Product Description
I See That You Are Down, But When Are You Going To Get Up? chronicles the trials and tribulations I encountered during transition for boyhood to man-hood through the transformative powers of Christ and the Holy Spirit within us all. We are far more than our parental DNA, and far greater than the product of our environment. We have far more in common within the human experience than we are willing to accept. The three primary causes of conflict chronicles throughout history have been based upon racial division, religious intolerance, and those who seek to control the resources of this planet God created for us all to share.

Unless we all strive to live a balanced life whereby our mind, body and spirit work in unison to bring forth inner peace, inner turmoil will bring for external conflict into our environment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Blessing
I learned of Mr. McDowell through an internet radio medium in 2008.To say the man is wise, would be a vast understatement. This book chronicles the life of Shawn McDowell, but its stories and most definitely its messages are true of/for many. The book is more vivid than most movies, taking you through ups and downs, but it never strays from the messages. You'll laugh, you'll be shocked, but most importantly you will THINK. This is one of the few books I've read that I can honestly say changed my life.If you want to be blessed with an awesome reading experience, this is a must buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening

5-0 out of 5 stars Shawn is an incredibly talented individual.
Shawn shares his experience's with the reader in a way that makes you feel as if he is talking with you face to face.
His writing this book has shown me the values in my life that I had overlooked and needed to pay more attention to. His Christian background takes you through all the same things we faced when we where growing up and as an adult trying to place our busy lives in order without success, because we were leaving out the most important person, "Christ", so in my opinion, he definitely keeps it real!!
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn what they are overlooking in their lives and need to know it's not too late to get those values back!
Shawn, I am looking forward to your next book because I know it too will be as if you are talking to me, not like I am reading it. You are amazing Shawn!! ... Read more

Shawn Kelley's groundbreaking study shows how the major intellectual movements of the modern world, such as Orientalism and romantic nationalism, become infused with the category of race. He then traces the processes through which racially-grounded thinking has influenced modern biblical scholarship.
Dynamic and thought-provoking, the book incorporates a wide range of current debate, from critical race theory to the relationship between Martin Heidegger and National Socialism. It will give every student and scholar of biblical studies awareness of the subtle ways in which racial thinking has permeated their discipline, and encourage them to create new modes of biblical analysis. ... This book is a nice little science fiction story.
I first read it as a young boy and still re-read it on occasion.

Editorial Review

Product Description
Relying on religious traditions that are as old as their faith itself, many devout Christians turn to prayer rather than medicine when their children fall victim to illness or injury.Faith healers claim that their practices are effective in restoring health - more effective, they say, than modern medicine. But, over the past century, hundreds of children have died after being denied the basic medical treatments furnished by physicians because of their parents' intense religious beliefs. The tragic deaths of these youngsters have received intense scrutiny from both the news media and public authorities seeking to protect the health and welfare of children.

When Prayer Fails: Faith Healing, Children, and the Law is the first book to fully examine the complex web of legal and ethical questions that arise when criminal prosecutions are mounted against parents whose children die as a result of the phenomenon known by experts as religion-based medical neglect.Do constitutional protections for religious liberty shield parents who fail to provide adequate medical treatment for their sick children? Are parents likewise shielded by state child-neglect faith laws that seem to include exemptions for healing practices? What purpose do prosecutions really serve when it's clear that many deeply religious parents harbor no fear of temporal punishment? Peters offers a review of important legal cases in both England and America from the 19th century to the present day. He devotes special attention to cases involving Christian Science, the source of many religion-based medical neglect deaths, but also considers cases arising from the refusal of Jehovah's witnesses to allow blood transfusions or inoculations. Individual cases dating back to the mid-19th century illuminate not only the legal issues at stake but also the profound human drama of religion-based medical neglect of children.

Based on a wide array of primary and secondary source materials - among them judicial opinions, trial transcripts, police and medical examiner reports, news accounts, personal interviews, and scholarly studies - this book explores efforts by the legal system to balance judicial protections for the religious liberty of faith-healers against the state's obligation to safeguard the rights of children. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent treatment of a fascinating, but largely unknown problem
This book discusses the practice of religious healing in various forms, focusing mainly on those practices that deprive children of medical treatment. It covers not only Christian Science, but also several lesser known churches, nearly all of which exist in some form today. It contains a wealth of historical information on faith healing, including its theological foundation in Christianity, the legal conflict between faith healing and child abuse, and efforts to remove religious exemptions from child neglect laws. For me, the most interesting part discusses modern attempts to prove the efficacy of prayer in medicine.

The potential buyer is warned that the subject matter can be quite disturbing. The author presents a long series of grisly examples in which children suffered horrible deaths for lack of basic medical treatment. They span approximately the last 150 years and include some very recent cases.

The book is very well written, though at times it gets a little repetitive. For example, after the first few mentions, the reader no longer needs to be reminded about the healing techniques mentioned in the epistle of James or that CHILD is an advocacy group. It is a very quick, but also gut-wrenching, read that presents numerous intellectual challenges.

5-0 out of 5 stars When Prayer Fails
When Prayer Fails: Faith Healing, Children, and the Law, by Shawn Francis Peters, looks at the legal limits of religious freedom in the United States when applied to faith healing in relation to children. While the right to refuse medical treatment due to devout religious beliefs is acceptable in adults, what happens when the children of those who practice these beliefs are also denied medical treatment? The answer is hundreds of unnecessary casualties. Peters' book looks at the origin and history of faith healing, its many young victims and how the law and juries have struggled for centuries trying to advocate a child's right to medical care.
The right to religious freedom has long been a cherished value in the United States, but the first amendment has been used since its creation as justification for the intentional withholding of medical treatment from children. Peters shows the many religious sects and their followers that have come on trial, both in court and public opinion, for the hundreds of deaths of children who were treated with prayer, anointment, and the laying of hands alone. Peters takes the reader through the history of faith healing and the resulting court cases of neglect and manslaughter that accompany it.
Starting with the Peculiar People, a religious group based in Britain in the mid 1800s, the reader is shown dozens of different gruesome child deaths and court cases. Most memorable is the Wagstaffe case of 1868, in which a couple was charged with manslaughter after their 14 month old daughter died of a lung infection after being treated with only prayer and anointment. While the common-law of the time did not encompass medical negligence for the charge of manslaughter and the couple was acquitted, the result was the first law pertaining specifically to the rights of children in the form of provided food, shelter, clothing, and medical aid from their parents. It would take another decade for this law to be upheld in court cases against the Peculiar People, and many of the members continued to come on trial for the deaths of their children despite the known legal consequences. This law would be later used in US courts as precedent in similar cases.
Next Peters takes a look at the migration of faith healing to the United States and the reform in laws protecting children that took place during the mid to late 1800s, such as the beginning of government intervention in cases of neglect and abuse. John Alexander Dowie is one of the main figures responsible for the dramatic rise in faith healing in the United States. Migrating to Chicago from Sydney, Australia, Dowie and his ministry vehemently refuted medicine and practiced healing strictly from a narrow interpretation of the Epistle of James. Dowie and his followers were in and out of the US courts throughout the 1890s and early 1900s, with courts struggling to hold any type of conviction. Public opinion, however, condemned Dowie as a fraud and he was eventually forced to leave Chicago. It was one of his followers' cases, Peirson v. United States, which was one of the first charges of manslaughter due to medical neglect to hold up in court.
The book also looks at other and more current faith healing religions, such as Mary Baker Eddy's Christian Science, Pentecostals, and Jehovah's Witnesses who specifically eschew blood transfusions and inoculations. In one of the most famous cases, Prince v. Massachusetts, the law established limitations between religious liberty and the duties and rights of parents in regard to their children. Many other revolutionary cases are shown along the way. A common thread in the trials seen throughout the book is the defense of those charged. In almost every trial, the defendants either claim ignorance of laws pertaining to medical negligence of children, religious persecution, or the right of a parent to govern their child as they see fit. Another common trend is the sincerity of the many defendants' beliefs, which has resulted in lenient sentences and sympathetic juries. This has led to unenforced laws and more violators. Furthermore, the tendency for the defendants to appeal guilty verdicts has caused many cases to be dropped or reversed.
The book both begins and ends with cases that occurred less than 30 years ago and while legislatures have come a long way, one thing remains: the needless suffering and dying of children due to their parents' credulity to faith healing and denial of modern medicine. Today there are still many young victims who are dying for a belief system that they are too young to understand. As of 2008, when the book was written, there were still several states that had yet to reform or pass laws preventing these needless faith healing casualties in children.
This book is incredibly informative, but it is certainly not for the weak of heart. The entire book recounts hundreds of deaths of children, which are both gruesome and incredibly painful. The frustration of the author with the parents of these child victims is tangible and is easily understood and transferred to the reader. It is hard to believe that parents would deny their children medicine and consequently watch them die of diseases that could most likely be cured with modern or even early medicine. Furthermore, there are numerous examples and court cases that show parents who have lost multiple children to diseases treated with faith healing, and yet they cling to their narrow interpretation of faith. These parents not only have caused the deaths of their children, but have exposed entire communities to highly contagious diseases by not following quarantine regulations or notifying the proper authorities. Their apparent ignorance or refusal to comprehend and follow necessary laws that protect not only their children but the surrounding community is exasperating and distressing. The book is incredibly well-written and thoroughly researched on a topic that has not received enough attention in recent years.

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique book that shows you how to have happiness beyond your wildest expectations
This book is a valuable, fascinating biography and self-help book rolled into one. I have read many self-help books but have never seen one that does such a good job of describing the spiritual *and* physical responsibilities we all must undertake for a rewarding, satisfying life. For example, in addition to describing the moral and psychological forces at work in our lives, the author includes information on "How to Look and Feel Better," including healthy eating, nutrition, exercise and weight training.

Author Shawn Smith, a self-proclaimed "Knight for Christ," is a Navy veteran and graduated with high honors in Criminal Social Justice from Lewis University. In the book he shares the lessons he learned during his own 36-year search for peace and fulfillment. As you read the book, he shows how to find the tools and the will to fight anxiety, depression, anger, dependency, and low self esteem, and how to apply this to your own life.

Throughout, this book is clear, easy to understand, and motivating to the reader. I recommend it highly.

From the Foreword:Shawn's rich and profound passion for God has garnered him much praise, and believe it or not, criticism... many of Shawn's critics come from within the gay community itself. Why? Because Shawn is either 'not gay enough' or because he is 'too Christian.'(Brian K. Ladd)

From the Afterword:This is not a book on why you should think the way I do...I only ask to be welcome at the table of ideas and expression.I have written this book for two reasons:
1. To shatter the mold that limits religious and political expression within the GLBT community.

2. To assure others who don't fit that mold that, 'You are not alone.'(Shawn Thomas)

Unashamed is compelling.Shawn Thomas tackles controversial political and spiritual issues such as same-sex marriage and Prop 8, gender inclusive language, LGBT party platforms, among others. He breaks the typical liberal mold for gay America and playfully opens the door for conversation. He passionately seeks authenticity, and despite our political standings, we gladly go for the ride.(Linda Beckstead of Brenner-Beckstead Ministries) ... Oftentimes in life, situations and circumstances are not happenstance and are divinely destine to be revealed in our lives to glorify God and to edify his kingdom. This can ultimately be in relationships, families, work place, school or even the community. Are we as Christians responsible for the encounters that we experience with each other? Are we our brothers' keeper?Page (Introduction)Yes we are, we are responsible for every idle word spoken and deliver or written to each man-kind.Some connections are divine to bring about the birthing of a new life that we save others-we all experience labor in some forms of life. Rather it is a goal, dream, plan or purpose that God has given us to deliver and to bring forth to the world. Page 48.Some connections are seasonal, for a reason and yet others for a life time of change, pleasure or perhaps pain. God does has a plan even if the plan is dark and beyond comprehension. I found that his book aided me in understanding that God is working out his plan in my life despite the connections that I have encounter rather purposeful, intentional or by occasion. Page 87 Learning to celebrate where you are will help you to not ask the familiar question WHY? but to learn the old two letter word that may be difficult to deliver NO.

It is not why this is happening to me, but it is NO- I am not going to take the devil's tactics as my own and leave a life of defeat and stress.

Page 221 No doesn't mean that you want go through the storm and have to put on the armor but it does mean that trials and tribulations will come but peace will abide and rain. No situation is without question a surprise to God.

I learned most that God has a plan for us that will be reveal and manifested through divine connections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scripturally-Sound Guide To Spiritual Prosperity
Say you're driving down the street one day...just how likely are you to believe that the man you see walking on the sidewalk will ultimately be responsible for saving your soul? Or what if you're standing in line at the grocery store...would you believe it if someone told you that the woman waiting in line behind you would convert your unborn daughter to Christianity one day?

As difficult to believe as these scenarios may be, the fact is that they are undeniably realistic. Though this is indeed a big world in which we live, we are all interconnected in it in more ways than you can imagine. The things that you do every day have just as much of an impact on an orphan in China as they do your next door neighbor - and the fact that you don't personally witness that impact doesn't make it any less true.

Such concepts as these are explored extensively in Divine Connections, the debut offering by author and minister Shawn Easton. In thorough, scripturally-backed detail, Easton provides the reader with a resourceful guide to understanding just how pervasive our common humanity is, shedding revelatory light on the finer points of spiritual cause-and-effect. Through practical examples, the detailed breakdown of biblical parables, and full-fledged scriptural analysis, Easton presents readers with a how-to manual for fostering divine growth and maturity, as well as learning how to discover and follow one's own unique path of spiritual destiny.

What's most refreshing about Divine Connections is the way in which its various claims are based in sound scriptural support. In so doing, it establishes itself as a bona fide authority on religious and spiritual matters, distinguishing itself from the myriad derivative self-help works currently flooding the market.

For anyone who has long sought out answers to the lingering questions of personal identity, biblical truth, or finding purpose in their lives, Divine Connections is an indispensable volume of required reading. Whether you believe in God or not, Easton's informative treatise will undoubtedly enlighten you to a higher overall perspective regarding the human condition and so much more. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars New Perspectives on Purpose
"Divine Connections" holds the key to unlocking your purpose in God's kingdom. This is a book for anyone wanting to move to the next level in knowing and experiencing God.Shawn Easton offers the reader a new understanding of the responsibility and benefit of being a member of the "Body of Christ." Easton sees the church as being made up of interlocking divine connections of individuals joined together to encourage each other in fulfilling their divine purpose.

Easton talks about the importance of the divine connection between Elizabeth and Mary, Ananias and Paul, as well as Paul and Barnabas. He relates the impact of the stoning of Stephan on Paul and the significance of this divine encounter.

Examples are also drawn from the Old Testament. The encounter of David and Jonathan illustrate how we are prepared for our divine connections. Easton uses David's encounter with Goliath to alert the reader to kill any giants that keep them from fulfilling their connections and God's purpose while using the weapons God gives them to defeat their enemies.

Other divine connections in the study include: Godly marriages, friendships, and families. Easton emphasizes the importance of imparting generational blessings and also passing the blessing down within the Body of Christ and its ministries. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Way To Start My Day!
I was needing a devotion that I could do in the morning before my "official" work and school day started. This book has been perfect for such a time. It has helped me to stay focused during my time with the Lord, and keeps me from getting side-tracked. It has given me good things to think about during my day and it is a great way to start my day with a "full cup." I really enjoy the Saturday devotions, too, as they have specific questions to ponder.(And they are great journaling topics!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful personal devotions
It took me a long time as a Christian to come to terms with the idea that the days between Sundays were the tough ones, and that I needed more than an hour on Sunday at church to be an effective Christian and have a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. If I'd had this book sooner, I'd have had a better handle on the concept.

Mr. Craig's devotions (he's the "Craig" in the CCM group Phillips, Craig and Dean) are written with a friendly, 'close-up' style that makes them very accessible to the average reader; I think this would be a good book for a teen group to use.

It's definitely a worthwhile way to grow closer in your daily walk with the Lord. ... Read more

Product Description
The year is AD 249 and the Roman Empire stands on the brink of destruction.Barbarian hordes swarm the frontiers, desperate to feed on the vast wealth of an empire paralyzed by rampant corruption, immorality, and a string of incompetent emperors.Out of this chaos emerges a new emperor, the "Divine Decius," who plans to save the empire by annihilating the people he believes are responsible for angering the gods-the Christians.

Now the fate of the empire rests on the slim shoulders of a simple slave girl, Damarra Valensia, the obsession of two of the empire's most powerful men: Valerianus, Decius' depraved lieutenant and the architect of the Decian persecution of the Christians, whose lust for Damarra will not be denied; and Julius Valens, the handsome and respected senator, who wants only to win the beautiful Damarra's heart. As the battle between the two men escalates, Damarra becomes the pawn in a game that threatens to tear her life apart and bring the once mighty Roman Empire to its knees. Will she deny the Christ and live out her life with the man she loves?Or will she stand with her fellow believers and proudly proclaim the very words that demand a death sentence in her world:Christianus Sum . . . I am a Christian?

5-0 out of 5 stars You Will Not Be Disappointed
I always love a book that makes me sigh with pleasure, pat the cover and sit still for a few minutes after the ending to let it continue to wash over me. Christianus Sum by Canadian author Shawn J. Pollett, does just that. A sweeping epic filled with suspense, intrigue and romance.

Set in third century Rome, a new emperor has ascended the throne and the peace that Christians have known is suddenly snatched away. All Christians are required to deny Christ and sacrifice to the gods. Senator Julius Valens is caught between his desire to serve Rome and his love for Damarra, his slave and a Christian. While he wins her heart, he must decide whom he will serve - Rome or God.

This beautiful novel left me spellbound. The romance between Damarra and Julius ran parallel to the love Damarra had for her Lord. Who would come first? Who would she serve? Would Julius deny his many gods and serve the Lord to please Damarra, or because he finds the Lord to be the only way and begins to love Him too? The author has taken real people and meshed them with fictional characters, blending the history and drama of this time period to produce a novel that will entertain and enlighten the reader.

This novel comes at a time when persecutions to Christians is increasing around the world. You will be moved by the devotion of the early Christians to the point that when this novel is over, you will sit back after reading the last page and ponder your devotion to the Lord. How devoted are you? How will you stand O Christian when the day of persecution is upon you?

I highly recommend this book, which by the way, won three awards in the Canadian Christian Writing Awards for 2009. You will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Has it All
Author Shawn Pollett is an incredible writer. I knew that after I read the first book in the Cry of the Martyrs Trilogy -Christianus Sum.And after reading What Rough Beast, the second book in the series, I'm wondering why he keeps going the self-published route, because this guy is gold.

Damarra and Valens are back and living in peace after the death of Emperor Decius. But the reprieve from persecution for the Christians in the Roman Empire is coming to an end.A new emperor with a hatred for Christians has come to power and he is promising to return Rome to it's glory days. Unfortunately, he has to deal with barbarian invasions in the north and Persian invasions from the east. But this emperor believes he is a god and that makes him more dangerous then Decius.

Damarra and Valens must once again fight for survival. But along the way, God provides a mysterious German warrior named Gundabar, who says he has a message from God that will help save their lives. What this message is and how it all transpires is another epic tale of faith, trust and hope in God when everything seems impossible. The faith of everyone will be tested yet again and the question remains - will they be able to stand firm once more?

If you have not read Christianus Sum, then I urge you to read it before you read What Rough Beast. It is a continuation of the story and it is made all the more powerful by reading the first book. The level of adventure is just as high in this book. The romance of Damarra and Valens is continued of course and new ones are added. There is intrigue and espionage as well. This book, like its predecessor, has it all. ... Read more
