Product Description
In this #1 New York Times bestseller, Ellen DeGeneres shares her hilarious take on everything from our most baffling human foibles–including how we behave in elevators, airplanes, and restrooms, and why we’re so scared of the boogeyman–to fashion trends, celebrity, and her secret recipe for Ellen’s Real Frenchy French Toast. Most of all, this witty, engaging book offers insights into the mind of one of America’s most beloved comics.…

Dear Reader,
I was awfully excited when I was asked to write a book. I was however, nervous. I was afraid I didn’t have anything important to say. But when I began writing, I realized that although I don’t know a lot about any one thing, I know a little about a whole bunch of things: baking a pie; dancing; curing the common cold; running the Iditarod–it’s all in the book. And I realized I notice things that maybe some people don’t notice (or they don’t notice that they don’t notice). That’s all in the book, too.

3-0 out of 5 stars disappointing, puzzling, and sparsely funny as all get out
I liked this book and laughed at least 18 or 19 times -- really good chuckles -- whenI was reading it. I just couldn't help but bust out laughing, Ellen has a completely original brain and is quite a kidder.I had picked the book up in the store and looked at one page, all about how important flossing is, and thought "Wow!This is not worth any money at all, I'll have to check this out of the library!"

So, ten years later, I did.Every time I turned a page, I expected to come across that section on flossing.Guess what.No luck!Did Ellen write another book only for libraries, without the flossing section?I wasn't all that disappointed since, after all, I had read it before. Just puzzled. Where did those pages go?Maybe I'm just not a very careful reader: your call.

I learned a lot about Ellen from the book, even though she was just kidding around. For one thing, don't even think about playing against her in tetherball.Be on the SAME team not the OPPOSITE one.

I was pretty skeptical about her account of racing in the Iditarod, too.It was funny enough, but if she is really telepathic with animals I would have expected to hear a little bit more of the thoughts of her dogs, what they were thinking about the race.So I think there is a good possibility she exaggerated there, especially with the part about the cats pulling the dogsled.I forget if she mentioned what she said to the cats, but if you say "Mush" to dogs, it would have to be something different for the cats.

I was pretty impressed with Ellen's vocabulary too, and finally learned what "Ipso Facto" means -- I had to go look it up in the dictionary.Kudos to you, Ellen, for helping me increase my vocab!Actually I haven't looked it up yet, but I plan to as soon as I finish this review.

I did have one minor quibble, though, about the spelling.I had always thought the word for some little thing of indeterminate name was spelled "thingie", but Ellen spells it "thingee", which to me sounds more like an idiom of the subcontinent.Well, actually, since it isn't really an official word, I guess it could go either way.If I ever meet Ellen, this is what I will ask her about. But I will NOT challenge her to a tetherball game.If you want to find out about flossing, though, this book is not the right thingie for you.

One thing I'm sure Ellen and I would agree on.This book was one chapter too long. You can skip the last chapter, and not miss much.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ellen is much funnier in person
I didn't find this book very funny at all. I think Ellen Degeneres is so funny largely because of her delivery and just reading her words on a page just didn't cut it. I LOVE Ellen but I didn't love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars My point is .. its the funniest book I've ever read!
This is one the greatest, funniest and hilarious book I've ever read!
I gotta admit, i cant go through a page without laughing so hard!!
This is a great book for a gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Laugh-out-loud Funny!
I decided I'd sleep better if I stopped reading murder mysteries before going to bed, so I picked up this book and went to sleep laughing. I didn't sleep any better, but I was happier. She mostly writes about, well, nothing, but it doesn't matter. It's silly and fun. One chapter is on a serious topic, but you can't help laughing out loud. It's a chapter on her experience with a ruptured ovarian cyst (chapter title: the time ellen degeneres had an emergency, starts on page 119). Here's an excerpt.

"The first thing I had to do, besides proving that I had insurance, was tell them what my symptoms were. Unfortunately, they recognized me as a comic, so they thought I was trying to be funny, that I was trying out a new part of my act.

I said, "I have this sharp intense pain in my lower abdomen. I started feeling it about two hours ago . . . . "

And the admitting nurse would interrupt me, barely able to control her giggling, "Yeah, yeah . . . Then what happened? Wait! Mary, Stan, come over here, she's really funny. Start from the beginning."

"I was hurting so much I couldn't move," I continued.

"The admitting nurse started laughing hysterially. "Oh yes. That's great, it's hilarious. Ooooo, I've got an idea. Tell the rest of it like you're on the phone with God. That would make it really funny"

"So after I made it past the admitting nurse, they had me sit on these extremely uncomfortable plastic chairs (they were rejected by Greyhound bus stations for being too painful) in the waiting area again until they could find someone to help me. Everybody else there was watching TV. They finally wheeled me in to see a doctor because my crying and screaming in pain was ruining people's TV-viewing experience. "Keep it down, we're trying to watch Jerry Springer!"

2-0 out of 5 stars C-
In an ironic twist, the title is sadly misleading. In a group of essays that seem to exist mostly as filler, Degeneres, who is usually so funny in her stand-up routines, absolutely misses the target on her first humor collection. There isn't a single essay that is good all the way through. There is a running gag about club soda that is amusing, and a chapter on human behavior is likewise entertaining. Degeneres rambles on in a way that is irritating, and many of her observations are strangely dull. Much of what the author has to say is a few beats off from funny, and the chapters containing lists are staggeringly dry and achingly boring. Reading through this was like reading a slightly silly textbook. Eyes passed over words, and while comprehending them, did not find them interesting. What a major disappointment from a talent who has proven herself to be a remarkable addition to the field of comedy, but who must have lost some of her humor in the translation from stage to the written word. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable and hilarious!
I have been a longtime fan of Ellen, and her book is no disappointment. It provides an insight to her life and her sense of humor is wonderful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ellen is so funny
Ellen is so funny and witty; I enjoy taking this book with me to just whip it open without feeling if I'm disturbed I can't get back to where I left off. It's snippets of many things that just make you laugh out loud.

3-0 out of 5 stars A few good laughs
I think Ellen Degeneres is a funny lady to listen, normally. However, I actually think I would have enjoyed reading this book more than actually hearing her read it aloud. It was just something about the jokes that were involved. Although this was the case, I still enjoyed hearing the book because there were some pretty funny parts. Not all of the book is laugh out loud funny, but overall enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Between the Covers: http://bookreview-blog.blogspot.com
I sat debating if not the greatest question ever asked, then certainly one what would cause the entire world to scratch its head.Do audio books count as books in respect to book reviews? Then I thought to myself, "Hey, this is my blog. I do what I want." And with a sense of teenage rebellion, I stormed off and slammed my door behind me to write this review of Ellen DeGeneres's audio book that I bought on iTunes.

I love this audio book. Each chapter is like a mini-stand-up routine that kept me laughing out loud the entire time.I had my headphones in during a car ride and my entire family was getting upset with my giggling.I think they were just jealous that they were not in on the joke. And since this audio book was read by the author, it's like Ellen became my best friend and she just loves to tell me stories."The Brunch Bunch" is a great opener when regulars Paula Abdul, Diane Sawyer, Gloria Steinem, Donatella Versace, Ed Begley Jr., and Eminem come over to Ellen's for Sunday brunch, but some have to go to the kid's table when Diane shows up with Siegfried or Roy, Ed brings Tara Lipinski, and Paula brings her drycleaner. One chapter has Ellen convincing you "why prison wouldn't be so bad" while another gives tips on getting out of embarrassing situations (such as accidentally flicking off John Travolta). In this book Ellen meets God, talks to a butterfly about the meaning of life, and even tells you how to save money by turning old fruit into blush and lip gloss (beware of bees). She is simply hilarious.

Each chapter is simply a gem.And having Ellen talk directly to you is simply one of the best experiences. She is seriously one of the funniest people, and as it turns out, not a bad writer at all.Her insights are unique and there is a natural flow to her ideas that seems like a normal conversation of the most random topics possible.

I recommend this book and audio book to everyone.Unless you are the type of person who hates having a good time, cringes at the sound of laughter, and loathes anything to do with creating positive energy, then do not read this book.If you are a fun-loving human, go get this book or even better: the audio book.

"The reading of all good books is like conversation with the finest men of the past centuries."

Very dissappointed, I ordered the comic - it shows a brown cover but I received the comic with the blue cover which I also ordered as I thought they were 2 different comics.
There was also another one I ordered which made the listing sound as if it were another different comic.
Now I have 3 blue covered Female Force: Ellen DeGeneres and it cost me about $65 AUD to purchase and get delivered to Australia.
Guess I'm feeling a bit disapointed and ripped off.
Other than that is was a good purchase but I really only wanted one copy!

Product Description
"Mom, I'm gay."With three little words, gay children can change their parents' lives forever.Yet at the same times it's a chance for those parents to realize nothing, really, has changed at all; same kid, same life, same bond of enduring love.

Twenty years ago, during a walk on a Mississippi beach, Ellen DeGeneres spoke those simple, powerful words to her mother. That emotional moment eventually brought mother and daughter closer than ever, but not without a struggle.Coming from a republican family with conservative values, Betty needed time and education to understand her daughter's homosexuality -- but her ultimate acceptance would set the stage for a far more public coming out, one that would change history.

In Love, Ellen, Betty DeGeneres tells her story; the complicated path to acceptance and the deepening of her friendship with her daughter; the media's scrutiny of their family life; the painful and often inspiring stories she's heard on the road as the first non-gay spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaigns National Coming Out Project.

With a mother's love, clear minded common sense, and hard won wisdom, Betty DeGeneres offers up her own very personal memoir to help parents understand their gay children, and to help sons and daughters who have been rejected by their families feel less alone.Amazon.com Review
More than 20 years have passed since Ellen DeGeneres came outto her mother on a beach in Mississippi. Stunned, Betty DeGenerescould only think of her own disappointed expectations. As she put herarms around her daughter, she was struck by the realization that shewould never see Ellen's picture on the engagements page of theTimes-Picayune, her local paper. That Ellen would eventuallyappear on the front page of the Picayune and countlessnewspapers and magazines around the world is an irony not lost on hermother: "If I had known she was going to grow up to be EllenDeGeneres," Betty quips, "I would have taken more pictures."

Now the spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign's National ComingOut Project, Betty DeGeneres travels the country explaining how shecame to terms with her daughter's sexuality, and how love andacceptance can transform a family. Love, Ellen is an extensionof her warm and much-admired public speaking, providing insight intoher own life as well as Ellen's and arguing for further education, compassion, and the passage of antidiscrimination laws. --ReginaMarler ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Love, Ellen
I love the Ellen show and always see her mom on the show and some of the wonderful things that Ellen has done for her mom so was very interested in how Ellen came out to her family and learned alot about her family.Greatly written book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Betty gives a touching look at the most likeable celebrity
Betty's book is wonderful. I recommend it for people who are coming out, parents of gay children, friends of gay people, people who have been out, people who aren't gay or don't have gay friends of kids, everyone!
I first read Love, Ellen years ago in seventh grade. I was doing a biography on Ellen DeGeneres for my English class and needed a book for the assignment. I chose Love, Ellen because I didn't want Ellen's story from someone who would give untruthful information. Who better to tell your story than your mother? As I read this book I found myself laughing at Ellen's humor throughout her childhood and crying at the stories of young gay people whom Betty met while campaigning for equal rights. This is an amazing story that gives a lasting emotional touch. Buy this book, read it over and over agin!

3-0 out of 5 stars Sweet story...
It was interesting, nice to know the journey that Ellen and her Mum went through. Story was a bit slow in some parts but over all I'd recommend it as something to read, definitely not a waste of time or money!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for All Family Members of Queer Individuals
I cannot stress how much this book has changed my life.

When I first came out of the closet, it was obvious that while my mother was trying to accept this, she was having a hard time of it. After reading only the introduction to this book, I raced to her room and asked her to read it.

My mother is an incredibly busy woman, and I have given her many books to read over the years. This is the very first time she ever finished one I brought to her attention, and it had a profound impact on our relationship.

Betty DeGeneres gives family members a story they can relate to, a new way of looking at it, and resources for them to check out... But it is by no means a dry account. It is deeply personal and deeply touching, and I can never thank Ms. Betty enough for writing it.

Product Description

All Ellen DeGeneres wanted to be was funny. She kept her humor clean and steered clear of politics and social agendas, instead honing a quirky, off-center, mistrustful view of the world.

I was coming home from kindergarten--well, they told me it was kindergarten. I found out later I had been working in a factory for ten years. It's good for a kid to know how to make gloves.

If ever there was a more unlikely comic to become a symbol of controversy, it was Ellen DeGeneres. Throughout her career, she balanced her ever-growing success with her desire to keep her sexuality private. How that struggle affected her life and career and ultimately inspired her to come out of the closet, putting her life in the spotlight and her career at considerable risk, forms the emotional core of this biography. And in a broader sense, the controversy caused by Ellen's acknowledged sexuality is a reflection of America's own struggle with tolerance and acceptance.

Ellen examines the repercussions still being felt by the comic as a direct result of her revelations and offers a glimpse of what her future may hold. It details:

Ellen's colorful family history, which includes a swashbuckling pirate ancestor

How her conservative father turned his back on Ellen when he learned she was gay

The personal tragedy that became her greatest inspiration

Her secret life in the gay bar scene during her stand-up days

The women Ellen has loved

Her life as a gay crusader ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Real Ellen Story
Brilliant description of Ellen's life so far. Detailed yet dignified and truthful. A brilliant read!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A lot of good info, but it reads like a newspaper
I'm giving this book 4 stars, because I'm a huge fan of Ellen, and as far as I can tell, this is the only biography available. If there were a few more biographies available, I'd probably only give it two stars.

This book reads like a newspaper written by a mediocre journalist.Or a compilation of a bunch of articles from Us or People. It's really annoying to read because of that style.

But, it does contain a lot of good information. It answered most of my questions that I had about Ellen. It doesn't have any direct interviews with Ellen, but I don't think that Ellen is going to say any more about her past than she has.In one book, Ellen says, "I can't remember anything about my childhood."And, I think that's probably true. That's probably why she makes a bunch of jokes about everything, because she's got a horrible memory.

And, this book is mostly about the TV sitcom, Ellen.Probably about 75% of it is about the sitcom, and the biography ends after the end of the show. So, since she's got a talk show, this book is really dated. And, three of the chapters are dedicated to various co-stars of the TV sitcom, so this book really isn't a 100% Ellen book.

So, if you're a huge Ellen fan like me, you will probably want to dredge through this book. For everyone else, I'd recommend passing on it and waiting for Ellen's next biography to come out in a few years.

1-0 out of 5 stars CHEAP REHASH OF MAGAZINES, NEWS ARTICLES AND VIDEOS
I bought this book expecting a carefully researched, full biography on Ellen. Instead it was basically a rehash of magazine articles, videos, and news stories about Ellen and her Coming-Out. The author did not even interview Ellen, so we don't get a true, direct-source picture of Ellen's life. Instead, we have old information taken from other sources and condensed into this book. It doesn't sound like the author interviewed Ellen's closest friends and associates, either; I got the impression that a lot of the information was third- or fourth-hand, not directly from the sources. This book is crassly commercial and written at the time that public interest in Ellen was at its peak. It reads like a fan magazine and its sole purpose was to make money, not to provide an insightful biography of Ellen DeGeneres. I would only recommend it to those who no longer have access to the magazines and videos about Ellen's show and her coming-out.

3-0 out of 5 stars wanting more..
I am an admirer of Ellen and applaud the difficult decision she had to make in order to live her life her way. This book, which was a fast read, left me wanting more.

Who is Ellen. What are her likes and dislikes. The book was a chronograph of her professional life and while she is"still a work in progress" it would have been nice to know alittle more about who she really is as seen through the eyes of friends andfamily.

3-0 out of 5 stars WHYNOT READ A MAGAZINE?
AS AN ABSOLUTE ADMIRER OF ELLEN AND DESIRING TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE REAL LIFE OF ELLEN DEGENERES, I WAS VERY DISAPOINTED TO READ A BOOK THAT HAD NO IMPUT FROM ELLEN DIRECTLY. THIS BOOK WAS TOO INVOLVED WITH THE TRIALS ANDTRIBULATIONS OF THE GOINGS ON OF HER SHOW, THAN THE PERSONAL EVENTS INELLEN'S LIFE.OVERALL THE BOOK WAS WELL WRITTEN, BUT VERY UNEVENTFUL. ... Product Description
In her first book, Love, Ellen: A Mother/DaughterJourney, Betty DeGeneres revealed the struggles of her own life andthose of her famous daughter, TV and film actor Ellen DeGeneres. Whilemost people knew the all-too-public saga of Ellen's professional andprivate coming-out odyssey, many did not know the hardship andtriumphs that Betty went through trying to be the best possible mom toher daughter during what turned out to be one of the most historicevents in gay and lesbian history. The lessons learned from thatjourney sent Betty into a whole new chapter of her own life. AfterEllen came out, Betty became the official spokeswoman for the HumanRights Campaign (the first nongay person to assume thisposition). Today she continues traveling the country far and wide inthat role, talking to gay men and lesbians and their families andfriends about the fear, rejection, abandonment, love, and acceptancethey've experienced. At the end of Love, Ellen: A Mother/DaughterJourney, Betty invited readers to send letters and communicationsto her with questions and stories about their own battles as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or straight human beings caught up inthe fight for equal rights. The response was overwhelming. Itfrightened her. What could she possibly bring to all these moving, heroic, tragic, funny tales? After the initial shock subsided, Bettyrealized the answer: She could give of herself. After all, that's whatshe'd been doing for years. For Ellen, for Anne Heche, for her sonVance, for the thousands of people she'd met on the road. To all ofthem she's simply offered what she knows best: her own supportive, kind, nurturing, strong life experiences and ever-evolvingunderstanding as Just a Mom.Amazon.com Review
To her surprise, Betty DeGeneres, once a quiet housewife and mother, has become a gentle, consistent, and rational voice in the gay liberation movement. In Just a Mom, she speaks for all the ordinary Americans whose children have turned out "different" and whose first concern is that they will suffer pain and rejection in life. It is natural, DeGeneres points out, to harbor some disappointment or anger at a gay child, and she guides parents toward appropriate resources and organizations, like the Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG). With warmth and conviction, DeGeneres expands on her memoir Love, Ellen to address some of the questions she has been asked as a spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, such as "Did I make my child gay?" and "How can I protect my child?" She makes some practical suggestions on how to handle homophobia and threats at school, and how to help build self-esteem in a child whose peers may ridicule him. And she argues on the enormous personal and societal benefits of coming out of the closet. But this is not so much a practical guide to keeping a child safe or combating hatred as a simple, homey, and reassuring recitation of what we all know--or should know: good parenting means unconditional love and support. --Regina Marler ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A good book for parents dealing with gay children.
Easy to read. Not too long. Good for parents who are struggling with a gay child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching
This is a very heart warming, comforting book to gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transexuals or even to those who find themselves different among the majority in society. The book discussed about Mama Betty and Ellen's experiences and journey together on her coming out and how it made their relationship stronger. This book is greatly recommended to everyone to see the bigger picture of this issue about human sexuality. Hopefully, it opens the minds and hearts of those who will read it.. like the way Mama Betty opened her mind and heart about her daughter, Ellen. Love is what's most important after all.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book filled with excellent advice
"Just a Mom" was a tremendous help to me when I was struggling to overcome my ignorance about my daughter's homosexuality.I highly recommend it to anyone who has a gay loved one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Definitely More Than "Just A Mom"
For any gay child, reading more from Betty DeGeneres confirms that we want to adopt her as our own Mom.More personal disclosure than her first effort. The unfortunate breakup between Ellen and Anne makes the timing of this release a bit awkward though. For any parent who is struggling to deal with their child's sexual orientation, this is a must-read book. ...
