Product Description
We wept at his Oscar-winning role in Marty...we gasped when he took on Frank Sinatra in From Here to Eternity...we were riveted by his compelling performances in The Dirty Dozen, Bad Day at Black Rock, and Ice Station Zebra...and we laughed at his television sitcom McHale's Navy. We loved all of Ernest Borgnine's many portrayals, but what did we know about the man behind the famous roles? Now for the first time, he tells us in his own words the fascinating story of his life in this witty, candid, and revealing memoir.

For more than fifty years, Ernest--or "Ernie" as he's known to his friends--has been one of the most recognized, celebrated stars in Hollywood as well as a respected, talented actor, and a living legend. Stretching from his childhood as the son of Italian immigrants to a spectacular career that is still thriving in his 91st year, from the early days of live TV to the voiceovers for The Simpsons and SpongeBob SquarePants, Ernie tells of the trials and tribulations on his road to fame, the friendships he shared with some of the silver screen's biggest stars, and the glamorous leading ladies he loved.

Acclaimed for his ability to play sensitive and tough-guy roles equally well, he was also famous for squaring off against some of Hollywood's most formidable actresses--including Bette Davis in A Catered Affair and Joan Crawford in Johnny Guitar.Recalling his experiences starring in classic movies such as The Poseidon Adventure, The Wild Bunch, and Escape from New York, he reveals personal insights and irresistible stories about cinema's greatest icons--including Spencer Tracy, James Stewart, Kirk Douglas, Montgomery Clift, Gary Cooper, Janet Leigh, Raquel Welch, Gene Hackman, Rock Hudson, Sammy Davis, Jr., Tony Curtis, Alan Ladd, Glenn Ford, and Burt Lancaster. And with characteristic frankness, he also talks about his off-screen loves and passions.

A must for every film buff, Ernie: An Autobiography is a fascinating memoir--filled with secrets, well-remembered details, and never-before-told stories--of a star who has thrived in the changing world of Hollywood for more than half a century, and endeared himself to legions of fans everywhere.

Ernest Borgnine is an Academy Award winning actor whose film and TV career has spanned more than sixty years. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Tova. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All Hail McHale!
All you need to do to appreciate the talent of Ernie Borgnine is watch "From Here to Eternity" and "Marty" back to back. Anybody who can make you hate him so vehemently in one role and then turn around and win your empathy and sympathy so completely in the next, is a pretty damn good actor.

In "Ernie: The Autobiography" Borgnine tells you how it all began. Like every good Italian American son, he gives the bulk of the credit to his mom. It's a sweet story from a guy who is tough as nails and sweet as pie. If you can't love and admire Ernest Borgnine after reading this book then you can't love any entertainer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great smile!
I have always believed Ernest Borgnine, the actor, possessed one of the greatest smiles in the history of films. After reading his autobiography "ERNIE", it's easy to understand why.Like most people of his generation, famous or otherwise, Mr. Borgnine is a matter-of-fact guy who takes things as they come."ERNIE" is a wonderful read.Wearing a rented tux and parking blocks away from the theater the night he won the academy award for "Best Actor" is just one example of his life as an actor who becomes a star as if by accident.Read "ERNIE", it will make you smile.

5-0 out of 5 stars "I don't want to set the world on fire, I just want to keep my nuts warm."
Great book, great human being.I laughed a lot and I cried a lot.Keep your nuts warm, Ernie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, Honest, Open Time With A Hollywood Original!
Not since George Burns released his various reminisces has an autobiography been so much fun to read.In a deceptively slim book, Ernest Borgnine comes in and provides an education on being a dependable Hollywood veteran.Unvarnished, uncompromising and incisive, Borgnine describes how it was to rise up from a simple background to become a staple of 60s television, as well as a film actor regularly rubbing shoulders with other luminaries, finding himself in more than one major production.

This is not so much a "me me me" book as similar works from other actors have turned out to be.Borgnine freely hands out entertaining insights on people such as Lee Marvin, Spencer Tracy, Kirk Douglas and others. He also provides an ongoing series of thumbnail memoirs of the movies he's been involved in: a career which has seen him portraying everything from a Viking king to a reporter blown to bits in deep space.

It's sad to think that, in today's Hollywood of increasingly "smooth" and "visual" performers, someone with the looks of Borgnine (or the talent) probably wouldn't be hired. But as ERNIE proves, there will always be a need for actors who're not afraid to take on any role and get his hands dirty.Borgnine has continually given his audience 150% . . . and never so much as in the pages of this book.
