Received item in an appropriate amount of time and it was in great condition. Very happy.

A Storyteller to Beat All.
This little book contains anecdotes about the people in his life, and published shortly his 100th birthday.It contains accounts of his silliness in vaudeville theaters,where he used an assortment of names as he joined different acts.He appeared at the Shubert Theatre in Chicago with Fanny Brice of Ziegfield Follies fame; she was Baby Snooks character on radio.At the Chicago World's Fair, he was on the same bill with Sally Rand who had become famous for the fan dances she perfected in her flesh colored leotards.It wasn't naughty, only an illusion.He filled in for her and nobody noticed.

Betty McGrath at the Dewey Theater liked his "after shave" lotion (which incidentally smalled like fish); he loved to tell about his girls before becoming a team with Gracie Allen.He wrote 'Gracie: A Love Story' after her death.He knew famous stars of the day, like Al Jolson, following Carusa, "Folks, you ain't heard nothing yet."He calls Al the best entertainer of all time, and George Jessel as the funniest ad-libber. When he and Gracie took their show to California, they used the Artie Shaw band with Tony Martin as lead singer.They made some musicals with big name casts.Later he made movies, "The Sunshine Boys," "Oh, God!" and "Going in Style."

These are the remembrances of a very funny guy; on t.v. he was a riot.He wrote about Eddie Cantor, Jack Benny, Groucho Marx at the William Morris Christmas parties.One Christmas Eve he was appearing at one of the nightclubs in Las Vegas with Ann Margaret who was allowed to use his phone to call her mother in Sweden; talked for over an hour at his expense.He told a few off-color jokes about his friends and siblings in his inimitable manner.

Fun ancedotes written by Mr. Burns himself
It seems that no matter what he writes about, from the introduction about getting older to his nurse readjusting his toupee, he does it so very well with humor.(I did not even know that he wore a toupee!)

These are really short one to two page stories of incidents that had occurred during his lifetime.It may or may not have you laughing out loud.It will at the very least, bring a smile to your face.

This came out almost the day Burns passed away.This is a very funny anecdotal review of George Burns' entire life -- many of the stories go back to his childhood.(His one-liner when the tough Irish kids in his neighborhood demanded to know if he was Catholic is priceless!Good thing he was a fast runner....)

the men who invented show business
This is one of the funniest books I have ever read as well as an informative and authoritative history of American show business and the men who invented it from burlesque to vaudeville, radio, movies and tv.

One of the Funniest Books I've Ever Read
This book contains a treasure trove of hilarious anecdotes.

Here's an example.George Jessel had a lot of girlfriends.Once in Florida one was running away with another man when George took out a pistol, shot at the other man, missed him completely and winged a Japanese gardener two blocks away.He was charged, of course.When the judge sourly asked him, "Mr. Jessel, how does a man take aim at someone and hit someone else two blocks away?"

George replied, "I'm a comedian, not Buffalo Bill."

If you liked that one you should get this book.It probably has sixty stories that good.

Sincerely Written Love Story/Window into the Past!
For anyone appreciating a story of a love and a marriage that endures for a lifetime, for anyone who loves to look back on America's entertainment past, the era ofthe early to mid part of the 20th century, this book is for you! George Burns and Gracie Allen were a pretty amazing couple whose vibrant story will keep you turning each page. They first meet as Vaudeville performers and go on, in time, to appear on TV in its earliest days...days when shows were all done "live" and anything and everything could, and usually did, go wrong! George Burns speaks of all this, with the nostalgia, with the tenderness of a man truly in love with a woman. Buy this book! A Great Love Story
I bought and read this book over ten years ago. I found it so loving and heart warming that I was online trying to purchase it again. I highly recommend this book as it is funny, sweet, and what love is really about.

Lamb Chops alone? .....
Lamb Chops...What do lamb chops have to do with this story, well everything! Lamb Chops is the vaudeville routine that brought fame to this comedic duo in the late 1920's. I have the link to a You Tube movie short that was filmed in 1929 for this popular routine here. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzFcsdgkg54 ) In this clip and others that I've seen with Burns and Allen, I think Gracie is the reason that they had so much success. She was so natural in her role as the "ditzy dame". She was good if not one of the best funnymen to a straightman role. This book takes the reader back to the waning days of vaudeville and the beginnings of film, radio and television as the new media for bringing entertainment to its audiances. George Burns takes us back down memory lane with a personnal love story that lasted nearly 40 years. His memories include many places and friends that I as a reader enjoyed visiting. I don't read love stories usually, but this love story is one that I enjoyed and won't soon forget.

In our disposable transient society of today, it is a refreshing change to see a love and a marriage that lasted so long.As time goes on, it is becoming an even rarer event.

In this book, Mr. Burns fondly remembers his wife, Gracie Allen.The stories that he tells about her, how they met, and how they managed to stay together so long were interesting to read and entertaining.

I would recommend this book to all ages.It is easy reading and also tells somewhat of the history of vaudeville, radio, television, and movies.

Delightful Read
A friend gave me this book as a gift, knowing I enjoy George Burns humor. The 138-page hardcover was a quick and enjoyable read. Fagen's narrative wove together a collection of what Burns said, creating an insightful glimpse into a celebrity's life. As I read the book, I was only mildly aware of Fagen--he was practically transparent--as I read the biography. Fagen does tell the story in the third person, but brings out the character of his subject so strongly that I lost myself in Burns. ... Read more

Adequate though odd biography of a great president
Adequate biography of arguably the greatest of American presidents. The authors are a rather strange choice to write this biography. Burns is a FDR proponent of epic proporations and it is obvious that the 'Father of his country' does not measure up to Franklin 'president for life' Roosevelt. Some of the criticism raised about Washington's land deals and questions about his real motives are valid to a point but the constant sniping about Washington's lack of empathy for the common man is anachronistic at best.

A Good Place To Start A Quest
After being inspired by a college class entitled "The American Presidency", I set out on a quest to read a book about each United States President in chronological order.However, this was not as easy a task as it may seem, considering the volumes written about each leader.I was also wary of getting too deep into partisan territory, instead just wanting a base of knowledge about each Prez.Luckily, I stumbled upon this "American Presidents Series" and was not disappointed.

The book offered everything I could have asked for, and even a bit more.Authors James MacGregor Burns and Susan Dunn painted a very informative portrait of our first great leader, George Washington, as well as re-constructing the political sphere and times that he operated within.Upon finishing the text, I came away feeling as if I knew not only Washington the man and politician, but also the status of America's capitol at the end of the 1700s.Perhaps a partisan hand was in play at times (although I would say that not doing so is pretty much impossible in a text), but I could not detect it.

I will continue with confidence in my quest to educate myself about American's highest office, with this series being my guide along the way.

Generic and uninspired
I tend to shy away from books that fall under the banner of "series." Many times they contain top notch material, but many times they will slip in mediocre material. Such is the case here. This is a bland volume on Washington. Points are made over and over again, more like a persuasive essay than real scholarship. The word "obviously" is used many times to conclude a point. Furthermore, how many times can the word "undergirded" be used in a book...? I stopped counting. There are almost a countless number of books on Washington that are better.

Good for a brief introduction to Washington, nothing more
I suppose that this book is what should be expected from a 150-page biography of Washington: it serves as a good, brief introduction to the man, but not much more.The book is relatively shallow, and there appears to be little primary research, as the authors instead often refer to other historians' words and conclusions.

If you are looking for a first read on Washington, this would probably serve you well.If, on the other hand, you have already read a fair amount about Washington and the Revolution, I wouldn't label this a "must read."(Don't get me wrong, though: it wouldn't be a waste of time / money, either.)

The first President but also one of the best.
As the authors relate, Washington was human and open to the political menace of competing factions.He also was highly idealistic and wanted the best for his country.He may have had a ego, and thought his actions were the best for his nation.His administration as with his military command were made up of people who were more than capable.How else can you explain a administration with Adams, Pickering, Hamilton, and Jefferson competing for what they thought was best for their country.
Washington held these people together through some difficult crisises.The authors also remind us that Washington heard a lot of discouraging comments about his character during the eight years of his administration.Constant criticism was aimed at him.After eight years, it is no wonder he decided to retire to Mt. Vernon.

Washington may not have done any extraordinary things, but his actions ensured an American democracy for years to come.He guided the new republic to a standard in government and then retired when the time came.
His actions demonstrate his greatness.This book is fair read on the accomplishments of our first president.

To the earlier reviewer : If you can't stand the unvarnished truth, why are you reading this book. If you want rose-colored platitudes, read People magazine. This book tells it like it was, warts and all. Isn't that what a proper biography should do?

In this world, it is rare that a man show as much love, kindeness, and humility as did George Burns. However, this book chooses rather to focus on the sordid details of his life. The sexual immorality, the dirty jokes offstage, the things that George himself varnished over. George had a right tovarnish over the negatives. It is the soul of the man. It is how he made itto 100 years of age. This book instead punches him below the beltposthumously. If only this classic book were back in print-not only is it a biography of George & Gracie, but it has several pages of pictures(many never before seen)as well as an appendix in the back giving the synopsis of every television episode from October 1950 thru September 1958.The book is agood alternate to Gracie-A Love Story written by George himself.Onanother note, if I may go a step further, why doesn't Nick-At-Nite pick upthe series, surely it's been in syndication for about 40 years?It'd begreat fun seeing them again-George, Gracie, their son Ronnie,Blanche& Harry Morton, & Harry Von Zell.Though they are quite dated,these shows are still screamingly funny today.Gracie Allen was the 2ndfunniest woman in television, the 1st being the incomparable Lucille Ball. Memories of a Kansas publicity hack
The spine says Four Star Press, it should say One Star. This is a so called Hollywood Publicist that can't even spell Peter Bogdanovich's name right. His biggest claim to fame is that Rush Limbaugh was in his wedding party. If you're interested in legends such as Peggy Rea and Julie Warner, which stars come from the Kansas City area or publicity events like the Kansas City Tap Challenge, this book comes highly recommended. Just Wonderful
Oh, what a wonderful, lovely, loving little book by Melissa Miller. I had loved George Burns and Gracie Allen since I was a child, and continued to follow George right up to the end. This was the absolute last book about George Burns left that I hadn't read and was a bit suspicious, no matter how many nice things he'd said about Ms. Miller. She's about 4 years younger than me and initially reminded me of a number of young women I knew in the San Fernando Valley in the 60's, star-struck, shallow and generally very untalented. I had also seen them on television and was outraged anyone would try to replace Gracie. Boy was I wrong! She is a loving, sincere, caring individual with a mind of her own (a very good mind Melissa no matter what you've said), and deeply aware of life and those around her. She was a young woman who loved George Burns as well as Gracie did I believe.

The book also gave me, once again, proof that George Burns and the great, great Jack Benny were the two finest men who ever graced the stage or screen. Being able to read about George's private live with Melissa was the final and best ending to my reading of his life. Melissa, thank you from the bottom of my heart, and God bless you for how well you loved and cared for my hero.

A gift to "God"
Melissa Miller's account of her life with her "G.B." is right on. Her love for George leaps right off the page.As a friend of George, Miss Miller has the sweetness of the man down pat. Thank you Lisa for anhonest account of a fine man and one of our centuries great entertainers.To parphrase George, "Love IT Kid!"So did I.

Brighten your day or change your life
Many profound bits of philosophy with wisdom and humor. A quick read, or the start of changing your life.I thoroughly enjoyed it.

There is no book so bad that does not have something of value in it
Too few quotations, too many trivial quotations not enough deep and meaningful quotations from the religious sources. These three faults define this small book, nonetheless does have some quotations of interest, humor and value. But there are many other Jewish quotation collections which are far superior. Consider for instance the Hertz collection of 'Jewish Thoughts' or in more recent times Jessica Gribetz's book of Jewish Wisdom.

There are some good quotes in this book, but it's hardly encyclopedic.As a collector of quotations, a few of my favorites in this book are:

Don't buy this item. Very very poor quality. Only couple of pharases in each page. I regret ordering this book.

I Love Her Thats Why
One of the best love stories of the 20th century.Georges love for Gracy could be felt each time he spoke of her.I enjoyed learning more about their lives from the early days until the 50's when the book was written.They were two of the greatest comedians of their time.I would recommend this book to any Burns and Allen fan. ...
