I love the movie, I'd have to say it's one of the best in the series, so when I saw they made a novel of it I knew I needed to pick it up...glad I did, it has the things that made the movie work + some other things that make the book a fun and creepy read. The great thing for me is that I now have...the movie, the book and the soundtrack. I suggest you find it (the soundtrack) here and order it along with this book. It's 212 pages of good reading, along with pictures from the movie.

The perfect novelization to the last (Sure it is) Nightmare on Elm Street movie. The book itself is an interesting read and the photos are worth a look. The entire mood of the movie is caught on the pages and if you love these movies like I do, you won't be able to put it down.

An Author's Best Nightmare Come True
This novelization (of probably the best film in the Elm Street series) is an incredible work of fiction. The story of a film crew who discovers that their fictional creation, Freddy, is all to real is superbly acted out.Credit should go to Wes Craven for his script, but Bergantino made greatadditions to this piece, such as: excerpts from a (fictional?) journal inwhich David begins having bad dreams; clippings of (fictional?) newsarticles discussing bizzare deaths; and characterization which is sobelievable that one cannot doubt that David talked to the actual crew ofthe film. The book focusses more on the psycological effects on thecharacters than on blood and gore. Don't get me wrong, in the scenes wheregore abounds -- boy, does it abound. But in the scenes where the charactersare hit with the realization that what they have acted as and with isactually real and attacking them, one cannot help but be moved. Captivating!
I thought Wes Craven only did movies. My co worker turned me onto this book. I didn't want to put it down. I'm so very glad I read this. This book is captivating and definitely a page turner

Craven has a way with words.
I was hoping this book would be about evil clones, but I was surprised (pleasantly) to find it's more of a romantic sci-fi thriller. There's plenty of gore and sex, though, to satisfy those looking for that sort of thing. It's competently written and I thought the ending was perfect. Bravo, Wes Craven. Sorry it took me 8 years to get around to reading it. I remember hearing about this book around the time Scream 3 hit theaters, and I wanted to check it out then.

A Nightmare on Stereotype Street
This is a pretty well-written debut novel from film auteur Wes Craven, though it loses points for lacking originality and for having the feel of a quickie book that was tailored for purposes of a future screenplay. Craven certainly knows how to weave an intricate plot and he can stage plenty of exciting action and suspense. However, Craven took a real wrong turn upon writing this novel because he turned away from his core strengths (horror and the surreal) and embarked on a completely typical techno-thriller of the long-overdone Crichton/Cook/Clancy strain. In short, we have a conspiracy of corrupt government scientists who will stop at nothing to reach their evil goals, while a small circle of righteous good guys try to save the world. It's been done - a lot.

Granted, Craven's fictional conspiracy is quite creative, as the evil eggheads have concocted a unique method of achieving their own immortality (though there are a few too many incredible coincidences and implausible leaps of logic). Unfortunately the majority of the novel depends on stock thriller stereotypes, like the single formerly corrupt scientist who suddenly develops a conscience, the saboteur working from the inside and mysteriously helping the protagonists, the robotic government spooks who serve as the bad guys, the innocent woman who gets mixed up in the conspiracy against her will but becomes the (un-)surprisingly valiant heroine, the brutal bureaucrat who keeps the money flowing, and the evil genius who refuses to contemplate his actions. These template characters rarely rise above the shallow and behave as would be expected in a novel of this genre, regardless of the rather unique travails they face as parts of the backdrop conspiracy. Meanwhile, the action leading up to the climax is fairly exciting, but once again there are very few surprises and Craven is unable to move beyond stock screenplay suspense devices.As a filmmaker, Wes Craven is known for trying new things, even if they don't always work. But in his first stint as a novelist, all he did was competently replicate the shopworn ideas of others. [~doomsdayer520~]

If I Only Had A Brain....
You quickly learn that this is a first novel and pray to the Higher Being of choice that the "author" find his true calling.The tale is contrived, the characters are phony and the whole thing reads like one of those awful books that are nothing but expanded screeplays (you can almost hear "ACTION!"). Here's an original plot - evil scientists work in secret for years of finding IMMORTALITY.It's not what you think. They don't use drugs or DNA modification or even download your mind to a PC. No, the Fountain Society creates clones for future "use".Yes, that's correct. This stunning secret is important only because these 30 something clones serve as new hosts for our important scientist braim - never mind that these folks have families and a life. Sure it's murder but it's for the our own good so who are we to argue?

Dialogue is strictly movie fare, complexity and subtlety are not our writer's cup of tea. Characters are caricatures - growling army Colonel, eager politicians, scheming scientist, beautiful model, conflicted young student, etc. The "science" (LOL) is hokey, especially the idea that the replanted person retains memories, skills and preferences of the former brain. Now unless a recent discovery has located synapses in our bottoms or big toe, this is highly unlikely. Even more unlikely - the clones of a husband and wife meet and have an affair. He is apparently dies only we know he was kidnapped for nefarious purposes. For some insane reason, our heroine, acting on a hunch, leaves her native Switzerland for the very island where boyfriend is now walking around with a new brain. And wouldn't you know - the first night he takes a jog on the beach there she is - the woman of his (wet) dreams. They have lustful beach sex and he is torn between his old wife and hot clone (yes, it is that silly). But first we have the requisite chase scene where teams of inept military types bungle every capture attempt in a replay of Dumb & Dumber. You quickly turn pages from one airport to the next (snore)only to arrive at a Hollywood ending that can be seen a mile away. Our hero makes the ultimate sacrifice & flies into the compound at the exact moment Evil Scientist #1 was on the verge of getting his new body - drats!

Very good
This is the kind of books I like, it never goes out of the story with descriptions and descriptions that the only thing they do is to fill pages that the writer doesn't know how to fill, the end of the book is not so good but the rest of it will keep you reading, and the final question is: could it be possible in the near future?
As we can see in this book, with this kind of technology everybody will suffer sooner or later, because nobody can say to another person how to live his life, no matter if you think exactly like the other person or you know how or what thinks that person. ... Read more

Craven For More!
At first thought, many people probably would have thought director Wes Craven to be some kind of unbalanced oddball because of some of the films he has made. Not to mention some of the gnarly and overly violent scenes he has created in his numerous films. What kind of a person would of made "The Last House On The Left", or "The Hills Have Eyes"?. Or have a geiser of blood shooting up from a teenaged boy's bed in the original "A Nightmare On Elm Street"?. Well, Mr. Craven. That's who. Newbies just finding his work and learning more about him, might be surprised to find that Mr. Craven is the exact opposite of what you would of thought. Instead of coming across as some crazy horror film director, he comes across more as a polished and highly intelligent man who looks and dresses like a college professor. "Freddy" star Robert Englund even once made that comment after meeting Wes for the first time after auditioning for the first Freddy movie. This book delves right into the entirety of Wes' career and offers glimpses into the makings of each ones, not to mention his own life. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on August 2, 1939. One other interesting note was how his family were a deeply religious baptist family. The religion and the nature of his family's religion is something Wes goes on to discuss a bit further in the book. It's also incredibly interesting to know that Wes never saw a movie until
he wasin college. The good and the bad from his work is brought to the forefront and dissected. A running theme thru the book is the effect that horror, and many of Wes' films, have had on the world. Is it good?. Is it harmful to children?. Is it responsible when someone commits a crime and says they did because of watching "Scream" or any other movie?. That is some of the interesting bits you will read about in this book. Author Brian J. Robb, an autobiogrpaher who has done work on such other people as Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, River Phoenix, and Leonardo DiCaprio, does a nice job of getting the information there and making it easily accessible and interesting to read. Granted, the book isn't entirely perfect. It's a thin and light book that could probably be read in one sitting. Also, many of the quotes seem like they were taken from many other sources. It doesn't feel like Wes had directly talked to this book or was involved in any interviews for it. I'm just guessing. It would of been better if it had a tad more in depth, but I'm not really complaining for as it is a great book. The "Nightmare On Elm Street" films are thoroughly researched and talked about here. It is kind of odd that every single one is accounted for since 4 of them had nothing really to do with Wes at all. I did get the feeling that Wes wasn't properly treated at time by New Line over the "Elm Street" series. These films were what really made Wes known, until a little movie called "Scream" came out to terrify theatergoers in 1996 and made Wes not only a household name again, but proved that he is master and back at the top of the horror list. Much talk and detail goes into all 3 of the "Scream" films as well. Overall, this is avery entertaining and enjoyable read. From his trouble with getting a film done, going without money, and the ever present cencorships board, and other things you will read about in this book, Wes Craven has had his struggles. But as always, he rolls with the punches and he always gets back on his feet again. This is a book that satisfy fans, newcomers to him and his work, and genre buffs all over the world.

For Craven fans only
This is designed for big, big, big fans of Wes Craven. It is a slim book whose text seems to be primarily based on magazine articles and newspaper clips. The book gives a fairly good overview of Craven's history and philosophy in a readable and serviceable style.

RECOMMENDED!
This is a brilliant book and particually good if your a big fan of Freddy Krueger films, like me. It tells us of Wes Cravens past and of his past and present movies.

Really into it
The best way to describe this book is reverent.This is a seriously in depth look at Wes Craven's demented debut, Last House on the Left.

Szulkin has done a ton of research.There are countless references in here to obscure genre work, foreign films, etc, etc.Plenty of pictures, too, big, bright and shiny pictures of various artwork from the film and its unofficial 'sequels', grisly scenes, and more.Whatever you think of the film, this is an impressive book.

Last House on the Left is definitely demented, but looking at the current state of the horror genre, it holds up pretty well.The raw, grainy quality and the depiction of the kind of sick, stark horror you read about in the papers--this is definitely not a movie that glorifies crime and murder as other slick, entertaining films do.Craven would do similar things later in the decade with The Hills Have Eyes, another ultra low-budget but creepy study of an American family.

Video nasty buffs and horror fans will highly appreciate such a respectful book about an oft-disrespected and reviled film.I mean, this is the second, revised edition(!)That is dedication, folks.

Survived and Loved It
I did find myself in a horror movie - as soon as I flipped open the first page of this little handbook. I read it all in one sitting, and loved it so much I read it again the next day. The book is a treasure for any horror movie buff, and the information is on point. With an introduction from the master of horror himself, Wes Craven, the book takes on a hilarious perspective on the evils of babysitting, horror movie sins, surviving a cemetary and so many other horror movie cliches. It is so entertaining, I'll find myself grabbing for it as soon as I pop a scary movie into the DVD player. I see a scene, open the book and find the information I am looking for. Yes, if you are a doubter, you will not survive. Yes, if you go to investigate a strange noise you have no buisness investigating, you will not survive. Always know your exit strategy, and always expect the unexpected. This book was unexpecting, and I recommend it to anyone who wants a hilarious, entertaining, and in depth guide to surviving anything and everything that goes bump in the night.

It was exactly what I expected and shipped MUCH quicker than I thought it would, which was pleasantly surprising =)

A satirical tribute to definitive horror movies.
How to Survive a Horror Movie is several chapters giving advice on how to not get killed in the movie you've suddenly become trapped in. It does this with chapters devoted to realizing you're in a horror movie, determining what kind of horror movie you're in and what you do for each specific survival scenario that is thrown at you in the specific movie (what to do if your plane has snakes, how to survive a slasher movie, what to do if your children has corn, etc.). Each chapter is meant to make you laugh (as if you didn't know that already), and each chapter is filled with tables, charts and lists of possible outcomes to more specified scenarios, like how to determine if your child is possessed, all the way making very obvious references to several iconic horror movies, as well as some notoriously terrible horror movies. At the end of the book, he lists several horror movies that are definitive in the genre, followed by some atrocious examples of the genre, or just terrible sequels. A perfect present for a horror movie fan.

Any horror fan will be delighted to turn the pages of this book.It delves into hilarious cliches and horror trends that horror fans along with anyone who's ever seen a horror movie are bound to appreciate.Its separated into sections based on horror movie type (slasher, supernatural, etc.) and you can easily jump around if you wish.Its so much fun and easy to read.Plus, the list of recommended horror movies at the end really provides some great input about movies you may have never seen.This is definitely a must have for horror fans.

Horror Movie Survival With a Dose of Humor and a Grain of Salt...
Caution, thus book may make you laugh out loud... Or wince slightly. Maybe both?

On the whole I found this book to be quite entertaining and rather funny in many parts. Basically it's a run-down of all the horror movie clichés and how to avoid them. Moreover, it gives you practical tips on how to survive if you find yourself embroiled in a typical horror movie...

The book comes with a foreword by Wes Craven, a healthy dose of humor, is well-illustrated and generally pretty slick. Some sections are definitely funnier than others, so it's a little uneven in that regard. But, I figure you need to have a few less-funny moments in order to truly appreciate the gut-busting riffs when you run across them.

If you like horror, and a little comedy, I'd definitely recommend giving this book a try. Good coffee-table or bathroom reading, if nothing else.
