1-0 out of 5 stars Movie better than the book
I have to say for the first time in my life the movie is way better than the book. This book is totally disjointed and full of unnecesary profanity. The author comes across as very immature and a total whiner. Don't bother buying it, the movie is much more enjoyable. ... Read more

Longing for a place of her own, a ten-year-old orphan creates a secret home in a deserted cottage in the village of St. Martin's Green.Amazon.com Review
For an orphan child whose life is filled with comfortable, predictable sameness, with no particular hardships, life is, well, allright. Really, what does Mandy have to worry about? So it comes as asurprise even to Mandy when a small restlessness begins to grow in her. This lonely ache sets her to wandering farther afield, and leads her toa startling and wonderful discovery over the orphanage wall--a very old, very small, seemingly abandoned cottage. Embarking on a clandestinedomestic fantasy involving gardening tools and soap flakes, Mandy findsherself being less than honest about where and how she's spending her days.Holding her secret closer and closer to her heart, this imaginative dreamerinadvertently endangers her reputation--and her life.

For every child who has fallen in love with The Secret Garden orA LittlePrincess, Julie Andrews Edwards's 1971 novel will be aheartwarming discovery. Any sometimes-lonely child with a giant imaginationwill recognize Mandy's dreams and rejoice in her ultimate fairy-tale happyending. Judith Gwyn Brown's Edward Gorey-esque pen and ink drawings (withnone of Gorey's sinister air) are quietly memorable. Fans of Julie Andrews Edwards--Sound of Music star of stage and screen--will be thrilled to see her latest children's book, Little Bo: The Story of BonnieBoadicea, or to an earlier favorite, The Last of the Really GreatWhangdoodles. 5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and heartwarming...
This story begins in a large orphanage for girls in England. The main character is Mandy, a young orphaned girl who lives under the matron's strict, precise rules. But then she discovers something that turns her life upside-down: a tiny cottage, nestled away in the thick woods near the orphanage. The girl immediately falls in love with the little house, especially the magnificent "shell room", and she ultimately claims it as her own. Time and time again, she slips away to her new hideout, and very slowly the house begins to be something beautiful. Walls are scrubbed and furnished, and brilliant flowers are planted outside. Mandy slowly and carefully scrubs and digs away years of filth and grime. But the matron begins to be suspicious, and Mandy must struggle to hide her secret more than ever. Then Mandy falls ill in the cottage. Who will save her? Who is the "secret visitor" who keeps visiting her cottage? This book is interesting, heartwarming, and suspenseful. I loved watching how gradually the cottage became beautiful. The ending is sad and happy at the same time. It's an amazing book and extremely descriptive - for instance, when describing the flowers Julie Andrews says something like this - "Masses of brilliant petals laid thickly on one another." I'd recommend this book to anyone, old or young!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books ever
I have the original hardcover version of this book, given to me at the end of 2nd grade by my teacher.I am 44 years old now and it still one of my all time favorite books.I re-read it every few years, and still cry every time.Young girls will identify with Mandy, whether or not they are actually orphans. How many of us wouldn't just love to find a cottage in the woods that they could fix up and call their own?Highly recommended! ... Product Description
What makes a fairy-tale a fairy-tale? Is it the conflict within the story, where we recognize familiar themed characters that must battle against evil? Alternatively, is it in finding out how as the reader, we too, can conquer the darkness found within ourselves? Fairy tales help us understand the choices and abilities we need throughout our own lives. Children of all ages can learn from Alinda. She models how by recognizing her own "gifts and abilities" when weaved with courage and fortitude, helped her to face adversity. She shows us that the battle for family and love (especially when all hope seems to be lost), is an honorable fight. The story of Alinda of the Loch (youngest daughter of Queen Aurora of Inverness-shire also known as the "real" Sleeping Beauty) will answer many of these questions through her little wise tale. Her story will help us to recognize the shadow and the sunshine in the life of a girl who has obtained both the status and rewards of being both a mythical and modern day "princess."Be one of the first to own Alinda of the Loch: The Story of Sleeping Beauty's Daughter! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A perfect fairy tale with a modern day twist!
This book REALLY is fantastic. It is creative and entertaining. It is well edited to give it a good flow and the graphics are perfect.

"Alinda of the Loch" would make a wonderful movie. It is for all ages and a real heartwarming story. The visuals are clearly painted - each person is vivid in my mind. My favorite is Pisces.

The suspense is thrilling- starting from, "Had Shadow's gift failed?" to "Will she go back?"Romantics will love the triangle between Alinda, Andrew, and Grant and also the problem of Millie. Anglophiles will love the British speak, spelling, and style of writing.

The story also satisfies those who enjoy modern twists to fairy tales. When Grant is introduced, that page immediately includes modern references of airplanes and email. The story line of Alinda becoming famous designing jewelry for the rock star, Pisces, shows the comparison between a princess 500 years ago and a modern day princess. Alinda will have the choice between both. The many modern/ancient comparisons are thought-provoking.

The back story of Nessie reminds me of the back story of Wicked- it's amusing to think about all those years of people watching for Nessie and now we know where she came from.

The ending is clever and perfect. :) ... Read more

Product Description
The Whangdoodle was once the wisest, the kindest, and the most extraordinary creature in the world. Then he disappeared and created a wonderful land for himself and all the other remarkable animals -- the ten-legged Sidewinders, the little furry Flukes, the friendly Whiffle Bird, and the treacherous, "oily" Prock. It was an almost perfect place where the last of the really great Whangdoodles could rule his kingdom with "peace, love and a sense of fun"-- apart from and forgotten by people. But not completely forgotten. Professor Savant believed in the Whangdoodle. And when he told the three Potter children of his search for the spectacular creature, Lindy, Tom, and Ben were eager to reach Whangdoodleland. With the Professor's help, they discovered the secret way. But waiting for them was the scheming Prock, who would use almost any means to keep them away from his beloved king. Only by skill and determination were the four travelers able to discover the last of the really great Whangdoodles and grant him his heart's desire. Julie Andrews Edwards, star of stage and screen, has written a unique and beloved story that has become a modern classic. The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles is sure to continue to delight readers everywhere. This edition includes a new foreword by the author. ... Read more

Excerpt: "The Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun" is a 1984 song by American singercomedian Julie Brown parodying 1950s "teen tragedy" songs. The single and music videoboth released more than a decade before school shootings became real-life events revolve around a teenaged Valley girl's oblivious recounting of how her best friend, Debi, who upon being crowned homecoming queen unexpectedly pulled out a weapon and began indiscriminately killing classmates and teachers at the dance. In the end, Debi is shot by police and confesses before she dies that she murdered for a mysterious person named "Johnny", leaving her friend to ponder whether she means a nerdy classmate that always had food stuck in his braces; the queen's bouquet in the music video has the words 'Debi, I love you, Johnny' written on a label. The narrator compares the unrevealed identity of "Johnny" to "Rosebud" in Citizen Kane, observing, "It's like that movie Citizen Kane, you know, where you later find out that 'Rosebud' is his sled? / But we'll never know who Johnny was, 'cause, like, she's dead!" The song appeared as a B-side to Brown's single "I Like 'em Big and Stupid", and took off after being played frequently on the Dr. Demento Show. As a result, "The Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun" is remembered better than the A-side of that single, turning into what music critic Jonathan Taylor called "one of the most delightfully silly singles and videos of the past few years." A re-recorded dance version appeared as a B-side to Brown's 2005 single "I Want to Be Gay", 21 years after the o...http://booksllc.net/?id=1838582 ... Read more

Excerpt: David Victor Sim (born May 17, 1956 in Hamilton, Ontario) is an award-winning Canadian comic book writer and artist, best known as the creator of Cerebus the Aardvark. Dave Sim was born in Hamilton and moved to Kitchener, Ontario with his family when he was two. His father Kena native of Glasgow, Scotlandwas a factory supervisor at Budd Automotive and his mother an elementary school secretary. He has an older sister named Sheila. He was interested in comics from an early age, and dropped out of high school to pursue a career in the field. The only job he ever held outside of the comic field was working as an employee at Now and Then Books. "It was the only place in Kitchener that I ever felt truly comfortable before or since", Sim has said. In the 1970s he published a fanzine called The Now and Then Times (financed by Harry Kremer, the owner of the comic book store after which the newsletter was named), and did work for such other fanzines as John Balge's Comic Art News and Reviews and Gene Day's Dark Fantasy and National Advisor. Sim often interviewed professional comics artists such as Barry Windsor-Smith, Harvey Kurtzman and Neal Adams. Sim also created various other comics, including a newspaper comic strip called The Beavers which was published in the Kitchener-Waterloo Record, and wrote or drew stories published in anthologies such as Phantacea and Star*Reach. The Beavers also saw print in Star*Reach's sister funny animals comic Quack!. In December 1977, Sim began publishing Cerebus, an initially bi-monthly, black-and-white comic book series. It began as a parodic cross...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=257219 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Serious Hikes for Serious Walkers
Los Angeles has a lot of neat countryside to explore if you know where to look. When I first came to the LA basin from Idaho, I was overwhelmed by the suburban sprawl, but I quickly found lots of nice outdoor experiences nearby. This book will help anyone else looking to escape the city for a few hours (or days). It features over 80 hikes all within 2 hours of LA.

I've hiked about a third of the trails described in this guide and all are nice. With time off in April, I expect to explore more.By way of a warning though, you will need to be reasonably fit to do many of these hikes. Most are 5 to 10 miles long, often with substantial elevation gain.Several are shorter, but a few are quite challenging. Happily, the authors also provide options for shortening (and sometimes lengthening) your walks. The bulk of the hikes listed are in the San Gabriel Mountains and Santa Monica National Recreation Areas.A few selections from Orange County, Palos Verde and Catalina Island round out the book.On the whole, this book is an excellent investment in fun and exploration. ...
