3-0 out of 5 stars not so sure
my only problem with this video is you dont get to see the entire concert from start to finish.....the vhs version you do.......on dvd you get the cutdown version that was on tv......

the extras are great, but if im purchasing a live concert, i wanna see it as tho' i was in the audience......not chopped up and put in a different form......

4-0 out of 5 stars Cher at the Mirage
Now this video was from a few years back but Cher still knew how to wow and entertain and audence. This is a must dvd for all Cher fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Attn: CHER collectors!
This is a treasure for Cher collectors of all ages. There are actually two concerts on this dvd!First, there is the CBS special, then there is a specail feature on the dvd that allows you to watch the "rehearsal" of the cbs special.Cher in her normal everyday wear and sounding fabulous.Only drawback is the video footage of the rehearsal show is not professional, but it is a keepsake for CHER fans everywhere!A must have. There are also extras; crew footage describing Cher in food terms, commercial for the tour, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cher: A First Class Entertainer!
I saw this concert in person while she was touring the US in the early 90's and it was a thrill to see her in person working the stage like no other female entertainer today! She really makes an effort not just to perform well, but to connect with each person. I was thoroughly entertained and that's why I purchased the DVD. Her rendition of "Many Rivers To Cross" was so heartfelt, it brought me to tears. I could relate!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not your typical Cher show
This is a DVD of a TV special. It's missing a couple of songs. My firs impressions of Cher were from seeing the Believe Tour on DVD and the Farewell tour twice in person and on DVD. This DVD is a step down. Granted, it's from 15 years ago (or so) when concert technology wasn't as cutting edge as it is today. I found this concert to be kind of a snoozer as far as a Cher show goes. ... Read more

Product Description
She's a singer, comedian, Academy Award-winning actress, and one of America's most popular and enduring stars. She's "a funny, gutsy woman" who is "genuine" and "down to earth" (The New York Times). She is Cher.

As part of the singing duo "Sonny and Cher," she was noted for her offbeat beauty.

As a star of television's The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, she blossomed into one of America's most glamorous women. She went on to prove herself as an actress while maintaining her singing career and raising two children. Now, in the book The First Time, Cher allows readers a view of some hilarious, tragic, and shocking moments as she recalls:

  • First memories of her mother
  • First bra
  • First kiss
  • First bad boy (Gregg Allman)
  • First time she learned her daughter was gay
  • First eulogy (for Sonny)

Told in Cher's inimitable way, with dozens of photographs, most from her own albums, The First Time is a frank, funny, surprising, outrageous, sometimes sad, and always boldly honest depiction of a woman as irrespressible as she is impossible to resist.Amazon.com Review
Sonny Bono once said that Cher was so stupid that she thoughtthe moon was the back side of the sun. Well, if he had lived to readthis book he would be eating those very mean words. Cher had manyfirst times in her life, and she puts them all down on paper here. For example, Cher shares her thoughts on politics in the sectionentitled "My First Allergic Reaction to Republicans." Here, shecomments that Jackie Kennedy was much better looking than MamieEisenhower. How could anyone vote for Nixon, wonders Cher, when he wasso "creepy" and his wife was "pinchy-faced"? But Cher thinks aboutmore than just politics. There's also the first time she had sex withan Italian, the first time she had sex with a "bad boy" and the firsttime she had sex with a "mook." Cher even has something to say aboutclothing. If you're looking for a book that's hard to read, lookelsewhere, but if you want the inside scoop on the depths of Cher'sthoughts, served up in one-page essays, this is the book foryou. --James DiGiovanna ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "The Ultimate Cher Book"
"The First Time" is Cher's autobiography, written by her, yet told to writer Jeff Coplon. The book is a well-written account of one of the biggest celebrities in American history. Cher's writes about her life from the time she was born up until the book's publication in 1998.

In these pages Cher writes about meeting her dad for the first time when she was 11, her love of "West Side Story", singing back-up for Phil Spector in the sixties, her ultimate meeting with Sonny Bono at 16 and how he changed her life forever, her TV variety show with Sonny, the birth of her children, that terrible time in the early eighties when her records stopped selling and she thought her career was over, her eventual movie success and winning the Academy Award as Best Actress in 1988, and her comeback with music in the early nineties, plus much more.

"The First Time" is also filled with beautiful color and black and white photos and written the only wayCher knows how to write: with untamed humor that her ardent fans love.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading "The First Time" which is a better-than-average biography on a superstar.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you love Cher, you will love this book.
If you love Cher you will love this. She is an amazing woman and this book is a revealing look into her life and private moments. For those fans who just can't get enough, you will love this.

1-0 out of 5 stars Outrageously boring
One has to be a rabid Cher fan to think this piece of drivel is good. It is so distracting... The first time this, the first time that, that before long I found it as enjoyable as abdominal surgery. Could not finish it. Don't waste your time with so many excellent autobiographies out there. STINKS.

Genre: Autobiography
Star Rating: *****

There is a first time for everything. Wouldn't you say the first time is the best. It is the most fun, the scariest, the happiest, the hardest, the most exciting. The second or third time you do something, you know what to expect, you know what it is going to be like.
In The First Time Cher tells true first time stories that shaped her life.

This amazing autobiography has all the detailed perspectives Cher had on her life journey of fame. You may be able to relate to some of these events, even if Cher is a big star, you know what the first time feels like. She has feelings like you and me, which she lets out in her stories.

Cher does an amazing job of making you feel like you lived all of her experiences right next to her. It is a factual, yet interesting book that any Cher fan would love. She loves to tell her stories how they were. Even if there were some bad words included. She has an amazing memory of what happened-exactly.

After reading this book, I feel like I know Cher. She does an amazing job of telling all the details that mad Cher, Cher. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The photography is engaging and Cherlooks amazing
If the movie reaches the level of these photographs,or the descriptions by the director Steven Antin-then the movie will be great entertainment. The director has had a love affair with the old art of true burlesque, and has gone to great lengths to transform his passion to this movie. There are plenty of pictures here to illustrate the film and please fans of all the stars. I for one am really thankful to see Cher at the helm of this project and chuckled when she described the coaching of tears out of Christina. The book is a good deal for the money! The paper is nice and all the actors have great shots of their performances.

5-0 out of 5 stars dernier voyage, dernier amour...
... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars If You Don't Know Painter This book makes sure you do
This book covers every aspect of Painter as far as I am concerned . I am a novice and there is so much to learn . this book explains it in an easy to understand fashion .

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Manual for Painter 11
Applications such as Corel Painter and Adobe Photoshop have evolved to the point where manuals have become huge help systems delivered electronically. While they tell you how to do things, they can't possibly spend the time or space to say why or when you might wish to use a tool or employ a layer, much less how to integrate an entire process to create artwork. The free market has stepped in and provided us with a few very talented authors writing top-notch books. And in my opinion, in the field of Painter nothing outshines "The Painter WOW! Book" series.

Those that purchase a license for any application typically follow an upgrade path as the program grows. Most Painter 9 users are now upgraded to Painter 11, for example. They upgrade because systems and applications get more sophisticated and capable, faster and more versatile. Software engineers do not abandon previous code, but instead build upon the foundation of previous editions of the software, giving users a better and more evolved product with each release. Users do not have to relearn everything from scratch, thankfully.

Books about the application follow the same path. Just as each line of code is evaluated, so is each line of a book. Examples of "how-to" are put into perspective of any new development, and when new processes are put into the application, new exercises detailing those processes are included in the book. Readers of Peachpit Press' WOW! Book series purchase new editions of the books because each new issue is clear, pertinent to the specific release, thoroughly edited and very well written.

The Painter 11 WOW! Book is not a reinvention of previous editions. It is a careful re-evaluation and update reflecting the upgrades in Painter. Every single page is revised, the new features in Painter 11 are showcased with brand-new primers and projects, and many of the projects about classic features or techniques are redone with new art, just for the love of doing it and for the interest of previous readers.

One of the favorite parts of The WOW! Books for many are the galleries, where many of the best artists are showcased. Most of the galleries at the end of the chapters are new, and the quality of the art simply gets better and better with each issue as the program and the user base get more versatile. The examples of how others use Painter is inspiring to me as an artist and the respect I have for other contributing artists grows deeper with every edition.

Cher's coverage of each aspect of Painter is what has made The Painter WOW! Book series superlative. The new features of Painter 11 are assimilated throughout the book as well as through their own pages. The new Hard Media brushes and Brush building dialog is not only covered, but utilized in drawing the now familiar orchid adorning the front cover. The new transform abilities are thoroughly covered, as are the changes to color palettes, color management and more.

If you're new to Painter books, you can't go wrong with The Painter 11 WOW! Book. You'll learn how to use the application if you're a beginner, and if you're an experienced user you'll either learn new tricks or twists on methods perhaps you've not considered. In my own development, Cher's series was integral to understanding Painter, and my worn copies betray how much I have leaned on her contributions to my education over the years. There's no way I would be where I am without "The Painter WOW! Book" series.

-----------
Disclaimer: Cher and I co-wrote "Beyond Digital Photography: Transforming Photos into Fine Art with Photoshop and Painter," also published by Peachpit Press. I've also contributed work to "The Painter WOW! Book" (and the other WOW! Books) for many editions. Like all of the contributors, I do not receive any compensation beyond thanks and the notes of occasional readers.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hardly anything's changed from the last version!
I loved the Painter 10 Wow! book; therefore I was very eagerly awaiting the version 11 book; boy, was I disappointed.Almost all of the artwork used in the examples hasn't changed from the version 10 book!I have a few other Painter v11 books from other authors, and they did provide fresh examples of how to use the program.Sure, the Painter 11 Wow! book is great on it's own, but again, that's only because it's nearly a carbon copy of the previous version!I was really irked and this book is definitely getting returned right away.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Painter 11 WOW! Book -- an excellent "Rosetta Stone" for Painter
I have been using Painter since 1994. I routinely use many other graphics applications, but Painter remains the backbone of my medical illustration work.

Painter is so feature rich, it would be easy to overlook many of the things it can do. Cher Threinen-Pendarvis, with the newest edition of her Painter WOW! series -- The Painter 11 WOW! Book -- has once again created a beautifully designed and easily accessible roadmap to unleashing the power of Painter.

I recommend this book for Painter beginners, as well as for longtime users.

A methodical chapter-by-chapter reading will take the Painter user through a logical, delightful journey of discovery. And yet, a random opening to any page is likely to reveal a gem of unexpected serendipity and insight.

Chapter 8, "Exploring Special Effects," is a terrific resource. It includes valuable how-to's on creating mosaics, fractal patterns, glass distortion, "dynamic layers" effects (which remain changeable after they're created), realistic-looking weave patterns on fabric folds, and other effects. The special effects of how to make an "environmental map," a "a terrain map," a "circular panorama" and "seamless patterns" are ones of which I've made excellent use -- exporting them into my 3D Animation application as texture maps, environmental maps, and bump maps.

I'm most grateful to the author for putting together this compendium of information, and that I have at my fingertips such a valuable resource.

Disclosure: I am one of the artists included in the book. But I receive no monetary compensation for inclusion in the book, or for this review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great instructional book
This is a fully illustrated - easy to understand - and exciting book on the Painter 11 program. Painter is an easy to use program for the digital painter, but like Photoshop, has much power and depth that the user might not be aware of unless they purchase Painter11 Wow. It breaks down the functions of the software into specific tasks and then shows how to accomplish each of them. Then - and this is key - Ms Pendarvis gives examples created by various artists using one or more of these techniques. ... Read more

Customer Reviews (1)

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
Okay- so it's a good book. But when you read this book, does the word "unrealistic" come to mind? I mean, come on! The outline of this book is okay. Cher, a teenage girl who lives in Beverly Hills meets a, in the words of Cher, "fiercely props, pectorally abled, romance-book cover boy, Troy" and finds that she can win a dream date with him by writing a five thousand word love story. Soon, it becomes a class project, splitting into groups. Inspired by her own father's story of his first love, Ina Klein, she and her peers set to work on writing a new and improved version of the tear-jerking love story of how Jason and Neve were once in love, and Jason was too poor for Neve in the eyes of her father, and eventually when Neve moves away, Jason vows to become an even better and more succesful business man than Neve's father was, and eventually succeeds. Neve, devestated, later changes her name to Nosaj Neerg, Jason Green spelled backwards, and becomes a writer. One day, when Jason holds the book to the mirror, he sees what really happened, and they all live happily ever after. Well, obviously, Cher's story is chosen to be sent to Ani K. Niel, the author of romance novels. Well, Cher meets up with a "way props hunk", Brandon, who helps her put the ideas onto paper. Then, Ani K. calls Cher up and wants to meet her. Thinking that they've won the contest, the whole gang shows up and Ani K. speaks to Cher in private. Cher then finds out that Ani K. is really Ina Klein, except she reversed her name.(Ani K. Niel, Ina Klein?) Cher has to keep this a secret, and when her best friend, Di, finds out something's up and Cher won't tell her, she gets sizzling mad. Cher promises Di that she'll tell her later, and, of course, she does. She also arranges it so that Ani K. can meet up with her father once more at her friend Summer's parents' anniversary party. Then she and Brandon hook up, as do Ani, or Ina and Mel, Cher's father, do. So like I said, it was a good book. But why wasn't it five stars, you ask? Well the tiny details of how it was worded, it made Cher and her friends sound either like aliens from another planet, extremely haughty popular girls, or both. Here's an excerpt to show you what I mean: " "Your highlights? Wake up and smell the Clairol, girlfriend," De objected. "That is so not all the buckskin wearin' babe was impressed with. That hair quiz was just a lame ploy to snag your number. Cher, you are so the props Neve, a youuthful Cindy, a Demi unhindered by Bruce and babies." " Is it just me when I say we might as well get subtitles to understand this stuff? Thus, the four stars. Not to say I didn't enjoy this book, it was great. Just not..."competent", I guess the word is, enough to meet my standards of flawless reading material. But, nevertheless, I reccomend it greatly. That enough of a review? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Too bad it's out of print!
Although this book was written for the Christian market, there is nothing preachy about it.It truly is, as the subtitle states, a practical guide to pregnancy and childbirth, from nutrition and exercise to things you might consider if you decided to give birth at home. The book has short chapters and it is a quick, easy read (as compared with other intensive, technical childbirth manuals). As a childbirth preparation instructor of many years, I highly recommend it. ... Product Description

Based on a heroic true story

The soldier held the little creature gently with both hands.

In the dim light, he carefully attached the message to the bird’s leg.

He called out the bird’s name: “Cher Ami. Dear Friend, go safely. Save us!”

Fly, Cher Ami, fly!

Cher Ami was one of six hundred carrier pigeons used by the American Army during World War I. Riveting text by award-winning author Robert Burleigh and lush illustrations by Robert MacKenzie capture the intrepid story of his most famous flight. A tale of triumph and bravery, Fly, Cher Ami, Fly! tells the true story of a heroic pigeon who, against all odds, helped rescue a lost battalion of soldiers and left an unforgettable mark on American history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching Children's Story Based on An Actual Event
For Americans living in 1918, the last year of World War I, the legend of the "Lost Battalion" was a household topic.Commanded by Major Charles Whittlesey, a New York lawyer turned Army officer, the "Lost Battalion" was comprised of numerous elements of the US 77th Infantry Division. For six days during the October 1918 Meuse-Argonne offensive, the "Lost Battaltion" was cut off and surrounded by German forces in the Argonne Forest, stubbornly refusing surrender. At one point, a carrier pigeon nicknamed "Cher Ami" carried a message back to American lines which saved Whittlesey's men, who's exact position was unknown, from friendly artillery fire.Today "Cher Ami, " who died in 1919, is preserved and displayed at the Smithsonian's Museum of American History.

"Fly, Cher Ami, Fly" uses this real historical event for the basis of this touching and wonderfully illustrated children's story in which "Cher Ami" carries an important message through skies fraught with danger, ultimately saving the day.Young readers will doubtless be inspired to investigate further this chapter of American history. In this regard, "Fly, Cher Ami, Fly" is not only a fine story, but a great sower of seeds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tastefully Written and Beautifully Illustrated
The topic of war is a difficult one to explain to young children. It was refreshing to see how tastefully Fly, Cher Ami, Fly! dealt with this sensitive subject. This book is geared towards 4-8 year olds.I am familiar with the true events surrounding Cher Ami's final flight, and I was frankly happy and relieved that the artist showed enough good judgement and restaint, so that my five year old didn't have to see a painting of a bird with its bloody eye hanging out, leg shot off and hole through his chest the size of a quarter. Children these days are bombarded with way too many violent images, and it was a relief that the horrors of war weren't grahically depicted in this children's book. Finally, here is book that deals with the human side of war. The soldiers are young and scared. The images are symbolic. The military uniforms are historically accurate. It seems to me that both author and artist honored the story of Cher Ami on a level that is appropriate for their target audience of 4-8 year olds.

Product Description
During the 1970s, the real Cher wore Bob Mackie designs for her TV show as well as for galas and other public appearances. Presented here are the fashions that Mego Corporation recreated, perfect little miniatures captured in doll-size. This vast array of designs showcases Mackie's flair for the dramatic, his gift of the glitz, and his love for the show-biz statement. Fans will be amazed by how many doll-size versions of the real Cher's fashions they recognize and remember. The 1970s live again in baring tops and billowy bell bottoms, slinky metallic gowns, and of course, stretch polyester. It's pure fun turning the pages to see each fashion, with names like "Herky Jerky," "Jumperoo," and "Midnight Blue," in scenes that works the name of the outfit into the action. There are over fifty designs for the Cher doll by Mackie and many more for the other Mego fashion dolls like Farrah, Diana Ross, Toni Tennille, and of course, Sonny. With values in the captions, this is a must-have reference book for fans of Cher and all her celebrity friends! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CHER DOLL & HER CELEB FRIENDS
GREAT LITTLE BOOK, ALL THE PHOTOS AND STORY ARE FUN. MY FRIEND DOESNT EVEN KNOW THAT THIS BOOK EXISTS. WILL BE THRILLED. CAME IN PERFECT CONDITION.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Trip Down **M*E*G*O** Lane!
Sandra J. Bryan's book CHER DOLL & HER CELEBRITY FRIENDS could've only come from a dedicated Mego Cher collector.

Each page has glorious color photos of all the different types of Mego Cher dolls--including Sonny--and also features other Mego dolls like Diana Ross, Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith, The Captain & Tennille, Suzanne Somers, Laverne & Shirley and Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman. Any kid from the 70s will recognize these names and remember some of the dolls.

Bryan provides info on each doll from the year of release to how much the dolls sold for back then, which range from $7.95-$8.95, and how much they go for now in mint condition.

The author also provides photos on the many Bob Mackie fashions that were available for the Mego Cher doll and she describes each one as though you were watching a fashion show and provides the approximate prices of each.

What separates this book from other Mego collector books is that Bryan has lovingly dressed and posed the Cher doll in the fashions and has the star in many scenes (that reflect the outfit) and features other dolls not just Mego's.Each vignette also includes elaborate backgrounds and doll sets/props and reminds me of the skits that the real Cher used to do on the "Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour" (Sonny & Cher - The Ultimate Collection).

Anyway, you can tell that this was a labor of love from author Sandra "Johnsie" Bryan and I'm glad that she takes the reader on that fun journey. I recommend this book to any Cher or Mego fan or fashion doll collector.

5-0 out of 5 stars CHERTASTIC!
I love that this book exists!I've always had a CHER doll but I never owned any of her fashions, but I definitely remember looking at them at Toys 'R' Us when I was a kid.I even remember her wearing many of them on her own show back in the 1970's.The photos are fun and entertaining! This is a great addition to any Cher collection! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Looks are deceiving
I also couldn't find Miss napsha's name anywhere in this book and I work for a bookseller. We list it under Berman. We have also received some concerns from buyers that the subject matter may be inappropriate for children of this age-group. As for myself, I tend to think many of the reviews of this item are highly over-inflated. The book is just so-so and tends to over glamorize someone who is not perhaps the best role model for young girls to have. I believe they are better women out there who are a much more worthy subject for a series called Women of Achievement. I know I would not wish my daughter to grow up to be another Cher!
In fact, just out of curiosity, I found that Napsha seems to live uncannily close to where some of the most glowing reviews for this item seem to geographically located. Almost sounds as though the 5 star rating had a little help from her friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Power of Language
A friend of mine found this book by accident. It is a long story, but the fact of the matter is: there is a God!He read it and said this book will change my life and it did!Napsha is a genius, a writer so powerful, so inspired. There aren't enough superlatives to describe it.If Shakespeare were alive today, he'd write a "Sonett for Napsha".Musically, "Per Elise" would be "Per Napsha."Incredible.

5-0 out of 5 stars A stroke of genius
Ms. Napsha has written a surprisingly comprehensive account on Cher. This becomes even more remarkable in light of Cher's current umpteenth "comeback".I sincerely hope that Ms. Napsha will be offered the opportunity to write another book really soon. She has an incredible gift of writing. I consider her one of the premier up and coming voices of a new 21st century generation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Napsha does it again!!
I am again delighted with the inventive prowess of Cheryl Napsha. Not often does an author capture the benevolence of their subject matter, however Napsha presents Cher in a most informative and intriguing light. The amount of fascinating information is presented in a clear and revealing way with copious enthusiasm!!The novel is a masterpiece that I am proud to possess and reluctant to lend to my friends, but I do because one cannot be left without the astuteness of Napsha's magnum opus.Way to go Cheryl!! ...
