Product Description
This extraordinary book of images represents a lifetime of photographic practice by one of Hollywood's most compelling actors. A four-time Academy Award nominee, Jeff Bridges has starred in many of the most beloved films of our time, including The Last Picture Show, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Starman, The Fisher King, Fearless, American Heart, The Big Lebowski, The Contender, and Seabiscuit, this summer's upcoming blockbuster feature from Universal Pictures. Bridges has collaborated with some of the most respected directors in Hollywood, among them Peter Bogdanovich, the Coen Brothers, Terry Gilliam, Francis Ford Coppola, Ridley Scott, and Peter Weir, and he has costarred with many of the screen's most compelling actors:Kevin Spacey, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Tobey McGuire, Tommy Lee Jones, Robin Williams, Nick Nolte, John Turturro, Gary Oldman, Tim Robbins, Michelle Pfeiffer, Lauren Bacall, Joan Allan, Amanda Plummer, Isabella Rossellini, Ellen Barkin, Barbra Streisand, Jessica Lange, Penelope Cruz, and Jane Fonda, to name but a few.For more than twenty years, on dozens of film sets, Bridges has perfected his own photography, shooting between takes and behind-the-scenes with a Widelux camera. This fascinating, surprisingly candid body of work began as a personal project, as he recorded the arduous, emotionally intense, evanescent work of the film shoot in books that were privately printed and given as gifts to cast and crew. These are not traditional "Hollywood" pictures, but rather - despite the costumes and lighting, the crowds of extras, the stardom of the subjects - pictures of friends at work. Taken togheter, the pictures act as Bridges' personal and professional diary, with actors, directors, and crew appearing as coworkers, all equal participants in the job at hand. With a foreword by Peter Bogdanovich and Jeff Bridges' hand-written commentary and captions throughout, Pictures promises to be one of the biggest visual books of the year.Proceeds from Pictures will be donated to The Motion Picture & Television Fun, a non-profit organization that offers charitable care and support to film-industry workers.Amazon.com Review
Photographs from movie sets have always been packed with the curious itch of glamour. Pictures, actor Jeff Bridges's book of photographs, is no exception, and it starts with a special camera. Bridges has been taking on-set photos since the 1980s with a Widelux, an oddity without a shutter or viewfinder. The camera's moving slit makes for panoramic images (about the same aspect as a widescreen film) and even allows quick moving subjects to appear twice on the same negative. Hence these photos are not always crystal clear but nevertheless capture magic, a verisimilitude of being on the inside of the movie-making process. The wide field can show an actor and director foreground while the crew spins their own story in another part of the print--multiple stories written in light. Bridges often catches his fellow actors with an amusing twinkle in their eye whether preparing for scene or appearing twice in the same shot mirroring the comedy/tragedy masks. Bridges adds reminisces about the photos including a very funny off-color story from The Big Lebowski set.

In the past, Bridges would give out self-published collections of his photographs to cast and crew as gifts at the end of a shoot. One might have spied these images in promotional items or magazines, but with Pictures, now fans of the movies can have their own wonderful keepsake. --Doug Thomas ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
I purchased this book because (1) Jeff Bridges is my favorite actor and (2) I love photography and used to have my own darkroom set up and had a part-time business with it.It is really a good book - there are so many personal notes in it which make you understand the photo and the movie industry. It is also a nice look into Jeff's personality. It is something you can pick up time after time and see new things that were not previously seen.
It is a joy to have this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great "Behind the Scenes" photos
This is a great coffee table book if you love movies and admire Jeff Bridges. He is an actor,a musician,a photographer, and a writer and obviously a true gentleman. He started bringing a camera on movie sets, creating albums, and giving them to the crew when the movies were finished. His observations about the movie making process are well written and intriguing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I loved this book, the pictures were great and some very candid shots you could only get being so close.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
Is there anything Jeff Bridges can't do? From Tron to The Big Lebowski to the Mirror Has Two Faces, he captures his co-stars and crew brilliantly. No candids here. He uses a camera with a really wide angle, so his pictures spread across two pages of the book. Hard to put down! Sprinkled with anecdotes from the various movie sets. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure Delight
Last month I enrolled in a beginner's class at the Manhattan Bridge Club, where I received a copy of this book. The author is the club's owner -- a man as witty and warm in person as he seems on the pages of his book.I began reading It's Bridge, Baby! on the way home from class and couldn't tear myself away.I actually laughed out loud on several occasions.Bayone's passion for bridge is infectious, and he explains the elements of this very complicated game in a clear, structured way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best bridge book I've read (and I've read a bunch)
What I like about this book is that he takes his time to build a point slowly and methodically, with lots of examples. You understand the logic behind the "rules", so you can figure them out for yourself. After reading it, I went back and picked up "Bridge for Dummies", and B4D paled by comparison.

5-0 out of 5 stars Completely different---completely effective!
I've read many introductory books to bridge, and this is in a league ofits own!A very simple, straightforward, logical approach to playing.Thebook begins with the playing of the hands (in no-trump then trump), andmoves to bidding as a logical extension of the ability to win tricks.Thisapproach is unique, and takes allows the player to LEARN the properbidding, rather than to memorize (too) many sets of numbers for biddinghands. Also, I felt that the other books I have read did not offer astrong foundation in the playing-out of the hands.I'll be purchasingcopies for non-bridge-playing friends!HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book but have questions
I am a returning bridge player and find this book very helpful in refreshing my mind about the game.I have a question for the author and don't know how to ask him except here. Mr Bayone, where did you find thescoring system which I love but have never seen before?I want to changemy bridge table over to your system but need some validation. Thank you

5-0 out of 5 stars All Right, I'll Bite.
Sure thing, if you're thinking Bridge go no further.Kick back, or swimup but don't pass this one by.I've learned bridge in side and out, andfrankly, though the subject matter can be somewhat dry at times, thepresentation is Numeral UNO! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Model Railroad Bridges, Trestles and Tunnels Reviewed
A good general overview of various types of Trestles, Bridges with a light touch on Tunnels. The author comments on several types of bridges in general use over the two eras of railroading, steam and diesel. He does demonstrate how he and others have made up a few different ones, shows the use of jigs for making up trestle structures and gives a few tips and tricks on adding some interesting details to model railroad layouts. Not a comprehensive digest but more of an idea manual to get you started on making your own as well as making use of available kits for these structures.Lots of illustrations and period photos, diagrams as well as a few explainations on some of the more complicated engineering ideas that get used to make up Bridges and Trestles. A little bit of nomenclature is added to your vocabulary as you read through the chapters and a few of the tips are downright handy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bridges, Trestles & Tunnels
This book is an excellent guide to model railroad bridges, trestles, and tunnels. It presents all types of construction including wood, stone, iron, concrete, etc and all era's from the early 18th century to the present.

Many prototype photographs and illustrations are used to show the different types of bridges. You don't have to be a civil engineer to read the book, but it will give you a very good detailed view of each type of bridge.

Each section in the book ends with information on how to model these structures. This includes construction details including sources for the needed products. Information is also included on how to finish the products.

When I now see a bridge while traveling I have good knowledge of why and how the bridge was constructed.

I am not a modeler (at least yet) but I think this book will appeal to both novices and more experienced modelers. I have two other similar books and this book is by far the best of the three. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great addition to any modelers book collection
This is honestly a great book, it helped me. Im fairly new to model railroading (only about 4 years) and it has honestly made me into the goto guy (within my model railroad club) for bridges and tunnels. It covers all sorts of wierd and wonderfull ideas for your layouts. A GREAT resource and addition to any model railroaders libary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jeff Wilson "Bridges the Gap"
As a 28 year veteran of professional railroading, with 18 years in the bridge department, Jeff has indeed managed to bridge the gap between prototype and modeler. He explains in great detail the "why" that goes into selecting the proper type or size bridge for a particular location. Many beautiful bridge models are spoiled because they would just not be practical in the real world. Jeff did an excellent job of researching the subject material and has made it easy for a modeler to build a very nice, prototypical bridge for a given geographic location.

5-0 out of 5 stars An in-depth guide that combines an appreciation of railroad history with solid how-to tactics for bringing said history to life
The Model Railroader's Guide To Bridges, Trestles & Tunnels is an in-depth hobbyist's guide to adding minutely detailed, realistic bridges and tunnel portals to a model railroad layout. Chapters include overviews of the construction and purpose of bridges, trestles, and tunnels; historic and contemporary prototype photos, in black-and-white and color; strategies for modeling, painting, and weathering scale replicas; listings of bridge, trestle, and tunnel kits in HO, N, and O scale, as well as excellent suggestions for modifying kits and scratchbuilding; and so much more. An in-depth guide that combines an appreciation of railroad history with solid how-to tactics for bringing said history to life.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolutely gorgeous book
This is a spectacular book and one that other authors and publishers of 'art of' books ought to take a close look at.The artwork included is in a variety of formats from basic sketches to full digital renderings and includes a number or extras such as a DVD and poster that really make this book something extra special. All of the characters and even backgrounds are well featured. The book itself even comes in a plastic slipcase that compliments the design asthetic of the interior pages.Just like the film, one can tell that a lot of effort and love for the story and characters went into the creation of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best art book for a movie i've ever found
i would say, above and beyond, this has to be one of the most stylistic and visually thought-out artbooks i have ever had the pleasure to lay eyes on.To this day, i have not found one for any other movie that was in so many ways rewarding. From conceptual drawings to added removable material, paintings and sketches, this book leaves you without much more to want.I am a huge fan of the movie, and appreciated all the detail work that went into every facet of the film, and most of these are laid out in the book!- more than just character designs, pages on the surfboard designs, logos, "old" photos of surfers and younger geek, all topped off with a beautiful hardbound cover (with plastic, image-overlaying slipcover to protect the book) for a very reasonable price.
if you are obsessed with the movie, there is no choice- get it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another great book
Following on from the previous Open Season art of, Surfs Up is another great look at the development years. The environment drawings and paintings are wonderful to look at and the characters a fun to look at. Again the book delivers some extra inserts throughout the book like stickers and such...but i feel this didnt have as much put into it as Open Season. Still it is a great book to have on the shelf for inspiration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great development book
I collect and study a lot of "art of" books. This is one of the best I've ever seen, much better than the Disney "art of" books. It gives you a great breadth of development: color, sketches, layout, backstory, etc.

The sketches are amazing, and the renderings and color treatments are beautiful, lush, and eye candy. I read this book before seeing the movie and it was wonderful to see how everything came together in the film. If you like "art of" books - this one should be in your library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just plane fun
originally i really didn't have any intentions of seeing "surf's up" in theaters, i was just going to wait it out and rent it. then i stumbled upon the making of art book and changed my mind. what i really love about the book is the playful attitude it takes to the whole "art of/ making of" genre. it goes beyond showing you concept sketches and the likes and shows how they constructed scenes, gives extra little insights on character's personalities, and through in some behind the scenes jokes that didn't make it into the movie. all in all just a really enjoyable read. ... What Are You Most Grateful For?

Ricky Gervais says . . . Pajamas.
I've started wearing pajamas out, because they're more comfortable than trousers. (Laughs) I started out with jeans, then went to sweatpants about ten years ago. Now it's just pajamas. I wore them to the White House. I've gone whole hog.

Dolly Parton says . . . Humble Roots.
I think being brought up dirt poor left with me with a feeling of what it was like to go without, so I can relate when people are having a hard time. In my case, being a songwriter, I'm able to write not only for and about myself, but for what I know other people are feeling, even if they don't always have the means to get their voices heard.

Anne Rice says . . . Clackety-Clack.
My stepmother, who was a very practical, wonderful woman, took me into Dallas before I went into college to buy me a typewriter. She picked out this wonderful little portable one, black and white keys, and it was real fast. I still have it. I won't give it up.

In this enlightening and engaging collection, celebrities from Seth Rogen and Sheryl Crowe to Joyce Carol Oates and B.B. King share the people, places, and things for which they are most grateful. Alternately sentimental and surprising, wise and wacky, these heartfelt "gratitude bucket lists" as described by some of our most beloved artists are sure to inspire readers everywhere to make their own lists--and live their own lives with more love, affection, and thanksgiving. ... When this book came into my life it offered me an inspired, empowered meaning to push me forward in life. This book is priceless and all the stories have an incredible lesson, gift or challenge someone has grown through. They say the definition of success is to model someone who has what you want.I couldn't think of a better book where someone can model successful people and learn from their stories of gratitude.

Todd Jensen, the author is an incredibly talented writer. He is incredibly gifted and for him to have interviewed so many celebrities, marks a huge accomplishment not too many people have been able to reach.

I strongly recommend this to anyone who wants more in life, anyone who is ready to transform, be grateful, enjoy their journey. It makes a wonderful holiday gift as well!I personally bought ten books and am giving them as gifts to my inner circle!!And planning on buying many more during the holiday season to share with some very special people.

5-0 out of 5 stars My entire family is getting this for Christmas!
There are a lot of self-help books on gratitude out there, but this one takes a much different approach. Instead of feeling all touchy-feely or instructional, it offers insights and personal anecdotes from a wide variety of public figures.

I really loved the approach - It felt like I was reading interesting articles on some of my personal heroes (e.g. Ray Bradbury, Kurt Vonnegut), but when I put it down, I actually felt lighter and happier. Fantastic!

For five years, photographer Salvo Galano visited a park near the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen in New York. There, tens of thousands of homeless men, women, and children have gathered daily for food, friendship, and guidance since its inception in 1982.Galano set up a makeshift studio with a simple burlap backdrop and photographed the fascinating characters he encountered, documenting their stories of love, loss, and survival.Sidewalk Stories, Galano's moving testimony to the power of the human spirit, showcases some of New York City's most remarkable individuals - the homeless - and their integrity and courage despite the stigma of homelessness.Accompanied by mind-boggling, up-to-the-minute statisticson this dire situation, Sidewalk Stories illustrates that homelessness could happen to any of us:Naval Academy cadets, policemen, performers, inventors, grandmothers, families, the disabled...But as Galano writes, "Homeless does not necessarily mean hopeless."Proceeds from the sales of Sidewalk Stories will be donated to the Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars People like us
With this amazing book Salvo Galano, finally, shows a simple truth: homeless are not space aliens fallen on our sidewalks. They are people, they love, they smile, they smoke, they fight, they fall. They have stories, they were clerks, soldiers, artists. They were us, until something went wrong. Usually not terribly wrong, they got fired, they got evicted, they lost all their money recovering from an accident not covered by the insurance. Salvo put them in front of the camera, like actors, or models, or important people revealing a world of beautiful human being who happened to be homeless.

Mr. Galano's work is beautiful, meaningful and unique. All New Yorkers have some experience with the homeless. All too often, we forget that homeless people are just that--people with stories, friends and loved ones. The combination of statistics on the homeless situation coupled withMr. Galano's insightful and beautiful photographs is not only moving, but also fresh. We all need to be reminded that homelessness is not a choice. Homeless people have histories just like the rest of us and Mr. Galano brings dignity and beauty to this horrible situation and makes us realize that we must do more to recify this staggering situation. ... It is a remake of the 1933 classic King Kong, about how a giant ape is captured and imported to New York City for exhibition. The remake's screenplay was written by Lorenzo Semple Jr., based on the original movie story written by Merian C.
