Product Description
An Academy Award-nominated actor and a renowned human rights activist team up to change the tragic course of history in the Sudan -- with readers' help

While Don Cheadle was filming Hotel Rwanda, a new crisis had already erupted in Darfur, in nearby Sudan. In September 2004, then-Secretary of State Colin Powell termed the atrocities being committed there "genocide" -- and yet two years later things have only gotten worse. 3.5 million Sudanese are going hungry, 2.5 million have been displaced by violence, and 400,000 have died in Darfur to date.

Both shocked and energized by this ongoing tragedy, Cheadle teamed up with leading activist John Prendergast to focus the world's attention. Not on Our Watch, their empowering book, offers six strategies readers themselves can implement: Raise Awareness, Raise Funds, Write a Letter, Call for Divestment, Start an Organization, and Lobby the Government. Each of these small actions can make a huge difference in the fate of a nation, and a people -- not only in Darfur, but in other crisis zones such as Somalia, Congo, and northern Uganda. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Read and Help
This book is an excellent read and should be a standard to all high school and college students.

4-0 out of 5 stars Motivating and Inspiring
The book Not on Our Watch: The Mission to End Genocide in Darfur and Beyond written by Don Cheadle and John Prendegast delves into the actions behind the crimes in Sudan and the myriads of tragedies that have occurred as a consequence.Cheadle recently played the leading role in Hotel Rwanda, a movie that documented a similar genocide between the Tutsies and the Hutus. Both authors share their in-depth personal experiences from their missions trip to Darfur in hopes to draw attention to the Sudanese militias' and the Janjaweeds' transgressions.Although both writers give detailed accounts of their time in Chad and Sudan, neither seem unbiased when presenting their facts and tend to exaggerate what they have seen in hopes to create a more heart-wrenching read.Overall, NOOW is motivating and inspiring, leaving the reader wanting to make a difference

4-0 out of 5 stars Not on our watch
Darfur is where the world's conscious is dying! This is a story of tragedy and suffering on an epic scale. Not On Our Watch: The Mission to End Genocide in Darfur and Beyond is the critically acclaimed book by Don Cheadle and John Prendergast.
Cheadle first became aware of the conflict in Darfur conflict while filming Hotel Rwanda. Shocked and energised by the scale of the emerging crisis, he set about raising awareness of the Darfur conflict with John Prendergast, a former advisor to Bill Clinton.
The authors have travelled to the refugee camps on the Sudanase /Chad border to pay witness to the unfolding tragedy which has claimed the lives of 250,000 people and displaced a further 2 million.
In this heartfelt and moving book, Cheadle and Prendergast challenge readers to become politically active and help prevent the genocide from continuing.
It's a good read, albeit heart-wrenching. It's a must-read to know how to help and make a difference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Genocide in Darfur
An extremely informative book that isn't for the person who wants to read a story with a happy ending.Hopefully that will be in a sequel, but this book documents the atrocities and the events leading up to them.It reads like a journal from both authors, even at the times when you are left feeling overwhelmed you should keep reading as you learn that silence doesn't aid the victims. There are suggestions for the reader who feels helpless yet wants to participate in the campaign to stop the genocide. It is important to read this and pass it on to others; my purchase led to others becoming involved in their own way. This book is not light reading, but I was impressed that people are working vigilantly for the greater good.Kudos to those who are working beyond their borders to bring about positive change.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good read.
This book does a good job of providing you with a decent understanding of what is going on in Darfur, Sudan. Furthermore what the book excels at is showing you the ongoing movement to end the genocide in Darfur. It will piss you off, make you angry, make you ask a lot of questions but it will ultimately frustrate you.If this is an intro to the situation in Darfur you will not finish this book fully understanding the situation and all factors involved. If you plan to delve deeper you will need to read additional materials. However, if you would like a basic understanding with a depiction of the anti-genocide movement, this book is for you.

Definitely a good read for the more knowledgeable as well. Either way you won't be disappointed with this book. Just don't expect to read itunderstand all and have a solution to the conflict. That is not what this book is for. It does provide you with insight and suggested solutions from one of the leading Africa experts, John Prendergast. If you don't know his work you should check it out.

I suggest for a good follow up or just in general you check out www.enoughproject.org ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helping bring an end to atrocities
You already know these two men.Prendergast has been working for years to stop the atrocities being committed in Darfur, and has often been seen in newscasts from the Sudan and elsewhere. You remember Cheadle as the hero in the movie "Hotel Rwanda".Here they are focussing on three issues: Genocide in Darfur, Child Soldier Recruitment in Uganda under the Lord's ResistanceArmy, and Rape as a Weapon of War in Eastern Congo. In each case they describe the situation, and give ample testimony from "Upstanders" who stand up for a solution to the issue.

They emphasize that people who think that Africa is hopeless will see no point in getting active, and therefore must be made to realize that Africa is not hopeless, and things have actually been accomplished through activism, such as saving lives, supporting peacemaking, indicting war criminals, deploying peacekeepers, and removing genocide from stock portfolios. They recount the lives of many success stories and the people behind them, such as Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, Desmond Tutu of South Africa, and Wangari Maathai of Kenya.

On the Congo segment they underline two organizations that have been involved: Stop Raping Our Greatest Resource: Power to the Women and Girls of the Congo, and Raise Hope for Congo, which is coordinated by the Enough Project. There are many Congolese Upstanders portrayed, and among the American ones are Lisa Jackson, whose excellent film "The Greatest Silence" you have seen, Ben Affleck who also did a film on Congo, and Angelina Jolie.

The book concludes with 14 practical suggestions as to what readers may do to join in the fight for justice in the Sudan, Uganda, and the Congo. You are urged to contact [...]

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
An important follow up book to Not on Our Watch...that engages the reader and moves them to action! Its a must read for anyone who both wants to understand what's happening in the region...and more importantly what we can do as Americans to help end these horrific human rights abuses in Africa. I like that he added information regarding Uganda and the Congo into this book...creating a larger base to pull from. Well done!

This is the second book by John Prendergast, who has worked on human rights issues for over 25 years, and actor Don Cheadle, whose interest in the conflicts in Africa increased when he played the lead character in the movie Hotel Rwanda.

The book is about creating "enough" moments for each person - the moment when a person says, "this is enough, I'm going to do something about this situation". The situations they emphasize in the book are the genocide in Darfur, the abduction of children to be soldiers and/or sexual slaves, and the use of rape as a weapon of war. A lot of the book concerns Congo, where millions have died, millions more displaced, and many, many women raped repeatedly, often left with physical damage and unwanted babies.

The book can be very hard to read, because it talks about horrors that equal those perpetrated by the Nazis. Yet while portraying the very worst humans are capable of, it also tells many stories about the best of humanity. People who have been victims of terrible evil yet are not only surviving, they are determined to help others and do. There are also stories of people who have not been victims, but when hearing of the atrocities have done something, whatever they can, to help the situation.

Almost all of us bear some responsibility for these atrocities, as much of the conflicts are over access to minerals that go in our laptops and cell phones. So one thing that most of us could do is to encourage companies that manufacture electronics to use conflict-free minerals.

It is also a practical book, in that it lists things that each of us could do to help the situation. One I liked a lot is to write letters to some of the women who have been raped, then rejected by their families. Hearing from someone who cares can mean a lot in their lives. At the end of the book is a list of resources, organizations that are doing practical things to improve the situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful and inspiring book
The social entrepreneurship organization Echoing Green has just published a book designed to inspire young people to consider careers in the nonprofit sector. The book, Be Bold, tells the stories of 12 nonprofit leaders who typify the core elements of being bold: experiencing a moment of obligation (committing to what you feel is important), having the gall to think big, trying new and untested approaches to solving problems, and seeing possibilities where others may not. The book has a useful set of worksheets that can help you figure out what being bold means to you, and how to put it into action.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!Amazing book
This book is inspirational! It documents the lives of twelve outstanding leaders in the nonprofit sector and shows the reader that boldness is in all of us. I found it to be a satisfying read that motivated me to examine myself and realize that I have the potential to create social change.

I would recommend this as a career guide to anyone interested in the non profit sector, human rights or social justice issues. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great mystery with an authentic background
This works both as engrossing mystery with a pair of engaging characters. Paris and Fearless are as engaging a pair as Mosley's Easy Rawlins and Mouse. The highlight of the story for me is the reaction of bookdealer Paris upon discovering a family journal dating from the days of slavery, the "McGuffin" of the mystery. This is indeed a worthy sequel to FEARLESS JONES.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not so simple
Paris Minton is a simple man living a simple life.A black man in LA, owner of a bookstore, he keeps to himself for the most part, unless he's tied up with his best friend Tristan "Fearless" Jones. One night Fearless knocks on his door, when Paris hears, the knock he hears trouble.Though his friend lives as his name says, Paris is a polar opposite. On this particular night, Fearless tells his Paris that a woman, Leora and her child Son need help finding her husband Kit Mitchell, the "watermelon man", whom Fearless has worked for.Fearless is a principled man and cannot say no to a woman with a crying child. He lets his friend know that he needs his help in finding this man. Little do either of them know that finding Kit Mitchell, will be the least of their worries.A little mentioned murder a woman named Minna Wexler becomes part of a string of murders that Paris and Fearless happen upon.

Through police harassments, attempts on their lives, dealings with the white elite (Maestro Wexler), the black elite (Winifred Fine) and a series of lowlifes, crazies and down on their luck folks leads them in directions that they had not though of before. Both intelligent in seemingly different ways, the team of Fearless Jones and Paris Minton get way more than they bargain for but working together are able to get through an increasing difficult task.

In this Fearless Jones mystery, Walter Moseley shows why he is one of the great writers of our time. The stories he tells of friendship and the trouble that comes with it are timeless. He shows us, in the case of Fearless and Paris that two heads are better than one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rhapsody in Noir (Continued)
Fear Itself wonderfully lives up to the superb quality of Fearless Jones, which began this series. If you haven't read Fearless Jones, I recommend reading that book first.

Fearless Jones is the finest new mystery I have read in decades. Its qualities place it alongside classics like The Maltese Falcon, while its deep exploration of human nature causes it to transcend the mystery genre. The story's subtle psychology reminds me of an ancient Greek drama. This book represents a new peak in the imagination and the writing of the immensely talented Mr. Walter Mosley. You have a rare treat in store. Start this book early in the day. You probably won't want to put it down.

Like the frozen expressions on Greek tragedians' masks, Fearless Jones considers three kinds of human motivation: The self-interested satisfaction of the senses; the rational mind assembling the pieces of a puzzle; and good character that comes the heart. The narration builds from the rational mind and conveys all of the classic elements of the best noir mysteries. Mosley's point is that good character will naturally triumph because of the finer emotions and responses it will evoke in others. I suspect that you will agree with him, and feel uplifted by this tale despite the plot's pathway through many dark alleys of depravity.

Few writers can take you inside the mind and body of the characters like Mr. Mosley. In both Fearless Jones and Fear Itself, you will think and feel along with Paris Minton, the owner of a used bookstore in Watts in the mid-1950s. Minton is a largely self-educated black man from Louisiana who came to California to find libraries that were open to all. His store's books are discards from local libraries. He has achieved a fragile kind of peaceful life, living and working in his bookstore (and reading when there are no customers, which is often).

His friend, Fearless Jones, is the archetype of the medieval knight errant . . . always looking to do a good deed. In Fear Itself, Fearless (Tristan) Jones wakes Paris up in the middle of the night because Fearless has promised to help a woman Fearless had never met before, Leora Hartman, who was holding the hand of a three year-old who was crying his eyes out. A World War II hero, the two met when Minton spontaneously bought Jones a drink during the post-war celebration. "He appreciated my generosity and gave me a lifetime of friendship for a single shot of scotch." As you can see, Mr. Mosley writes like an angel.

The book revolves around a missing farmer from Wayne, Texas, Kit Mitchell, who has been hiring Fearless to distribute his watermelons. The mystery soon adds more missing people and items, and other people who want to pay Paris and Fearless to find whatever is missing. However, people are more willing to pay than to describe what they are supposed to be looking for. Whatever it is, it's dynamite!

The story reminds me The Big Sleep in a positive way.

No review of this book would be complete without observing that Mr. Mosley again demonstrates an unbelievable ability for capturing the black experience in Southern California in the post-war period. He has an equally uncanny skill for weaving a personalized view of that vulnerable, hopeful footing into the fabric of the overall society during those years. I think that Fear Itself is his most imaginative work in this regard. He adds richness to black heritage in an unforgettable and intriguing way. As much as I enjoyed the story, these heritage elements overshadowed the mystery completely.

After you finish reading the book, I suggest that think back to the many moments of spontaneous kindness in the story. How did you feel when you read them? How would you feel if someone behaved in this way towards you? When was the last time that you offered the fullness of your heart's purest motives to a stranger or near-stranger? How would you feel if you did so more often? Who are you? Who could you be? Who do you want to be?

While I enjoyed the Easy books, I prefer the new characters of the Fearless Jones books.I purchased this book on unabridged audio while on a business trip, and soon lost all bearings on the road.Don Cheadle is a masterful reader, combining the many voices seamlessly on CD.The audio quality is superb. We are taken through many eccentric characters, including Paris Minton, the first.Fearless Jones, his best friend and co-conspirator in his adventures, is a man expertly skilled in the art of survival in racist Los Angeles in 1955.I won't divulge the plot, but their adventures take them into the world of black wealth and white criminals. It is Mr. Moseley's mix of humor-Paris's self-professed weaknesses-with a labyrinthine plot that kept me listening for the many hours required. In the couple of months since I purchased the book I have listened to it again, simply for the pleasure of Mr. Cheadle's voice.I have since purchased his third Fearless Jones mystery on CD and am awaiting shipment on the first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fearless II
This is Walter Mosley's second Fearless Jones novel. Somehow I missed the first. The premise of the book is that the narrator is a bookstore owner from Watts named Paris Minton. Tristan "Fearless" Jones is his friend and sometime partner. The current book is set in mid-50s Los Angeles, the setting that made Mosley his reputation with the Easy Rawlins series. Fear Itself is apparently Mosley's path back to where he enjoys setting his stories the most: pre-Civil Rights movement LA.

In Fear Itself, Paris is awakened in the middle of the night, first by Fearless, then by a mysterious man looking for Fearless. Paris is suspicious of white guys banging on his door at three in the morning, so he lies and says he doesn't know where Fearless is. Soon, the two men are on the hunt for various people among the black neighborhoods of LA, tripping over dead bodies of rich white people, and getting shot at by that mysterious fellow, who's apparently pretty homicidal. The plot of this story has more twists and turns than a plate of spaghetti, but it's all good fun and the characters are entertaining.

I enjoyed this book a great deal, and would recommend it. ... Read more
