirty Laundry shines a voyeuristic light on the underbellies of the people who have sold their souls to the entertainment biz.

"Something magical happens twice a month…. It's an evening of dependably fun 'n' funny readings or writings by industry folks letting off whatever creative bursts they feel like."

4-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Laundry
The one problem I have with Dirty Laundry is it need to be abridged better. The stories are good, in the same vein as Fired. However, some of the soul-baring monologuesmay be great as text pieces in the book..I know they started out as theater monologues, but somehow it has gotten lost in the tandem narrators and print reproduction whentrying to read other people's words.

I would have enjoyed to have heard the audiotalents ofRichard Beltzer, Kelly Carlin-McCall,Taylor Negron, Jennifer Elise Cox, Amy Stiller and many others narrating their own words. When it comes toMaggie Rowe & Andersen Gabrych. It is hit or miss. Sometimes I feel they can not convey the author's words that they edited.

So is this a good audio production to get? It is still worth listening to. Like Fired, it will leave you with sense that people in the entertainment business are just as screwed up as you...and sometime worse than you

5-0 out of 5 stars "Hallelujah, It's Raining Spacemen!"
An interesting analysis of the warped world we live in. If you, like many others, wonder how "the President of the United States can die of a frontal wound inflicted by a sniper shooting from behind" then look no further. Belzer, probably known better for his stand up and roles on shows such as Homicide, is one of that dying breed - an actor who doesn't sound like a total baseless ninny even when examining odd topics.
Not that he doesn't enjoy his soapbox, mind you. With 118 pages on the JFK assassination and 92 on the alien phenomenon, he has quite some room to rant with his slightly acidic tone on the sheer stupidity and gall of those in a power to distort the media and keep witnesses under their thumb. I'm not normally into this sort of thing, but the sheer amount of evidence was amazing. Marvel at the various incarnations of the Zapruder film, JFK's dissapearing (and conflicting) autopsy records, how 77 actual witnesses to Kennedy's assassination died under mysterious circumstances after testimony, Lee Harvey Oswalds aplenty (long story), that pesky magic bullet, and yes, J Edgar Hoover (featured mostly under the section "I'm Strictly a She-Male G-Man"). Stand in awe of statements given by Reagan, Truman, George Bush, and other presidents and luminaries regarding actual extraterrestrial policy.
A call to question with an open mind and interpret openly, the book is a great warning for anyone. And for those that don't, Belzer has his own warning - "Elvis just might be showing up soon at a location near you." ... Read more

Product Description
In this text Mo Mowlam tells the story of her time in government in her own words. She writes about the months leading up to the 1997 General Election, Labour's landslide victory and what had gone on as she underwent treatment for a brain tumour while working towards that victory. She tells the inside story of her time as Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. The characters and chemistry of this time are analyzed with candour, warmth and humour that are Mo Mowlam's trademarks. After the Good Friday Agreement, Mo Mowlam was, somewhat controversially, moved to the Cabinet Office. Before the second landslide victory of 2001, Mo Mowlam decided to leave Westminister politics - this text tells readers why, and also tells of her hopes and plans for the future. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars There's a Rich Backstory Missing Here
I purchased this book via Bookcrow, an Amazon partner who shipped it rapidly. I received it in exactly the condition stated, which was also a plus.

My only disappointment is that it wasn't made clear Richard Belzer was the ghostwriter. Now, I have no problem with that, because I'm a big fan of his writing style, attention to detail and warmth; all of these things Mo Mowlam's story certainly required and deserved. For those looking for a clue to Belzer's involvement, you need only look at the back cover's clever nod to him.

What I had hoped for, in seeing both Belzer and Mowlam as co-authors, was some kind of backstory (even in an Introduction) giving us a brief account of how the two met, and why they decided to collaborate on this book. To those who only know Belzer for his comedy or his role as Det. John Munch on a host of TV shows, you may not be familiar with Belzer's political leanings. From a political standpoint, he is a fascinating figure in his own right, and I would have liked to have seen his take on Northern Ireland's politicians and plights in addition to Ms. Mowlam's.

Pushing my disappointment along those lines aside, I can tell you this is a wonderful book. It's well worth the read to get to know Ms. Mowlam and what her life was like during a pivotal time in history. This book would not have been nearly so incisive, so endearing, nor so detailed if it hadn't been written by these two caring intellectuals.

It leaves you feeling the absence of Ms. Mowlam, whose passing seemed far before her time. ... Read more
