Product Description
Joseph Cornell remains one of the most popular artists of the 20th century. This work provides an insight into the artist's remarkable inner world: a universe populated with empty cages, mirrors, clay pipes, postage stamps, marbles, thimbles and paper scraps, Cornell collected in his basement repository and fashioned into self-contained constructions, montages, collages and films. The artist's relationship to both American and European Romanticism, his involvement with the Surrealist movement, the peculiar mechanics of his work, and a glimpse at his cinematic explorations are accompanied by an illuminating biography and numerous illustrations. This survey brings to life the work of a brilliant artist whose imaginative re-ordering of the world's chaos is still as inspirational as ever. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Joseph Cornell Book
I have read a biography on Joseph Cornell, but this book I bought because of the focus on his art work, which I love. Vast amount of photos showing the diversity and breadth of his boxes and collages. Published in conjunction with the retrospective exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, 1980. A must have for assemblage artists.

4-0 out of 5 stars A decent overview of Joseph Cornell's work
There are only a handful of Joseph Cornell books and if you're a fan, you'll probably end up buying all of them. This one is a bit thin (especially for the original price) but does cover not only the boxes (that I, as others here, had discovered at the Art Institute of Chicago) but his other varied works as well. Film isn't covered as well as the visual arts though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable document from MOMA
Contents include the editor's introduction and four significant essays: "the Trancendental Surrealism of JC" by Dawn Ades; "JC: Mechanic of the Ineffable" by a frenziedly allusive Carter Ratcliffe, which among other things places JC in an American context, amongst Thoreau, Dickinson and the Puritans (!);"The Cinematic Gaze of JC" by P. Adams Sitney, a perceptive and authoritative survey of Cornell's films; and "JC: A Biography" by Lynda Roscoe Hartigan. These texts are heavily illustrated with unique supporting visual material. The plates of Cornell's work are unremarkable but there is the usual impeccable and thorough MOMA bibliography and checklist.

4-0 out of 5 stars If You Like Cornell, You'll Like the Book
I've been a fan of Joseph Cornell ever since I discovered him at the Chicago Art Institute. But, like many of you, I thought all he did was shadowboxes. But, oh no.The rich illustrations showed me treatments, themes, and directions I had no idea the artist had ever worked in.The surprises were rather pleasant.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Compromise
If you seen the work of Joseph Cornell before and loved it then you will find much to learn from in this book. But, I'm not sure readers encountering Cornell for the first time through this book will be won over. The detailed text by McShine is thorough, covering his life, his surrealistbox constructions, collagesand cinema. A huge amount of his work isreproduced, and an extensive bibliography are included. However, most ofthe plates are in black and white, with only a handful of colourphotographs of his work. Moreover, the photographs of his work lack depth,so the three-dimensional tactile qualities of his enigmatic boxconstructions are lost. Perhaps these qualities would be difficult toconvey in any photographs. So, it is not the perfect Joseph Cornell book. But the writing is interesting and I still loved looking at theless-than-ideal reproductions of his work. ... Read more

Product Description

"Let not ambition mock their useful toil, Their homely joys and destiny obscure, Nor grandeur hear with a disdainful smile, The short and simple annals of the poor." _Gray_.

The Counties of Compton and Beauce, in the Province of Quebec, were first opened up to settlement about fifty years ago. To this spot a small colony of Highlanders from the Skye and Lewis Islands gravitated. They brought with them the Gaelic language, a simple but austere religion, habits of frugality and method, and aggressive health. That generation is gone, or almost gone, but the essential characteristics of the race have been preserved in their children. The latter are generous and hospitable, to a fault. Within a few miles of the American frontier, the forces of modern life have not reached them. Shut in by immense stretches of the dark and gloomy "forest primeval," they live drowsily in a little world where passions are lethargic, innocence open-eyed, and vice almost unknown. Science has not upset their belief in Jehovah. God is real, and somewhat stern, and the minister is his servant, to be heard with respect, despite the appalling length of his sermons. Sincerely pious, the people mix their religion with a little whiskey, and the blend appears to give satisfaction. The farmers gather at the village inn in the evening, and over a "drap o' Scotch" discuss the past. As the stimulant works, generous sentiments are awakened in the breast; and the melting songs of Robbie Burns--roughly rendered, it may be--make the eye glisten. This is conviviality; but it has no relation to drunkenness. Every household has its family altar; and every night, before retiring to rest, the family circle gather round the father or the husband, who devoutly commends them to the keeping of God. ... Product Description
CHAPTER I - INTRODUCTORY
NEVER, perhaps, has the alchemy of Greek genius been more potent than in the matter of the Amazonian myth. It has bestowed a charm on the whole amazing story which has been most prolific in its results; but, unfortunately, by tending to confine it to the narrow vistas of poetry, the intensely interesting psychological aspect has been somewhat obscured. Yet to us the chief value of this myth is due rather to the insight it affords into the mental workings of primitive races, the attitude of man towards that which he dreads but does not fully comprehend, than to the influence of Hellenic art and literature, fruitful in beautiful and humanising manifestations though that influence has been. The Greek spirit, indeed, working upon a crude collection of stories, took the sting, out of the lessons they should have taught. For, as we shall endeavour to show, the message of the myth to a people struggling towards a higher civilisation to beware of barbarians and their ways, was softened to an attitude of admiration before physical beauty and courage, and a tender pity for woman, fomenter of strife though she might be.
We may unhesitatingly sweep away the story of the unnatural state about which so many Greek poets and historians entertain us. But while relegating the Amazonian state to the realms of imagination, we must recognise the Amazon herself as a not insignificant historic fact--a fact, indeed, of sufficient moment to have peopled a whole world of fiction, real enough to its original creators, and whose force is hardly spent even now.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Amazons
From the cover:The most potent of all the Greek myths is perhaps that of the Amazons. But the classical legend of a lost tribe of ferocious warrior-women, reputed to kill and devour their male offspring, outlived the scholars of ancient Greece.Whenever the bold ventured into terraincognita over the following centuries, it was the Amazons who lurked in the shadows and were rumoured to be living in the next-but-one village. This book tells the story of our fear of the unknown and our need to give a name to "that which mankind dreads but does not fully comprehend." It traces Amazonian history from the Aegean of the ancient Greeks to Africa, Asia and the Americas in the years after that continent's discovery by Columbus.Enhanced with fine line illustrations, this book will interest not only historians but anyone with a liking for the epic tales of early travellers.[Lately, either the History Channel or Discovery has been airing a special on the descendants of the Amazons - one of which was located in either rural Tibet or Mongolia.Very interesting stuff.] ...
