4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasing Bette bio filled with facts
A lexicon of Bette Davis.Unique in its style, but thoroughly enjoyable. What's great about it is the fact that you can pick and choose which topics you'd like to read about, and skip over those that don't spark yourinterest. For example, it lists every street address and city in whichBette lived, and in what years.Unknown facts like those make this bookexciting to read. And being from Boston, born and raised, anything onBette Davis (especially since I can actually visit her homes in Lowell& Newton) is worth reading. In response to one of the previouscustomer reviews on this book, yes it's true that this author does bash andcriticize nearly all of Bette's films.I heartily disagreed with some ofhis reviews, but just remember, everyone's entilted to his or her ownopinion. What they say is not gospel.A great concise conpendium of factsperfect for the Bette Davis fan.

3-0 out of 5 stars All you ever wanted to know about Bette
Randall Riese takes a different approach to the life of this legend than other authors have done in the past. The result is a virtual encylopedia ofBette's life and career. This book is a good reference tool for thebegining davis fan. You can look up her films, her co-stars, directors, almost anything. The book is filled with info nuggets and photos thathaven't been published before.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hatchet Job by unsympathetic author
This book is good as a factual guide about la Davis' life. But the author sneers and blasts nearly all of Davis' movies, merely repeating what other uninformed hacks have critiqued. He misquotes all over the place. Insteadof Davis saying in the movie "Beyond the Forest" the line:"If I don't get out of here, I'll die!", the author has hersaying "I've got to get out of here!" His contempt for hissubject makes him a very unlikely candidate to asess this great artistwhose movies today hold up better than nearly any other star of the 30s and40s. While he completely destroys Davis' films like "Beyond theForest" and "In This Our Life," both films have generatedtremendous re-evaluations for being the masterpieces they are. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Divine Within
I would not call this text based upon credible research; but rather, more of a series of accumulated opinions. Thus, I do not recommend this text as a nonfiction one. It seeems to feed or fuel the myth that Bette Davis felt any sort of rivalry with Joan Crawford. Scholar Ed Sikov, biographer of the 2007 acclaimed text "Dark Victory: The Life of Bette Davis," is the latest credible researcher who dispells the myth of Miss Davis being involved in a reciprocal professional rivalrous relationship with Joan Crawford.

Ms. Crawford has been shown to be engaged in a type of pathological jealousy, not just with Bette Davis but, with numerous women and even girls. The author of this text fails to address the abundance of data on that topic. This omission in his research leaves a gapping hole in the text where facts belong.

If a reader wants to engage in a more gossipy kind of fiction, this text might fill their desire for fanning old mythical fires about a Davis & Crawford mutual rivalry. However, for the more intellectual reader, one who has done their homework with scholarly collected data on Miss Davis & Ms. Crawford, this text will be at best disappointing. At worst, it comes off as something out of exploitative British tabloids.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Well Done
THis book examines the so-called fued between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. It follows the girls lives from childhood, to their acting careers, and to their battles with their grown children. It is extremely thorough Mr. Considine interviews numerous actors, families, and the loversof both Davis and Crawford. If you are a Joan Crawford or Bette Davis fan, this is the book to get ... 46. Star Acting: Gish, Garbo, Davis

4-0 out of 5 stars diva times three
affron's text is insightful; the frame enlargements are helpful and supportive of the text.

the most interesting aspect of this book could be its only failing.by choosing to study gish's silent work, davis and bridging the two with garbo, who acted in both silent and sound film, there is not a clear reason why affron selected these three. nor is there a clear connection between the three.not to mention, davis' filmography was the most accessible, as well as the most diverse (yes, that can be argued but how many of gish's films actually survive to disprove what i'm saying?) and davis could warrant a book all her own.

so, if it is of interest, read closely and draw your own conclusion. i will be doing it again very soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for students of acting and iconoclasm
Written before the age of video and DVD, where images can be frozen or the real time of movement altered, this book features over 750 frame enlargements from the films in which Lillian Gish, Greta Garbo and BetteDavis appeared. These enlargements dissect the craft of each star's actingstyle, by reproducing moments, often close-ups, in a frame by frame study, and also documents the evolution and refinement of technique. The chapterson Gish are less interesting to me (a matter of personal taste), but theones on Garbo and Davis are priceless. The films Garbo made werenotoriously inferior to what she brought to them. Nowhere is this moreevident than in her silent period, though Affron gives us images from filmslost or unavailable to us. An example is A Woman of Affairs and thesequence where she embraces a bouquet of flowers from her lover. Affron'simages convey the series of expressions that range from relief, panic atthe thought of losing the bouquet again, and hysteria. The enlargementscapture the transitions, and the "organic and spontaneous nature ofher epiphany". The text which accompanies the frames is oftenhyperbolic and unnecessary. Garbo's sound era is best represented andfinalised by the enlargements from Camille, since Affron does not coverConquest, Ninotchka or Two-Faced Woman.Affron's chapters on Davis coverher apprenticeship with Warner Bros, highlights the three films she madewith William Wyler - Jezebel, The Letter and The Little Foxes - asexercises in control and focus, and culminates in her triumph in All AboutEve.There is an argument that reducing film performance, particulary onesfrom a talkie, is diminishing the accomplishment of the performer. Whilethis book could be used as an alternative to the films the frames are takenfrom, I prefer to use it as a supplement to the films, and an opportunityto appreciate the beauty and talent of these extraordinary actors ... I could just about pass out with excitement! Here are two paper dolls of THE Miss Bette Davis, along with costumes from several of her films, including The Bride Came C.O.D. and The Man Who Came to Dinner!

This is a reproduction of a set of dolls from the 1940's. If you are a fan of Bette Davis, you are probably already considering purchasing two of these sets -- one to keep in pristine condition and another to use for possible craft and decorative projects. The possibilities are endless!

If I had my wish, this beautiful book from Paper Studio Press would also include costumes from Now Voyager! Otherwise, this is complete perfection and I'm thrilled to have it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick, enjoyable reading and gives you a real sense of her personality..
The thing I found most enjoyable was reading Bette Davis speaking - a strong and vibrant personality comes through and it is both enjoyable and interesting to read.

Also, in it she reveals some information such as names of affairs which she says that she didn't reveal in her own biography The Lonely Life. She discusses her thoughts on co-stars and loves and family, it's fascinating.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bette In Her Own Words...
I happened upon this book quite by accident. While impatiently waiting for one of my libraries to have 'The Girl Who Walked Home Alone' (the new Bette Davis Bio) available, I found this book, and figured, what the heck, maybe this would hold me over till I could get the new one. Well, it was much better than I expected! It was Bette telling her own stories in her own words, to her good friend and author Whitney Stine.

Mr. Stine became a fan of Ms. Davis's when he was 8, and kept a scrapbook of the star all throughout her career. Well, in 1968, and in his thirties, he finally got the chance to meet her after she heard he was writing a Biography of her career, not her life (Mother Goddam - 1974). She was intrigued, and once the two met, they remained very close friends for almost 20 years.

What I enjoyed most about this book was it was conversations that Bette had had with Mr. Stine over their 20 year friendship. Bette herself explaining her favorite movies, people she did and didn't like working with, tidbits about her personal life, awards she'd won, and missed opportunities. It wasn't some author who never knew her personally making up things they thought had happened, or filling in blanks themselves.

Overall I was very pleased with this book...and am very glad I found it. Now that I've had my Bette Davis fill, I can be a little more patient while waiting for her new bio to become available! ... Read more

Lightly Used Hardcover published by G.P. Putnam's Sons, N.Y., 1987, 207 pages in Very Good Condition. Text is very clean (looks like it was never read) and unmarked with no rips, tears, creases, loose or bent pages. Text is tight, Spine is firm, binding stil tight. Filled with fabulous anecdotes as well strong opinions about a wide range of subjects by the legendary actress. As great a actress as Davis was, she was just as outspoken. Some of the people Davis talks about in this book is former President & fellow actor, Ronald Reagan, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Humphrey Bogert, and co-star of "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane" Joan Crawford and others. 5-0 out of 5 stars "Wonderful Biography"
By the time Bette Davis wrote her second autobiography entitled "This'N That" in 1987 she had gone through many trials and tribulations; she had a mastectomy, several strokes, and the most devastating is when he daughter, BD Hyman, wrote a tell-all novel called "My Mother's Keeper", written along the same lines as "Mommie Dearest". That book painted a very distorted picture of Bette as an alcoholic thatpossessed a temper that she vented on those nearest to her. In retaliation perhaps, Bette wrote "This'N That". The last several pages contain letters from people who knew Bette Davis, and in these letetrs they write flattering reviews of Miss Davis. There is also a letter written to BD from her mother and how Bette believed her daughter wrote her book for financial gain. Whatever the purpose for its publication, "This'N That" is a fun read. Bette details her work on the "Hollywood Canteen, her trials with Joan Crawford on "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?", and her battles with her health later in life. He wit, determination, and uncanny sense of humor are all evident. Another great part is when Bette writes about working with Faye Dunaway and how she felt Dunaway was the most unprofessional actress she had ever encountered. Bette dedicates the book to her companion and secretary Kath.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bette Davis; she was The Sun, The Moon and The Stars.
(This review written by me was originally published on Amazon.com on July 13, 2009, but due to some unknown error it no longer shows up because that particular book listing is no longer available. Anyway this is my review on Miss Davis's riveting (2nd.) autobiography as appeared on July 13, 2009.)

If you love Bette, you can't afford to miss out on this touchingly powerful (2nd.) autobiography of Bette Davis. Written in the final years of her life Ms. Davis touches on many avenues of her life, personal and private. Many of the beginning chapters talk about her mastectomy and her life devastating stoke that followed 9 days after her mastectomy. (If you or a loved one have suffered a stroke buy this book it will be a great inspiration to you.) Also, Bette talks some about her daughter's scathing autobiography "My Mothers Keeper" by B. D. Hymann. I don't know if any of you saw the "Phil Donahue Show: Bette Davis" back in late 1987, but she was brilliant talking about her book and how she hoped it would be an inspiration to mastectomy and stoke victims. She also tales many funny, sad and heartwarming stories of her career and home life in this book. I highly recommend this book, and that episode of the "Phil Donahue Show", if you can find it. You will not find that interview with Mr. Donahue in any of Bette's filmographies, but will see a brief clip in the "Stardust: The Bette Davis Story" TCM documentary. I fortunately found someone who recorded the interview when it aired on TV, and that's how I purchased a complete version of the "Donahue: Bette Davis" interview. If your interested in purchasing the full "Donahue Show" interview with Bette check on [...], and search Davis on Donahue in Movies & Television. However I must warn you, I am not responsible for any orders you make from that person on [...], that is just where I ordered my copy, I am simply referring you to a source of entertainment that you will find interesting if you like this book. ... Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Ruth Elizabeth "Bette" Davis (April 5, 1908 ? October 6, 1989) was an American actress of film, television and theatre. Noted for her willingness to play unsympathetic characters, she was highly regarded for her performances in a range of film genres; from contemporary crime melodramas to historical and period films and occasional comedies, though her greatest successes were her roles in romantic dramas. After appearing in Broadway plays, Davis moved to Hollywood in 1930, but her early films for Universal Studios were unsuccessful. She joined Warner Bros. in 1932 and established her career with several critically acclaimed performances. In 1937, she attempted to free herself from her contract and although she lost a well-publicized legal case, it marked the beginning of the most successful period of her career. Until the late 1940s, she was one of American cinema's most celebrated leading ladies, known for her forceful and intense style ... Read more

Product Description
With the ruefulness implicit in her title, but also with honesty and a bitchy bonhomie that seldom adorn such Sunset sagas, Bette Davis pictures herself as Mother Goddam, a tamable shrew who never found her Petruchio. Her four marriages suffered inevitably from income-patibility. In 1946, Bette Davis earned more ($328,000) than any other woman in the U.S.; one ex-husband, clearing out with the pretty nursemaid, even sued for alimony. Says she: "The only future marriage I would even remotely consider would be with Paul Getty." But she admits that her own rapturous intensity simply "exhausted" most of her mates. "Many men." she protests, "find their fathers in women. I am the least likely father symbol extant." ... Read more
