Stephen King's unparalleled imagination is in full force in this collection of four unabridged short stories originally found in the classic, Nightmares & Dreamscapes. An all-star cast of readers bring to life these timeless stories from the darkest places, including the tale Dolan's Cadillac: soon to be a feature film starring Christian Slater, Wes Bentley, and Emmanuelle Vaugier.

A widowed husband spends seven years plotting revenge for his wife's murder in Dolan's Cadillac. A school teacher discovers her students are not what they seem in Suffer the Little Children. In Crouch End, a woman fears that supernatural events may have led to her husband's disappearance. And in Rainy Season, a young couple is forced into the ultimate battle of Man vs. Nature when torrential rain turns deadly.

5-0 out of 5 stars eerie tales from a KING
Even if you don't likeStephen King, you have to admit that he's a darn good storyteller
If you're wondering what MIGHT scare him you have but to read, or in my case listen to DOLAN'S CADILLAC.
The imagination of this man is boundless and as creepy as slugs and centipedesslithering up your legs in the dark.
DOLAN'S CADILLAC is written, in MY opinion, in his old psychological eerie RichardBachman style.
The Audio book includes Rob, Lowe, Whoopee Goldberg, Tim Curry and Yeardley Smith. KING himself includes a brief insight into his style and why he (like me) still thinks short stories are still his favorite form of writing.

I will not give away the plot, but if you know anything about SK you know that he uses every possible angle to lure you in then PUSH something awful, something frightening right in your face.

Dolan's Cadillac is four short stories ending with the Title tale which is the longest.
Whoopie Goldberg does a great job onSUFFER THE LITTLE CHILDREN, a small peek into the minds oflittlin's when their spirit might not be so little?
The always splendid Tim Curry with his deep English accented voice takes you on a journey the CROUCH END a town that has an undercurrent of something sinister.
Will you get out? can you get out?

Stephen King has a really dark humorous sidehe will use something as everyday as a simple innocentsamphibious creature to wreak havoc on a town every seven years and only whenNEWBIES come to live but are warned with the truth, and still they do not believe.
The 'oldsters' are typicalNew Englanders with theirEAH'S andCAAR, speech, butclearly accepting of a phenomenon that they have come to know as THE RAINY SEASON.

Since I am the queen of wanting to seethe bad guy get theirs, I am always interested in seeing how SK will do what he does when the antagonist is so self serving and non caring that he has no regard for human life. What does a simple man do for revenge?Well what would you doif the criminal rode in a specially made bullet proof almost invincible automobile? You have to read DOLAN'S CADILLAC and find out.

Together for the first time on CD are three powerful and alluring stories of New Orleans’ Dynasty of witches, The Mayfair Witches.

Lasher, read by Joe Morton
At the heart of this extraordinary saga is Rowan Mayfair’s attempt to escape the evil spell and vision of the darkly compelling demon, Lasher, and his pursuit of her and their terrifying and exquisite child. It is a novel that moves around the globe, backward and forward through time, and between the human and demonic worlds.

The Witching Hour, read by Lindsay Crouse

Fiercely drawn to each other, the two fall in love and set out to solve the mystery of her past and his unwelcome gift.

Taltos, read by Tim Curry

TIM CURRY READS THE CLASSIC TALE!

"ALL CHILDREN, EXCEPT ONE, GROW UP."

And so begins the story of one of the most beloved characters in children's literature, Peter Pan. J.M. Barrie's classic tale, completely unabridged, features a boy who refuses to grow up, Tinker Bell the fairy, and the Darling children -- Wendy, John, and Michael. Their great adventure begins on the night that Peter flies into the Darling home looking for his shadow and teaches Wendy, John, and Michael how to fly with him back to the Neverland, where adventures happen every day.

Look for Tim Curry's brilliant reading of Geraldine McCaughrean's authorized sequel to Peter Pan: Peter Pan in Scarlet! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Find Peter Pan with a different reader
Tim Curry is a great actor, but he does not shine in this audiobook. He is never lively or fun in this, but instead intones each word ominously. He is not very good at doing different voices, and is particularly unskilled at female voices.
There are other unabridged versions of Peter Pan on audiobooks -- I encourage you to find a different reader if you and your children want to really enjoy the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful revisit to the classic
This is excellent. The whole Peter Pan story as it is unabridged and read by the wonderful Tim Curry.Tim Curry's reading brings the characters alive and gives different voices to the characters. He won an award for this reading and he deserved it.When listening to the cds, you think you are still a child and having the book read to you. This is the not the Disney version, but the way J. M. Barrie wrote the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Peter Pan read by Tim Curry
This is a smashing new audio CD of the entire Peter Pan story by J.M. Barrie. It is so nice to see the whole story read out unabridged by Tim Curry. His voice is ideal for the listener and brought back so many great childhood memories for me. My kids loved it too. The artwork on the front cover is super too - the colours are so vibrant. Well done Simon & Schuster! ... Read more

Product Description

And so the man from Pisa probed, watched, measured, and tested. He used the dripping of water to gauge time, hand spans and arm lengths to find distance. Where Aristotle had asked why things moved, Galileo asked how.

History is full of explorers, inventors, and revolutionaries. Yet few discovered, created, or braved as much as an Italian math professor named Galileo Galilei. In the lively rhymes of J. Patrick Lewis and beautiful illustrations of Tom Curry, the life and achievements of this pioneer of the sciences are now celebrated like never before.

Poems and images, set in a magnificent pop-up design, take readers back four centuries to watch this true Renaissance man play with pendulums, peer into the heavens, and risk his life to make known the truths of our world. Galileo's courage in challenging the long-held beliefs of his time draws special attention in this book, as do his unconventional methods of research and discovery. Sure to be enjoyed by readers of all ages, Galileo's Universe is a tribute to an icon of curiosity and conviction.

J. Patrick Lewis has been captivating young readers with his bright and lyrical writing style for years. His list of children's books includes Creative Editions' The Stolen Smile, The Last Resort, and Swan Song. His books have earned critical acclaim from such publications as Publishers Weekly and garnered such honors as the Kentucky Bluegrass Award.

Tom Curry has been working as an illustrator since 1977. His award-winning illustrations, which often portray both the humor and despair unique to the human condition, have appeared in five children's books and such prominent periodicals as TIME, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, and The Atlantic Monthly.

3-0 out of 5 stars review of Galileo's Universe
This book is probably most enjoyable for an older elementary school child because it has philosophical issues which require critical thinking. A younger child can still enjoy it on a more limited basis and can "grow into it."

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow - what an amazing book!
You'll be WOWed by this book.

Grandma got this for our three year old daughter who loves stars and stuff. It's probably the most beautiful popup book I've ever seen - complex, intricate popups that illustrate astronomy, physics and Galileo's life - little levers to pull and sliders to move make it fun for her while you'll be amazed by the artwork and mechanics of the popups themselves.

This isn't a book that I think my daughter would read on her own, not for a few years anyway, but she loves being read to, and this one makes for a break from dreary board books into something substantive and magical at the same time.

You'll love this book! ... Read more

Product Description
A new Chief Inspector Wexford mystery from the author who Time magazine has called “the best mystery writer in the English-speaking world.”

When the truffle-hunting dog starts to dig furiously, his master’s first reaction is delight at the size of the clump the dog has unearthed: at the going rate, this one truffle might be worth several hundred pounds. Then the dirt falls away to reveal not a precious mushroom but the bones and tendons of what is clearly a human hand.

In Not in the Flesh, Chief Inspector Wexford tries to piece together events that took place eleven years earlier, a time when someone was secretly interred in a secluded patch of English countryside. Now Wexford and his team will need to interrogate everyone who lives nearby to see if they can turn up a match for the dead man among the eighty-five people in this part of England who have disappeared over the past decade. Then, when a second body is discovered nearby, Wexford experiences a feeling that’s become a rarity for the veteran policeman: surprise.

As Wexford painstakingly moves to resolve these multiple mysteries, long-buried secrets are brought to daylight, and Ruth Rendell once again proves why she has been hailed as our greatest living mystery writer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dear Inspector Wexford
The pleasure in reading Ruth Rendell's Inspector Wexford series is derived only in part -- a small part -- from the crime story contained. Though the plotting of the whodunit aspect of "Not in the Flesh" is as detailed and meticulous as one has come to expect from a Rendell book, it is the novel's non-mysterious elements that are the most absorbing and affecting.

Watching Wexford becoming more and more out of touch with modern ways -- both technological and interpersonal -- we become conscious of our own aging process, and how easily change and progress can eventually leave us all behind. We see Wexford adjusting to and accepting some changes, whilst resisting and stubbornly refusing to acknowledge others. Though alienated from many aspects of 21st century life, Wexford is still a relatively well-adjusted family man, involved in, and concerned with the lives of his wife, daughters, and grandchildren. Unlike his complex and conflicted fictional colleagues, Colin Dexter's Morse, or P.D. James' Adam Dagliesh, Wexford is not a societal outsider, haunted by past tragedies and personal demons. He is a normal, aging citizen, bemused by society's ephemeral trends but with a deep understanding of the fixed human condition and psychology of the criminal mind.

For quite a while now, Rendell's Wexford books have included sub-plots touching on contemporary social issues, and "Not in the Flesh" is no exception. Here, female genital mutilation joins surrogate motherhood(End in Tears); environmental concerns(Road Rage); and race relations(Simisola) as societal issues Rendell has chosen to address. Along with wry observations about feminism, political correctness, and modern life, Rendell can always be counted on to provide a few evocative descriptions of the English countryside, which Anglophile readers on my side of the pond can devour and delight in as exquisite frissons.

Rendell's aim is not to provide massive doses of tension and suspense(though one passage where the police race to prevent a young girl's mutilation is quite a nail-biter), she does eventually engage the reader's attention in the solution of the mystery. Rendell might not gain many new converts from "Not in the Flesh", but long-time Wexford fans will appreciate another opportunity of visiting Kingsmarkham and its always put upon chief inspector.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Good Rendell
This is a very good paperback copy of a recent novel by Ruth Rendell, who is a super writer!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rendell is the best!
Ruth Rendell is unique, the best of all the "noir" writers. I even like her best when she leaves her detective and signs as Barbara Vine, telling an individual story that's not related to the others. She doesn't work crime, she works the mind of the killer. Only compared to Patricia Highsmith. Any reader who likes sicology must read her.

4-0 out of 5 stars Who knew there were truffles in England?
One of the great things about Ruth Rendell is the scope of her interests and therefore, the breadth of her writing."Not in the Flesh" is ample proof of this versatility and creativity.Opening with a truffle hunting mongrel (whose family history has been wonderfully spelled out in the first pages of the book), this Chief Inspector Wexford mystery moves into the investigation of two cold-case murders very quickly.

There is a fine circuitous trail stretching toward the solution, as Wexford and Kingsmarkham police sidekicks do the extensive procedural work that gradually unravels the cases. There are some sidebar stories that not directly connected to the murders, but reflect the author's diversity of interests which she has indulged to interesting effect.

"Not in the Flesh" has drawn some criticism from some regular fans of Rendell/Wexford, and I wonder if it could be because of the general lack of likeability in the book's cast of characters, which is rich and varied, but generally lacking in virtue, kindness and cheer.

In any event, this Rendell tale is definitely worth a read, even if you conclude that it's not her very best work of all time.Anything by the Queen is better than most anything by anyone else.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good read
I enjoyed this one although not as much as others. The female genital mutilation subplot had me thinking-- "Why is this in this story?"no carry over to main plot.I had to think the author had an agenda for anyone reading the book to learn about fgm---And I read mysteries for just that not to be forced to read something an author is involved with in real life.I was though shocked when Wexford in public announced to Burden that the young woman had been gm.Wow, great privacy and keeping a confidence, Wexford and also a little implication to Burden that she was somehow damaged as far as sex goes and therefore not good enough.I don't know, that particular paragragh bothered me. ...
