GREAT INFORMATIONAND REMINDER
This book is a collection of postcards and photographs that were used to ridicule and poke fun at Blacks in the late 1800's and early 1900's.
I met the author and she said she was walking in a mall in Lexington, KY and they were have a "flea market" type sale in the mall. She saw two white women looking at items and laughing so she went over to see what the joke was. Shockingly, "we" were the joke. The women were looking at these postcards of Black women dressed as "mammies", Black men being ridden as horses, etc...... These postcards had been in someones home and family for years and they were selling them in public like this.
The author began buying and collecting items like these and decided to publish a series of books to remind people where Black have risen from. It wasn't that long ago that it was ok to refer to us this way and it wasn't long ago that it was ok to publicly display these items and laugh at them in public.
A good book to have around for when your Black children take for granted all that you are able to provide for them and wonder why they don't have trust funds or 2 week vacations to Cancun like their white counterparts. We are just rising above some of these stereotypes to be able to work and achieve our hopes and dreams as do other Americans. Great reminder to us all to keep striving! ... Read more

The Segregated Hour
On March 18, 2008, as Barack Obama rose to the stage in Philadelphia, political commentators were on pins and needles over how he was going to address the fiery sermons of his long-time friend and mentor, the Reverend Jeremiah Wright. With an eye toward a more perfect union, the soon-to-be president offered his initial thoughts on the current state of race relations in America. "The fact that so many people are surprised to hear that anger in some of Reverend Wright's sermons simply reminds us of the old truism that the most segregated hour in American life occurs on Sunday morning."

Soon after the Civil Rights Movement came to an end, James Cone had been the first to write of this "old truism" when he introduced the world to something he called Black Liberation Theology. Centuries of slavery, discrimination, and violence had stained the canvas of America's racial divide, but laws now required the immediate and full integration of public life. For those still angered by past and present oppression, there was only one place of refuge where the government would not intrude: the black church. And Cone would become their primary theologian.

Rarely seen in small towns and rural fellowships, black liberation has been relegated to the inner city neighborhoods where the poor reach out for anyone who will give them hope for a better tomorrow. Whether the preachers of liberation have been truly held accountable for the accuracy of their message is the subject of great controversy, but there can be no productive dialogue over such matters until those who would cast judgment first acknowledge the honest and often tragic history that has created this most segregated hour of American life.

While we crusade for democracy overseas, who is crusading for the diminishing middle-class at home? On June 22, 2005, my beloved son was sentenced to 13 months in military prison at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Two requests for clemency were denied, and he has been warned that it will be at least a year before he can appeal his case. His first clemency request with the Fort Stewart Commander General was expectedly denied and his second clemency request to the Fort Sill brass was also denied in early January. It is obvious the military wants him to serve the full sentence.
