5-0 out of 5 stars Bestbook on makeupI've ever seen
I think people like to bag this book simply because Cindy Crawford wrote it.It's like "oh, she's a model, professionals do her makeup and she has to be too dumb to write anything worthwhile anyway".Actually this is the best book I've ever seen on makeup and the one I'd pick above any other to recommend and I'm a qualified makeup artist myself.

A lot of the things you'll find in this book make up the foundation of the course where I studied (the section in beauty as opposed to screen and theatrical). Why? - because it's the essentials of what beauty and everyday makeup is all about. It gives you all the basics and then pointers to enable you to develop your own style. It's also easy to follow, well written and yet very comprehensive.

I've personally found that most books by professional makeup artists only appear to help you, but in reality just give a lot of pretty pictures with little workable substance. And if you know what you're looking at, most of their 'tips' and methods arn't that great either. These books have struck me overall as being more for self-promotion then anything else.A makeup artist with a book full of glossy model and celebrity photo's, if it sells well, will instantly become a 'star' makeup artist.

Totally recommend this book for actually delivering what it promises to.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
I love this book! I think because Cindy Crawford has so much experience with the world of beauty that she cuts through all the bull, and gets to basic stuff if you want to wear make-up but do not want to look like a floozy. Plus, she gives great tips on buying makeup, using makeup, etc. She gives unvarnished but very helpful advice. It is the best book I have seen on beauty tips. Plus the pictures and silver cover are cool too. I am surprised it is not on shelves anymore. I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't know what they are doing when it comes to makeup.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for basic instruction
this book is good if you want to learn the basics of makeup use. crawford tells you how to apply, what to apply with, what to apply on, what to buy, etc...all the basics. the color tear sheet in the back is good to take when going shopping--it gives handy tips on picking the right products. as other reviewers have said, the pictures tend to be more glamour shots than instruction, but the photos of the actual makeup products and tools are good. If you are looking for a basic instruction book, this is good. If you already know the basics, you maybe should look elsewhere.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is a horrible book....I learned not one piece of info
This is a remnant of the 90's no doubt and Cindy Crawford thought
she could put out a mediocre book with her name on it and it would sell well.
Well I don't know how it sold...but it was a total waste of money on
my part. If you are a woman and have been doing your own makeup for
3 months or more...trust me, Cindy Crawford does not know much more than you
or I. Save your money ladies....this is a waste of pulp.

1-0 out of 5 stars Completely Useless for Anyone Over 12
Cindy Crawford is a model who is fortunate enough to have professional makeup artists apply her makeup. You would think with access to these professionals, she would have learned some more impressive techniques on the way.Read the disappointing reviews of this book, and don't make the mistake I did and buy the book anyway!

This book is not for people who don't know whether to use liquid or powder makeup. This book is for people who can't pronounce the word makeup.I imagine that this book would be a good gift for a young girl who is just starting to learn how to wear makeup. It faithfully catalogues the different types and textures of makeup and the types of brushes used. However it gives NO COMMENTARY on which types of makeup should be used for different looks.Applying foundation and skin care are the main things emphasized. Anyone who has been wearing makeup for even a brief time knows what is out there and knows how to put the simple products on.There is no mention in this book of color choice, contouring, shading, or more sophisticated styles. These are the difficult aspects of makeup that very few people can pick up on their own and require a book to learn. The "techiques" and lists of makeup types that obtain from this book can easily be figured out by a simple trip to the makeup counter.

Another tell-tale sign of a bad makeup book is the lack of pictures featuring different looks on different faces. The only face in this book is Cindy Crawford, and all the makeup looks are natural, and might very well be from the same makeup session. In every picture it doesn't even look like she's wearing makeup.Obviously, I don't think the ground breaking techniques this book mentions (blending is important, shocking!) make her look good. The fact that she's Cindy Crawford makes her look good. The pictures are useless, and they all look the same.

The makeup philosophy Crawford swears by gives the best possible insight into the quality of the this book.

"Makeup should not take more than 5 minutes"

If a rudimentary understanding of makeup is what you require, then this book is the perfect present for your 13th birthday. However, by your sweet sixteen you're going to need something with a lot more substance than this.Only a model with a professional makeup artist to rely upon can get by with this simplistic knowledge of makeup. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
This book teaches really useful skills in an easy to understand way. The book covers face shape and styles to compliment that, easy to use techniques, products, etc. Most books seem to either just show styles or dont seem to be able to write about how to create that style at home in a way that works for most people. This book is in a class of its own. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great basic information
This book covers all the basic information on everything about hair: color, texture, brushes, tools, styling, cleansing and conditioning. One of my favorite parts is when the author addresses hair texture and styling, so you can get control over your hair no matter how curly or straight.

The only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because a few of the styles are outdated, but overall valuable to an amateur at hair.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book!
This is a great book.It is like an owners manual for your hair.It tells you everything about; brushes, combs, tools, hairtype, and the how to for all the styles and cuts.I didn't see anything offending, all I saw was a well written book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great book
You can't see anything but the heads and sometimes bare shoulders of the girls. There was one small picture of a playboy cover, but that girl was completed covered too.I don't see how that's offensive at all.About the hairstyles, they were mostly practical and sofisticated, just what I was looking for!I have Charles Worthington's complete book of hairstyling and found that most of those hairstyles were wild and no normal person would ever wear their hair that way. That is not the case of this book.I highly recommend it.I would only wish for even more pictures of styles!

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm Offended
I am appalled at the grammar in some of our population. What kind of school did "Marsha from Arizona" attend? Did she graduate? Woman, the word is "offended," not "affended."The word is "whipped,' not "whiped."What a sad commnentary on our school system. ... Read more

Product Description
The first language every child learns to speak and read is body language. In this wonderfully playful picture book, one of the most recognized faces in America (along with her young son, Presley) shows us how to use our faces to say just about anything to our young loved ones! Filled with silly sounding onomatopoeic words, this delightful read-aloud will have adults smiling, frowning, wrinkling their noses, and making other funny faces with every line. Infants and toddlers find out how expressive they can be while adults learn that they are most beautiful in their children's eyes when they simply play, listen and laugh together!Amazon.com Review
Supermodel Cindy Crawford and her young son, Presley, show moms and dads that communication does not begin and end with spoken words. Silly faces, flailing arms, big grins, a fist rubbing an eye--all these gestures and expressions speak volumes when Baby doesn't quite have the words to communicate feelings and needs. And when parents respond to their infants' body language, they are sending a very clear message: "I hear you. I'm here for you. You're safe. I love you."

About Face is a bouncy, playful romp with a valuable ulterior motive: to get parents to follow their intuition when it comes to communicating with their babies--and to encourage children to fall in love with words and other forms of language. Author Ellen Schecter's goofy wordplay ("Let's be GROWL-Y, prowl-y, howl-y, and jowl-y, then share grrreat big bear HUGS when we're done.") make the text amusing for readers, even if the rhymes are somewhat forced at times. Photographer Jade Albert and illustrator Paul Harwood intertwine cute photos of babies (and Crawford) with imaginative pastel designs. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointed
I was a little disappointd about this book and was glad that I oniy paid half price on it.Because the half price was all it was really worth. Some of thecontents in the book was poorly written. The only positive thing that I saw in the book was a wonderful relationship between Cindy Crawford and her son, Prestley. And that was it!!

4-0 out of 5 stars About Face, A terrific book for my 20 month old!
An adorable book! My son loves when I read the lyrical words and imitate the photos in the book. It takes traditional rhyming and typical finger plays one step further to engage your child with facial gestures, body movements and language. My son Henry laughs and loves our time together when we use the book as inspiration for our own play. Cindy Crawford's introduction is sweet and poignant and gives insight to her love of Motherhood and appreciation of her own Mother.Seeing Cindy get silly can be an impetus for all mothers to do the same!

5-0 out of 5 stars preferred reading for toddlers
i bought this book for my niece and nephew, along with several others but this is the one they ask for all the time. they love the pictures and the funny faces we make when we read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent even for little babies
Our 20 month old and our 4 month old LOVE this book, we read it to them all the time. They love to look at the babies' pictures and play along with the toe kisses. It really is wonderful even for little infants !

5-0 out of 5 stars Mother of a 1 year old
I highly recommend this book. The story line is whimsical and the vibrant pictures would engage any child. There is even a page to personalize the book with a photo of mom and child. My son absolutely loves it and pulls it off the shelf every night at bedtime. His two favorite pages have pictures of several children displaying various emotions. He also loves the picture of Cindy Crawford pretending to be a monkey.By purchasing the book, I also felt good that portions of the proceeds will go to the charity Reading is Fundamental.I've bought the book as gifts for several friends who have also really enjoyed it. ... Product Description
In August of 2005, a grieving mother and her supporters laid siege to Crawford, Texas.Cindy Sheehan set up camp outside of President Bushs ranch, determined to find some answers. For 26 days, all eyes were on Camp Casey.

At the center of it all was Crawford's own Lone Star Iconoclast. In the heart of the reddest of Red States, The Iconoclastfound itself caught between the public's (deeply conservative) expectations, and the papers publisher, W. Leon Smiths, sense of journalistic duty to report objectively. THE VIGIL is an invaluable record of The Iconoclasts coverage, with Sheehan herself providing a scene-setting foreword.

The result is a high stakes, blow-by-blow account of the events as they unfolded. You experience this vigil right along with the writers and participants: the heat, the fire ants, the gunplay, the celebrity appearances, and the intense emotional rollercoaster that has yet to end. Smith and his crew demonstrated a level of professional virtue thatto quote Sheehan herselfshines like a lone spark of integrity in the prairie darkness. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LIKE ANTIGONE CONFRONTING KING CREON, LIKE ELEKTRA IN MOURNING, THIS EPIC DOCUMENT EMERGES AS ETERNAL
Read this now again.

If anything survives the precipitous collapse of the US Empire, this document will, as evidence of one courageous mother who mourned her son sent to die in a meaningless war, like Uriah, and confronted the distracted emperor asking why.

Like Antigone seeking honorably to lay her dead to rest, denied by an uncaring king; like the mourning which becomes Elektra. See for instance, those who do not know: Sophokles Elektra (New Directions Paperbook, 683) or Antigone, Oedipus the King, Electra (Oxford World's Classics) or Sophocles I: Oedipus The King, Oedipus at Colonus, Antigone (The Complete Greek Tragedies).

Cindy Sheehan is our own Antigone. Read her saga here, her courage, her mourning that others need not mourn their own dead.

This document will survive the present fall, as it is universal and eternal, wherever there are mothers, and sons sent to war for no reason.

See also for such courageous and unarmed witness such documents as The Time's Discipline: The Eight Beatitudes and Nuclear Resistance.

And may God bless Cindy Sheehan.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an EXCELLENT BOOK
Well, some reviewers who are warmongers obviously have their agendas and their activists who have not read the books they are reviewing. They are part of the Neo-Con conspiracy to keep the American public in the dark about the truth. I am the author of "Land of Childhood's Fears" - a book about the Vietnam War - (just google the title and see) and so I speak with a bit of authority. This book is very true-to-life. It is a glaring example of the attitude of the current administration - THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT US - THEY NEVER CARED ABOUT ANYTHING BUT THEIR OWN GREED. My Web site has video Documentaries you can download FREE - So before you buy the negative reviews on Cindy Sheehan, learn the TRUTH. Read this book, and my book "Land of Childhood's Fears" which you can also get at Amazon. Take a week to read these two books, and your views about the war in Iraq will drastically change - download the videos from my web site and your entire paradigm structure about the country you live in will change. In the Bible, 2 Peter Chapter 3, it says that in the last days, people are "WILLINGLY IGNORANT". It is a shame that people don't WANT to learn the truth, because what they would have to do to ACT on that truth is unthinkable.

1-0 out of 5 stars pathetic worthless dispicable mediawhore
very bad read.Cindy should go back and take and english class.Facts given in book contradict facts published by the wire services AP AFP Reuters, and if you search local texas blogs the disconnect gets scary.I'd call her a mediawhore but I would have to apologize to whores.

4-0 out of 5 stars "I Want The Truth-as well"
Cindy Sheehan had every mothers worstnightmare come true. We are "supposed" to be a country of freedom of speech, that includes camping on even a presidents near by lawn. With this in mind i was glad i read this account of Cindy's 26 days.I found that Mr. Smith had told the story very clear and showedgreat insight to those around at "Camp Casey" .

5-0 out of 5 stars objective reporting
Several of the negative reviews for this book seem politically motivated only and also contain incorrect information. The book, first of all, is not written by Sheehan and she will not profit from sales. Secondly, the book is an accounting of not only the pro-Sheehan Camp Casey but also the pro-Bush/pro-war side of things. It is objective and also contains interviews with some interesting people who were in Crawford, TX last August. The perspectives of the reporters were compelling as well, and one was decidely NOT pro-Sheehan, if you read between the lines. The editor added his comments about the challenges of a small town newspaper with minimal staff taking on the task of covering this event on almost an hourly basis for 26 days.It is a must for journalism classes everywhere. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Wasn't impressed
I love Body for Life and I am not at all pleased with this DVD. I feel like I wasted my money. I hate to say it but Pamela Peeke kind of has an attiutde that wasn't conducive to me wanting to use it or watch it again. Sorry.

1-0 out of 5 stars Glad I got it from the library
I was considering purchasing both the book and cd - now I'm thrilled I didn't. Beyond the lack of resemblance to Phillips' program being called "girlfriend" was ridiculous. Save your money.

1-0 out of 5 stars JUST PLAIN BAD
ON DR. PAMELA PEEKES'DVD: I AM OUT OF SHAPE, BUT READY FOR A WORKOUT!THIS PROVIDED A WORKOUT THAT AN AMATURE WOULD BE BORED WITH.DON'T EXPECT TO BREAK A SWEAT, THE POSSITIVE IS THAT YOU WON'T HAVE SORE MUSCLES. ON DR. PAMELA PEEK'S BOOK, BODY FOR LIFE FOR WOMEN- LOVE IT!WHAT HAPPENED?

2-0 out of 5 stars Bill, please write a book for women!!!
I read the original BFL and found it to be fantastic, so when I saw a BFL for women I was thrilled, without a second thought I bought it.It has good concepts like dividing women's life into phases, but that's it.Even though the author tried to appeal to women, I found the original BFL much more motivating.Maybe this book is OK for women who have not read other books or who have not followed a single program, but for me it was dissappointing, I felt much more involved with a male author than by a woman!!! Program lacks stucture, I can'timagine what a man would think about this book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Motivational
Body For life is becomeing a classic for anyone starting out trying to get rid of the fat and get into great shape. Recommended for anyone who doesn't know the basics and needs help. The diet section throughout the book is good basic information while discussing supplements but any good protein or meal repleacement will work.
Overall very good for women.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book for school -- fell in love with it
This was a required book for a course I loved. This book is one of the things that made the course so wonderful. If you want to understand the research and science behind energy work, this is the book for you!

1-0 out of 5 stars Successfully proves that healing and energy medicine do not work!
This book reviews the research on distant and spiritual healing, mind-matter interaction, intentionality and energy medicine. Jonas and Crawford, both of the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Maryland, evaluate more than 2,200 studies, in ten areas. Using the accepted criteria of scientific evidence, they graded each of the ten A to F, from A the highest, with at least three independent, high-quality studies, to F the lowest.

The results were: religious practices - D, prayer - B, `energy' healing - B, Qigong (laboratory research) - C, Qigong (clinical research) - F, laboratory research on bio-energy - B, direct mental interaction with living systems: electrodermal activity - B, direct mental interaction with living systems: remote staring - B, research on mind-matter interactions: individuals - A, research on mind-matter interactions: groups - E.

The only area which meets Jonas and Crawford's standard is not a study of any kind of healing or energy medicine, but research on mind-matter interactions. As they write, "Of all the research described in the book, the REG [random event generator] data set is the only one in which there are experiments that meet all of the standard quality criteria and as such are considered fully adequate as evidence." This is a meta-analysis of 42 studies `examining attempts by individuals to influence random systems', presented in chapter 7, `Non-sensory access to information: the ganzfeld studies', by Marilyn Schlitz and Dean Radin, both of the Institute of Noetic Sciences in California.

How strong is this element, the strongest part of their whole case? Schlitz and Radin found that the worse the study, the more likely it was to find a significant effect. Only 28 of the studies even reported the results of these attempts to influence random systems. Why didn't the other 14? Was it because their success rates were so low? Even on the basis of this skewed sample, the success rate was only one in three. It's good that our real senses don't work this badly: if we only had a one in three chance of seeing a lorry coming towards us, we wouldn't last very long!

Schlitz and Radin conclude, "we can only speculate that some forms of intuitive medical diagnosis may have a telepathic component." Speculate? Some forms? May have? And why is it suddenly just about diagnosis, not about any form of healing at all? What an admission that the whole approach is bankrupt!

In general, healing - spiritual healing or healing at a distance - and energy medicine depend on breaking the known, proven laws of nature. As the philosopher David Hume noted long ago, it is always more likely that somebody is mistaken or lying than that natural law has been broken.

Supporters of healing and energy medicine use terms like `energy', `vital force' and `psyche' to describe something that allegedly can exist independently of our bodies. Again, none of these studies present any evidence for such a thing. In fact, there has never been any reliable evidence of life existing without a body, never any reliable evidence of a mind existing without a living brain to support it.

In the final chapter, David Hufford, of the Department of Humanities at Pennsylvania State College of Medicine, claims that osteopathy has "changed almost beyond recognition as the cost of entry to even marginal acceptance by the medical mainstream" - a ludicrously overstated claim, and a slur on both osteopathy and mainstream medicine. Of course, supporters of healing and energy medicine have to decry health practices that do work, to make room for healing and energy medicine. If healing and energy medicine did work, all the health professions, including osteopathy, would be unnecessary.

In sum, the evidence presented in Jonas and Crawford's book proves that healing and energy medicine do not work. As they sum up, "Conclusive evidence that these mental interactions result in healing of specific illnesses is lacking." None of the studies of the effects of prayer, `energy' healing, Qigong, bioenergy, energy medicine or spiritual healing, `meet all of the standard quality criteria'. Not one can be considered `fully adequate as evidence'. Wanting somebody to get better does not make them better, just as wanting something to be true does not make it true.

All the efforts to prove the validity of healing and energy medicine have been a huge waste of time and effort, as were the similar efforts to create perpetual motion machines and to turn lead into gold. All are contrary to the laws that govern matter. All are futile exercises in wishful thinking, denials of science and evasions of reality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Healing, Intention and Energy Medicine
Jonas et al.'s Healing, Intention and Energy Medicine is a compendium of research from a conference on Science and Spirituality held in 2000 at which I was a presenter. As the author of chapter 14 (I do not receive royalties), I am as impressed with the final form of the conference presentations as I was with the researchers and conference in general. The public at large is generally unaware that healing and intentionality has been the subject of laboratory investigations for over three decades. From the initial forays of Dr. Bernard Grad and (healer) Oskar Estabany in examining the influence of human consciousness/energy on animals and plants to the sophisticated experimentation of mental intention on equipment by Radin, Jahn & Dunne and others, Healing, ntention and Energy Medicine is a fascinating odyssey into the study of nonordinary healing and untapped human potentials well worth the exploration.
Jonas et al. have done justice to this body of work, presenting it in a clear, readable and entrancing form. ... Read more
