4-0 out of 5 stars This book is a nice little surprise!
Surprisingly this is a very fun story. I was hesitant to buy this as it is the only story by Frank Darabont, and he's a film director not a writer, but I was glad I did. This was a fun dark comedy story of horror. It's about a writer who makes a deal with a local typewriter salesman to repair his typewriter. What he didn't know was this guy was going to put a demon in his typewriter to help him write. Obviously this doesn't go well. The author gets better, but at a price. This was easy to read, kept the reader entertained with humor throughout and was just a fun little scary story. Plus there are some good illustrations by Bernie Wrightson within the book. I liked this book a lot: recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars amusing satirical modernizing of Faust
Hollywood writer Howard Walpuski dreams of one day becoming a household name, but so far even he recognizes the litter box junk he writes. When his IBM Selectric II suddenly spit smoke and had one last death rattle, he panics because he needs that machine even to hack out crap because five dollars will not buy much.He finds the typewriter repair shop owned by elderly Cyril Pratt who greets his tragic story like an undertaker at a funeral.Pratt agrees that major repairs are in order for a down payment of five dollars after screaming at Walpuski for typing BS as bad as a monkey.

When he gets his typewriter back, Walpuski quickly learns all he has to do is feed it paper and the machine does all the work.Soon Walpuski becomes the instant King of bestsellers, but the typewriter wants blood, sweat and tears from the author and plans to collect once the third tale is written.

This amusing satirical modernizing of Faust is a terrific tongue in cheek tale that will have the audience wondering how horror can be humorous even without Leslie Neilson and when making a pact with the devil. The zany plot never takes itself seriouslyyet the audience will accept that WALPUSKI'S TYPEWRITER has a life of its own needing feed me nourishment.Fans of wacky tales will appreciate Frank Darabont's weird but fun thriller while wondering what type of typewriter he used.

like the companion book to bram stoker's dracula, this book has pictures from the film and its set and costumes designs and the photos of the make-up in process. it also has the screenplay from the film with pictures to go along with the film. this is a perfect book for those who want a book on the film, the making of it, the screenplay and the story behind it and the story of its creator and other stories involving frankenstein.

The Official Screenplay to the Castle Rock Entertainment Film

Frank Darabont's screenplay is a faithful adaptation of Stephen King's story set on the death-row block at Cold Mountain Correctional Facility during the Great Depression. Starring Tom Hanks, the film is narrated by the superintendent of death row who tells the story of a mysterious inmate, a prisoner with the body of a giant and the mind of a child, who is allegedly guilty of murdering two little girls. While awaiting his execution, the mysterious inmate displays odd supernatural powers that cause his fellow inmates and guards to question their beliefs about everything they hold dear.

Included with the full screenplay are selected storyboards, behind-the-scenes photos, and an introduction by Stephen King.Amazon.com Review
Stephen King fans fervently awaited The Green Mile, filmmaker Frank Darabont's second movie adaptation of a King novel (the first being The Shawshank Redemption, another period piece set in prison). The Green Mile: The Screenplay reveals Darabont's deft script style despite nary a character description. The adaptation must be one of the most pure ever written; nearly every character and major scene from the novel is represented in the screenplay, often with verbatim dialogue. Both Darabont and King contribute introductions, illustrating the warm friendship between the two, and detailed film credits, drawings of two storyboarded sequences, and 20 black-and-white photos enrich the script. For those interested in witnessing how a movie changes from screenplay to final product, the shooting script version of The Shawshank Redemption makes for a far more intriguing read--and Darabont's post-production essay on the metamorphosis is fascinating. --Doug Thomas ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If You Write Colloquial Dialog, Learn From GREEN MILE
Few writers are adept at recording colloquial dialogue (ordinary speech for a place), but GREEN MILE screenwriter and director Frank Darabont is not one of those writers. He's good at this. Real good. These examples illustrate my point:

· "Billy the Kid," scourge of the earth, says, "Niggers oughtta have they own 'lectric chair. White men oughtn't havta sit in no nigger 'lectric chair, nossir...

· Eduard Delacroix, Cajun, says, "Yeah, you take 'em, John. Take him til' dis foolishment done -- bien! After, you take him down to Florida? To dat Mouseville?"

· John Coffey, gentle, African American, says, "He kill 'em with they love. They love for each other. You see how it is? That's how it is ever' day. That's how it is all over the worl'."

Every character in Darabont's screenplay is defined through his/her speech, although not as obviously as these three. I suggest writers study his techniques and apply them to their own writing.

Note: Reading this screenplay is like experiencing the movie from the inside out, an adventure, fo' sure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Darabont Triumphs Again.
I am amazed at the genius of Frank Darabont. SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION is the type of film that many directors spend their entire lives trying to make. That film alone is worthy of placing Darabont in the top echelon of modern directors. However, with THE GREEN MILE, Darabont has triumphed again. This screenplay is not as in depth as the SHAWSHANK shooting script. Nevertheless, it is still quite informative and is a useful resource for aspiring filmmakers. Transcribing an already successful published work into a successful movie is extremely difficult and rarely happens. However, Darabont has done it twice. A person can learn a great deal about writing just by reading this book. There's no better way to learn than to learn from a master.

5-0 out of 5 stars All The Wonders of the Film In Print
I bought this book after I saw the movie. The main reason is because this film touched me deeply.Secondly I collect screen plays. This is a true gem!The film's beauty is printed as an unforgettable story.Screen play is based on Novel series by Stephen King.Excellent screen play!!

5-0 out of 5 stars There is an angel somewhere!
I discovered the first episodes of The Green Mile in Biloxi, Mississippi, and the last ones in France. I read them. I was moved by strong emotions, practically to tears, and yet I remained unsatisfied. I reread it when itcame out in one volume, and I had the same sensation of frustration. Thebook, the story had two lines and the unity was not clear, the message wasnot obvious and it seemed to be that there is always a devil somewhere totorture, at times to death, the righteous and the innocent. The two timelines were not really reinforcing each other. The bad nurse of the oldpeople's home was not a real continuation of Percy, and Percy did not haveand could not have, does not have and cannot have a continuation. Evil inman is repetitive, but in no way continuing, developing, getting any kindof amplification with time.I have just been listening to a tape about thepsychiatric hospitals of the old days (up to the mid 70s in France), andthe doctors, the nurses, and even the patients, those who dedicated theirwhole life to get rid of that institution, compared these asylums toconcentration camps and demonstrated how the inmates were reduced toanimals, and yet resisting, how the rations (during World War II) wherestarvation rations meant to slowly kill the inmates by starving them.Doctor Lucien Bonnafé, MD, cannot be in any way stopped in his explanationof this alienation, of this reduction of men to vegetables, especially withthe chemical straight jacket. Hitler did not invent concentration camps, and he did not invent eugenics, the cleansing of society of their misfits. He just systematised, industrialised it. But, But,BUT, I finally got tothe screenplay of The Green Mile by Frank Darabont. He got that second timeline out. He recentered the whole story on Paul, the only one Paul thatcrosses time. And then the light came out so strong that I was not movedany more, but literally blinded into ever stronger and never beforeexperienced emotions, into unquenchable tears, tears that were a salvation,a redemption, an epiphany that would not ever satisfy and quench my thirstfor optimistic humanism. This human world contains angels that cantransform evil into good, and it is John Coffey, a black man. He has donethat for a very long time, till the one day he gets trapped by his naiveteand simplemindedness, because angels are naive, simpleminded and maybeslightly retarded, since then cannot conceive evil. When one does only goodthings and can only bring good news to the world, he is totally isolated, rejected, and thus he becomes the prey of all evil beings who will abusehim and trampled him down. And yet he is not completely trapped, because hecomes to the point when he wants to go, to leave this world, where he canonly love and be loved by fireflies. So he is happy when he gets trapped, relieved of this enormous responsibility of making the world better, ofkilling or repairing evil. Even if it means Death Row. But, before leaving,he gives his good nature to some other beings, even if he cannot give themhis powers. Here it is a mouse, Mr Jingles, and a man, Paul. And his gifttakes the form of a very long life. The very long life of telling thetruth, the truth of God, the truth that killing is ugly, no matter whetherit is criminal or judicial. Only life is beautiful, and the story of lifehas to be told forever and ever, to push death away, even if it is DeathRow. This life story has to be told over and over again, just like a mousewill play with a spool forever. And thus, Darabont gets us to a universallesson, to a unique and eternal metaphor. The writer, the storyteller isforever the one who will bring life to earth, real life, the life ofjustice, of beauty, of emotions, of truth, of entertainment, of happiness. The storyteller is God himself, or at least his angel, because he nourishesour souls with the desire to know a better world. When are we ever going tohave the film, the video, so that we can be moved to frantic tears by theimages that will demultiply the screenplay into a real piece of humanparadise, in our dreams, in our night, in our daydream, in our sunshine ofhope ?

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Green Mile": Blueprint for a Perfect Film
With "The Green Mile: The Screenplay", writer-director Frank Darabont provides would-be screenwriters with an unprecedented look at how a perfect screen adaptation is written. Stephen King, author of the novelon which the film is based, has called Darabont's screenplay"hands-down, the best film adaptation I've ever read." Tom Hanks, the film's star, said of the screenplay, "It's that rarest thing, thatthing you're always looking for, this piece of work that shows up on yourdesk, ready to shoot, and you look at it and say, 'Wow! We just have toshow up and make this thing!'"In most situations, directors cometo actors hat in hand, begging actors to work on a film. With "TheGreen Mile", Darabont had actors lining up to work in the film. Evenactors of the stature of Gary Sinise were willing to take virtual cameos toappear in the film. The book contains Darabont's final shootingscript, which even in that form, contains minor differences from thefinished film. It also features introductions by Stephen King and Darabont,as well as a selection of stills and storyboards which give readers addedinsight into the production of what is easily this year's best film. Although lacking the in-depth analysis of changes in the screenplay whichwere present in Darabont's last book, "The Shawshank Redemption: TheShooting Script", this book is well worth reading, and, incopanionship with the forthcoming "The Making of 'The GreenMile'", will give readers a guided tour of the production of a modernfilm classic. ... Excerpt: The Mist (also known as Stephen King's The Mist), is a 2007 American horror film based on the 1980 novella of the same name by Stephen King. The film is written and directed by Frank Darabont who had previously adapted Stephen King's works The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. Darabont had been interested in adapting The Mist for the big screen since the 1980s. The film features an ensemble cast including Thomas Jane, Nathan Gamble, Marcia Gay Harden, Laurie Holden, Toby Jones, Andre Braugher, Frances Sternhagen, and Sam Witwer. Darabont began filming The Mist in Shreveport, Louisiana in February 2007. The director revised the ending of the film to be darker than the novella's ending, a change to which Stephen King was amicable. Unique creature designs were also sought to differ from creatures in past films. The Mist was commercially released in the United States and Canada on November 21, 2007. The Mist performed well at the box office and received generally positive reviews. Although a monster movie, the central theme is what ordinary people will be driven to do under extraordinary circumstances. The plot revolves around members of the small town of Bridgton, Maine who conceal themselves in a local supermarket when a violent thunderstorm cuts off the power. While they struggle to survive an unnatural mist which envelops the town and conceals vicious, supernatural monsters, extreme tensions rise amongst the survivors. The morning after a violent thunderstorm, commercial artist David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and his wife Stephanie (Kelly Collins Lintz) witness an unusual mist moving towards their lakeside hom...http://booksllc.net/?id=8432450 ... 5-0 out of 5 stars new favorite
This is a must read for any Hellboy fan, and Fiction fans alike. The stories are short but all are superb.

4-0 out of 5 stars Super Reader
A reasonable selection of tales. The weaker ones are probably the earlier, more ghost story types. Because basically, the Right Hand of Doom cannot wail on ghosts, and Hellboy is there to see if he can find out what is going on, mostly.

The best stories are the crossover, by Charles de Lint, with his Newford milieu. A veteran Newford cop has been ordered to set up a paranormal task force. He, of course, thinks this is a punishment. It pretty much appears the guy has been walking around oblivious.

Then Hellboy comes to town, to assist in an investigation. A big, fishy eye-opener for the new paranormal task force.

There are other monsters, including a relative, crazed Romanians, etc, and even a Lobster Johnston snippet, and a psychic regression story, starring Abe Sapien.

Certainly worth it for fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blazin'!
Hellboy: Odder Jobs is a great collection, by a batch of writers trying their hand at Mike Mignola's big red guy and his "family" of oddities, misfits and world-savin' weirdies. Christopher Golden has chosen some terrific stories for inclusion. This volume is a must-read for anyone who call him- or herself a Hellboy fan.
Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars NOT a Graphic Novel!
Despite what the product title says, Odder Jobs, is NOT a graphic novel. This was quite misleading, especially when one considers that "Odd Jobs" was another collection of random hellboy stories by various authoirs and artists and actually WAS a graphic novel.

I had expected this to be a sequil because of amazon's poor product labelling.

That rant aside, it IS a good read, with several fun stories in it. I would reccomend it if you are a HB fan, but NOT if you;re shopping for quick and easy graphic novels to read on your lunch break.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great read
Odder Jobs is, like the other Hellboy collections of short stories, an extremley absorbing read. I loved this collection. The stories are varied in their use of myth and legends which i one of the things that drew me to the Hellboy series in the first place.

The only down to this book is that the first story, "Brotherhood of the Gun," is the best story in the book. It should've been the last story in the book. After reading it the following stories seem dull by comparison, even though they are very good stories by themselves. I highly recomend this book for Hellboy fans, or fans of science fiction. ... Product Description
The first book in the Newmarket Shooting Script Series reissued with new material to coincide with the Warner Bros. theatrical re-release and special 10th anniversary DVD launch of this modern classic.

This expanded edition draws from the many new extras that are being created for the DVD, including 90 minutes of commentary by Darabont, documentary material on the making of the film, and a tribute parody of the film.

Nominated for 7 Academy Awards®, including Best Picture and Best Screenplay, The Shawshank Redemption, starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, is an extraordinary tale of hope and survival inside a maximum security prison. Based on a Stephen King novella, Frank Darabont's screenplay follows the complex twenty-year relationship between two convicts who have little in common—except friendship.

Darabont personally wrote and/or assembled all of the content in The Shawshank Redemption: The Shooting Script, as follows:

  • Introductions by King and Darabont on the movie's genesis
  • The shooting script in its original form ("the one I wrote, the one Castle Rock decided to make, the one my cast and crew dealt with every day")
  • Detailed analysis of script-to-screen changes (26 pages) showing why and how scenes were cut, and how some scenes were handled technically
  • Two storyboard sequences, with commentary
  • Stills section (35 photos)
  • Afterword by Darabont about his experience in Hollywood ("It took me nine years of saving, struggling, and honing my craft before I started making my living as a writer.")
  • 35 b/w photos, plus storyboards

4-0 out of 5 stars Shawshank Shooting Script-KC review
Wonderful! Very insightful and informative. A great addition to anyone's bookshelf. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study guide of Shawshank Redemption
This is an excellent book to aid in the understanding of Shawshank Redemption, whether studying english or mass media.
I found the book to contain additional details on story boards and amended scenes, which indicate the way the script writer, Frank Darabont, adapted the story to film.
Thoroughly enjoyed the script, especially as I can read it in places I can't view the film, i.e. work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great in depth exploration
As a rule, don't buy shooting scripts if you want to write a screenplay.Shooting scripts are finished products.

That said, screenwriters can learn from this exploration of the classic movie (yes, folks, it is a classic, it's been shown a billion times on TNT), by reading the deleted scenes (my personal favorite is one about the publicity of Warden Norton's prison-to-work scheme, in which Heywood, played in the movie by William Sadler, gets his best and sharpest lines for someone who's supposed to be the dunce of the movie), the storyboards, the explanations of which scenes were kept, etc.

And for people who just love the movie, it's a must-own.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great buy for any film student or "Shawshank..." lover
As Frank Darabont says in the introduction of the book, who else would buy the screenplay unless they really want to know more about the film? Sticking to that idea, Darabont has given the film student/buff, and those who simply love the movie, a real treat with this book. Not only does it contain the screenplay, it's the screenplay (I emphasize) AS IT WAS WRITTEN BEFORE FILMING. He's published it exactly as he wrote it when he adapted it from King's novella. I point this out because, as Darabont himself points out in the intro, so many screenplays that are thrown out by merchandise wizards are nothing but the finished movie transcribed. And really, what good is that to someone who wants a deeper knowledge of the film?
Not only does he give us the original screenplay, he gives us a scene-by-scene comparison of the screenplay vs. the finished film, and why things got changed/added/left out. This, in particular, says a lot about Darabont to me. This is a man who wants to use his work not only to be what it is (a GREAT film), but to educate as well. This book inspires. He includes storyboards, as well (including a storyboard for a deleted scene- oh, goody, goody!) and introductions by both himself and Stephen King, and a summarizing bit of advice to budding filmmakers and screenwriters. I devoured this book in short time (one night), lol, and found myself going back to the film to compare and analyze- if you don't do the same after reading it, I'll eat my foot.. okay, maybe not. But something drastic, I warrant you. If you are at all inclined to learn about filmmaking, writing, or even if you just love "The Shawshank Redemption" (which is what lead me to the book in the first place), this is a real must-have. It's worth the price alone just to read what he had to say about filming Freeman's scene walking through the field after discovering Andy's message. Trust me. By the way, fellow "Shawshank..." lovers are welcome to ...discuss it. Enjoy this book, everyone. It's a real find. And I'm SO glad I chose to buy it. The ONLY reason I give it four stars as opposed to five is because, personally, I would have liked to have seen more storyboards. ... Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 American drama film written and directed by Frank Darabont, based on the Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption. The film stars Tim Robbins as Andrew "Andy" Dufresne and Morgan Freeman as Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding. The film portrays Andy spending nearly two decades in Shawshank State Prison, a fictional penitentiary in Maine and his friendship with Red, a fellow inmate. Despite a lukewarm box office reception that was barely enough to cover its budget, the film received favorable reviews from critics and has since enjoyed a remarkable life on cable television, VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray. This revival is reflected in its high placement on various lists of great movies, and on the Internet Movie Database it contends with The Godfather for first place. ... Read more

Product Description

From the publishers of A Lovecraft Retrospective: Artists Inspired by H.P. Lovecraft.

Drawing on 35 years of Stephen King in print, Centipede Press's second art book, Knowing Darkness: Artists Inspired by Stephen King, measures 11 x 15 inches.  It has 448 pages and over 500 illustrations, including 30 double-page foldouts. From Carrie to Just After Sunset, this definitive collection of art spans King's entire career, with newly commissioned artwork and reprinted art, most from publications long out-of-print that command premium prices.

Scrupulously reproduced with fidelity, shot from the artists' original art or color-corrected computer scans, the art appears the way the artist had intended—a private gallery, as it were, showcasing the works of the most talented artists in the fantasy, science fiction, and horror fields.

The book is printed on heavy matte paper, varnished for protection, and sports sewn signatures for repeated readings. The book is protected by a custom-fitted, illustrated slipcase.

Representing every artistic medium—collages, scratchboard, oils, acrylics, watercolors, graphite pencil, photographs, and digital art—the art reproduced includes virtually all of the work published in King's impossible-to-find, out-of-print limited editions, trade book covers (hardback and paperback), and movie posters.

Drawing on artists worldwide, this book includes work by Dave McKean, Bernie Wrightson, David Palladini, John Jude Palencar, Michael Whelan, Bob Eggleton, John Cayea, Rowena Morrill, Jill Bauman, Kinuko Y. Craft, Jason Eckhard, Les Edwards, David Ho, Allen Koszowski, Zach McCain, Alex McVey, John Picacio, Don Punchatz, Rick Berry, Douglas Smith, Thomas Canty, Glenn Chadbourne, David Christensen, Alan Clark, Ned Dameron, Linda Fennimore, Stephen Gervais, Mark Geyer, Phil Hale, Don Maitz, Steven Stroud, Drew Struzan, and Mark Ryden. As a special visual treat, some of the artists were asked to draw new pieces, based on their favorite King stories or novels, which will never appear anywhere else.

The text for the book—the in-depth profiles, the interviews, the essays—is by George Beahm, whose definitive books about King include a companion book, a biography, a price guide, a travel guide, and collections of essays. Beahm, who has published 30 books on various subjects, has also written extensively about artists and has worked with numerous artists for decades.

SIGNED EDITION: Comprised of two books, both laid in a matching traycase, this collectible is limited to only 300 copies worldwide. The art book has been signed by over thirty artists. A supplementary book of 20 prints (13x19 inches in full color) is also included.

Note: The book is not signed by Mr. Stephen King, nor does it have any text by him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Knowing Greatness
This is simply one of the most amazing books to be produced about Stephen King's world ever! The publisher has exceeded my expectations about what this book would be. There is page after page of stunning reproductions of artwork contained within the covers. It is nice to be able to view the images without the lettering (King's name and book title) super-imposed over them. Not only do you get to see the images as the artist made them, but you also learn what inspired them and about the artists themselves. Some share tidbits of what it was like to create something for the Master Stephen King. Although the price is steep for this volume, it is well worth having something like this in your collection. The only downside is the slipcase is not of the best quality, mine cracked along one bottom corner, be forewarned and use precaution when sliding the book out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb item
Beautiful, heavy book. Worth all the Dollars I payed for it (and with Amazon much cheaper than elsewhere!). Highyl recommended item for everyone who loves Stephen King.

5-0 out of 5 stars A monumental work
When I say that KNOWING DARKNESS is monumental, I mean that in every sense of the word.

First, it's big. And thick. And heavy. If you live in Maine and need to add some weight to your rear wheels to make it through the snow, toss a couple of these babies in the trunk.

Secondly, an epic amount of effort went into creating this book. The sheer magnitude of artwork assembled between these oversized covers is awe inspiring. I can't imagine the diligence it took to ferret these pieces out, or the quantity of supplications that must have been required to pry them out of the hands of publishers and collectors long enough to photograph, or the Herculean task of cataloging and sorting and laying them out into such a beautifully designed volume. One must be more than "committed" create a book like this. One must be obsessed.

But mainly, the book is truly a monument to the twisted imagination of Stephen King and the images it has conjured up in the minds of the talented artists represented herein.

Section one, "Early Art: 1974-1984," opens with a collection of artwork ranging from the pedestrian (some of the early book covers where the art, while technically fine, fails utterly to suggest the depth of weirdness within) to the ludicrous (advertising art for a Literary Guild newsletter that makes THE SHINING look like a Nancy Drew mystery) to the sublime (John Cayea's Boschian jacket art for THE STAND). It then presents portfolios by Don Brautigam, Stephen Gervais, J. K. Potter, Ned Dameron, Thomas Canty and Phil Hale, each portfolio accompanied by brief essays by George Beahm.

Section two, "Middle Art: 1985-1995," begins with an overview of book art and ably-written text, but on page 201 something remarkable happens: we encounter the work of Bernie Wrightson and a personal interview conducted by George Beahm and fantasy artist Tim Kirk. At this point I quit skimming the articles and slowed down to read every word...whenever, that is, I wasn't staring glassy-eyed at Wrightson's compelling imagery.

Section two continues to compel with artwork by Michael Whelan, Don Maitz, Dave McKean and Rick Berry. The astounding thing here is the sheer range of expression from artist to artist, all inspired by the same writer. Funny how the same words can conjure such varied images in the human mind, and how lucky we are that some of those humans possess the skill to share their inner imaginings with those of us who can only gaze in wonder and admiration.

The last section, "Current Art: 1996-present," features the work of John Jude Palencar, Peter Staminirov, Drew Struzan, Steve Stone, Darrel Anderson and Les Edwards. Article-wise, the standout offering is the Struzan piece. Struzan's work is iconic, gracing movie posters from the 1970s until his recent retirement, including posters for BLADE RUNNER, the STAR WARS and INDIANA JONES series and, presented here, THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, THE GREEN MILE and THE MIST. While not as horrific as the other work here displayed, the accompanying article reminds us of what we recently lost as movie posters moved from the tactile medium of paint to bits and bytes rendered on computer screens. Like the legendary gunmen of the west, Struzan's retirement coincides with the end of a rich, textured era, the likes of which we will not see again.

In this way, too, KNOWING DARKNESS is monumental, commemorating what is likely to be the passing of a glorious era of hand-rendered art. Our consolation is that this particular body of work is so grandly and lovingly assembled to enjoy for decades, and even generations, to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best King-related book ever!!
What can I say. I've been reading Stephen King since 1975, have a collection of some 250 plus books, but never have I been as impressed by a King-related book as I am with Knowing Darkness. The quality of the reproductions is amazing; the all-round quality of the book (paper, binding, etc.) is the best I've ever seen.
Any King-fan will be proud to add this publication to his or her collection!

Highly recommended, without any hesitation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome career-spanning collection
First off, in full disclosure, I am friends with the author and some of the artists in this book. I've also written five books about Stephen King's work and am working on a sixth, the second volume of my LOST WORK OF STEPHEN KING to be published by the Overlook Connection Press.) With that out of the way, let me say that even if I had no connection to the work and world of Stephen King other than reading him, I would be absolutely blown away by this stupendous volume.

As author George Beahm knows, I have never been a big fan of collecting art or of the efforts to illustrate works of literature. I just never responded to it in a way that would have transformed it into a passion.

Yet now, after sitting with KNOWING DARKNESS and flipping through every page, I can easily see the impact art can have when it is created to accompany a story, or a novel. This book is an enormous treasure trove of almost everything "visual" related to King's work, from book covers and line drawings, to massive full-color multi-page foldouts. The book is organized chronologically, which helps keep us grounded as to where in King's career the art appeared, but other than that, the "timeline" approach wasn't really necessary, since each art work is superb and there was no "evolution" of artistic interpretation of King's work over the decades. From CARRIE on, artists have responded brilliantly to King's stories, and it was an amazing experience seeing some of the characters and scenes I've known so well over the years.

Physically, the book is HUGE.It takes up the right quarter of my coffee table. The quality of the reproductions is breathtaking, and the accompanying essays provide historical, literary, and King-related insights into the works that are represented.

KNOWING DARKNESS is an expensive book, but for collectors, it's worth it. I've been trying to think of other authors whose body of work has lent itself to the type of artistic interpretation presented in this book. I could only think of a couple, although there may be more: JRR Tolkien and HP Lovecraft. With this volume, Stephen King is certainly in good company. All involved should be pleased and proud. The creation and publication of KNOWING DARKNESS is a milestone event in the fields of both art and literature.
