5-0 out of 5 stars Phil Collins' Anthology by Hal.Leonard
It really is a good book with possibilities for multiple intruments such as guitar, keyboards and piano. A big plus is that all the lyrics are noted at the bars, but I find it difficult to change the pages while playing. It is a paperback and so it isn't so easy to handle.

But the quality of the music itself is very very good. Even a starter could play from this. And it's worth it, especially when you are as much of a fan of Phil as I am.

4-0 out of 5 stars Can't beat this deal on Phil's greatest collection
Great selection of Phil Collins songs, each sounding really good on piano. My copy had one slight error, having the improper key signature on "One more night", b-flat instead of e-flat. I love playing "Easy Lover", "Two Hearts", and "Don't Lose my Number"; these uptempo songs sound especially lively -- and if you can sing with the passion of P.C. it will really get the party going. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very pleased
It's very difficult to find any books on Phil Collins, so when I found this I ordered it immediately.Great service. The book arrived in a timely manner and was in excellent condition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Phil, The Artful Dodger
Though the late biographer Ray Coleman is very passionate about music and what drives a person, I'd say there was a bigger emphasis on Phil's romantic life than anything else. I can understand why, because Phil's solo stuff is all about relationships, but I still think it is a smidge of a shame. I would have liked to know more about Phil's thoughts on the drum sound he helped cultivate on Peter Gabriel's song "Intruder", for instance, and what Phil thinks about drum machines, and more about what he thinks about his fellow musicians, among other things. I understand why it doesn't, a snippet from his son Simon Collins, suggests he likes to keep these sorts of things to himself (at least, he did at the time). But still...

That's not to say this isn't a worthwhile book. It was revealing, at least for me, to discover more precisely what influenced his relationship songs, and to read about the reactions of both the press and his first wife to these songs. Also, before this book, I hadn't really read much about his early days at performance school and his days in his first band "Flaming Youth". Here there is a fair amount of information on both, plus first hand accounts from people who knew Phil then, including his Mum.

All sorts of people are interviewed throughout the book, (by Ray Coleman himself) including most of the major love interests in Phil's life, bandmates like Peter Gabriel (from Genesis) and Bill Bruford (from Brand X), Pattie Clapton (wive of Phil's "best friend" Eric Clapton), and his children from his first marriage. I really appreciate the first hand accounts, makes the book more lively. It's a great effort, especially from a biographer who was battling cancer at the time. In giving the book 4 stars, maybe I'm just being a tad too picky.

According to Ray Coleman's account, Phil appears to be a very hard working man, who, though he has many friends in show business, keeps people at a professional distance. He can be a bit of a control freak in the studio, and at times has something of a temper, though in Genesis it appeared he avoided those kind of confrontations. I think I might know a bit too much about Phil Collins' personal life now, actually.

3-0 out of 5 stars Left me wanting to know more
I have been a fan of Phil's since 1980 and have gone to many concerts. His talent is beyond belief, leaving me in awe after every show. I nearly fainted when he almost touched my hand at a Great Woods concert. From thisbook, I wanted to learn more about Phil Collins the incredibly talented anddriven individual. The book spent too much time on the struggle and strifein his life and not enough on the triumphs of a man who saw his star in thesky and never stopped, even after surpassing it. I seek to find out moreabout my musical hero because this book did not satisfy me.Phil, can wehear "Both Sides" of the story?

5-0 out of 5 stars But Seriously Folks......
This was such a great book and I know that any Phil Collins fan would enjoy reading it as much as I did.It shows Phil as a real person, even though we all look up to him in awe because of his great artistic talents. I know that after reading this book, I still feel the same way I did aboutPhil. That is, if someone asked me, Dalia, if you could meet anyone, Imean anyone and just spend the evening chatting, who would it be?Myanswer would still be Phil Collins,of course! I write poetry and wouldlove to make them into songs and would love Phils' advice and maybe hecould give me some pointers. The one thing that suprised me though, waswhat his mom said about his current wife, Orianne."I hope shedoesn't change, and if she does, I hope I'm not around to pick up thepieces." Phil is a big boy and his choices in his life, werehischoices, some good, some bad and maybe he just grew apart from his firstwife and his second wife lived too much for him and never developed anyinterest outside their marriage. But Orianne and Phil, I wish you the bestand hope for you two, a long life together. ... Product Description
British artist Phil Collins (b. 1970) uses films, photographs and installations to explore the mediating power of culture and possibilities of personal expression in areas that are facing political conflict and change around the world, such as Pakistan, Serbia, Iraq, and Northern Ireland. This cutting-edge publication offers fresh perspectives on the expanding possibilities of art in the global age and focuses on Collins' most recent work, "The World Won't Listen", an international three-part video installation project begun in 2004. In Bogata, Istanbul, and Jakarta, the artist filmed fans performing karaoke versions of their favourite tracks from "The World Won't Listen", an enduring 1987 album by British indie-pop icons The Smiths. With multi-disciplinary essays and a revealing interview with the artist on his creative process, this book provides a highly compelling and critical study of the intersection of art history, popular culture, and music in Collins' innovative project and demonstrates why he was recently voted one of the ten most important artists working today. ... Product Description

In Play Poker Like the Pros, poker master Phil Hellmuth, Jr., demonstrates exactly how to play and win -- even if you have never picked up a deck of cards -- the modern games of poker, including: Texas Hold'em, Omaha, Seven-Card Stud, and Razz.

Phil Hellmuth, Jr., a seven-time World Champion of Poker, presents his tournament-tested strategies to beat any type of player, including:

  • The Jackal (crazy and unpredictable)
  • The Elephant (plays too many hands)
  • The Mouse (plays very conservatively)
  • The Lion (skilled and tough to beat)

Play Poker Like the Pros begins by laying out the rules and set-up of each game and then moves on to easy-to-follow basic and advanced strategies. Hellmuth teaches exactly which hands to play, when to bluff, when to raise, and when to fold. In addition Hellmuth provides techniques for reading other players and staying cool under pressure. There are also special chapters on how to beat online poker games and an inside look at tournament play.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read beginner poker book
I liked it better than "Play Poker Like the Pros". Phil's ego doesn't get in the way in this book, about 100 pages less ego. It's definitely one to read if you are just starting out playing or wanting to learn poker. I don't think you can even get it in the book stores anymore.

2-0 out of 5 stars I don't see how this book can be over 2 stars.
This was the first poker book I've bought and read while waiting for my Caro's and Brunson's books to arrive. At $8.50, it was the cheapest book that I could find in the store and in hindsight, it was worth $8.50 or less.

The book is absolutely for entertainment value because it teaches nothing of value that any other competent books haven't taught.Books such as "Idiot's guide to no limit Texas holdem" covers far more materials than Phil's book. From all of the read reviews that have been written about this book, I take it that this is the exact copy of a previous book that he has published before with the exception of 1 chapter on tournament which was not worth $8.50.Whoever wrote the reviews on most of these poker books must have been paid to write such positives things about it.

Honestly, this is a bad book. This book started off with a lesson on how the game is played... the button, big blind, small blind etc. Then (I don't remember the order) but he goes into describing players' type in term of animal forms and he's very proud of this fact too. There're the lion (aggressive), elephant (calling station), jackal (loose), mouse (tight), and eagle. The eagle suppose to be the professionals whom "swoop" down and beat up all the other type.Beside this point, there is nothing original about this book.

This tournament advice is to play tight in the beginning then "read baby read" once you're up the levels.Well, thanks Phil, for telling me to read, if I know how I wouldn't have to read books now right?

This book tells use to start off learning the game by playing only A-K, A-Q and pockets, and at most Ace through Jack combo and pocket pairs.I mean really? How many of those we actually run into and how many time do we win when we get those.Adding the cost of the blinds, ante, loosing hands, miss and flop, and players catching on... you just won't win.

It also goes into a few concept just as flop-or-drop, and playing suited connectors (as he reveal Huck Seed's style).

Overall, for any one who knows a bit about hold em, this book does not worth buying, read a few page in the store if you can and you'll see that this book is pretty much useless as far as poker goes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for a beginner at Texas Hold 'em
First of all, let me say at the beginning that I have not yet finished this book.I've only gotten through the first few chapters. But, in those first few chapters, I've learned skills and strategies to Texas Hold 'em that I didn't even know existed.

Phil Hellmuth is very candid in his comments. The book is written like he's sitting, talking to you one on one.It makes the book flow much more easily.I honestly believe that if you had a regular Hold 'em game with some friends each week, after reading this book (assuming no one else had), you'd probably walk out of the room with every cent that was brought to the table.

No, it's not an advanced Hold 'em book. But, I don't think it's supposed to be.It was my very first Hold 'em book, and I just couldn't believe how well it improved my game.My first test was in the video game World Series of Poker 2008 where I was losing every single game until this book. After reading the first few chapters and adding some patience to my game, my character walked away the winner for the very first time.

Well worth the money if you're into Hold 'em for fun.If you're already very experienced and want to go pro some day, maybe not the best book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phil Hellmuth'sTexas Hold'em
I found this book to be very informative.Following the instructions and tips given in the book has actually improved my game and increased my winnings almost immediately.Well worth the inexpensive cost of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars it good

Product Description
One of the most successful rock acts of all time, Genesis enjoyed a longevity exceeded only by the likes of the Rolling Stones and the Kinks, and provided a launching pad for superstars Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins. Turn It On Again is the first book to document the complete history of this popular and influential band, bringing their story up-to-date while placing them in the context of their time. It explores the relationship between the band members and the remarkable solo careers they have subsequently enjoyed. Drawing on dozens of exclusive interviews with band members past and present, as well as the musicians' friends and associates, author Dave Thompson chronicles Genesis's evolution from progressive-rock visionaries to mainstream rock stars, and the continuing careers of their most famous alumni. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Genesis Biography
Given the lack of press they get these days, it's easy to forget how ubiquitous this band was in the mid-80's.So it is a pleasant surprise to find any book on Genesis, especially one taking up nearly 250 pages.Sure enough, this book contains an almost startling amount of detail on the formative and early years of the band. While I consider Genesis one of my favorite groups, and I think I know quite a bit about them, there was quite a bit of new info to me in this book.

You get the feeling though, that the author is solidly in the camp that Geneis didn't do much of note after Hackett left the band. The entire 80's output feels glossed over, focusing mainly on Colins' solo career and noting that his sucess had an impact on how things were done within Genesis. There just is not that much behind-the-scenes info here covering the period when the band was at the height of their popularity. To be fair, Genesis has never been a band with a seedy back story, so there just might not be that much to say.But given how much space the author devoted to peripheral players, such as the band String Driven Thing -- whose only connection to Genesis was as labelmates and sometime openers -- I was a bit let down by this lack of coverage of the band the book was supposed to be about.Likewise, as has been noted in other reviews, some key events are a bit rushed here.As an example, while the split with Gabriel is of course documented, there is almost no coverage of events leading up to the breakup.

Nonetheless, I unreservedly rate this book a solid 4 stars, and highly recommend it to any Genesis fan. It's a sure bet that you'll learn something new here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gabriel rules (but even Collins sounds okay)
I didn't expect to get past the Peter Gabriel years when I started reading this... who cares about Genesis after that, after all?But Thompson's writing style is so engaging, his humor is so strong and his passion so contagious that the band had broken up before I put the book down, and I was actually calling up my sister to borrow her copy of Abacab.Recmmended to everyone who actually cares about the music (and doesn't just want the dirt on their private lives...)

2-0 out of 5 stars Reads Like a Discography
I've been fascinated with Peter Gabriel since I was 12 years old.I bought this book hoping to get some insight into the man and some info on those early Genesis albums. The book got off to a great start; discussing the early days of Genesis as school chums. But as the book progresses it begins to read like a discography.So-and-so made a solo album with these musicians, Genesis made this album, here's how it did in the market. The writing is marked by british style humor and language. But this does nothing to make this book any more interesting. It lacks insight into the bands characters and barely discusses what's going on in their lives. For example, at one point the book mentions Peter Gabriels wife Jill.Uh, no one told me he got married! who's this jill person?what does she do?Later the same thing happened with phil collins. When did he get a wife?early on there are some good stories but later all we hear about is that they put out a new album, who was on it and how the album did.a little about the sound too.oh well, they'll stay mythic in my mind. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Music
I recently purchased the advanced version of this book, and the music for it is wonderful. This is by far the best music for any Disney movie that has been made - the lyrics are spectacular and it's great to be able to play the music on the piano.

The easy piano version is for beginners, so if you have years of piano experience behind you then the advanced version would be best. The music sounds more like the songs in the advanced version, which is a downside for the easy version.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disney's Tarzan Music Is Wonderful
I never thought that I would like the music to the hit movie Tarzan, frankly, I am usually annoyed at cartoon scores. However, I have had an experience that miraculously changed my attitude. I work with a fabulousyoung man named Jeff, and while at work he would always pull that book outand sing the songs of the jungle to me.Now, I can't put this book down!! It means so much to me because Phil Collins really knows how to put humanemotion into music.I would reccommend this music to anyone who can singor play the piano.Let it touch your heart, as it has touched mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Music To Tarzan Provides A Jungle Of Joy
This simple arrangement to the music of the hit movie "Tarzan", makes performing each tune wonderfully basic and positively amusing.Gather the kids around, and hear them sing along to their favorite songscomposed by Phil Collins, the rock n' roll legend. From personalexperience, I have seen how much fun you can have just kicking back andbelting out a couple of fun tunes.Don't miss out on this chance forfamily fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm a little too old for the easy piano version

5-0 out of 5 stars I'd give more stars if I could
Reviewed by Irene Watson for Reader Views (5/09)

Music lovers and historians will love "Music of the Alamo" by William R. Chemerka and Allen J. Wiener! The story of the Alamo itself is a fascinating account when Sam Houston's army defeated Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto, but the music and songs that portray the event are touching and poignant.

The table of contents covers The Early 19th Century, The Mexican War, The Second Half of the 19th Century, The Early 20th Century, "The Ballad of Davy Crockett," The Movie & TV Soundtrack Era, Alamo Song Titles and Discography, and, Lost Alamo Song Titles and Recordings. The book also includes a Bibliography and a CD with big-screen soundtracks.

Having visited the Alamo in San Antonio on many occasions, and captivated by the story itself, I found this book extremely informative while seeing the progression of music and film about the intriguing event.Even though it's been near 200 years since The Battle occurred, the history continues to live on and remind us of its importance and music is certainly one way we can remember.

I highly recommend "Music of the Alamo" to anyone that is a musical history buff.I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Chemerka's and Wiener's interest and research into the topic is exuberant and it shows in this book.Chermerka's own rendition of "We Remember the Alamo" on the CD captures the whole essence, and this book will certainly assist you in remembering.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hearing the Alamo
Wonderful survey of all the music that's been written about the Alamo, its most important figures, and motivations of the composers.Covers all eras, from the songs written about Davy Crockett during his own lifetime, to the most recent movie soundtrack recordings, here.Heavily illustrated with period sheet music, album covers, record labels, many in color.Icing on the cake is a free CD with representative music from various eras.A steal at $21.86.

5-0 out of 5 stars Music of the Alamo
I had no idea that this much music had been written about the Alamo and its participants. This book was obviously a labor of love for both William Chemerka and Allen Wiener. You know both of these men had coonskin caps when they were young. Ed McMann might say "everything you ever wanted to know" about music dealing with the Alamo. The amount of research that had to go into this book is mind boggling. You think you know about "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" because you sang it a thousand times when you were young, think again. I had no idea that there were three recordings of the song on the top twenty charts AT THE SAME TIME! The authors not only note every tune that has ever been written on the subject, but they include notes about each song that give the impression that they researched each song individually! The book is full of wonderful color illustrations and a C.D. of Alamo music is included as well.Add to this a forward by Fess Parker himself, and an introduction by Phil Collins, well I guess you can tell that I like the book. If you are even reading this, then you will like it too. Get this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Expansive Study
William Chemerka and Allen Wiener's "Music of the Alamo" is an expansive illustrated study of Alamo related songs from the 19th through the 21st centuries.
A narrative history forms the first two-thirds of the book, with a meticulously researched discography rounding things out nicely.
Full color illustrations throughout make for a beautiful presentation. This is a book that should hold great appeal for Alamo enthusiasts and music afficianados alike. Highly recommended! ... Read more

Product Description
I Only Want You To Love Me is the result of a six-month commission undertaken by Phil Collins in Brighton, England, as part of the first Brighton Photo Biennial. This first book by the artist brings together a diverse range of images, unfolding as an intimate, diaristic account of Collins' life and work, allowing the viewer to engage in the artist's ongoing ideas and production processes. Collins' sees a fundamental importance in photography’s ability to bring people together: his artistic practice is in some ways incidental, a mechanism that allows him to establish relationships with others on the most basic level. His portraiture rests on delicate and intimate exchanges that arise in face of the ambiguous presence of the camera, and his photographs are at once beautiful, personal and contentious. Collins carefully records his relationships with ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances--refugees, asylum seekers, support workers, close friends, and brief acquaintances--making poignant and personal connections between far-flung places, from Brighton, New York City, and Belfast to Kosovo, Palestine, and Serbia.Edited by Sinisa Mitrovic.

This book is the first time in over 20 years that Tony Banks, Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel and Mike Rutherford have collaborated creatively on a project, working together to create the complete history of Genesis. It is a story that spans 30 years and 30 albums selling a staggering 212 million copies worldwide. It embraces world tours that have played to 25 million people and it covers the high-profile departure over the years of one vocalist, (Peter Gabriel), one highly influential guitarist (Steve Hackett) and their best-known drummer and vocalist (Phil Collins). Key fellow members of the band, management, road crew and entourage have also been interviewed, including Jonathan King (their first manager, who got Genesis signed to Decca in 1967), long-time cohort and road manager Richard MacPhail, Anthony Phillips (guitarist, founder member to 1970), Tony Smith (manager since 1973), drummers Bill Bruford, Chris Stewart and John Silver, and Ray Wilson, the Genesis vocalist after Phil Collins. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
Having admittedly bought this book at a Phar-Mor "bargain books" section in 1989-ish for one or two dollars (those were the days!!), this book immediately entered into the (literally)"bang for the buck" category!Kamin's extraordinary photos, though somewhat biased toward the "trio years" and 1980-84 in general, well capture the theatrics and imagination of Genesis' and Peter Gabriel's stage shows, and its commentary by Goddard, though somewhat equally biased toward this period, is equally evocative. The good but overly short interviews of Collins, Rutherford, Banks and Gabriel (PG in "Plays Live" mode; Collins only a year away from the success of "No Jacket Required") are also of interest, clarifying the misunderstandings (no pun intended!) on the group's shift from progressive rock pioneers to superstar intelligent-pop trio of the 1980's, and the making of the trio's self-titled 1983 release.
