Product Description
In 1921 at the age of thirty-one, H.P. Lovecraft officially became a professional writer by agreeing to pen a short horror serial for the weird-action pulp magazine Home Brew. The serial was six gruesome tales inspired by Mary Shelly's Frankenstein, and was a group of stories Lovecraft considered to be his «poorest work... stuff done to order for a vulgar magazine, and written down to the herd's level.» Contrary to Lovecraft's opinion of his own work, Re-animator is a very enjoyable macabre tale filled with suspense and dread. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Herbert West reads Herbert West
Lovecraft is an author whose works are inherently ill-suited to film adaptations, and inherently suited to audio adaptations.Much of the thrill of his stories is in his words and in the unseen, something that plays out so much better in the Theater of the Mind.

I bought this CD many years ago (thankfully, considering the after-market price tag) and I still listen to it without fail a few times a year. This is an audio book rather than an audio play, with Jeffrey Combs dramatically reading Lovecraft's "Herbert West: Reanimator."Combs, of course, made the role infamous with the loose screen adaptation Re-Animator, and it is nice to see him here pay homage to the origin of the cult classic movie.Fans of the film might be surprised at how dissimilar the original is to the film, but I personally enjoy both versions.

Lovecraft himself was not fond of "Herbert West:Reanimator," calling it "stuff done to order for a vulgar magazine, and written down to the herd's level."The world has never agreed with him on that score though, and in this story Lovecraft introduces the concept of the flesh-eating zombie, something that would come to be an entire genre unto itself.

Combs has a great voice for reading the story, as seeing as how "Herbert West: Reanimator" is largely told from a first-person point of view having a single voice works well for the production. There are minimal sound effects or music, and the effects are very subtle.Combs acts the story (more so that simply reading it) in a controlled way, with effective emotion in his voice when appropriate.

The cover of this CD is done by artist Dennis Detwiller, who would go on to found Pagan Publishing which produced the modern Call of Cthulhu setting Delta Green.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful reading
With crisp, clear audio and minimal music or sound FX - sometimes almost unnoticeable in its subtlety - Jeff Combs brings his unique voice and cadence to one of Lovecraft's least favorite yet most popular stories. Combs' delivery is suffused with the quiet dread he is so good at affecting, and which so well suits this tale. A great listen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Herbert West Reanimator - Tips on Buying...
I was going to buy this audiobook from Amazon.com but I thought that the price tag of $60.00 was a BIT much...So I searched around and found a website called dagon.com. It offered the CD for $15.00 with shipping! "What a DEAL!" I said to myself and bought it right then and there. The story was very complelling but very different to what is portrayed on screen, for example, Dr. Carl Hill isn't even in the book, there is a character call Sergent Clapam Lee in his place and the story follows Herbert West from his college days to his death at the hands of own creations, much like Dr. Frankenstein. But the really cool thing was that Jeffery Combs was reading it, so you got the feel of the films and the voice of Herbert West himself relating the events to you. BTW dagon.com also offers Cthulu, Arkham Massachusetts and Arkham Mistonic University merchandise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lovecraft and Combs At Their Most Effective
Lovecraft was a writer for whom I always felt a certain ambivalence, but as I've grown older, I've been able to appreciate his nightmare visions and imagery much more than I did as a callow teen. I believe Lovecraft tended to disavow the Herbert West story as pulp melodrama, but it's always been among my favorite volumes of horror. Although it adheres to a deceptively conventional horror framework in terms of its plot development and living-dead theme, it is profoundly creepier and more disturbing than anything that was being done at the time, or that's been done subsequently. A tale of pseudo-scientific necromancy, Lovecraft charts the degeneration of Herbert West from his early days as a fervent visionary to his final dissolution as an obsessed madman. Forget King or Koontz; Lovecraft is still the only heir apparent to Poe. The story benefits from a restraint (Lovecraft had an unfortunate tendency to be verbose) and descriptive conciseness, but its ultimate efficacy comes from the multitude of disturbing, chilling images that populate the narrative. Unlike the movie version (in which Combs played the title character sublimely), there's little humor here to lessen the miasmic atmosphere of steadily-increasing horror and menace. This CD hasn't been all that easy to obtain, but for me its been well worth the effort I put into acquiring it and has become an indispensable part of my Lovecraft collection. The nightmarish horrors that West (Lovecraft) evokes from the grave will haunt your dreams long after you've listened to this CD. ... Read more

Product Description
Alla Rakha was the tabla virtuoso best known for his many concert tours and recordings with Ravi Shankar. This book and videotape is Alla Rakha’s step-by-step introduction to a single tabla solo in the Punjab style, with its characteristic compositions and manner of striking the drum.

Alla Rakha selected the compositions to be included in the book; the finger placement photographs are of Alla Rakha’s hands, and the videotape is a recording of Alla Rakha playing, reciting and teaching the compositions.

The text features an in-depth analysis of the structure of each composition, with special emphasis on the logic of development in the theme and variation forms.

A Special Note about the videotape...
Fourteen years after the original publication of the book LEARNING TABLA WITH ALLA RAKHA, the accompanying videotape has finally been released.Harihar Rao narrates as Alla Rakha carefully demonstrates each stroke, phrase and theme from the accompanying book.

Next, while Alla Rakha recites each composition to melodic accompaniment, a computer- generated “karaoke” style animation shows the unfolding structure of the composition and the beat of the rhythmic cycle.

Finally, with the camera tight on his hands, Alla Rakha plays each composition. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing
I was really excited to get this video and waited awhile for it to be available for purchase.Unfortunately, the quality is very low.Firstly, the book is very poorly printed. Most of the images and illustrations in the book so fuzzy that you can barely make out what it's trying to convey. The video, which is what I was most excited about, is horrible quality. It looks like they took a YouTube video and put it on a VHS.Really poor video quality and the audio is just as bad.Even though there are close mics shown, the audio sounds very echoey; like they had the mics up in the rafters. Worse still, the audio isn't completely in sync with the video! For a video that's trying to convey percussion technique, this is ridiculous.
Don't waste your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great opportunity to watch a master teach
If you're reading this, you probably already know Alla Rakha's bio. This video is a rare glimpse into one of his group class sessions. The audio is poor quality by today's standards, but it is clear enough to hear. Although I am a student of Tabla, I had hoped for some good instruction from this recording, but was much more interested in seeing footage of the master at work. The instruction is good, and it parallels the booklet that is paired with the vid. The precision of his playing is highlighted by the examples in the vid, and there is plenty for students of all levels to enjoy and learn from.

2-0 out of 5 stars poor physical quality
Nothing negative to say about the content of this learning tool...it was recorded before the advent of digital media. It's wonderful to have a recording of Ustadji teaching step by step. However, it does not do justice to the great Ustad Alla Rakha to have this product not updated so that the media is converted to VCD and the book reproduced with some quality. My copy of the book arrived stamped improperly so that pages were falling out. I asked for and got a replacement but that one was also defective. It's not worth holding onto in this condition. They both went back for a refund.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Rare Glimpse of the Master of Tabla
"Learning Tabla with Alla Rakha" (book and audio cassette) is an archival document as well as a valuble teaching tool for those who wish to play tabla in the style of the Punjab Gharana as taught by Ustad Alla Rakha, one of the very top tier of Indian classical musicians and certainly the worldwide shining star of tabla in the mid through latter part of the 20th century. Many hundreds of students of tabla have sat before Ustad Alla Rakha for lessons and learning through watching and listening. For those who did not have that chance, there is very little in the way of archival material to view.Although the video and book were made on a tight budget, and the video is in black and white with obvious signs of age, the sound is clear and the picture good enough to get the essence of the great Ustad in his early 50's, when he was still a powerhouse of tabla and a mystical magician of rhythm. You will hear the master play compositions accompanied by sarod lehara, the melodic anchor of the rhythm cycle in the traditional manner, while the "bols" are written on the bottom of the screen.A "bouncing ball"is synched to the exact timing of the compositions as Ustad Alla Rakha plays, making it easy for the intermediate student to follow. The other side of the cassette has the sarod lehara playing solo, where the student can then practise the compositions to the lehara as the Ustad has done on the "A" side of the cassette and video. All compositions and variations are writtendown in the book. The practitioner must keep in mind that the video was made in the early seventies, and was lost for many years. For the serious student or musicologist, this is a unique and well conceived package to help to understand and learn tabla. In my opinion, those who criticize the production of the video and book are missing the point. There is currently nothing available similar to this for purchase. The information has been carefully collated and presented in a logical mannner according to the wishes of Ustad Alla Rakha. The author,Jeff Feldman was a student of Ustadji's and made sure that Ustad Alla Rakha approved of the contents of the video and book before publication.Ustadji personally expressed to me his satisfaction with the entire production.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good companion book for beginners
I recently purchased Abbaji's (Alla Rakha Khan Sahib) book and accompanying video tape.I have been playing tabla for 2 decades now and had the privilege during my college years of attending two summer sessions with Ustad Zakir Hussain, who is Ustad Alla Rakha's son.

My primary reason for purchasing the book and tape was to see if it would be appropriate as teaching materials.I now teach tabla to beginner and intermediate students.I found the book to have a lot of information and material that examined the theory behind tabla compositions and phrases (bols). However, I am not going to use it as a teaching tool for young kids.

I will however recommend this book and videotape to those that are starting off and want to have a sense of what the basic strokes and patterns are on this incredible drum. The videotape is quite good. The quality is fair, in that it is not a professional recording. However there is a lot of footage of Ustad Alla Rakha.

In my opinion, the two scenarios where this book and videotape will benefit you the most are:
- If you are an adult learning tabla with a teacher. This book will complement what you are learning and will give you theory and background in the Punjab style.
- If you do not have access to any teachers for face to face lessons, are a drummer, have some percussion background, and want to attempt playing tabla.

Best of luck and keep playing!
