5-0 out of 5 stars Charlie McCarthy's Sister
Candice Bergen became an actress because her father was famous. Edgar Bergen was a ventrioloquist who began in vaudeville, came into his own on the radio, and appeared on television. He came from the classic era of Hollywood and is a symbol of the era, but Candice grew up and captured fame in a new era. She examines the transition in her book and the impression her father had on her life.

As with many autobiographies, the portion about the author's childhood is often the best. Why? It is common to reflect on the good memories, so we are treated with stories about Edgar taking little Candy to see the vault with all of the different Charlie McCarthy bodies and heads, or memories about the extravagant birthday parties the celebrities of years past had for their children. There is even a tense flashback to a date Miss Bergen had with an older celebrity that ended being driven home in silence.

It is somewhat uncomfortable reading about how Candice had to grow up. This is not only because of the conflict between Candice and her parents, but also because of the turbulent time period. Bergen mingled with many famous minds of the 1960s, so the contrast between her peaceful childhood and the chaos of her young adult life is stark.

Bergen reflects on her life, often taking a harsh stance against her behavior at the time. She labels herself as a follower of the crowd, and a stubborn daughter. She also claims that she allowed herself to fall back on her beauty instead of maturing as a person. These reflections are in depth and sometimes refreshingly frank; they make it easy to like her.

The title of this book, Knock Wood, refers to the dummy that made the Bergens a famous family. Therefore, the story begins and ends with the impact this fame had on Candice's life. However, many years have passed since this book was published; it would be nice to see a follow up.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Quintessential American Sophisticate
Candice Bergen is a classy woman in a class of her own. Whether acting in a drama, comedy, TV or film, she is poised and warm. This 1984 autobiography chronicles her life as Hollywood royalty. Despite her glamorous upbringing Candice is down-to-earth and very much someone easy to like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Candicehas thatrare gift of poise and style for very few
Candice Bergen has always handled herself with style. She is very much her father's daughter. Both of whom had reserved mannerisms, had difficulty of expression; yet had great admiration of one another.
Her bearing and appearance indicates that she is a lady. She has always been a rugged individualist with a sense of humor that could make one blush, Candice has a little-seen side that the public isn't privy to.
As I read her autobiography, although she is of my mother's generation, and I younger. Despite her father's vocation, although he was very, very accomplished, he was conservative. Which, is how he raised his two children. Like my life, she grew up privy of privileged. Attending Westlake School for Girls in Bel Air at a time when it still had a boarding school, which was abandoned not long after she graduated. Yet with many changes long ago, propriety still matters there. She went east to college. To my great surprise experienced the same thing as I did not very long ago. She studied art history, and had a passion for photography. She is infinitely sophisticated and is extremely knowledgeable about art and comedy. As she wrestled with the dilemma of leaving college without a degree. Candice has proven that having a college degree doesn't automatically mean a girl can step right intothe job of her dreams.
To open the right doors, often what's needed is a business skill your prospective boss can use. And, as her motto of life is the old legend: "follow your bliss." Which, is great advice whatever someone chooses to do in life. One should never say, 'I might have, when they never even tried.' Candice appreciates life. ... Read more

Product Description
Beloved comic actress Faith Ford puts a fresh and healthy new spin on down-home cooking with 125 updated Southern classics and traditional favorites cooked by three generations of her family. You wouldn't know it by looking at her -- either during her years as Corky Sherwood on CBS's Murphy Brown or now on her hit ABC comedy Hope & Faith -- but Faith Ford loves to eat. Growing up in Pineville, Louisiana, Faith learned how to cook the great Southern classics from her mother and grandmother: Old-Fashioned Smothered Chicken, Mom's Smoky Beef Brisket, Southern-Style Fried Catfish, Cora's Skillet Candied Sweet Potatoes, Snap Beans and New Potatoes, Buttermilk Biscuits, Fluffy Lemon Icebox Pie, and more. Then, at age seventeen, she left Pineville for a modeling and acting career in New York City and later Los Angeles. She longed for the comforting foods of home but sought to adapt them to match her new, California, health-conscious sensibility. Thus began a lifetime of experimentation in the kitchen, developing healthier versions of foods from her childhood by cooking with olive oil; incorporating loads of vegetables -- staples on the family farm in Louisiana -- into every meal; oven-frying; and using chopped fresh herbs for maximum flavor. The delicious results -- Golden Crispy Oven-Fried Chicken; Broiled Red Snapper with Olives, Onions, and Tomatoes; Grilled Veggie Po' Boys; Dilled Egg White Salad; Green Beans Braised with Balsamic Vinegar and Soy Sauce; Asparagus with Tarragon Vinaigrette; Peaches-n-Creamy Shake; and Sweet Summer Melon-Mint Salad -- regularly wow friends in Los Angeles and have even won over Mom and the folks back home. An inspired combination of the best of both worlds -- the homespun, heirloom dishes Faith grew up on (because every once in a while you need to indulge and only the "real thing" will do) and her own healthier, more modern versions and creations -- Cooking with Faith is also about the bonds that grow between family and friends as they spend time together in the kitchen. After all, says Faith, "well-made food is an experience. It's about taking pride in what you eat. It's a remedy for an increasingly fast-food-reliant society -- I mean, how can you be that much in a hurry?" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Secrets Are Shared
The author shares her family recipes with generosity. The recipes for skillet cornbread, applesauce cake, and cornbread dressing make it worth the purchase price alone. This book can make you excited about cooking again if you are feeling uninspired, and I enjoyed the personal stories throughout. It's clear that a great deal of attention went into this book, and every effort is made to ensure success. I have made probably a dozen of the recipes, and only one went into the garbage. I am an extremely picky eater, so I would consider this the highest praise!Thank you for sharing your secrets of Southern cooking!

5-0 out of 5 stars good everyday cooking
I picked up the 2004 edition of this cookbook at a discount book store dirt cheap and I wasn't disappointed! There are only 125 recipes but they are classic, tried & true recipes. This cookbook is filled with recipes that are perfect for every night family dinners as well as having company over. This is not the kind of cookbook that just sits on the shelf- you will use it all the time! We especially enjoyed the herb-and-parmesan-stuffed turkey burgers on toasted garlic buns. YUM!

5-0 out of 5 stars great cookbook
This is by far my favorite cookbooks and i use it on a regular basis.
i like the fact that most of the recipes are southern and everything i have tried so far in this cookbook has been a huge hit with friends and family. u won't go wrong if u purchase this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cooking with Faith by Faith Ford
This book is a classic on the mechanics of cooking, particularly
fine Southern cooking. For instance, "Cat High Creole" is presented. Spinach salad is described for vegetarians. The
popular contents are the salad with dill horseradish dressing. Brocolli ginger soup is presented as an herbal delight. Southern soup with cabbage and beef/chicken broth is depicted for health-
conscious lunchers. The acquisition would be very useful for any
master cook in the house. It is reasonably priced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading & receipes together.
Different cookbook; combines heartwarming family stories of cooking/family growing up in Central Louisiana, along with easy, delicious recipes.I identify with the recipes since I am from that part of the state. She returns more often than I; I spoke with her in the local airport and she is a warm, friendly person who shares her love of family and receipes.Buy this, it is worth the money.
