Product Description

A land of tension and segregation, relatively unchanged since Nelson Mandela’s release from prison nearly a decade ago, South Africa is a country fraught with deep racial divides. While white citizens enjoy lifestyles similar to Westerners, black citizens inhabit a world of poverty and deprivation. Despite Mandela’s regime-shattering election as President, there has been little improvement in the ability of the two sides to communicate, limited both by race and language.

In Power Lines, Jason Carter, grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, offers a portrait of South Africa that few outsiders see. During his Peace Corps training, Carter learned Zulu and Siswati, and these tools helped to break down racial barriers. Befriended by blacks delighted to find a white person who spoke their tongue, Carter was embraced by the community, participating in rituals and everyday life. Carter’s moving accounts of his experiences reveal a willingness of people to reach out to each other—even in a society as divided as South Africa.

Compassionate and astute, Carter brilliantly depicts the strength and humanity of South Africans and their challenge to forge a vital bond.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
Jason Carter has written an insightful book relating his experiences while living and working in South Africa in one of the most exciting periods of our history. The challenges he faced continue to test South Africans today. An excellent read to experience a vicarious adventure in a beautiful land.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just received the book...
Just received Power Lines and am excited to read it. I glanced at the Introduction written by the author's grandfather, former President Jimmy Carter, in which he describes how his own mother joined the Peace Corps at 70. She was based in India; her grandson spent his time in Africa. Looking forward to reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars Path to New Hope
I loaned this book out from the library hoping to find something relating to travel, to the Peace Corps, and something relating to new ideas and places. I got this and a great story from a very successful teller. Carter's experiences are exactly what many dream of while working in the Peace Corps. But this book is full of history and even more personal experience. I enjoyed it immensly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ubuntu
Read this book to learn about Ubuntu which is a philosophy of life that Jason Carter found to be thriving in the Swazi. This approach to people and thus community is held out as a core strong hope for the South African native culture. This book is well worth reading.I have not stopped thinking whether Ubuntu is possible in our country or not.Let's hope it is not too late...we need it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Wena Wekunene Jason (You're Great Jason)
A great book that gives rare insight into Swazi culture and life in rural South Africa.Having lived in the area as a school teacher and a researcher, I enjoyed the innocence with which Jason re-created and shared his impressions and experiences.

Jason's immersion in the language and culture of poor rural South Africans is admirable. He clearly "goes native:" identifying with "the Blacks" and uncomfortably, judgmentally, dealing with Westerners and South African Whites. The brilliant twist in the story comes when Jason struggles to come to terms with South Africa's Black elite. He's the rugged, White bushboy reaching out to victims of apartheid who are now more like American yuppies than real "Africans."

I also appreciated his attempts to reveal the differences in experiences that Black (like me) and White Americans often have in South Africa.Interestingly, Jason's feelings about race in America affected how he perceived South Africa, and his South African experienced revised his sense of US race relations.

Definitely worth reading, along with James Hall's Sangoma! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but very good.
As a PeopleSoft programmer and administrator for the past many years, needless to say, I've struggled with the variety of components of PeopleSoft security. This book does an admirable job of putting it all in one place. The bright points of the book is that it is written in a concise and straight forward manner. It does cover all the key points of PeopleSoft Security.A weakness of the book, in my opinion, is it's lack of suggestions for how to use the tool set.Oracles "PeopleBooks" also provides guidance on the tools. This book does do a better job of tools guidance than PeopleBooks, but it'd be a big feature if tactics or strategies for use of the tools were offered.

All in all, this book is worth the investment and is a good reference source.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Expert Guide to PeopleSoft Security
The title may have expert in the name but this book is far from it. The author rehashs the same information ,what little there is, in most of the chapters. All of the data can be found in the 101 PeopleSoft manuals.

I found it very disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Points you in the right direction
My credentials; MBA, PMP, CISSP, CISA, CSSLP

For the price and thickness, I was not expecting much when I purchased this. I must say though, that this little thing was very handy when designing queries to go against the PSoft database. It didn't always have the best answer or exactly what you are looking for, but if you are technically inclined, you can do that on your own. Both myself (a newbie at PSoft) and someone well versed would pop this open and look through the table listings and quickly identify where we needed to go.

I rarely recommend a book, but in this case - for building queries - I would recommend this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars High level, not very detailed
This book offers a very high level overview of Peoplesoft Security. You won't become a security architect overnight (or even in a few weeks) after reading this book. That said, it does do a good job of what it sets out to do.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just The Facts!
Like a navigators chart to a new world this book helps you avoid the shoals and rocks often hidden from view. With stark simplicity and a little forced humor, you are shown all of the paths one might take to reach your security destination. Sounding at times like PS's own introduction to security Mr. Carter leads you through possible routes and why they should be taken. Well worth the $, good to have for a quick reference, especially for those of us who are starting to deal with Senior Moments. ... Read more

Product Description

If you are reading this, you're a genius.

Is that true? Who knows! But it sounds good. So does:

This book is better than ice cream, television, and your birthday combined!

The Facttracker is full of such statements. Unfortunately, most of them are lies, which is odd, since Traäkerfaxx is the town that produces all of the world's facts.

So how can a story about a bizarre town with a weird name become

The greatest novel ever written?

Dinosaurs would help. Or maybe aliens. Alien dinosaurs would be dynamite! Alas, we have none of those. Here's what we do have: the Facttracker, who tracks all the facts in Traäkerfaxx. The just small enough boy, who lost all his facts. And Ersatz, but the less said about him the better. And, of course, there are lots and lots of facts and lies, such as:

This book will make you good-looking and popular!

Was that a fact or a lie? For the answer, read on and encounter adventure, peril, and even more

Large, oversized words!

5-0 out of 5 stars A kid reviewer
[I'm posting this review on behalf of my son Theo, who is nine]

This is a wonderful book!It brings a lot of imagination to a lot of kids. From this book I learned the population of Nebraska quite well!Because I think the author is obsessed with the population of Nebraska, which is 2 million and seven.I liked the story because the Facttracker had a bunch of arguments with the evil Lies in the Liebrary, and Eratze was really evil.I liked how the just small enough boy became the Facttracker at the end.And the old Facttracker went off to Mexico to teach the Mexican hat dance.I recommend this book to all kid readers. It's wonderful!

5-0 out of 5 stars MGM Aquires "The FactTracker" Book
MGM will direct the live action feature film adaptation". "This is an incredibly rich- family-film franchise says producer Shawn Levy ("Night at the Museum" and will partner with Marc Platt. "Fact vs. Fiction, battled out by a slew of dynamic, boldly drawn characters.

The "FactTracker", is a Ronald Dahl-esque fable about Traakerfaxx, a town that gathers all the facts in the world. When a mysterious salesman arrives in town peddling lies, chaos ensues, forcing a young orphan boy with no facts of his own to ream up with the reclusive Facttracker in order to save their town.

A perfect gift for all CEO's and politicians! Kids love the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars a homerun!
All I can say is that my 9 year old daughter LOVED it!! She said this is one of the "most FAVORITE books she has ever read!" (and we all remember our favorites from childhood) Bravo Mr. Eaton, you hit a homerun with this one...hope there is more to come!!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Parable
"The Facttracker" uses its own text as a playground, toying with readers' expectations with hilarious results. Yet underneath all of the jokes and asides is a great lesson about the importance of truth in society. It's both funny and insightful.

5-0 out of 5 stars part roald dahl, part phantom tollbooth
Good book. Really good book. At first I was a little sceptical about the subject: a town that produces facts that turns into a town that produces lies seemed like it might be a bit metaphor-heavy.

But the author's voice, the characters, the jokes, and the insights are really top-drawer. this is easily the most insightful book I've read that doesn't descend into moralizations that will put off most young readers. Plus, it features a flying goldfish. And a pet bullfrog. And some catapults. Highly recommend. ... Read more

From the author: In this article, we argue that Presidents Jimmy Carter and George W. Bush share a distinctive approach to politics and governing: an "evangelical" style of presidential leadership. Though they differed in terms of party and ideology, we claim, using examples from their foreign policies, that the evangelical faith of Carter and Bush provided them with a particular vision of the presidency and the global role of the United States. Richard Neustadt argued that aptitude for politics is the most essential attribute for contemporary presidential success and that the evangelical approach will inevitably lead to political failure. From our analysis of the Carter and Bush approaches to foreign policy, we conclude, however, that in certain circumstances, the evangelical style can contribute to successful presidential leadership and is worthy of further serious study by presidential scholars.

Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A989333. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Heuristic methods of solving exploratory data analysis problems suffer from one major weakness - uncertainty regarding the optimality of the results. The developers of DaMI (Data Mining Initiative), a genetic algorithm designed to mine the CCEP (Comprehensive Clinical Evaluation Program) database in the search for a Persian Gulf War syndrome, proposed a method to overcome this weakness: reproducibility -- the conjecture that consistent convergence on the same solutions is both necessary and sufficient to ensure a genetic algorithm has effectively searched an unknown solution space. We demonstrate the weakness of this conjecture in light of accepted genetic algorithm theory. We then test the conjecture by modifying the CCEP database with the insertion of an interesting solution of known quality and performing a discovery session using DaMI on this modified database. The necessity of reproducibility as a terminating condition is falsified by the algorithm finding the optimal solution without yielding strong reproducibility. The sufficiency of reproducibility as a terminating condition is analyzed by manual examination of the CCEP database in which strong reproducibility was experienced. Ex post facto knowledge of the solution space is used to prove that DaMI had not found the optimal solutions though it gave strong reproducibility, causing us to reject the conjecture that strong reproducibile is a sufficient terminating condition. ... The subject document is actually a reprint of a 1997 Naval Postgraduate Thesis, which followed the original DaMi (Data Miner) project report and publication. The author had limited exposure to and experience with the actual operation of the system, and an even more limited understanding of modern Genetic Algorithm theory.Although an excellent addition to anyone's "Government cover-up of Gulf War Illness" collection, it is an obscure excerpt from the more comprehensive collection of academically peer-reviewed (including IEEE) publications on the subject. ...
