Product Description

One of the most beloved actors of our time shares the New York Times bestselling story of how he learned to live with an open heart.

Early in his career, shortly after rising to fame as television's Dr. James Kildare, Richard Chamberlain took on the role of Hamlet on the English stage. The play contained a lesson the actor has remembered throughout his life: "To thine own self be true." But for Chamberlain these were not always easy words to live by. Even as he won the adoration of millions of fans, this handsome, charming, debonair leading man seriously questioned his own self–worth, living a life haunted by personal insecurity despite decades of immense popular success in memorable roles in Dr. Kildare, The Thorn Birds, Shogun, and other television dramas. Finally, with the help of friends and guidance from spiritual teachers, including Krishnamurti, Chamberlain began the sometimes painful but deeply rewarding process of reconciling his deepest self with his public persona. Now, in Shattered Love, he poignantly recounts his lifelong struggle to find happiness. Tracing a fascinating path through his meteoric rise to success, he chronicles his struggle to come to terms with his own imperfections, his growing desire to be honest about his sexual orientation, and his yearning to live with an open heart. And along the way he imparts the lessons he has learned about overcoming our own self–imposed obstacles to happiness: the importance of listening to our own instincts instead of listening only to others, not demanding the impossible of ourselves, and allowing ourselves to explore negative feelings in order to move forward.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You Richard
Up until two weeks ago I knew very little about Richard Chamberlain.....I had not seen any of the Dr. Kildare Series or any of his movies except for The Towering Inferior.I did not know that he was also a singer and artist....I did know however about his strained relationship with his father because I once heard Chuck Chamberlain speak..

I am not sure what I was researching on the internet when I happened upon a Richard Chamberlain You Tube video butit caught my interest to the point that I watched all of the Richard Chamberlain You Tube videos that I could find....Purchased Shattered Love, and The Thorn Birds, The Bourne Identity, and Shogun DVD's, and Richard Chamberlain Sings Album....

My Daughter said, "Mom you are really going Richard Chamberlain overboard." ....HAHAHA... She is right....Maybe I should start a Grandma's for Richard Chamberlain fan club....HAHAHA

His singing has a very calming effect on me....I didn't tell my daughter that but had her listen and asked her opinion about his singing and she said, "His voice is very relaxing"...

I totally enjoyed reading his book and found him to be as talented a writer as he is actor, singer, and artist.....

His goodness shines through in all of the movie characters that I saw him play....well maybe not so much in The Towering Inferno.....HAHAHA.....

I can see why Shogun seems to come first on his list of favorite parts....it was the most versatile part ....... it even gave him opportunities to play and laugh.....

Thank you Richard for having the courage to share so much of yourself with others through your book.....A man once told me "We are only as sick as our secrets." And he said that his life is now an open book.

Thank you for choosing to uplift rather than tear down others in your book....

You're a good man Richard Chamberlain and I wish you well always.....Vicky

3-0 out of 5 stars shattered LOVE????
i bought this book believeing that i would find out more about Richard Chamberlain's personal life and loves, but this book disappointed me. It barely speaks about the man that has spent so many years by his side. It's more of a movie disography, more of his accomplishements in his career than his love life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now a Chamberlain fan
This book was not particularly earth-shattering, however it was well written and gave insight to a nice man and his life. Especially enjoyable was Chamberlain interaction with readers with side-note comments of their perceived thoughts of what he was writing. Amazing that I have never seen a Richard Chamberlain movie and barely remember watching him as "Dr. Kildare" - now I have a new list of must-watch movies!

5-0 out of 5 stars Shattered Love: A Memoir
This books is a review of a life that grows and grows. Richard Chamberlain should have been a writter, he is an intellectual all the way. He is funny and sad, this book reads like a great novel of the movie industry. Please Richard share with us more of your thoughts on life!

3-0 out of 5 stars Waiting for Shattered Love - The Missing Years
Shattered Love:- A Memoir:I barely remember watching Richard Chamberlain in his Dr. Kildare series.I became enthralled with him though after watching The Thorn Birds in 1983. This mini-series was aired again recently, and I was quite surprised by my reaction to Richard Chamberlain, the amazingly handsome man that he still is. I then decided to read his memoir, without expectations.I already knew of his sexual orientation.

His book reveals a traumatic childhood over-shadowed by an alcoholic father, events of his film and stage career, but I was left wanting more. The book reads like the first Thorn Birds mini-series, with big gaps of years and details that I believe a true Chamberlain fan would want to know about.I didn't expect the private details of his personal life, but I was left disappointed at the end of his memoir. Without judgement, I respect Mr. Chamberlain as a human-being. Actors and other celebrities are too often held to an impossible higher standard of reputation and life-style choices. I would like to see the 'Missing Years' of this memoir. ... Read more

This is a study of Austen Chamberlain's term of office as Stanley Baldwin's Foreign Secretary from 1924-29. Product Description
This work features illustrations of textiles for fashion (including headscarves) and furnishings designed by artists living or working in Britain for British companies during the period 1945-1970. This was a time of belief in "art for the people" in the new democratic spirit of post-war Britain and has parallels in other media such as school prints. A comprehensive introduction by Richard Chamberlain and Geoff Rayner puts the period in its context, giving a historical perspective and covering contemporary events such as the "Painting into Textiles" exhibition at the ICA in 1953. ... Product Description
What skills and competencies are needed in today's workplaces and other social environments, and how can they best be studied and promoted? The answers to these and other related questions lie in a variety of disciplines, and this multidisciplinary study under the auspices of the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), carried out by the Swiss Federal Statistical Office and the Education Statistics Services of the American Institutes of Research, provides a theoretical and conceptual basis for the mass of empirical findings that are currently being generated. This volume brings together contributions from international authorities, providing a comprehensive overview of advances and conceptions of life skills and key competencies from a variety of perspectives: historical, philosophical, psychological, sociological, economic and anthropological. Other chapters synthesize these views, looking at common ground with regard to functioning in groups, epistemology, and policy and practice in the real world. The final chapter presents a coherent framework which can be used in further work. ... Read more

Product Description

How was frontier expansion rationalized in the Americas during the late nineteenth century? As new states fleshed out expanded national maps, how did they represent their advances? Were there any distinct pan-American patterns? The renowned anthropologist and human rights advocate David Maybury-Lewis saw the Latin American frontiers as relatively unknown physical spaces as well as unexplored academic “territory.” He invited eight specialists to explore public narratives of the expansion of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and the western regions of Canada and the United States during the late nineteenth century, a time when those who then identified as “Americans” claimed territories in which indigenous peoples, who were now seen as economic and political obstacles, lived. The authors examine the narrative forms that stirred or rationalized expansion, and emphasize their impact on the native residents.

The authors illustrate the variety and the similarities of these nationalist ideas and experiences, which were generally expressed in symbolic and cultural terms rather than on simple materialist or essentialist grounds. The cases also point out that civic nationalism, often seem as inclusive and more benign than ethnic nationalism, can produce similarly destructive human and cultural ends. The essays thus suggest a view of nationalism as a theoretical concept, and of frontier expansion as a historical phenomenon.

Excerpt: John Wilfrid Hinde (19161998) was an English photographer whose idealistic and nostalgic style influenced the art of postcard photography and was widely known for his meticulously planned shoots. Born in Somerset, England, his interest in colour photography arose during the 1940s. From the later half of the 1940s to the middle half of the 1950s, he entered the circus life, where he met his future wife. However, he soon returned to photography and, in 1956, he left the circus and founded John Hinde Ltd. in Dublin to produce and distribute his colour pictures of Ireland. Hinde's most famous work is that of the Butlin's Holiday Camps, in which he portrayed a welcoming and jubilant environment. In 1972, he sold his company in order to pursue his love of painting. The Irish Museum of Modern Art recognized his work with a retrospective in Dublin in 1993. In 1998, Hinde died in Dordogne, France. At the time of his death, millions of his postcards had been sold worldwide. In 1916, Hinde was born in the town of Street in Somerset, England, in a close-knit Quaker community. He stuck to his Quaker values during the war by becoming a photographer for the civil defence forces instead of a soldier. Some of his photography was published in colour magazines and books, such as Of Cabbages and Kings, Citizens of War, and British Circus Life. His interest in photography would lead him to become an important pioneer in colour photographs. Hinde briefly switched professions when he became a circus publicity manager in 1944. Here, he met his wife Antoina Falnoga, a trapeze artist who was part of the circus. In 1954, he and ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=12154864 ... Read more

Excerpt: Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (September 8, 1828 February 24, 1914) was an American college professor from the State of Maine, who volunteered during the American Civil War to join the Union Army. Although having no earlier education in military strategies, he became a highly respected and decorated Union officer, reaching the rank of brigadier general (and brevet major general). For his gallantry at Gettysburg, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. He was given the honor of commanding the Union troops at the surrender ceremony for the infantry of Robert E. Lee's Army at Appomattox, Virginia. After the war, he entered politics as a Republican and served four one-year terms of office as the 32nd Governor of Maine. He served on the faculty of, and as president of, his alma mater, Bowdoin College. Joshua Chamberlain was born in Brewer, Maine, to Joshua and Sarah Dupee Chamberlain, the oldest of five children. He entered Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, in 1848, after teaching himself to read Ancient Greek in order to pass the entrance exam. While at Bowdoin he met many people who would influence his life, including Harriet Beecher Stowe, the wife of a Bowdoin professor. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good For Easy Recipes - Highly Recommended
"The Cookbook for Men Who Must" is a collection of man friendly dishes that are well thought out and include very clear directions and color pictures that even I could follow. The philosophy of the author, Richard Chamberlain, is "Everything in Moderation" and it is a reoccurring theme throughout the book which encourages using less fat, less sugar, and taking smaller portions. While little of this can be considered health food, most of the recipes are scaled back in the "bad" stuff, with the notable exception of the last chapter (and you are repeatedly advised not to read the last chapter).

The Introduction, Getting Started, and Meal Planning chapters include your first exposure to his cooking philosophy (often alluded to in the following chapters) and a brief discussion on equipment, ingredients, and cooking in his style.

The actual recipe chapters include Breakfasts, Appetizers/Snacks,Salads, Side Dishes, Main Courses, Desserts, and "Don't Even Go Here". All of the recipes are practical and several include suggestions for variations. I found the "Fried Chicken with Onions and Mushrooms" (page 66) to produce very good results (but I didn't add the mushrooms) and was the perfect meal for my night to cook.

Being diabetic, the pictures and descriptions in the "Don't Even Go Here" chapter almost sent me into a coma.

I also like that the cover of the book is glossy, which allows it to wiped off when it gets messy in the kitchen, and this pagers are spiral bound so it lays flat, which makes it possible to leave open while following the recipes.

While the final picture is amusing, especially considering the picture on the cover, it should only be viewed on an empty stomach.

Highly Recommended!
